fat girl problems.

2012-06-25T18:00:00.002-05:00

If you're anything like me, once fall rolls around, you're thinking "I have at least six months until I have to wear shorts and swimsuits again. EAT ALL OF THE THINGS." And then you eat all of the things. And then, before you know it... spring arrives, and then summer, and you're still kind of a fatty. Life is hard, guys. I've had virtually all the time in the world to get skinny over the past year, but haven't been able to find the motivation to do so. I'm the type that gets all gung-ho about working out... for like, a week. Then it's back to eating Creamy Chicken Noodz on the couch in my sweatpants while watching HGTV. (If you've never had Creamy Chicken Noodz, don't start. It's a slippery slope into obesity.)

Anyway - I've come to find that I am a visual person. If I have something tangible that says "WORK OUT, FATTY" in a place that I'm unable to overlook, I'm more likely to work out. My freshman year of college, my roommate and I printed off photos of Victoria's Secret models and taped them up by our computers as motivation. I was skinny then, so I must have been doing something right... amidst the many nights of binge drinking.

So, I made this in like five minutes. I've already been made fun of for it, but I could care less. It has actually helped motivate me quite a bit. Something about being able to write down a workout makes me feel accomplished. Being able to see the week at large has also been a big help, in a "here's what I've done, here's what I need to do" type of way. So here's this. It's cheesy, whatever. Use it if you'd like. Make fun of me for using it if you'd like. Eat some Creamy Chicken Noodz if you'd like.

"Yes You Can" graphic from www.puglypixel.com

I've also found that if I have someone to work out with, I'm less likely to skip a workout. As a result, I've recruited my "newly-available" friend, Maddie, as a workout partner. We work out together on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I've also caught up with my aforementioned college roommate, Alex, who just so happens to be a new mom with some (like, three... maybe.) extra lbs to shed. (At least she has an excuse.) Alex, her babe, and I walk (swiftly, mind you... practically a jog.) around the Walnut Creek trail every Tuesday and catch up on life. It's been so great to reconnect with her and have that time to laugh about old memories and mistakes we made while in Iowa City. As for Thursdays and weekends, I'm on my own.

What do you do to stay in shape? Any foolproof methods you think I should try? Comment away.

Also - here is a public cry to anyone in Omaha that enjoys rollerblading - I NEED A PARTNER. It is mildly embarrassing to rollerblade alone.

Here's to getting fit and not fat(ter).

junkstock.

2012-06-22T18:58:00.003-05:00

Some people call it "junking," I call it, well, not that. If you are a fan of thrifting, refurbished furniture, and vintage goodies, you should be going to Junkstock this weekend. Located in Omaha on a farm just off 192nd and Dodge, Junkstock is an outdoor festival of sorts - filled with vintage finds, good music, and food trucks!

Maddie and I went this morning around 10:30 and were dying over some of the unique items we saw. Quite a few things had been picked over and many of the pieces we fell in love with had the dreaded "SOLD" sign on them, but the selection was pretty impressive, nonetheless. The early bird gets the worm, I suppose.

Aside from Junque Factory and Scout, Celadon Goods was the vendor that caught my eye. Beautifully refinished furniture that was right up my alley. Modern colors with a vintage flair. Maddie and I chatted with owner, Kimberly Wolfe, who mentioned that although she doesn't currently have a retail space, she frequently posts her new pieces to her Facebook page. Definitely check it out. I will undoubtedly be keeping my eye on Celadon Goods. Naturally, my dream dresser has already sold. Look at this beauty... Sigh.

There were between twenty or thirty vendors at Junkstock, all of which had something different to offer. Wanting to take photos of our adventure, I had my Holga camera in tow and took an entire roll of film, only to find that my camera is apparently broken and the roll had no exposures on it. Sad end to the day and unfortunately, only a couple of shoddy iPhone photos to share.

Maddie and I in front of the tire barn.

Brad Hoshaw was our musical entertainment for the morning. Also - look at that orange couch. I think we need another to match our current one.

Everything was adorably decorated and easy to navigate. I hope that this becomes an annual tradition in Omaha!

Peace, Music, and Junk, folks.

some days we go on photo adventures.

2012-06-12T21:09:00.001-05:00

Some days we go on photo adventures. Today was one of those days. Albeit a short adventure, Kylie felt like dressing up and I felt like I needed a creative outlet. It has been quite a while since I've taken my camera out for fun. The most action it has seen lately has been at weddings where I have been acting as a backup photographer for my best friend's photography business. (Ashley Otte Photography - she is amazing.) Today was the perfect day to break out of my rut.

As I have mentioned before, I love Omaha for its little treasures. Tucked away in the beautiful Field Club neighborhood, you'll find one of my favorites. The following photos were taken at Gerald R. Ford's birthplace.

