The new Rifle Paper Co 2025 2026 planners are now in stock! The academic year 17 month planners run from August 2025 - December 2026 and are popular with people who like to get very organised and plan ahead. This year there are fewer designs, but still with the classic floral illustrations from Rifle Paper Co we love, but there is a new softcover format. The 12 month 2025 2026 academic year planner this year has stylish scalloped edges.

This year's designs are:

Rifle Paper Co 2026 Gracie softcover 17 month planner - this is a new format this year, a 17 month planner but with the same features as the softcover 12 month planners, with a weekly section for notes and a to do list checklist.

Rifle Paper Co 2026 Dahlia large format 17 month planner - their classic large format spiral planner with a hard cover, planner stickers and a gorgeous dahlia floral illustration.

I've recently stocked this super shiny gold washi tape but this works equally well with matte gold washi tape and plain kraft gift tags. These have added complementary ribbon in autumnal colours but you could adapt for any season of the year. They're very simple, I usually use a cutting matt to line up my pieces of tape before a craft but if you have a good eye for straight lines you're good to go!

A Christmas reading list

I am definitely someone who benefits from small goals and personal to-do lists. At this time of year most of my time, including weekends, is spent packing orders and acquiring bruises from tripping over mailbags, so it's good to have a reminder to stop and do something different. This year I thought I'd actually write down a winter bucket list (inspired by A Beautiful Mess, love their podcast) of Christmassy things to do at home.

I've started with a Christmas reading list and am hoping to read or re-read most of these this season. Some aren't strictly Christmas-themed but have a wintery and cold vibe, perfect for a cosy read beside a fire. Under my rules, dipping into these for a chapter or so still qualifies as done, time to tick! Tip no. 1 for any list, make it achievable and if possible write on there something you've already finished!

A Christmas reading list

- Each year my local Waterstones has a table filled to the brim of Christmas murder mysteries (my favourite genre), often old re-published books by authors who'd otherwise be out of print. I still haven't read last year's purchase (from that time when I spent most of Christmas alone but weirdly accomplished nothing.) Hopefully this year I'll finish a Mystery in White: A Christmas Crime Story by J. Jefferson Farjeon.

- A Christmas Railway Mystery by Edward Marston is part of a very easy-to-read detective series set in the 1800s. It's probably in the 'you'll never re-read' category, so I'd suggest looking in your local library - mine has the whole series. All the same I've forgotten what happened so I think I'll give it another go one Sunday afternoon.

- Snow, a poem by Louis MacNeice (from The Collected Poems of Louis MacNeice). I went to school with his great-niece, my first interaction with anyone 'famous', and my introduction to his work was not any more sophisticated than that. This was a teenager I went to gigs with in village halls around the country when we barely had our driving licenses, in cargo pants and DM boots and somehow the family connection came to light on one of those drives. Still, I like his poetry very much. (Also this travel book Letters from Iceland of correspondence between him and W.H. Auden.)

- The Snow Tourist by Charlie English - from a huge collection of similarly-themed travel books I acquired at a time when I thought I'd go to the Antarctic for a significant birthday. Spoiler: I didn't.

- Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild, which has more Christmas scenes than I remembered. I've already ticked this off by watching the wonderful BBC adaptation while writing this piece (under my rules, this qualifies). Reading this book as a child gave me one of my first experiences of London, and I've often thought of it fondly when near the Victoria and Albert Museum, in the area where it's set.

- The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, where it's always winter but never Christmas. I don't think I've ever read it the whole way through. I love C.S. Lewis (the last paragraph of The Last Battle, the last book in the Narnia series, is one of my favourite pieces of prose, full of hope) so a few chapters must be achievable!

- A Winter Book: Selected Stories by Tove Jansson (who wrote the Moomins, a recommendation from Ruth of Still September.)

- Night before Christmas by Robert Sabuda (I love a classic pop-up book.) I always thought I'd collect pop-up books as an adult (as well as snow globes.) So far I have one of each which I consider great progress. Small steps!

Have you any suggestions of wintery books (or maybe poems might be more achievable at this point!) I should add?

***

I love a tick-off list and playing with washi tape so I've written my list in my Moleskine bullet journal, decorated with holly washi tape stickers, planner stickers, and Christmas washi tape.

Why should I buy a Rifle Paper Co planner?

