General Superintendent Resignation

In May 2002 the General Conference elected Pastor H. Paul Foster to serve as General Superintendent of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Newfoundland and Labrador with subsequent re-elections in 2006, and 2010. The most recent election was to be completed July 31, 2014 however in December 2011 Pastor Foster tendered his resignation as General Superintedent effective July 21, 2012. In his letter to the PAONL's pastors and churches Foster commented:

"For the past thirty-nine years it has been a privilege to minister within our Fellowship and truly a privilege for the last ten years to serve with dedicated executive brethren and a team of fellow pastors. We have faced challenges and victories together and yet there are many more before us as we await the return of Christ. When re-elected in 2010, I had every intention of serving until 2014, Lord willing. However, in my heart I feel it is time to relinquish this position. This letter is to advise you of my intention to resign as General Superintendent, effective July 31, 2012. This decision doesn’t come lightly but through prayer, counsel of family, and peace that has come to me, I feel it is time to move on. Margaret and I sincerely thank you for your love, support and understanding during our tenure."

Please pray for this time of transition as we seek God’s guidance in the choice of a new General Superintendent. Correspondence will be forthcoming to all PAONL credential holders and churches in preparing for General Conference 2012.

Discipleship Conference on The Holy Spirit Propels Us Forward!

The biennial Discipleship Conference was a significant moment for the PAONL as in this centennial year the role of the Holy Spirit in Discipleship was revisited. Joining the Conference was Dr. Gary Nelson (Tyndale), Rev. Murray Cornelius (PAOC), and Tim and Rochelle Enloe (AG). Presentations were timely and the presence of the Spirit was evidenced in worship times, prayer response, healings, and Spirit baptisms. Response to the conference has been overwhelmingly positive and the aftermath from the weekend continues to be felt!

Discipleship Commission Survey Released!

A province-wide and church-wide survey has been released at the Disciplehsip Conference in order to ascertain the next steps in fulfilling the vision of the Commission on Discipleship. This tool is an essential component in our Discipleship strategy and thus the PAONL is looking for FULL participation.

Survey documents can be found at http://www.paonl.ca/documents/index

Please note the following instructions and communicate the essential pieces to your congregation before you administer the survey:

The survey is anonymous. Please do not put your name on the response form.

Please complete all the questions by circling the appropriate number, which reflects your opinion or answer. Please do not “over-think” your response but answer with your initial impressions.

There are no “right” or “wrong” answers. We want to know what you truly feel and think.

The survey is meant to provide you with a voice on the status of the Pentecostal movement within Newfoundland and Labrador.

All surveys are to be distributed and collected in the same service. The survey is intended for your congregation’s largest gathering, for instance, a Sunday AM setting either distributed pre-service or immediately following the service. Our recommended age is 14+.

We would suggest you administer the survey as soon as possible (possibly October 30) but do require that the surveys be returned to the PAONL head office not later that November 30.

Please consider using the survey as a part of that Sunday morning gathering to emphasize discipleship and that as a part of this fellowship we are passionate about fulfilling the Great Commission in our communities.

Thank you for your support and participation!

SCHOOLS OF HOPE opportunities for ESL AND COMPUTER TEACHERS

Do you have a Teaching Certificate and wonder how you can use it for God? Have you recently retired and wonder what you can do next?

SCHOOLS OF HOPE has opportunities for ESL AND COMPUTER TEACHERS

Schools of Hope is an outreach ministry in Honduras that serves within the Public School system in the capital city of Tegucigalpa. Our vision involves, with the help of these teachers, (and local volunteers) reaching out to the students, teaching them about God and encouraging them to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ. Currently Schools of Hope is working within two of the poorest schools in the city with grades 1 to 6 and approximately 750 students. These programs generally run with the Honduran school calendar which is February to November. There is ample opportunity for outreach in the community year round.

Randy and Judy Lundrigan who oversee the Schools of Hope program in this ground breaking work in Honduras, have been given permission by the Ministry of Education there to supply missionary teachers to serve in the schools on a voluntary basis to teach English as a Second Language and Computer Science using Bible Based curriculum. The teachers will have the freedom to talk with the students about Godly principles and morals and also have the opportunity to lead them to the Lord. Literally, there is the possibility of changing Public Schools into PAONL/ PAOC Christian Schools! This is an amazing avenue to share the Gospel!

