As the Teluk Batik-Teluk Rubiah area now officially is off limits, I am looking for other areas to have a jungle walk. Years ago I walked up Ungku Busu Hill or locally called Bukit Ungku Busu. Last Saturday it was a nice day and a good moment to do it again (I think after 6 or 7 YEARS!). Anyway, arriving at the top, I felt I should come back to sort out if there was a possibility to continue. That happened today... and here is the report:

Wherever I am going at the moment in Sitiawan and Seri Manjung, everywhere there are housing building projects going on. I rapid tempo the once small towns are being transformed into a new city. It makes sense, the influx of 5500 expected people who will work at the Vale Iron Ore, need to live somewhere. Most foreign visitors see no more of Lumut than the busstation and the jetty. It's understandable though not completely right, Lumut does have some things to offer, see my Lumut page but few realize there's some good places to stay here too. During my first visit to this part of Malaysia, I stayed 2 weeks in the Galaxy Inn, and not on Pangkor. So, where can you stay... have a look...

Visiting Perak usually doesn't include a visit to the mangrove swamps around Taiping in Kuala Sepetang and Matang. It's a little hard to reach and there's not a place to stay either. But if you take private transport, it's an excellent day out to learn about the mangrove forest and how it is used by local industry.

You need a whole day, no discussion here. Canoeing around Pangkor means starting at about 7AM and finish around 5PM. It's good fun, but you need to bring water and food. It's therefore not recommended to do this without proper backup of a motorboat. But hey, you'll be on the water and have a lot of fun!

Taiping is a very nice little city in Perak. In my humble opinion, the city doesn't get the attention it deserves. Not only has Taiping quite an interesting history, still visible in the architecture but there's a lot more, think about the best zoo in Malaysia, Bukit Larut or the swamps of Matang, the bird sanctuary and more. No visitor in northern Perak should skip Taiping because he or she "has no time".
