Back at long last!

Well I am shocked to see how long it has been since I posted on this blog! I have been making things in the meantime but I admit it has been less. Lots of things have changed.My husband retired and some of the children have left home. We've been making plans for a house move - with all the " oh dear we better tidy this bit and paint that wall" kind of stuff going on so crafting has taken a bit of a back seat. But I have been offered a spot in a shop in a very good position so decided to get the needles and felt out again. I have been busy with some nice colourful things.

I made a lots of little clippies, I do like these cute little things. They sort of make themselves, everytime I get a pair of buttons or a felt shape I get inspiration. This means I rarely make two pairs identical. They're so cheerful.

I also made some nice flowery head bands.

And now I am making this prototype for a glasses case with two cuddly kitties on the front. I hope it turns out like I imagine

I discovered I ran out of black embroidery silk so I have to wait till this arrives before I can finish them, so I will post a picture of the finished case next time.. and I promise I won't leave it so long this time

Selling in a real shop, what to look out for.

The perfect gift shop

Now you have perfected your craft making skills and you would love to get you items out there for people to buy them. It may seem perfect to get them in a real shop. So how to go about it? What to look out for? What are the pro's and con's?

To start with find a shop that is a good fit with your products. Don't feel you have to stick with craft shops because sometimes what you make can be a perfect fit for a different shop. Do you make slate cheeseboards? Try the local deli or cheese shop. Do you make appliqued shoe bags? Try the shoe shop.

Before getting in touch visit the shop as a customer. Find out a bit about the shop if you can, ask around. How long has it been there? Is it busy? What do people think of it?

Then go and visit the shop to enquire if they are interested in stocking your items. Make an appointment to see the person in charge and leave a business card.

A business card is a handy tool. Make yours eye-catching!

When you go to go to your appointment be prepared and professional. Turn up on time. Bring samples of your work. Make sure they are in a neat case or folder, not the bottom of your rucksack.

Be prepared in what you want to say about you and your work. If you make jewellery, clothes or bags or other items you can wear, wear them. Why would anyone feel the need to stock your items if you don't wear them yourself?

If they turn you down, don't be disheartened, just try somewhere else. It may just be that they are on the look-out for something else or they feel that it would clash with some items they already stock.

If your items are accepted, start with just a few, never more than you can afford to lose and make sure you have an itemised receipt of all stock left on every occasion.

You need to remember that you are handing your precious, handmade, beloved stock over to a shopkeeper. Ask yourself - do you trust this person? This is one of the reasons why meeting face-to-face is so important. Good communication is VITAL. This is from both parties. Creative people are often busy with their craft and shopkeepers with their shop but it is important that both parties answer each others queries promptly and accurately. Don't go into business with a shopkeeper who won't answer your questions!

Before handing over your stock you need assurances concerning the selling of your stock.

commission percentage
VAT collection if appropriate
damaged/lost or stolen stock
payment- where, when and how
return of items no longer on show
intervals of restocking

Get all agreements down in writing and signed by both parties. If the shopkeeper is unwilling to do so WALK AWAY.

Pro's of having your items in a shop

Someone does the selling for you

Products will be sold alongside other good quality items (if you choose the right shop!!!)

You may get tips and advise from the shopkeeper

Products are on view all day

Con's of selling in a shop

You will pay commission

Footfall may be low (make sure to do your homework!)

Stuff gets handled a lot - it may get damaged

Things may get stolen

Selling arts and crafts, when are you ready?

Aaahhh, craft supplies!

You have been having fun with balls of wool and you figured out to crochet. Paper and card call to you like sirens and you stay up late to make cards and painting a pretty picture makes you very, very happy. Does that mean you can start selling your creations?

Are you ready to sell your crafts?