Maybe this means I will also break out of my blogging rut. I make no promises.

Stay tuned.

maybe it was Memphis.

2012-05-16T23:01:00.000-05:00

A friend of mine recently sent a few songs that sparked memories from my childhood. (I was surprised to find recollection of anything other than Barbies, Mall Madness, and that mud pie topped with Oreos that I once convinced my sister to eat.) I've been listening to the best of 80's/90's country for three days now. You should do the same.

I've had a shocking amount of YouTube plays on this hit- "Maybe It Was Memphis" by Pam Tillis. SO good, guys.

I received a shipment of jewelry makin' accessories from China last week. Their shipping costs are SO cheap, but it's a workout to even open the damn package.

all of THAT fit into THIS! (that's what she sa..........nevermind.......)

With some charms from China and plumbing parts from Lowe's, I made a couple of super simple necklaces. I've been wearing the feather non-stop.

Feel free to contact me if interested in either design! (or any of my other creations I've posted on the blog.)

I attempted to make this bracelet that has been flooding my Pinterest feed. I've purchased the wrong string THREE times now. This will require more practice and patience.

I'm a truly awful gift-giver, but I wanted to craft something special for my mom's birthday & Mother's Day. You might find the description a bit corny and you might not believe my forever-sunny disposition was able to design something so sentimental... but I DID.

The birds perched above the cage represent my parents. The three colored beads (separated by turquoise) are the birthstones of my brother, myself, and my sister. They symbolize us "leaving the nest" (or cage, in this case.) I purposely put them to be worn on her left, over the heart.

You see, I do have a soul.

I solved a minor organization issue. I used to pile my most frequently worn necklaces on my lamp. This usually resulted in choosing the bottom necklace each morning and whispering obscenities as they all fell to the floor in a tangled mess. I had a major "WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT SOONER?" moment. I bet you will, too.

Command hooks, upside down inside a lampshade.

Voila!

I've been on a real heart-wrenching "I want a puppy more than a boyfriend" kick lately. So, I'll leave you to stare in the eyes of this adorable creature while I cry myself to sleep because I can't have one at our current house.

a little drive.

2012-05-16T22:15:00.001-05:00

Last Sunday, I was heading back to Omaha and decided it was too nice to go home. I spent about five hours driving gravel & back roads north of Council Bluffs, to Crescent & Missouri Valley, Iowa + Hitchcock Park and DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge. Because of the proximity to the Missouri River, I was able to see the devastation from last year's flood that still cripples much of the area.

(I plan on going hiking + camping @ Hitchcock soon! Join me?)

from my favorite place on a gloomy day- with a view of Big Lake in Council Bluffs to the left & Omaha's skyline in the distance @ Lewis & Clark Monument Park

I love my hometown - Carson, Iowa

Sunny Side is looking real nice & clean with plenty of vacancies in Missouri Valley, Iowa.

I've loved watching the deterioration of this shed in Carson over the years.

The photos below show DeSoto Refuge & nearby houses that were destroyed/evacuated during the flood.

I don't know if this restaurant was closed before the flood or they shut-down during, but I have always loved the building/roof.

aged walls in Carson, Iowa

It was so relaxing to spend the afternoon driving with no destination in mind. Despite the immense damage to the area, I found beauty in the life that still thrives & the green that now grows.

I should do that more often. I guess I can set a New Years resolution in May, right?

dry spell.

2012-05-15T00:37:00.004-05:00

Well, friends... it's been a while, huh? I/We clearly have been slacking on this whole blogging thing lately. I wish I could say it's because I won the lottery or some dreamboat of a wealthy man whisked me away on a trip around the world. (I would totally go, if you know anyone...)

I recently battled mono and kicked its ass, after it kicked mine for a couple of weeks. I couldn't move/eat/sleep/brush my teeth/shower for days. I was gross... So gross. I don't know how I contracted that stupid illness. I haven't known anyone with mono since I was in college. I thought I had mono for six years, until I was finally diagnosed with narcolepsy instead. It's not fun but at least I now have an excuse to get out of that Warrior Dash I signed up for months ago. My spleen is definitely fine by now, but why wouldn't I utilize that excuse for as long as possible? (Speaking of- Does anyone want to buy my Dash spot? I can't climb walls and I will gag if I crawl through mud & it accidentally gets in my mouth.)

As all of our loyal followers may have noticed, it's been over a month since I've blogged. Surprisingly enough, I HAVE actually done some fun/neat things during that time. I'll split the excitement into several posts but here are some updates for you stalkers.

I wore this outfit two days in a row because I liked it so much. I'm clean.

