It is located in front of the Shibuya Station Hachikō exit and stops vehicles in all directions to allow pedestrians to flood the entire intersection.

The modern toilet in Japan, sometimes referred to as the Super Toilet, and commonly known in Japanese as Washlet or as warm-water cleaning toilet seat is one of the most advanced types of toilet worldwide.

Segment 1: Getting into Kindergarten

Our lids have both turned 5 and now is the season to get them into a kindergarten, which is a much more involved process than it was when we were kids.

Once of the tool that are commonly used to evaluate your school choices is GreatSchools.org.

The George W. Bush No Child Left Behind Act.

Segment 2: This Week on Twitter

From the New York Times: Gym Class Isn’t Just Fun and Games Anymore.

From Huffington Post: Teaching Toddlers New Words: A Hands-Off Approach Builds Vocabulary .

From Slate: Tantrums: Why Toddlers Freak Out About Everything

Segment 3: The Year in Sports (So Far)

Ladies and Gentleman, the Superbowl Champion Baltimore Ravens.

Everyone’s second favorite team to watch (aside from their hometown team): The Golden State Warriors.

Joe and Saren discuss looking for work, the effect of stress on learning, and this week in sports.

[powerpress]

Segment 1: Looking for Work

To open episode 13, Saren and Joe talk about looking for work in the 21st century.

Segment 2: This American Life: Back to School

In the September 14th episode of TAM, Ira Glass talked with author Paul Tough about his book “How Children Succeed”. The traditional ways Americans measure kids abilities and intelligence has been to focus on cognitive abilities – conventional “book smarts,” using standardizing test scores. Tough’s theory is that we should be focusing much more attention on the “non-cognitive skills” – social, or soft skills.

Segment 3: This Week in Sports

The American League East is still up for grabs as the Yankees and Orioles are battling for the top spot, with the Red Sox in full spoiler mode.

The NFL is in the midst of a meltdown, as replacement refs have made extremely dubious calls in the last two nationally televised games, each of which seemed to have shifted the outcome of the games. Joe’s Pats lost as close game to the Ravens Sunday night, and the Seahawks appear to have stolen a victory from the Packers Monday, that has set off a maelstrom of commentary, and calls for the league to settle the officials strike this week.

After an extended break while Joe got a new job and moved from sunny Southern California to the Bay Area, the Postcast returns for a new fall season of weekly posts.

Segment One: Moving With Kids

While looking for work, resumes are often compared to your write up on LinkedIn.

Moving with Kids, Joe recommends a few tools that helped ease the move to the Bay Area:

GreatSchools.org.

Trulia.com is a real estate site with primarily agency listings for new houses. It’s a good resource to find neighborhoods by crime rates, schools ratings, local parks and activities, and general pricing of houses that have sold in the last six months.

Segment Two: Guys with Kids

The new fall TV season is in its opening weeks and the new comedy Guys With Kids pilot from Jimmy Fallon is the subject of our media review.
Almost half of pre-schoolers have used a tablet before they turned 5. 7 in 10 kids under 12 are using tablets at home, and when you compare the kids with tablets to those without, the kids with tablets score higher on every literacy measure. On top of all that, iPads in particular have a significantly positive impact on kids with learning disabilities and special needs. Besides, the kids really, really, really want one – pretty please.