You could try, but unless you are super talented it takes time to develop your skills. Jumping in before you are ready would lead to disappointment and discouragement. Nothing would be more discouraging than having people pick at your work because your stitching is not up to scratch or your brush skills leave something to be desired. The more you do the more you learn so keep going! You may have incredibly creative ideas but your implementation may not be up to scratch yet. Ask a honest friend to tell you where you need to improve, don't be afraid of constructive criticism. Practice makes perfect, so enjoy making gifts and cards for friends and family to develop these skills. As you get better people will start asking you to make some items for them. When that happens you may have reached the point where you are ready to sell to the general public. It is worth remembering that strangers are more likely to be critical of your work so be prepared to still get some criticism!

So now you are ready, you have a number of pretty items to sell. Now what can you do to make your items more saleable?

Always finish your items neatly Quirky items are great and loved by many but make sure you still finish items tidily. Don't leave threads hanging or let the cats sleep on your work. Nobody wants to have a stained, cat fur covered tablet case. Also make sure that seams will stay put and don't come undone with a little use. (Test run your product!)

Stains and cat hair are not attractive.

When you have straight edges in your work make sure you cut straight lines with the aid of a ruler and sharp scissors or a rotary cutter, Because a raggedy edge to your work where it is meant to be straight is distracting and off putting. When mounting prints, artwork and photographs place things straight and central (unless you specifically mean them to be offset). It looks far more professional if you get the picture mounted than just popping it in a frame.

Package it beautifully To attract buyers your project has to look beautiful. Your packaging has to be spot on. If you sell cards make sure the cello bags are the right size ( these come in many, many sizes) A card that sloshes about in a bag to big for it just does not have the edge. Also people like to see a small sticker or stamp on the card with your logo/name. You can buy these from for example from Moo Cards or Vista or you can have a personalised stamp made with your business name like the ones here

These will be useful to if you sell other items too. For example jewellery looks much better in a pretty box. You can "brand" your box with the stamp or sticker too. Plain boxes can be "jazzed up" with washi tape or ribbons. For a rustic look raffia or twine can look great. You'd be surprised how often customers will actually comment on how something is presented. Lots of great ideas to be found in the internet like here Also Pinterest is a great place to get ideas for packaging.

Get your prices right One of the hardest things to get right is your pricing, worthy of a article of its own. Make sure to price all your materials but don't forget to pay yourself. Value your own work and the skills you have applied. Don't forget you are the designer and the crafts person who made the items, don't undersell yourself.

All of the above go for any selling method. If you sell on-line something else has to be considered

Photograph it clearly and in focus Nothing is more off putting than dark, out-of-focus photographs. This is your shop front when you sell on-line. Because people can't actually touch your items you need to give them the second best thing. Good clear photos. Make sure you include a sharp close-up.

H2Only-the 4th day

Well I meant to blog every day to keep you updated but it turned out going cold turkey on coffee is not easy...I started the first day with a slight headache that turned into a raging, monstrous migraine. I took painkillers but ended up in bed not being very well at all. The next day was slightly better, as long as I kept sunglasses on throughout the day but still had to go and have a lie down to ease the headache. Hubby surprised me with a lovely fish and chips dinner so I did not have to concentrate on cooking (I dread to think how that would have turned out!)
Still I drank the hot water, the cold water and... yeah more water.

I am glad my daughters and my nine year old son are joining in because it would be very hard to keep going without them egging me on.
The third day I had an idea... I remembered that you could get paracetamol with caffeine. So on went the sunglasses and off I went to visit the chemist. It turned out fabulous, the tablets worked in about 20 min and I could feel the cloud lifting together with the pain. At least now I could look after my family properly and maybe get some crafting done too.
But I had forgotten my son and I were invited to a party in the park. So as a precaution I popped on the sunglasses and shoved a bottle of water in my bag. I need not have worried, as soon as I arrived I was greeted by my friend Gillie with a nice cup of sparkly water. Now wasn't that nice? She has also made a generous contribution to the fund, so thank you very much! We had a super time and did not feel we missed out at all. In the evening at home I found my other son had made some super delicious brownies so I felt super blessed!