Maddie is a hair goddess. I also rocked this hairstyle for two days- I purposely avoided sleep so I wouldn't mess it up. Worth it.

I mean, who doesn't take outfit pictures in the bar bathroom? (favorite.dress.ever.)

My oldest & greatest friend, Shauna, recently graduated with a degree in Education. I admire those who teach & I truly don't know if I'd have the patience to do so. I'm so proud of and happy for Shauna. She had a little graduation party last weekend. It was so great to celebrate & catch up + see other old friends.

Let's not talk about that part in my bangs.

I am not good with hot-glue.

Thoreau.

I cleaned this baby and added a basket & bell. What a beaut! Now, if I could only learn to fix it correctly. The brakes could use some love from a professional.

Kelly is really into rollerblading for some reason, like it's 1997 or something. My ankles refuse to work with rollerblades, so falling is inevitable & I look like an absolute d-bag. Now that my bike is fixed, we can blade/bike together without risking a painful fall on my ass! (Unless I wreck my bike... Maybe I should stick to walking...)

They are spicing these up along the interstate by adding some more beautiful banners- designed by local artists. I love.

I have to be up in (less than) five hours, yet I'm wide awake. I guess that's what I get for succumbing to my narcolepsy and allowing a one-hour turned four-hour afternoon nap. Oops?

listen.

2012-04-27T17:08:00.000-05:00

Check out these tracks and have a lovely weekend!

new things & a day-date with myself.

2012-04-11T19:59:00.000-05:00

As I've mentioned before, my work schedule allows for a mini vacation every week & I couldn't be more grateful. The four-day weekends are incredible. The three-day weekends never seem to be enough (but I'll take 'em.) Don't get me wrong... I typically do nothing productive with the majority of my free-time. However, I did manage to finish laundry, clean my disastrous room (it's already unorganized again,) and make a couple of necklaces.

I believe both necklaces have been claimed... but I DO have the supplies to make at least one more of each. :) If interested, feel free to shoot me (Kylie) an email or a Facebook message. (Click on my name button on the right of this page for my contact details.)

This afternoon, I ventured out for a little day-date with myself to peruse a few stores and shops (while enjoying this perfect weather.) I spotted this gorgeous buffet (in excellent condition) at Salvation Army. Seriously- will someone go purchase this pretty lady?

Salvation Army Thrift Store @ 2551 Dodge St

I finally ventured into Midwest Pickers. I hurriedly made my way through but didn't find much that sparked my interest. I think their merchandise is likely hit-or-miss, so maybe I'll find some treasures next time!

I also stopped in the Old Market and made my rounds to the usual spots: Joe's Collectibles, Second Chance Antiques, Fairmount Antiques, and reServe. While walking around, I made my way into Jackson Street Booksellers. I could spend hours, days, and weeks in that place. The majority of the book groups are labeled, so that's extremely helpful if you're looking for something specific.

Did you know that some geniuses were evidently unaware that Titanic was a TRUE STORY?!

The Daily What

Have you lost all faith in humanity yet? Are you, too, contemplating a direct message to each of those Twitter users and questioning whether they graduated from the 5th grade? I... I just... I just can't believe the stupidity.

Are you friends with your parents on Facebook? I was reluctant to approve the friendship request, but I figured I really don't have that much to hide from my mom (anymore.) Over the weekend, she added some fairly embarrassing Easter photos from the past. I'm only going to show the semi-acceptable one. The other should be burned (short hair, dorky glasses, weird stance/facial expression, AND knee-high socks. What? Why?)

Yep... that's me... looking kind of "special" while my mullet-haired brother holds me up in his karate pajamas. At least I grew into that head... (that's a lie. It's still huge.)

And here is a photo of Douglas... I know most of you are probably wanting to see the precious gal.

We know... she's the cutest. Look at those paws!

Well, I'm hungry so it's time to burn dinner.... again.

i heart...

who doesn't Google how to use a charcoal grill?

2012-04-05T21:55:00.000-05:00

Having the chance to utilize a backyard for grilling, yard games, and hanging out was one of the main reasons Kelly & I chose to rent a house. Despite the yard work that tags along, having a patio/backyard is a 100% improvement over having nothing at our old place.

One downfall: we had to build our own patio area. As much as many of you view myself & Kelly as home-improvement masters & DIY goddesses, laying thirty 40-pound cement pavers on the ground isn't as easy as it seems.

Problem 1.) I somehow envisioned us transporting all thirty stones in my car: a 2006 Nissan Altima. No dice, genius.

Problem 2.) My mom and Shawn had to save our asses with their brand new Harley Davidson themed truck. This probably wasn't how they wanted to use their new investment.

Problem 3.) I can hardly lift a 5-pound hand weight in each arm every time I work out. (6 days a week, in case you were wondering......)

