We're an independent Australian barefoot shoe brand with a passionate community, a whole lotta heart and absolutely zero interest in doing things the boring way. And we figured it was about time we properly reintroduced ourselves.

FROM KITCHEN TABLE TO (SMALL BUT MIGHTY) GLOBAL BRAND 

PaperKrane has been growing since 2012, when a vision to create foot-friendly origami inspired baby & toddler booties that would do no harm to developing feet. On weekdays they were meticulously hand-sewn from the kitchen table and on weekends, they sold like crazy at handmade markets. Over time, a loyal and passionate community of customers grew — both in person and online — and what started as a solo operation steadily became something much bigger.

2016 was when things really shifted. PK partnered with an ethical factory in Vietnam, developed our now-iconic rubber sole, launched adult sizes, and started building a small international stockist network. Since then we've navigated growth spurts, supply chain chaos, a global pandemic (remember that?!), and everything in between.

But through all of it (and we mean all of it), the mission has never changed, we continue to create foot-friendly shoes that do no harm to feet...just with a lot more colour, a lot more soul, and a whole lot less kitchen table!

SO...WHAT MAKES PK... PK?

Here's the thing. We're not a big brand. We're not trying to be. We're a very small, proudly independent Australian shoe business, and that's exactly why every decision we make is intentional.

On materials, we're borderline obsessive. We choose eco-conscious materials where possible. We work with dead-stock leathers (beautiful hides that would otherwise go to waste), and we design our catalogues so the same materials run across collections so nothing gets squandered. Thoughtful design isn't a marketing line for us; it's genuinely just how we work.

On ethics, we don't cut corners. Our shoes are crafted by our factory in Vietnam, where we pay a living wage to every single worker. Not because we have to. Because there's simply no other way we'd want to do business. Full stop.

On design, we go big. Limited drops, bold colourways, and that signature rainbow sole that people spot from across a park and think yep, those are PKs. Once a design sells out, it's gone — and that's intentional too. Every drop deserves to feel special.

A speaker, a leader, and someone who's spent 14 years serving across two branches of the U.S. military, first as an enlisted Marine, then as a Naval Officer. He's also spent nearly three decades on stages helping nonprofits raise millions, mostly by making people laugh and then quietly emptying their wallets for a good cause.

Over the last eight years alone, he's walked more than 24,000 miles using the Charity Miles app, turning everyday steps into real-world impact for organizations like Team Red, White & Blue (which helps veterans find community) and No Kid Hungry. Steps became scholarships. Movement became meals. You get the idea.

CHAPTER 1: The OG Skittle Chelsea – Where It All Began

Let's rewind to where the rainbow magic really took off in the adult range. The OG Skittle Chelsea was the one that started it all – that beautiful, COLOURful rainbow sole that stopped people in their tracks. Bold blocks of colour stacked under a sleek black suede Chelsea silhouette. It was playful. It was rebellious. It was chef's kiss.

These weren't just boots; they were a statement. "Yes, I care about my foot health. No, that doesn't mean I have to be boring about it."

CHAPTER 2: The RAINBOW Experiments – Playing with Colour

Once we had that OG Skittle sole under our belts, we couldn't stop experimenting. The rainbow was out of the bottle (or box?), and we were having way too much fun to hold back.

Then came the Skits, sleek black leather uppers sitting confidently on that rainbow sole. It was our "dress it up, dress it down" moment – proof that rainbow soles could work for literally any occasion. Sophistication meets playfulness, and they got along famously.

But we weren't done yet. The PK Pops burst onto the scene with the confetti sole – because sometimes you want your rainbow with a side of party. Colourful specks scattered across the sole like happiness exploded underfoot. It was chaotic, it was fun, it was so PK.

All of these beauties were still rocking that original sole shape, but behind the scenes? We were already dreaming bigger, planning the next evolution. Little did anyone know, a whole new sole design was about to change everything.