Long time nothing to do on this blog, but today I thought I would be back to blogging. Lots has happened but the blog got a little forgotten. Youngest daughter emigrated and got married older daughter started volunteering with the RNLI.
So a few weeks ago on a nice sunny day we drove to New Quay and watched our girl being hoisted in and out of a whopping great, big, yellow helicopter.

Not many people realise that this is a charity and that all the crew are volunteers. Obviously they all need safety equipment like life jackets, helmets, boots and many other items. The boats are constantly maintained to a high standard and need replacing from time to time.

So this is what it is all about, To raise some funds for this vital emergency service my daughters, my nine year old son and I have joined the RNLI's H2only challenge. This means from 5pm this day we only drink water, no tea, coffee or anything else. We just enjoyed our last cup of tea

and from now on it is water only. I shall let you know how it is going, but what I would really like from you is that you would support us by giving a donation to this page. This will go to the RNLI direct and will help save many lives. So please make it worth our while to suffer coffee withdrawal!

Just a short post as I am kind of busy but I really wanted to share this with everyone. My youngest daughter loves music and has been playing piano since she was 5 years old. She has been playing in a local jazz band since she was 14. However her greatest love is composing. Her dream is to compose for games and film. Well she was very happy to send me this link I am sharing with you now, she has worked hard at this and even if you are not into chemistry this video is kind of magical to watch but the music is all done by my girl...I am proud!

Yesterday it was my son's day to choose dinner. Always a tense moment as he is a trained chef and so often comes up with complex recipes. This day was no exception. He told me he wanted Calzones. "What is that when it's at home?" I asked him. It turned out they are like folded over pizzas. So off we tootled to the shops after chef had made the pizza dough and left it to prove.

We bought basil, mozzarella, panchetta and some black olives. When we got back home the dough was divided up and made into small rounds.

Then we chopped olives, ham,sun-dried tomatoes,capers, mozzarella and grated some cheese.

We heaped on the yummies and folded over the pizza bases. Then pressed the edges down firmly and washed with egg-wash.

In the oven till they were nice and brown. Some filling escaped but there was plenty yummy stuff left.

I can promise you they didn't last long!

I haven't got a precise recipe as Chef told me what to do, but here is one I found on the internet. It has different fillings but you can put in what you like. Give it a try and let me know how you got on. Enjoy!

Ikea coffee table re-vamp

It has been rather busy at home, with people being ill and granny staying, so I haven't had a lot of time to make or blog. Today I managed to do something though, with a little hand from the poorly man. I have this Ikea coffee table. It came with a glass top but glass top tables and children don't mix so we removed the top years ago and replaced it with a MDF one. I had painted it in a nice cream colour to match the room, but it had started to look well, frankly, disgusting.

As you can see it looked really horrible, no amount of scrubbing made it look better.

So I got some "faux leather" from the Range (£4.50 a meter)

Four brass corner pieces and screws (about £3 from Ebay)

and I used a small drill,a staple gun a small hammer and a pair of scissors.

I started stapling the fabric on one side of the table top and then turned to the opposite site and stretched it as hard and as evenly as I could.

Then I cut the fabric right to the corners and folded them as tightly as I could. Then I stapled the rest, making sure the fabric stayed taut.

I hammered some of the staples in a bit further with the hammer as the staple gun didn't always get them to go in fully.

Then to finish the corners:

This will keep the table top located (which is a huge improvement) and it protects the corners from extra wear and tear.

There it is, the finished and definitely better looking table top.

Well what do you think? Is it an improvement? It was less than £10 to do and took maybe 40 minutes. It will look pretty for a while at least.

Upcycle no1

Remember that top I bought a few days ago?

I loved the pretty edging on it but I did not like it as a top at all.

So this is what I did with it:

I cut off the bottom part of the top

Then I snipped of the strap,

Gave it a quick press

So I could turn it into a bow

Then I pinned and stitched the fabric on the bottom of a new vest top I picked up for a few quid

I stitched the bow on and this is the finished dress:

I think it looks quite smashing on Esmeralda, don't you agree?