Problem 4.) My hands hurt after the ceremonious landing of the first stone on the sand/dirt and I wanted to give up right away.

Problem 5.) We didn't exactly follow my mother's instructions that guided us to "make sure the ground is even." It's not. You can even tell how uneven via photo below:

nice, right?

Despite the instability of the patio, we will probably neglect to fix it & set our patio furniture down anyway.

Also, we picked up a grill. It's the cheapest/smallest one we could find. It's charcoal. .....Do you know how to use a charcoal grill? Who knew the coals don't stay visually ignited in flames the entire time? Kelly risked her life by using half a can of lighter-fluid until Google search results informed us that the coals just needed time to heat. WHO KNEW?

This is a classy koozie (Kelly's.) And that is our precious little grill, cooking some chicken to perfection. Also, you may notice we don't have our patio furniture at the moment so we upcycled some plastic bins for footrests.

First night of grilling = a success. Who wants to bring some steaks and kabobs over so we can grill a friendly feast?

This past weekend, Kelly & I attended a baby shower for our friend, Alycia. I have never seen a more adorable mother-to-be, seriously. She is the cutest. She and David recently purchased a home in the Benson area of Omaha & it was the first visit for both Kelly & myself. I know I keep saying "cute," but seriously.... CUTEST house. It has the perfect balance of modern updates and vintage/retro charm. I'm jealous. If they ever move out, I think I'll be first in line to take residency. :)

Great food, laughs, mimosas, and fun in the sun were all inclusive at the event. It was the perfect Sunday afternoon and it was great to see all of our girls. (Can we do that more often, please?!)

Kelly & I put a little bucket of baby goodies together. We also made a shadow box for the new baby boy's room.

Emily and Corrie found some adorable iron-on appliques. We also attempted to use fabric markers... Mine ("Owl Always Love You") looks like the work of a 2nd grader. My bad, Baby Cooper.

If you had ever walked through our house, you may have noticed the awkward positioning of our living room furniture. We decided to rearrange this week & I feel like it's a whole new world.

Dougie looks like she was photo-shopped in there. We have so much room for activities!

I finally got to showcase this beaut. It belonged to my mom's fiance/eternal manfriend's aunt who passed away. Isn't it awesome?

How many of our readers had Xanga blogs back in the day? If you did, try to find that old online shame-blog. Prepare to feel humiliated. Kelly & I read through ours last night and I felt so embarrassed for Kylie circa 2005-2006. Did firehotquotes.com narrate my entire life? Why did I listen to Lindsay Lohan and Ashlee Simpson? Why did I find it necessary to post the lyrics to SIX Carrie Underwood songs in one entry? I'm so ashamed.

I'm going to keep that available so I can go back to ensure my life HAS improved whenever I'm in doubt.

Henderson out!

(this was my Xanga tagline, like Ryan Seacrest. .... I was a mess.)

look, a nook.

2012-03-29T15:18:00.002-05:00

I finally got around to refinishing the nightstand I bought off of Craigslist for $5 (from a guy who was presumably living in his storage shed) and then ruined with glossy yellow paint. It looks so much better now. I love the floral detailing on it. That's the thing about antique pieces, the craftsmanship and attention to detail are worlds better than modern furniture.

Stack of vintage Holiday mags picked up for $6 at Imaginarium in Benson.

Last night I was racking my brain for ideas to finish off the empty corner by my nightstand. I called up my momma and asked her to bring me this lovely vintage wicker chair that's been collecting dust in my parents' basement for a few years since their remodel. I wrapped the leftover fabric from our housewarming party photo backdrop (which I also used on the insides of my vanity drawers) around the dated green plaid cushions and added a polaroid wall of my Instagram prints, and voila, behold... my new reading nook. IT'S SO COZY.

Friends with sewing machines and skillz - please volunteer to recover these cushions for me. Right now, the fabric is just wrapped around the cushions and, as you can see, it looks kind of blah. Thanks.

It looks better in person, but here are the prints up close. I got them from Prinstagram a while back for super cheap. I've just been waiting for a place to put them.

A few other new additions:

Coffee beans for my makeup brush jar. Makes my room smell heavenly.

Douglas got this for me.

Homemade canvas artwork by yours truly. Idea from A Beautiful Mess.

I'm finally happy with how my room looks. I'm learning that less is more. Next step: a white comforter!

Ciao, bella.

It's the freakin' weekend, baby. I'm about to have me some pun.

2012-03-29T00:16:00.000-05:00

Hey, followers. All... six of you. (When should we expect our invitations to all of those cool blogger conferences?!)

This is Kylie... I feel like I should put that out there. I imagine some of you are under the impression that Kelly & I are actually the same person. Rest assured, we are separate people & I'm definitely the funnier of the duo.