The ideal candidates will be hands on with the children and desire to be involved in other outreach opportunities within the school and community. Candidates are required to supply their own materials and curriculum and need to be self-supporting.

For more information contact Randy and Judy at rlundrigan@paoc.org

International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church is Sunday, November 13, 2011

OTTAWA – Today around the world over 200 million are suffering for their faith in Jesus Christ. Each year, Christians in over 130 countries stand in prayer with our persecuted sisters and brothers through the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP). Join with us as Christians across Canada unite in prayer for our brothers and sisters who suffer because they declare their faith in Christ.

This year’s IDOP Canada theme is Victorious in Christ. Resources available at www.IDOP.ca focus on that theme which is based in Revelation 2:3 & 7:

3You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.

7Whoever has ears, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

While it may initially seem out of place to describe persecuted Christians as victorious, victory has two powerful spiritual meanings for Christians. First, victory means the victory that Christ won over death when he rose from the dead. Christ extends his victory to those who place their faith in him. Second, victory means persevering in our faith in Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit in spite of the trials or persecutions that may come our way. There are hundreds of thousands such victors who daily face persecution with the courage that comes through faith.

This year, as we remember our brothers and sisters who are suffering for their faith in Jesus, let us pray earnestly for their safety and for their freedom. Let’s pray for increased freedom to express their faith without persecution. And as we do so, may we also allow ourselves to be inspired and changed by their examples of faith and courage.

What difference do our prayers make? Persecuted Christians when asked what believers in the West can do for them, answer “pray”. They aren’t seeking to be rescued or removed from their situations. They seek the support of fellow Christians through prayer. Our prayers give spiritual and emotional support to suffering believers. Our prayers move the hand of God and change circumstances. Intercession through prayer helps the persecuted and those around them hold on to the peace and victory of Jesus.

IDOP 2011 will take place on Sunday, November 13th. If unable to participate in IDOP Sunday on this date, congregations are encouraged to set aside time on another day to remember our persecuted brothers and sisters. The important thing is to pray. The IDOP Canada partners have put together a freedownloadable resource kit and DVD film to assist congregations, groups and friends to pray effectively for persecutors and the persecuted church.

For more information about IDOP and the 2011 resource kit, go to www.idop.ca.

Please add IDOP Sunday on November 13th in your publication’s list or calendar of upcoming events.

Teen Challenge Canada to Offer NL Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation

September 2, 2011 - St. John’s, NL: Teen Challenge Canada has signed an agreement to assume ownership of a rural property on the outskirts of St. John’s in order to establish a residential treatment program for young men struggling with drug and alcohol addiction.

Teen Challenge is an international, non-profit Christian organization with almost 50 years’ experience in Canada. Its faith-based drug and alcohol rehabilitation program has a proven track record for the successful treatment of youth and adults with addictions issues. Independent studies have shown that five years after graduating from the 12-month residential program, 70% of those graduates have never returned to drugs or alcohol.

The 25-bed centre will be located on the site of the Circle Square Ranch on Fowlers Road in Manuels, and is expected to open within 2-3 years.

“For several years, a number of groups in the province have asked Teen Challenge Canada to bring this residential treatment program to Newfoundland to help address the needs of young men and adults who struggle with substance abuse and addiction,” said George Glover, the National Director of Teen Challenge.

“Many young men (and women) have left Newfoundland and Labrador to attend Teen Challenge programs across Canada. As a result, there has been keen interest from various sectors to bring our program to this province, where individuals can receive help for their addictions closer to home.”

In the coming months, Teen Challenge will launch a capital campaign to fund a new dormitory building and secure two years of operating costs. The organization will work closely with municipal authorities and community-based agencies and residents to ensure all interested parties are informed of the purpose and operations of the Teen Challenge treatment program.

“Our purpose is to offer a safe and effective place for participants in the program to address the issues that led to their addiction and begin to re-build their academic, vocational and life skills, and support networks,” said Mr. Glover. “Ours is a holistic approach to drug and alcohol rehabilitation, addressing the needs of mind, body and spirit. This faith-based approach has proven to be a powerful catalyst for change in people with life-controlling substance abuse issues.”

The Teen Challenge program also integrates skills and tools which are consistent with secular research and models of recovery and relapse prevention to supplement its faith-based foundation.

There are currently 17 Teen Challenge Centres in Canada and more than 1,000 programs operating in 82 countries around the world.