She is even wearing a matching necklace. You can find this one and others like it here

Well I hope you agree with me that it is an improvement and that it has given this rather pretty fabric a new lease of life. Let me know what you think.

Home Sweet Home

I haven't done a "Home Sweet Home" post for ages, sorry about that. Sometimes it is hard to see the special things in your own home. Even today my "thing" I want to share is not really a household item that I treasure, but a very useful addition to my sewing room.

Meet Esmeralda:

I have recently taken up sewing again ( I used to make a lot of my own clothes, including my own wedding dress) So a few weeks ago I decided to purchase a dress form as I thought it would be a lot easier to do my alterations and new projects. As is normal in our house I gave her a name (even spiders get named before we throw them out) and she is from here on known as Esmeralda. Hopefully she will be my helper for many years to come. But for now she is wearing a prototype wedding dress which I can't show you yet for obvious reasons. I hope to get some sewing done tomorrow but as I have to dentist patients and a poorly hubby to look after that may be just wishful thinking. You'll find out tomorrow as will I

Not much to report as I have had a busy day at a craft fair.

My little cake stand with felt baby booties. They were admired a lot, someone even wanted to frame some.

This was the quiet before the storm....well the breeze. Not done too badly as I made my table fee, petrol money and lunch plus a teeny bit extra. That is what I call a successful craft fair. And the coffee was good too.

I had a rummage through a couple of charity shops in the last few days. The first one was really dire, drab colours and really old stuff. The crazy thing was there was not one item I saw that was under £4. I just walked out. I have noticed this before that items are much more expensive than they used to be. I often bought things on the off chance as they looked nice and I might please someone with them. Now I look at items and go "HOW much?" I realise that it is for charity, but instead of spending maybe £5 or£10 every two/ three weeks I now very rarely buy anything at all. I presume I am not the only one so takings must be down for all these charities. I wandered down the road to Store 21 and managed to find some BRAND NEW tops for £1.99 each and a couple of scarves for £4.

Then on Thursday I decided to check one of my local charity shops out to see if it was the same. I walked in and immediately I could see some nice items. Unfortunately the prices were higher than they used to be, but at least the clothes were nice.

Here are the items I bought, you can see the three new tops (top left and bottom right) and the scarves that I plan to use to turn them into something unique. I also picked up a cute red blouse that I plan to change into a waistcoat. I love the teeny heart buttons and the textured flowers. There was a denim skirt too, with loads of pretty details but also a tiny hole. I have got some crafty plans for it too and the hole will not be visible any more. There was a top with a beautiful embroidered edging. No idea what I am going to do with it but it will be something special eventually. The long dress was given to me and it will take a bit of imagination to make it pretty but I will succeed I am sure to turn it into something much more wearable. I will keep you posted on the progress on these projects.

I would love to hear your thoughts about charity shops, upcycling and reusing clothes.

Ok maybe not for everyone but this, for me, was one of the highlights of my holiday. I went to visit a Saxophone shop. Now there aren't that many of them so it was amazing to find one in a small place called Gorssel.

This is it, a specialist saxophone shop. Better than a sweetshop for me.

I wanted to touch them all! Some are collectors items and others were just very nice brand new saxophones. I imagine them all as different individuals with different voices.

For the uninitiated this may look like a cigarette counter but it is in fact a massive selection of reeds, mouth pieces and some other odds and ends.

And here I am admiring a wonderful selection of other instruments, a couple of flutes and some rather handsome clarinets.

An here is a craftsman I admire. I play the saxophone (not terribly well, but I am trying) but the mechanism is so complex. I don't think I could put one together again if I took it apart.

So did I buy a new saxophone? I wish. No. I still have my trusted and beautiful sounding Conn. I did however get to try an artificial reed which I absolutely love and my friends bought me a wonderful new harness, so now I can actuall play for longer without my neck hurting (saxophones are HEAVY).

Trying to get more done in a day.