If you're clueless about that title, please refer to this video (40 seconds in) -->

It's probably PG-13, so beware... After all, it is R. Kelly circa 2003; right around that urinating-on-an-underage-girl incident. I'm also not entirely sure of the language/innuendos because I was a flawless, straight-edge teenager when this song first launched........

Anyway, I tweeted "It's the freakin' weekend, baby. I'm about to have me some pun" as I was about to leave work on Saturday. A random comedian chose to "Favorite" the tweet so I felt famous for a second. The weekend is clearly over... even mine. Four glorious days, people. FOUR DAYS. I'm already depressed about the short three-day weekend coming up. Those of you who work five days a week need to reevaluate that decision.

I feel like this is where I reword Jay-Z by shouting, "If you work five days a week, I feel bad for you son. I got 99 problems but my schedule ain't one."

....I don't know where that came from. I was up early today. Blame it on the narcolepsy.

So... back to the purpose of thee blog- here are some things that happened over the weekend -->

Kelly & I planted flowers in window boxes attached to the front of our house. Let's keep our fingers crossed that they stay alive for more than a few weeks. We are 0 for 1 on horticulture after murdering a gorgeous plant at our previous apartment. We basically water-boarded the poor thing and then left it to dry/die in the desert sun.

We did some thrifting on Monday- I scored some t-shirts from Flying Worm, vintage (I think? I assume. I can't find them online) Nine West wedges from The Imaginarium in Benson, and books from Goodwill on 78th & Dodge

Side note: While at Goodwill, Kelly found a book titled "The ABCs of Choosing a Good Husband." Of course, we contemplated the purchase for a few minutes. While I was trying to gather some advice off the back cover, a middle-aged black man approached me and said, "I don't see a ring on your finger. How about we spend some time together and I'll read that to you?" I blushed.... Who knew it could be that easy? Wedding details soon. <3

I draw "Mariah" every chance I get. I think I'm improving. I wouldn't be surprised if she contacts me directly for a hand-drawn family portrait. Also, Nick Cannon has an abnormally long arm and it's not my fault.

Guys... I love this cabinet. It's at Imaginarium in Benson and I will give my first-born child to whoever gifts & delivers to me.

realized that Douglas is now a demon, so.... FREE CAT.

We expanded our coffee cup selection.

I attempted to reorganize my jewelry-making accessories and then realized I just need to MAKE more jewelry to cut down on hoarded items.

Who knew the plumbing department at Lowe's could have such pretty charms?

Clearly, these are very simple necklaces and it took no skill but... I think they may now actually be my three favorite pieces.

I almost tried free-handing the letters on this. I am now 110% certain I was not put on this Earth to make art. This derives from one of my favorite lines in a favorite song- "This warship is sinking and I still believe in anchors."

If you're curious about the song, it's called "Wooden Heart" by Listener (video below.) It is a top-5-forever-favorite & has helped to pull me through some tough times. (Sorry for getting serious for about five seconds. Just watch, listen, and proceed.) :)

I picked up this baby at Goodwill last week for $3. It had a plain, shiny varnish so I sanded that down & chose a bright red. I accidentally picked up glossy instead of matte, but it worked out just fine! I glued some fabric into the drawers to spice it up a little. It's like sexy, lace panties for jewelry storage.

And here she is, with a bunch of crap piled on top. I hope I never need to retrieve anything from that cedar chest. I have already forgotten what is stored inside and I'm far too lazy to remove everything in order to open and reveal its contents. I figured it will just be like Christmas when I move.

Why is it 12:15 am? Why am I not asleep? Why is tomorrow Thursday?

So much confusion. I'm out for the night. Maybe this novel of a post will make up for my blog-neglect lately?!

playing farm.

2012-03-22T20:48:00.001-05:00

I'm helping my cousin house sit at my uncle's farm that's miles away from what city people would call "civilization." This is where I grew up. Although I was never technically a "farm girl," the countryside is home to me. It's been kind of nice to get away from the city and surround myself with nature, limited cell service, and people who genuinely care when they ask how you're doing.

This is the first time I've opened my computer today and it feels liberating to have gone an entire day without it. Turns out there is life beyond the internet. I need to do this more often.

Today has been filled with farm choring, family hanging, dog chasing, dog bathing, more dog chasing, trampoline jumping, Gator riding, and sunset watching by a perfectly still pond.

Plus, there are like twenty cats here. Maybe being a country girl ain't that bad. (Minus the chores... and the dog.)

Now... time for the wine drinking portion of the night.

color blocking.

