Notes for the Week of February 11

For the next 5-6 weeks, I am going to write a post on Sunday night to relate any interesting news for the following week. Please share with friends!

This week's free story is "Swim", a true horror story from Pandora's Children: The Complete Nightmares Book 1. It can be found at here and will be free from Monday, 2/11/13-2/15/13.
For my submission to Publisher's Weekly, I had to write a 150 word "promo" to explain to them what makes Blood, Smoke and Ashes different from other books. Why they should consider it for review. Not easy for me to do, but I did it. And it forced me to think of what made my first novel different and special. And this is what i came up with: Blood,Smoke and Ashes combines the fast-paced nature of a traditional thriller with a complex human element found in traditional horror stories. It is a supernatural thriller/horror, a hybrid tale that blends genres and appeals to readers of both thrillers and dark fiction. It never gets bogged down with too much history but enough back story is presented to allow the reader to truly understand the characters and their motives. It is a character driven story, and while it is a supernatural tale, at its heart it is a story about the human spirit and the human condition: what drives us, what breaks us, what defines us. As FBI agent Jack Shaw discovers at the end of the book, not every monster is created equal, good and evil is not as black and white as he has always believed and not everything that is broken can be put back together.

Thanks to everyone who has been giving me feedback and finding small errors in Blood, Smoke and Ashes. Thankfully, there has nothing too egregious, some small spelling errors, an omitted word here and there, and missing periods at the end of paragraphs. Right now, I am putting together the trade paperback version. Formatting is done, just waiting for the last round of edits to get finished before I send off for an evaluation copy.

Other than that, starting to plot out my proposed next book, tentatively entitled The Hum. But that may change.

Anyway, to all of you who have bought the book and read it, thanks. And don't forget to "Like" the book's page and leave a review if you enjoyed it. If not... remember what your mother said: "If you have nothing nice to say, don;t say it at all."

The gallery was pretty much empty when Molly was led into the tiny room. A single journalist, a man in his sixties named Arnie Plank, was present, but there were no cameras of any sort around. Representatives from the Sheriff’s Department, including the Sheriff of Carson County himself, occupied half dozen chairs out of the thirty in the galley. The mayor of Las Vegas and the governor of Nevada, nervous looks of anticipation on both of their faces, stood against the back wall, looking toward the execution booth and the chair within. The warden of the prison and several guards paced anxiously next to the door to the booth and the large switch set in the wall several feet away which would start the electrocution process.

It was a monumental day to be sure, the execution of a female serial killer at the hands of a new execution device, but the governor did not want a circus so he had limited access to the event.
Though all of the wives of the murdered men had been invited, only one woman had chosen to bear witness to Molly Blackburn’s final moments. Only Victoria Forrest, the forty-five–year-old wife of Martin Forrest, a foreman overseeing the construction of the Stardust Hotel, had accepted the invitation to watch her husband’s murderer get executed. She sat in the front of the two rows, in the center, so she could get a perfect view. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail and her blouse was open a button or two at the neck, revealing a teardrop diamond suspended from a supple gold chain.

Father Calhoun stood in the back of the room, apart from the governor and mayor. He hadn’t planned on staying to witness the execution when he arrived at the prison earlier in the day, but after his short conversation with Molly, he had developed an irrational need to see her die. It wasn't out of any sense of vengeance, but a sense of concern. He knew it was ridiculous, but her last words echoed in his head, accompanied by that terrifying laugh. We’re only done when I say we’re done, Father. It was insane of course; the twenty–five-year-old woman was about to be executed by the state. They were done. This was the end of Molly Blackburn.

But Father Calhoun, though not a superstitious man, needed to see the body before he would feel comfortable again.

Molly was still dressed in her gray jumpsuit when two guards strapped her down to the simple wood and metal chair set up behind the window separating the viewing area and the execution booth. Once she was restrained, an act she did not struggle against, they strategically placed electrodes on her body, one on the bald patch of her head, one on her right calf, creating a path through which the alternating currents would be passed to stop the heart and destroy her organs.

Once she was secured, the leather straps tightened, the electrodes tested, everything else checked twice, the men left the room. The warden stepped in, stood several feet from the condemned.

“Molly Blackburn,” he said, “you have been found guilty by a jury of your peers of murdering eleven people over the course of six weeks earlier this year, including your own husband, Maxwell Blackburn. In minutes, the great state of Nevada will execute you for your crimes. Have you any last words before your punishment is carried out?”