CHAPTER 3: The Neon Skits Era – A New Sole, A New Vibe

Then came the game-changer: a completely redesigned sole shape. And what better way to launch it than with a fresh take on our rainbow obsession?

Enter the Neon RAINBOW  colourway – a neon take on our OG colourway, but still unmistakably rainbow. Wild neon vibes that felt like summer sunsets and festival energy bottled up under your feet.

We dropped it on two absolute bangers. First, the Neon Skittle Chelsea Boot – same beloved black suede upper, bright lime green ankle elastic on our brand NEW neon rainbow sole. Then came the Neon Lows, a fresh interpretation: white leather sneaker with that NEW neon rainbow sole and playful pops of colour through bright laces and colourful heel details.

People. Went. Wild. The neon rainbow hit different. It was where rebellion meets fashion – brighter in tone and bolder in attitude. This was the colourway that said "I'm authentically me, and I'm not dimming my shine for anyone." Be brighter. Be bolder. Be louder. In early June, I swapped my desk (and hoodie) for a week on-site at our Vietnamese factory, where the shoes you love are lovingly brought to life. This wasn’t my first trip over (must be closing in on 20 trips by now?!), but it was my first time working side-by-side with the incredible team who cut, sew, print, and shape every pair of PKs by hand - during PK production time.

And when I say team, I mean family. Literally.

THE FACTORY FAMILY:

Our main factory is a small, family-run operation. There’s mum, dad, and their two sons keeping things humming, along with around 20–30 staff who feel more like extended relatives than co-workers.

As always, they welcomed me like one of their own... fed me (a lot), laughed with me, and let me shadow every part of the process; from cutting uppers to stitching the details, screen printing, lasting, QC, and bagging up those fresh new kicks.

It’s a humbling thing, seeing the care and skill that goes into every pair. Every stitch, every sole, every lining - done by hand, by people who really care about what they’re creating.

A lot of you followed along on our Instagram stories during that week, and got to witness a bunch of PK BTS (behind the scenes). And I must say, I really enjoyed showing as much of the PK-making-process to you as possible.

I also spent time in two of our partner/supplier spaces - one whole day was focused on the vegan microfibre leather we use, and the other where the screen printing magic happens. Think bold colours, cheeky characters, and precision you’d never expect from a process that involves a giant rubber squeegee and hand mixed paint.

Watching our future styles come to life, layer by layer, was honestly so exciting… especially knowing what’s just around the corner 👀 (you’ll want to keep an eye out for rainbow soles, fun new boots, and a character named Jack Pickleson, again…)

Don’t worry! This is your go-to guide for how to clean barefoot shoes and keep your PaperKranes looking and feeling their best.

💦 Step One: Quick Clean for Everyday Dirt

Looking to freshen up your barefoot shoes between adventures?

Here’s how to do a simple spot clean:

• Use a damp cloth or soft brush (an old toothbrush works perfectly).
  
• Gently scrub any dirty areas on the fabric or sole.
• Wipe away soap with a clean damp cloth.
• Let your shoes air dry in the shade - no dryers, no direct heat.

Pro tip: Clingy messes (like playground mulch or sand) come off easier with a soft brush.

🧼 Step Two: Hand Washing Your Barefoot Sneakers

For deeper messes - think a little bit of mud, puddles, or mystery spills; your PaperKranes might need a gentle hand wash.

Here’s how to safely wash barefoot sneakers:

1. Remove laces and insoles (only if you have the black 5mm removable insoles) first.
2. Put some warm water and a little laundry soap in a bucket, and use either a soft brush, or cloth to gently wipe away any mess. (If you have thick mud, we suggest letting that dry and dry brushing it off first.) 
3. Gently wipe with a damp cloth to wipe away any soap residue.
4. Let them air dry naturally… avoid heat at all costs.

Note: Your PKs should never go in the washing machine, or be left in water to soak. You may compromise the glue around the sole, and wreck your shoes. Please for the love of PKs… stick to spot cleaning/hand washing.