2012-03-21T13:46:00.001-05:00

Color blocking is a trend that resurfaced in 2011 which seems to be continuing into spring of 2012. There are many ways to play around with color blocking, but here are a few ways that I would rock the trend - both casual and dressy.

my birthday is coming up in 8 months...

2012-03-20T20:59:00.002-05:00

My birthday is coming up in 8 months. Because of this, I would like to give all of my dear friends some ideas... you know, in case you would like to buy me all things on my current wishlist. I'll have a new list soon, but you better hurry up and snag an item before the next friend!

I have no source for this other than Pinterest. It's made from an old trampoline and I wouldn't mind having it in my backyard, okay?

source: Glo Nightlight
I obviously don't have children, nor do I plan on having any for 10+ years, but I AM a 24-year-old woman who is ridiculously afraid of the dark. Who wouldn't want this awesome nightlight?

source: Koostik
These are beautiful and I'm sure they could produce more sound than my computer's wimpy system. I would love the Walnut + Cherry amplifier.

source: 1stdibs
I love furniture more than most things and I could probably live a long, happy life with these chairs alone (well, if a cat or dog sat atop one at all times.)

source: ModCloth
size 8.5, please. Thanks.

source: ModCloth
This dress, you guys. THIS DRESS. I can't stop loving.

source: Asos
It's a little pricey, but I always wanted to be a librarian and I feel this would make up for that long lost dream.

source: Bloom
The recently opened boutique & online shop are the work of my favorite fashion blogger. (Kendi Everyday) I wouldn't mind stopping by if I'm ever in Texas sometime, but I would probably be blogger-struck.

Oh my... how did that get on this list? I'm so embarrassed...

a day in the park.

2012-03-18T19:39:00.001-05:00

This weather? I forgive you for being a bitch two winters ago, Mother Nature. On a more pessimistic note, if it is this hot in March, I really hope we aren't dealing with 100+ degree weather come summer.

Kylie and I went to meet up with Maddie and Corrie at Memorial Park for outdoor activities such as: kite flying, frisbee tossing, blanket laying, bubble blowing, and eye squinting. Also, there was tea.

Happy Sunday!

day date.

2012-03-16T16:53:00.000-05:00

Maddie and I went on a day date today. We went hiking in the notoriously haunted Hummel Park and ended up meeting a nice man in a Superman costume. That was fun. It was a perfectly gloomy morning for a hike in a haunted park.

A little history on the park:

Hummel Park, which is said to be one of the most haunted places in Omaha, NE and rumored to be an ancient Native American burial ground, was once the site of a fur trading post run by Jean Pierre Cabanne in 1823. It was later named in tribute to J.B. Hummel, a long time superintendent of the Omaha Parks and Recreation Department.

The park has a very eerie feel to it. Spread over 200 acres, it is filled with steep hills and winding, dirt roads. An area at the eastern edge of the park is known as "Devil's Slide" because of the many suicides that have taken place there. Erosion has washed the area free from trees and resulted in steep cliffs and sharp drop-offs.

One of Hummel Park’s most mysterious characteristics is the trees that bow over the road entering the park. It is believed that many black men and women were hanged from these trees in the early 1900’s by local racist lynch mobs …and their souls still dangle from the trees. Park visitors claim to hear screams and cries coming from this park late at night.

Another of Hummel Park’s well known mysteries is the “Morphing Stairs,” a long, stone staircase located at the top of the park. These stairs are said to “morph” because nobody knows the exact number of stairs in the staircase. Each time a person counts the number going up or down, a different number is counted on the return trip.

The “Morphing Stairs” lead down a large hill into a valley containing a decrepit pit area with a deteriorating shelter house. Spray-painted markings in this area, such as inverted pentagrams and swastikas, along with the presence of dead animal carcasses, indicate that Hummel Park is a place where occult rituals and devil worship have taken place.

In addition to these satanic rituals, numerous murders have been committed in the park. One of these murders involved an Omaha prostitute named Laura LaPointe, who, in 1983, was sexually assaulted and then robbed of $25 by four other prostitutes. She was beaten to death with a 6 foot tree limb and a softball bat, and later discovered in a roadside ditch located in a heavily-wooded area of the park.

The screams and cries heard by park visitors, coupled with local ghost hunters’ claims of unexplained electro-magnetic readings and sightings of various ghostly apparitions, indicate a high level of paranormal activity at Hummel Park.

Saw this in North O, too. Best cat dinner in town.

Then we stumbled upon this little thrift store and had to stop.

It was a lovely day date!

Enjoy the weekend and this beautiful weather.

Last week I posted photos of the desk that I was in the process of sanding, painting, and repurposing into a vanity. I ended up lining the drawers with some fabric that I had leftover from a photo booth backdrop, which drastically improved their appearance. I also painted my large black mirror a light blue/grey color to freshen it up. I am pretty thrilled with how it turned out!