I have been finding it increasingly difficult to find time to do things. I mean arty/crafty things. Housework is one of those thankless tasks. You do them, turn around and it is back almost as if by magic. Then there is the phone. I almost always find that as soon as I start doing something the phone starts ringing and interrupts what you are doing, which in the case of arty/crafty things completely ruins the "flow". I get frustrated, feel it is not worth starting anything and I get an attack of artist block. Then I end up looking at lovely crafty things on the internet and spend ages on Pinterest to overcome this. Good to get creative juices flowing but bad idea, because it eats into creative time. So I have decided to do something about it. I am going to put some point of action into place. I think the fact that I started a 30-day-blog challenge has just helped me clarify things in my mind.
So, what am I going to do? Well this:

get up a little earlier.(for obvious reasons as it is quieter in the mornings)
make lists of things to do.(to prioritise tasks)
use a timer to set a fixed limit to task (helps to focus on task in hand)
finish of works in progress (they have a habit of stifling the creative mind)
tidy a bit of the house/craft room at a time (so it does not overwhelm me)

I will let you know how I get on with this. Are there any points of action you would recommend? I am open to other suggestions so please leave a comment.

Although I have been very busy doing all sorts of non-crafty things and important things like sewing dresses I have actually managed to relax with a bit of crochet. As you know I am quite new to crochet but I have been attempting several new things. I started with a simple granny square and now I am trying different stitches and patterns. Here are a few pieces I have recently finished and one work-in-progress:

A slightly different take on the granny squares, in a lovely wool mix yarn in purple, pink, sage and dark green. Fully lined with a pink cotton lining.

Hard to think of a cold winter but with this snood you'd be nice and warm. Acrylic yarn, so no itchies right next to your skin.

And a work-in-progress. I usually have a few of these. This is going to be a small handbag. I will post a picture of the finished article soon, together with another green one that is lurking at the bottom of my project bag, waiting to be sewn together.

Does anyone have any special requests? Colour combinations or ideas? Let me know and maybe I cam make you something unique.

Today was a bit busy. I am sewing something rather special, but I can't share 'cause it's secret. Did you guess? Yes indeed I am sewing a wedding dress for my daughter but for obvious reasons I can't blog about it yet. So for today you will get a few more arty photos, hope you like them. Some I hope to turn into paintings and I will of course share that in the future.

Remember those painted shutters in Deventer? My husband had the idea to put people in front of them as if they are part of the landscape. It works quite well don't you think?

We also went to a lovely place called Harderwijk, where we visited the Dolfinarium . We very much enjoyed ourselves. Apart from enjoying the antics of the obvious dolphins and other sea creatures we also had a walk around Harderwijk harbour. I managed to get some lovely photos of the boats there. Hopefully I will soon find some time to paint a few... once the Big Dress is done.

My mum and dad celebrated their Sapphire anniversary this July. They have been married for 65 years.My dad is 88 and my mum is 86. Dad struggles with his feet and finds walking hard and mum is a superstar. She had an accident last October where she was knocked of her scoot-mobile and broke her leg. Her first thought was not for herself but for my dad, she was crying that he would be so worried. They actually had to tell her to calm down. Now she is fully back on her feet, fortunately.
We felt that we wanted to celebrate their amazing achievement as a family so we made our way over to the Netherlands.

My parents received letters from the new King and Queen, the province of Limburg and the Town Council.

They also received a beautiful bunch of flowers:

and a massive cake from the town council

I suppose they don't get many of these anniversaries.

We met up with my brother and his wife and daughter in Roermond and we had a gorgeous time in restaurant "De Kiosk". My dad, who doesn't like going out much thoroughly enjoyed himself. And my mum just loved having her family together.

My eldest son had made them a beautiful fruitcake which he decorated with my mum's favourite flowers, pansies.