☀️ Step Three: Drying Your Barefoot Shoes Properly

After washing, help your PaperKranes dry the right way:

• Stuff with scrunched-up paper or a towel to absorb moisture and maintain shape.
• Dry indoors or in a shaded, well-ventilated area.
• Avoid heaters, dryers, direct sunlight, and open flames (obviously).

Barefoot shoes are tough, but they’re not made for baking.

👣 Step Four: Keep Them Fresh & Comfy

Want to extend the life of your barefoot shoes? Show them a little love between wears:

• Rotate pairs so they can air out properly.
• Take out the removable insoles (if you have them!) if your feet get sweaty — let them dry separately.
• Sprinkle a little bicarb soda inside overnight if they start to smell funky. Shake it out in the morning and you’re good to go!

⚠️ Barefoot Shoe Care: What Not To Do

Here’s a quick list of no-gos when it comes to barefoot shoe care:

❌ No bleach or strong chemicals.

❌ No dryers or heaters.

❌ No machine washing. EVER!

❌ No skipping care altogether - regular cleaning and applying the right material protection = longer-lasting shoes!

But let’s be real, switching to barefoot shoes isn’t just about chucking your old shoes in the bin and running into the sunset. There’s a transition involved… and we’re here to make it smoother than sliding into a fresh pair of socks.

👣 Why Transitioning Matters

Your feet have probably spent years squished into narrow, structured shoes, with raised heels and arch support doing all the heavy lifting. Barefoot shoes ask your feet to do their own thing again - to spread out, to move, to feel. It’s like giving your feet their independence back. But just like any freedom movement, it takes a bit of time and adjustment.

Our Top Tips for an Easy Barefoot Transition:

1. Take it Slow (Tortoise Mode Activated)

Start by wearing your barefoot shoes for short periods each day. Think: walking the dog, school run, or that trip to the post office. Build up your time gradually so your muscles and tendons can wake up and stretch without feeling overwhelmed.

🚫 Don't: Go for a 10km hike on Day One.
✅ Do: Let your feet ease into their new groove.

2. Try a Bit of Cushioning (Yes, It’s Allowed!)

Did you know all our current adult styles come with a 5mm removable insole? It’s a perfect way to ease into barefoot life.

If you’re new to this world, leave the insole in for a little extra cushioning and support. Once you’re feeling more confident (and your feet have adjusted), just take it out and enjoy a thinner, more grounded experience. It’s like customising your own transition path - very cool.

3. Strengthen + Stretch

Your feet are full of little muscles that have been on holiday. Time to bring them back to work gently. Incorporate simple foot exercises, like toe spreads, calf raises, and picking up socks with your toes (surprisingly satisfying). Not only will your feet, but your calves, hips, and even your glutes will thank you too. It’s all connected!

4. Listen to Your Body

Some achiness? Totally normal. Pain? That’s a red flag. Listen in - if something doesn’t feel right, dial it back and give your body time to adjust.

5. Alternate Shoes if Needed

No shame in mixing it up! You can rotate between your barefoot shoes and your “before-freedom” shoes while your body adjusts. We’re all about progress, not perfection.

6. Start on Softer Ground

Grass, sand, carpet - soft surfaces are your feet’s besties when you’re just starting out. Hard concrete? Not so much, not just yet.

PK Tips for the Wetter Months

Want to keep your kicks looking fresh and fabulous all season long? A little shoe-care goes a long way:

• Waterproofing spray: Give your boots and mid-tops a protective spray before wear – it’ll help them handle light rain or the odd splashy puddle.
• Let them breathe: If they do get wet, stuff them with newspaper and let them air dry away from direct heat.
• Brush off the dirt: A soft brush or cloth can easily lift away mud or marks after your adventures.
• Store them smart: Keep your PKs in a dry, ventilated spot when not in use to help them last longer.