I'm also in the process of refinishing a night stand that I ruined trying to spray paint it a glossy yellow earlier this year. Can you guess what color I'm painting it this time around? (Hint: not glossy yellow) This was my first attempt at spray painting which taught me that I clearly cannot half ass the sanding.

It's hard to be cooped up in the garage inhaling paint fumes when the weather is this gorgeous. Nebraska has been setting record highs for this time of the year and I hope the weather continues in this fashion.

Cheers.

bloggers block.

Hey guys, Kylie here. I'm back. What a slacker I've been, right?! Have you missed me? Did we lose any loyal followers? (all four of you.) I don't understand how bloggers come up with posts every day. How do they do it? What are they on? Are they faking it? (98% of them are women, you know.) Someone give me a book of tips- preferably "Blogging for Idiots"

I actually haven't blogged because I've done nothing of value on the majority of my days off over the last two weeks. Oopsies. BUT THIS WEEK.... I painted a nightstand and rearranged my room. How exciting!

I have this really awkward and obnoxious fake window in my room. It was a real window at one time, but previous owners decided to put siding directly over the glass and never blocked the window off on the inside of the house. Thanks, assholes. Rather than removing the blinds that our landlord installed, I just try to camouflage the eyesore.

My grandma gave me this cedar chest and it's one of my favorite possessions.

I had an old canvas that had been ruined by my non-artistic attempts at painting. I wrapped some fabric around the frame, attached this owl postcard, and wrapped some twine. This was so much easier than painting.

I printed off some photos a couple of months ago and needed a way to display them. I picked up some wire and miniature clothespins the other day. Voila! I can't decide if it's too "Does she live in a dorm room? That's so ugly" or not. Feel free to tell me if you like, but keep your jerk comments to yourself if you don't.

My mom made me the most amazing jewelry hanger/organizer out of an old window. Isn't it incredible? Are you jealous?

ringz & thingz.

I picked this up at Joe's Collectibles for $10, I think?

And there she is, freshly painted, next to my newly positioned pallet bed. It barely fits but it works. (excuse me but... "that's what she said.")

This is where I would tell you the color I used, but I'm far too comfortable to retrieve the can from downstairs. It's a light gray/light blue and it's pretty. So, there you go.

I utilized one of my chalkboard trays to write notes for myself. My memory continues to fail more frequently with my age (24 going on 72, I'm pretty sure.) The tray will likely begin to collect junk but I promise not to post pictures of the mess it becomes.

Well, I head back to work tomorrow. Does anyone else slip into a depression when the hours before a work week are quickly dwindling away? Don't get me wrong- I like my job & I couldn't be more grateful for my employment but.... the weather has been too nice & I have so much television to catch up on with my bedroom window open. Major problem, guys.

seriously. so real.

I'm just waiting for HGTV or Lifetime to stumble upon this gem of a blog and whisk me & Kelly away to start filming (while restocking our entire wardrobes, of course.) I'm a realist, really.

Well, it's bedtime. And when I say "bedtime," I mean "I'm going to lay in bed until my eyes finally want to shut at 3 am- two & a half hours before my alarm." My sleep pattern has been a real twerp lately. Thank goodness for that narcolepsy diagnosis and narcolepsy medication to keep me awake during the day.

all white everything.

2012-03-09T20:39:00.000-06:00

We have royally sucked at blogging this week. Blame Kylie.

Remember when I put shutters on my wall? Yeah, well... I got bored with those after a few short weeks. Maybe it's the Gemini in me.

Onto the next thing...

WHITE SHELVES. WHITE EVERYTHING.

I saw a photo on Pinterest of white shelving with white accent pieces and fell in love. It looked so fresh and so clean. Outkast would have been proud. I had to recreate.

Hobby Lobby was having a 50% off sale on canvas and letters - so I grabbed a couple of things that I could spray paint white, including a "K" and a blank canvas to which I added my favorite Sylvia Plath quote.

Before the spray paint. White on white.

Sylvia canvas after the paint.

The "K" after the paint.

I found an Etsy shop that sells digital prints and since chevron seems to be my favorite pattern at the moment, I bought this pack and framed the yellow print for my shelves.

It's a work in progress, but this is what replaced the shutters:

My newly found passion for white doesn't end there. While at Joe's Collectibles in the Old Market the other day, I found a beauty of a desk that Joe was giving away for next to nothing. I had been looking for something just like it to paint and turn into a vanity for my room. Joe's is never not the answer.

I've been sanding and painting all day and will hopefully have pictures of the finished product by Monday. It's looking really good so far.

These are the before photos:

A formula for dynamite - added bonus that I didn't find until it was in my garage. There's also a devil carved into the backside of the desk. Awesome.