It was a huge success, we even shared it with the staff of the restaurant, who really loved it too. (They had been very accommodating and supplied plates and forks for the cake). I hope when my husband and I have been married this long we can have a wonderful time like this too. Mind, we still have a long way to go ;)

Yes I know it has been ages since I blogged. It has been hectic and some bad things and some good things have happened.
As my regular readers know I love my pets. I have several cats and two dogs. In the last three months I have however lost two of my cats. Umlaut (so named because he has two dots on the end of his tail)

He had to be put to sleep as he had Feline Infectious Peritonitis . It was something I had never heard of. He was lethargic and his tummy began to swell very quickly. We miss him a lot.

And Ice

Now Ice was my "consolation cat". My children bought him for me after I lost my baby daughter. He was rather special as he always read my moods and he would actually wipe the tears from my cheeks (yes I know he may just have been chasing them) but he would follow me around when I felt low and demand that I fuss him. Strangely I always felt better after. What happened to him was sad. He was an indoor cat, and was occasionally allowed out while we were out. He always stayed clear of the road and spend his time in the garden. However he missed his pal Umlaut and went looking for him.... He strayed onto the road and got knocked down. My husband found him on the road and we had to take him to the vets to be put to sleep as his injuries were to great. So you can probably understand why I did not feel like blogging much.

My husband could see my distress and got me a most wonderful present to fill the huge cat shaped hole. Let me introduce Bertie:

I am sure he will pop up now and then on the blog, just like the others did. Tomorrow I will share some of the good things that have happened and then after that I will be back with arts and crafts.

New crafty venue in Lampeter (Ceredigion)

I was very happy to discover that our old Post Office in Lampeter has been put to excellent use. It has been converted to a wonderful, welcoming and inspiring wool shop called Red Apple Yarn. It has a cosy atmosphere and there are tables and chairs for those who want to sit and knit or crochet. They run little workshops for knitting and crochet lovers. Have a look at the pictures and you will get a feel of the place. I am sure you'll agree it is a lovely place. If you are near or in Lampeter be sure to pop in! It has been a while again since I blogged. No, I had not forgotten to but life had taken over for a while. I have been Granny-sitting for a forthnight and it had rather tired me out and on top of that I caught a most horrible cold. I am still getting over that (still coughing well) but in the mean time I have been busy with the crochet hook. Considering I have only recently taken up crochet, the crochet bug has truly gotten hold of me. I have made a few bags.

Not too bad for a novice crocheter is it? I am still busy crocheting bags, but if you have any suggestions on what else I should attempt, please let me know. I love a comment!

As well as this I have been busy setting up a website for a group of Welsh crafters. I don't know if I ever told you how much I like setting up websites? Not a lot is the answer. I am not really a technophobe but I find I have problem with understanding how these things work. I managed it though, even if I had to ask for a teeny tiny bit of help from my son. Yeah a blog blank. Or more accurately a brain blank. I have been busy doing things but not in a very productive way. Over the last few weeks I have been learning to crochet but my mind has also been turning to new and old projects. Remember the felt booties I made a few weeks ago?

I have been wondering how to package them. I looked up various boxes but most of them are too big and just not special enough to make them a keepsake. Then a friend suggested calico bags. That got me thinking, if I made calico bags I could stamp them or embroider them with babies name and date of birth. So that is what I will be doing tomorrow, making my first bags and I will post them on here and hopefully you will give me some feedback on them.

I also have had an order of some more felt and glass necklaces like this one.

I have been searching for more tray pendants like this heart shaped one, but in different shapes but they are kind of hard to find. I finally tracked some oval ones down so hopefully they will arrive soon so I can make some more.

At the same time my big wallpaper books still sit there and I am itching to make some more beads but my craft room is still FREEZING. I managed a couple of hours in there on Monday but I had to have my radiator on full blast and wear several jumpers. After a while my fingers go all stiff :(

So to keep myself from mischief I have been carrying on with the crochet. I got a book called "200 crochet blocks for blankets,throws and afghans" from Amazon and I have just started a project from it with the lovely wool I showed you in a previous post. I haven't got a photo as I only have one square done but I will keep you posted .