There was a moment of tense silence before Molly finally spoke.

“I make no apologies for my actions,” she said quietly from the chair she was strapped to. Her neck was bent, her head angled toward the ground. Her black hair was a curtain in front of her face. But her soft, menacing voice still carried clearly through the bars of the booth into the gallery beyond. “I'm only sorry I didn't get to kill more.”

There was an uncomfortable stirring in the gallery at these words as people shifted nervously where they sat or stood. There was something decidedly unsettling about being in the presence of a bona fide monster.

Molly lifted her head. She slowly looked around the room, her dark eyes peeking out from between strands of dirty black hair. Her penetrating gaze took in everyone in her field of view, finally settled on Father Calhoun despite the shadows that cloaked him. She offered the priest a cruel little smile. “I would do it all over again,” she said.

“I will do it all over again.”

Coffin Hop 2012

I will admit, I don't get into the Coffin Hop, or any hops, as much as I would like to. A forty hour work week, two crazy kids, a wife with her own hectic schedule, a dog that seems intent on creating as much chaos as possible, multiple ongoing writing projects... they all conspire to keep me from getting as involved with blog hops as I should be. And with the Wii U being released in a short three weeks, my on-line presence will even more diminished.

Anyway, excuses aside, a brief note about me for anyone who is visiting here for the first time. My name is Brad Convissar and I am a dentist by trade. And if anyone knows horror, it's a dentist. The look of terror on a patient's face as I, clad in mask and special glasses, lean in with needle that looks like it is ten feet long, aiming for their mouth, is simply unique. And there is nothing more enjoyable in my profession than yanking out a nice, infected tooth. Other writers may talk about blood, may try to describe it, but my hands are covered with it every day. I know blood. I live blood. And I know what true horror looks like.

I would love to be able to write full time, but I can't complain about my job. I enjoy what I do.

Last year I simply gave away some eBooks. All I asked was the people told me their most embarrassing Halloween costume. This year I am going to give away some physical books. I, like many people, still love the feeling of holding a real book in my hands. Do I read eBooks? Sure I do. I read a lot of Indie authors I'm always reading at least one Indie/small press book at a time on my Droid X. Would I prefer a physical book? Yeah, but and let's be honest: a $2.99 eBook is much more appealing than a $14.95 soft cover. Anyway, this year I am going to be giving away 2 signed copies of Reflecting on Midnight, my novella collection (collects the novellas Dogs of War, King of the Merge, FotoShop of the Gods, I Never, and two short stories The Butcher and Drop House). I am also going to give out 2 signed copies of my first full length novel, a supernatural thriller called Blood, Smoke and Ashes. Unfortunately, this will not be available until February, but I will keep e-mail addresses so I can contact winners when they are done. (Note: the eBook version will be finished beginning of January, and I will gift the winner copies of this in addition to the signed books).

It's Been a While

Well, as the title says, it's been a while. So many other things going on. And as they say, every minute spent on writing blog posts is a minute not working on actual writing. But with my first full-length novel at the editor's, being beaten up by a professional, I find myself with a little free time. Yes, I could be working hardcore on the novella I am finishing up, "The Fountain", or start working on the next book, The Hum, but I am enjoying a couple of days without any writing responsibilities.

Once Blood, Smoke and Ashes returns from the editor for a final go through, I am going to be spending a lot of late nights polishing that up, so there will be little time available for these mundane but necessary tasks, like: setting up advertising dates for February and March (done), putting together a new Darkest Days Publishing site (done, at www.darkestdayspublishing.com), writing up an intro page, an acknowledgment page, an end note (working on it), putting together a new biography (done), putting together the basic eBook document (need to start), putting together the basic print version document (need to start, not looking forward to that) and updating this blog site (still doing). And those are just the tasks I can think of off the top of my head.

At least I can now cross 'writing my first blog post in over half a year' off the list. It isn't exciting, but it is done.

Anyway, I'm going to put something up for the Coffinhop in the next day or two. As soon as I figure out what I am doing.

The Short Story- Novella-Novel Quagmire

As any of my fans know, I have yet to write a novel. I am in the middle of one right now, but I have yet to publish one. I have spent the past three years working on shorts works, and to this day have published 26 or so short stories and 4 novellas.

