LB Beason Lines Up On the Outside as Camp Starts

LB Jon Beason was on the outside LB spot when camp opened for the Panthers, which Dan Connor was on the inside:

When Panthers training camp opened this week, Jon Beason was not in the middle of the defense — Dan Connor was. Beason has moved to the weakside linebacker spot to take the place of Thomas Davis, who tore his ACL for the second time in six months during the offseason. It seems pretty obvious Jon Beason would prefer to remain at middle linebacker, but said he’ll move to the weakside if it makes the team better. Beason swatted down a couple of passes during early drills, perhaps a telling sign that he’s capable of being a good outside linebacker. “Whatever”s going to help the team win,” Beason said. “Thomas was obviously a big part of our defense, and if moving me is going to make us better, that”s what I want to do.

Panthers Place WR Smith, RB Stewart And 4 Others On PUP List

Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart and wide receiver Steve Smith will begin training camp on the active/PUP list. Smith’s fractured arm is the more long-term injury, but he’s not believed to be in any danger of missing Opening Day. Multiple reports have said Stewart is 100 percent so the Panthers may be just exercising extreme caution. Right tackle Jeff Otah, defensive tackle Louis Leonard, line backer Thomas Davis and guard Duke Robinson are the four others.

WR Dwayne Jarrett Could Miss Making the Team with a Bad Camp

Steve Reed of the Gaston Gazette reports that, although wideout Dwayne Jarrett is current penciled in as a starter on the Panthers roster, he could “easily be released” before the start of the season unless he starts producing. Now entering his fourth season in Carolina, Jarrett has appeared in only 29 games and caught 33 passes for one touchdown. The Panthers need someone to step up and take the pressure off of Steve Smith and thus far that person has not been Dwayne Jarrett.

A two-time All-American, Jarrett was USC’s all-time receptions leader with 216 and the Pacific 10 Conference’s all-time leader in touchdown receptions with 41. In 2007 he was MVP of the Rose Bowl and his height, hands, and quickness led many observers to project him as a star in the NFL. Unfortunately, he has been a huge disappointment in Carolina and fans should see someone else playing opposite Steve Smith this year unless Jarrett vastly improves.

Panthers Run a Workout for Former Univ of Miami FL Dave Howell

National Football Post says that the Panthers worked out former Univ of Miami DL Dave Howell:

The Carolina Panthers are set to audition former University of Miami defensive lineman Dave Howell on Monday, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation. The National Football Post has been told that the Panthers are going to conduct a major tryout. The Panthers could use definitely some defensive linemen to upgrade their depth. Howell is a fairly obscure, unaccomplished former Hurricanes player who lined up on both sides of the football. He enrolled at Miami as a highly regarded recruit, ranked as the 29th defensive lineman by SuperPrep.

Clausen’s Chances of Pushing Moore Suffer with Holdout

Sporting News Reports how Panthers QB Jimmy Clausen will lose some valuable chances to get on the field with a holdout that appears on its way for the former Notre Dame QB:

With camp opening Wednesday, the Panthers have one big piece of unfinished business—signing Jimmy Clausen, their top pick in the 2010 draft. Talks are stalled with the former Notre Dame quarterback, the Charlotte Observer reports.

If he doesn’t sign on time, Clausen’s chance of making a push for starting QB will suffer. He already must unseat Matt Moore, No. 1 on the depth chart after Jake Delhomme’s departure. It likely won’t be easy for Clausen to pass Moore, who finished last season with significant starting time.

As a second-round pick—the Panthers didn’t have a first-round selection—Clausen won’t come close to getting a big-money deal. He’s likely to get the going rate, which is a four-year deal with incentives. It appears Clausen wants the max, with terms that pay him like a starter once he assumes the role.

23. Panthers (8-8) – PRE-CAMP OUTLOOK: The Panthers can run the ball all day long with the duo of DeAngelo Williams and Johnathan Stewart. But that may be all they can do well. Steve Smith is still stranded on “Double-Coverage Island” and Julius Peppers is counting his dead Presidents in Chicago. While I love teams that like to run the rock, Carolina seems a few playmakers shy of contending.

RB Williams Not Worried About a Contract Extension

Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams says he’s not concerned about the fact he’s entering the final year of his deal. Williams is set to make $2.1 million this season, which is low for a guy who has run for 2,632 yards and 25 touchdowns in his past 29 starts and earned Pro Bowl honors last year. But he knows his payday will come at some point.

“My whole thing is I signed a five-year contract here and if the owner doesn’t want to re-sign me or do a new deal, that’s all him,” Williams said. “I’m not going to get upset or anything like that because I knew when I signed my five-year deal that I was committed here for five years, so why put up a fuss

Beason a Player to Watch as Training Camp Kicks Off

Yahoo! Sports reports that one player to keep your eye on as camp gets ready to open for the Panthers is LB Jon Beason:

Linebacker Jon Beason: Beason has been to two Pro Bowls but could wind up moving to weak side linebacker with Thomas Davis out for the season. Or, the Panthers may decide that Beason is too valuable to move from the inside linebacker spot. Tough call for the Panthers because the weak side linebacker spot is one of the most important in the Tampa 2 defense.

No Open QB Competition for Panthers Entering 2010

Steve Reed of the Gaston Gazette reports that contrary to perceptions around the league, there is no open quarterback competition in Carolina. Barring injury or “a mental breakdown of Jake Delhomme proportions”, Matt Moore will open the season as the starter.

The more relevant question is who will be Moore’s primary backup and defacto starter if Moore gets injured. Hunter Cantwell, an undrafted free agent who was on the scout team last year, has impressed coaches and appears to be No. 2 on the depth chart at present. Reed believes, however, that Jimmy Clausen will emerge to take that spot by opening day.