I'm also painting my huge mirror and a couple of other things which I will blog about next week. Try not to let the anticipation get to you.

Have a lovely weekend, all.

spring: browns, brights, and whites

2012-03-01T17:27:00.003-06:00

I'll be the first to admit that my closet could use a complete makeover. I've often dreamt of being submitted to "What Not to Wear" for the sole reason of spending $5,000 of someone else's money toward a new wardrobe. (Friends, this is your hint. Submit me.)

While I wait for Stacy and Clinton to show up at my door, I'll dream up the outfits I'd be buying if I had the money and the body to wear whatever I wanted. I'm obsessed with all things neutral, but since spring is just around the corner, it's fun to add in pops of bright colors to freshen up an outfit.

If you know me, you are probably aware of my love for baggy tops, skinny jeans, and nude/cognac colored shoes. These items are my daily go-to's. What are your wardrobe staples? Are there any trends you're looking forward to trying out this spring?

While you're busy dreaming up your own spring outfits, check out Polyvore for help putting ideas together.

If you aren't familiar with the world of Etsy by now, I recommend you get acquainted. I have more and more people suggesting I set up my own site for jewelry and things. I admire the ladies and gentlemen who keep up with the demand, but I'm afraid I'll slack off. I guess I could at least give it a shot? Not now, but soon.

Here are some of my latest Etsy favorites. Some are jewelry ideas I plan on recreating & others are items I would like to own (but I'm resisting the purchases.)

I'm not actually sure what I would use this backpack for, considering I don't tote books around all day... but it's adorable.

I was walking through Lowe's the other day and actually picked up a few items (from plumbing and electrical) that I could use for this necklace. Multi-purpose, for sure. by Stavri

I'm currently on the last hours of my four-day weekend. The twelve-hour shifts at my adult job allow for three or four days off each week. If you are ever offered this type of schedule, TAKE IT. Trust me. Yes, the shifts are long but the off days are well worth the adjustment period. (Plus, those overtime hours on each paycheck are a nice addition.)

Aside from viewing hundreds of Etsy pages, I have done nothing worth writing about this week. So... maybe next time. Back to lounging.

Essie - Let It Shine, Mochacino, Tart Deco

Please forgive the awful photos. Taking photos of your fingers without making them look like sausages is a difficult thing. I don't envy newly-engaged women. I'm going to have to put my fingers on a diet before I can ever say yes to a proposal. Same goes for the rest of my body if I ever want to get proposed to.

Anyway - new nails. I'm obsessed with the Essie nail polish collection. I love that they are affordable and easy to find. New colors show up every time I go to Walgreen's and I just can't help myself. I picked up some circle labels while at the grocery store the other day thinking they'd be perfect for this manicure I've been wanting to try.

I painted my nails using Mochacino last night and waited until today to ensure that they were dry enough that they wouldn't peel off if I applied the sticker. I applied the sticker to the lower half of my nail and painted a few coats of Tart Deco over the top half. I then removed the sticker and applied a couple of coats of Let It Shine to even out the two sections. These colors would also look super cute with Essie's Matte About You top coat.

Be sure to wait until the top half is dry before removing the sticker, because the polish will peel off. Due to my impatience, a few of my nails are ruined, and, due to my general laziness, will likely stay that way until the next time I decide to paint my nails.

The possibilities are endless, really. Have fun with it!

cake in a cup.

2012-02-22T15:53:00.002-06:00

That's right. Cake. In a cup. While out to supper the other night with my fam, my Aunt Penny informed the group of an amazing trick for making individual sized cakes in a matter of seconds. Best part: they are only 50 calories a piece. So, if you're on a 1,200 calorie/day diet, that means you can have 24 cakes EVERY DAY.

Thanks to Google, I managed to find the recipe to share with you all.

I went out to the store and bought cake mix and got right to it. I used confetti cake because it makes me feel like it's my birthday, but I think the final product would be delicious regardless of what kind of cake mix you use. I ended up using a Mason jar instead of a Ziploc bag for cuter storage purposes. (Always thinking.) I used a medium-sized mug that Kylie picked up from some thrift store. I've seen it go through the dishwasher plenty of times, so hopefully any kind of diseases from the previous owner are long gone. I microwaved the mix for one minute and it turned out perfectly!

I couldn't believe how moist (sorry for using that word, Brie) and delicious it was. I had some leftover frosting from making cupcakes for our housewarming party, so I threw some of that on there and it was quite the treat.

This would be a super quick and easy dessert to make for a get together of any sort.

Thanks, Aunt Penny!

Douglas really wanted to help make (ruin) these, so I had to distract her with an empty box. If only everyone were as easily entertained as Douglas and Kylie.