Now, I did this for one main reason: exposure. In the time I spent working on these shorter works, I could have written two or two and a half books. But then I would have had 2 or 3 works published instead of the 16 or so collections and novellas I have available. Was it the right choice? Who knows.

What's wrong with short stories?

After looking at various reviews of my free short stories, "Blink" and "Last Dance of a Black Widow" one of the most common complaints I found is... "I expected more" or "I was hoping for more" or "This would have made a good book but it was too short." Or something similar. People simply wanted more. They enjoyed the story but needed to have more of it. The killer is, these people then give me three out of five stars, not because they didn't enjoy what they read, but because they felt cheated. Now, readers can't feel cheated monetarily because these stories are free, though I guess they can feel cheated time-wise because they spent ten minutes reading something that they thought never really ended... but that's a different issue altogether.

Reflecting on Midnight covers- need your opinion part 2

Now I still want opinions on the title design from the previous post, but now I am going to ask for opinions when it comes to the author name itself. Michael pointed out that my name in the 2 previous examples looked a little unbalanced because of the two capitals on the left and only one on the right. And I do agree, to a degree, and I did notice it. I just liked the design. It's a little different. But anyway, I adjusted the name and now want opinions on it. Do you like the original style from the previous post, despite it being unbalanced? I personally don't care for the balanced look, which you will find on the cover below on the left. I like the straight across look on the right better than the look on the left. But there's still something I liked about the unbalanced look... Opinions welcome...

The only difference is in the title. I know the top looks really empty, but I really didn't want to block out the eyes and the nose in the clouds. Here is the working cover for the final novella which will be included in my Reflections on Midnight collection at the end of the year, along with Digs of War, King of the Merge and FotoShop of the Gods". More gangster/fantasy with a horror element. Really defies all attempts to shove it into a single genre.

To read Dean Koontz or not to read Dean Koontz, that is the question

Ahhh, the tease that is Dean Koontz. A new book comes out every year, and after serious consideration about whether or not I think I will enjoy it based on the description, I almost always buy it. It may take years, but I always get it. But why the hesitation?

Because of huge, relatively recent disappointments. Like The Good Guy and the Husband and My Heart Belongs to You. And Relentless. I wish I could scrub that book from my memory. They all started with such promise. And they all fizzled. Bad. Some worse than others. One in particular crash and burned.

Now, I know that he, like King, will never reach his pinnacle again. I doubt we will see such masterpieces as Midnight and Whispers and Phantoms again. I don't know if it is a lack of interest in writing such epic stories, or his simple enjoyment in writing shorter works. Whatever the reason, it doesn't mean that Koontz can not still write fun, engaging books. And that is why I comes always come back. Because for every crappy The Good Guy, there is a fun romp like Life Expectancy. For every dull The Husband, there is a truly frightful The Taking.

Do Free Books on Amazon Help?

It's amazing what selling a book for free on Amazon can do. Not for your career, mind you, but for that free book alone. Sadly, at least for an Indie author at the beginning of his career, free book sales do NOT automatically convert to paid-for book sales. Don't get me wrong. I didn't expect it to. And I understand why it happens. So I am not disappointed. Let's look at why:

Last Dance of a Black Widow, a 3,000 word short story went on sale yesterday for free. Within 24 hours, it became:

#1 free short story
#2 free horror
#49 in free Kindle (All)

Pretty good, right? Well, it will stay up there for a day or two and then slowly slip down the ranks (as unknown books by unknown authors do), replaced by the good-old standbys by established authors and the classics. I passed Dracula and Amanda Hocking, but they'll slip by me again soon.

First things first, what do I want to say about Halloween. We'll start with the picture below and go from there. By the way, I'm the one on the left, the dead guy, not the one with the boobs. That was... let's see... 16 years ago, back when I was a Freshman in college. Back when I was young and thin. Ahh, those were the days.

Are my covers professional? No. Do I have fun making them? Yes. Yes I do. And I like that all of my covers have a similar theme and setup: one of five black and gray backgrounds, a picture, and the title and my name in the same place and same font. Because of the similarities, if you see one, you'll instantly recognize the others

New Novella- King of the Merge

My newest endeavor, the 18,000 word King of the Merge, a horror/thriller/ghost story, was published earlier this week.