And just a heads-up – while some of our shoes are water-resistant, they’re not waterproof like gumboots (even with treatment). So please steer clear of full submersion, deep puddles, or super soggy conditions where water might soak through.

When it comes to what goes into our shoes, we’re picky on purpose.

We choose materials that align with our eco-conscious values—prioritising quality, durability, and low environmental impact.

For our leather lovers – We use premium cow leather and suede, often sourced from dead stock. That means leftover materials from other production runs that would otherwise go to waste. Instead of sending them to landfill, we give them new life—turning what was once discarded into colourful, comfortable kicks. It's one of the ways we minimise our footprint while still offering top-notch barefoot shoes.

For our vegan friends – Our synthetic materials are certified to the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) and Recycled Claim Standard (RCS). These certifications guarantee the recycled content in our vegan ranges and ensure that no harmful nasties (like PLAs or forever chemicals) sneak their way into our shoes.

Basically, if it’s not good for the Earth (or your feet), it doesn’t make the cut.

At PaperKrane, we’re all about going back to basics — natural movement, playful freedom, and shoes that let feet be feet. But we also love a good deep dive into the why. So today, we’re getting into the science behind barefoot shoes, and why they might just be the game-changer your feet have been waiting for.

First things first: What are barefoot shoes?

Barefoot (or minimalist) shoes are designed to mimic the natural shape and function of the foot. They’re flat (zero drop), flexible, and roomy in the toe box — all features that help your feet move the way they were literally built to move.

Imagine wearing a glove that’s too tight or too stiff — you’d lose dexterity, right? Same goes for your feet.

Your feet weren’t made for modern shoes 

Each foot is a biomechanical wonder — 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments, all working together to move you through the world.

Your feet are built to move, flex, grip, and balance. When they're locked into stiff, narrow, overly cushioned shoes, they lose strength and function — and that can lead to issues like poor posture, collapsed arches, and even pain in the knees, hips, and back. That’s where barefoot shoes come in — and why we stick to our Four F’s:

• Flexi – Our shoes bend, twist, and move with your feet — not against them. This flexibility allows for full range of motion and encourages muscle engagement.
• Flat – Zero drop from heel to toe keeps your posture aligned and your stride natural. It’s a small shift that makes a big difference for your joints.
• Feather Light – Clunky shoes? No thanks. Our styles are so light you might forget you’re even wearing them (but trust us, your feet will remember the comfort).
• Foot-shaped – Radical idea: shoes shaped like actual feet! With a wide toe box, our designs give your toes room to splay and grip, improving balance and stability.

But, what does Science say? 

Plenty, actually.

Studies show that wearing barefoot or minimalist shoes can increase foot strength, particularly in the intrinsic muscles (the ones inside your foot). One study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that just 8 weeks of walking in minimalist shoes had measurable strengthening effects, similar to doing targeted foot exercises!

And it’s not just about strong feet — improved proprioception (aka your body’s sense of its position in space) means better movement overall, which is great for everyone from toddlers taking their first steps to adults spending all day on their feet.

So, who are barefoot shoes for?

Honestly? Everyone.

Whether you’re a parent chasing kids around, a runner looking to reconnect with your stride, or someone who’s just tired of sore feet in stiff shoes — barefoot shoes are a gentle nudge back to natural.

The Golden Toe Awards is a new, annual celebration of minimalist shoes, makers, and the barefoot community.

The Golden Toe Awards were started by Adam from Minimal-List. 

As Minimal-List states - The awards allow us to discover the best, most highly recommended minimalist shoes as voted for by the worldwide community, helping guide newcomers and giving great companies a chance to shine, no matter how big they (or their marketing budgets) are!

Barefoot shoe wearers around the globe filled in surveys and gave feedback and voted for their faves...

Low and behold... We took out first place in the kids category!

This is hugely exciting for us, having started off exclusively as a footwear brand for kids. And while we won FIRST PLACE in the kids category, it's awesome to see more grown ups getting into them, too!