This year's Rifle Paper Co 2021 2022 planners are now in stock. These 17-month diaries are a perennial favourite, these are some of the reasons I think they're a great option if you are a lover of writing things down in a physical planner.

1. Painterly florals

Anna Bond's gouache paintings of florals are her signature style - and this year all the planner covers are floral (in previous years they've had at least one non-floral design), so these are obviously the customers' favourites too! The strong floral designs make the prettiest covers, and complement lots of the other stationery in their range.

2. Inspirational quotes

Each week has an inspirational quote to motivate you for the week ahead. I love turning the page to see what that week's quote is, from a selection of leaders, game-changers, authors and poets. We all need that little boost of encouragement!

3. Lies flat

It seems obvious, but last year I discontinued a line of planners because they didn't easily lie flat when open. Even the Rifle Paper Co planners with a covered spine lie perfectly flat, because the spine conceals spiral-binding (which you can see in the photos above.)

4. Pretty pockets

One of my favourite features are the pretty pockets for stashing receipts, tickets, and keepsake letters. I love their bright floral designs (and the dove poking out of the dovecote planner). As we come out of lockdown here in the UK, I've booked a few tickets for events later in the year (hello, Buckingham Palace gardens!) and they're all stashed here, ready to go and easy to find.

5. Fun planner stickers!

Each planner has pages of fun planner stickers for marking those special and also those ordinary days! Look carefully and you'll spot our favourites, including pretzel and book stickers, and the avocado face masks to mark a spa day! And as a bonus - extra planner stickers are available to buy if you run out. There are quite a lot of stickers though (130) so sometimes I use the spares to decorate envelopes of special birthday cards etc.

What are this year's Rifle Paper Co 2021 2022 planners?

Their planner range for this year includes their classic large and medium-sized planners pictured above, which run from August 2021 to December 2022. They've streamlined the number of styles, so they are available in only the following 4 designs:

- Rifle Paper Co 2022 Marguerite large 17 month planner

And also a new academic year format, a stream-lined planner with floral monthly pages and extra pages of notes at the end.

- Rifle Paper Co 2022 Academic year Luxembourg planner

As lockdown ceases in the UK, we're looking forward to seeing friends and families, group activities and trips further than our local area.

Here are some cards to send to those you're hoping to see soon:

- For a trip to an art gallery

Letterpress cards in the UK

I love letterpress cards! When I first started this business, over 10 years ago, letterpress cards were a big thing in the US, but the trend hadn't yet made it over to the UK. I wanted to stock these beautiful, tactile cards and at first I stocked lots of independent brands from US designers.

Now I stock Egg Press and Rifle Paper Co letterpress cards, both of which are still US brands, but are printed in the UK on a 1962 Heidelberg Windmill Platen press.

What is letterpress printing?

Letterpress printing is a method of relief printing. Using a printing press, usually vintage presses due to the hand-printed and old-fashioned nature of the process, a raised design creates an impression on soft cotton paper. The cards are usually high-quality due to the premium quality of the paper required, with the added care of independent designers who still love this hand-printed method.

Check out my range of letterpress cards here.

This month, Papermash turned 10 years old! I've been reflecting on what's happened over the last decade, what's worked and what hasn't. For the most part, many things I wrote in this 5 year blog post are still true, but here's the story of my journey so far.

2009 – In 2009 I launched Papermash, through my Tea for Joy blog (RIP.) I sourced almost of my initial stock through avid reading of interiors blogs I had discovered during a three-month stay in New York. This opened up a whole new design world to me. I'd like to say the business idea was really well thought through, but really I'd just seen some nice things you couldn't get in the UK, and stationery was a low-cost financial investment.

In those days Oh Joy had her own product range, before she switched to licensing deals with companies like Walmart, and I also loved some simple letterpress from Simplesong design, before she closed that business down and rebranded. Letterpress stationery was a completely new concept to me and didn't really exist in the UK - and was what I mostly sold in that first year (including tooth fairy kits and wine gift tags) and some beautiful Korean tape whose brand I wish I remembered as they had pretty designs in great quality! That year I also had a mention in Daily Candy, a daily lifestyle email, which was the biggest press impact I’ve ever had, with £1000 of sales in a few hours (that’s a lot for a stationery shop with only a small range.) When the internet was less saturated and there were fewer online shops, mentions definitely had more impact. Daily Candy closed down a few years ago.

2010 – I continued to discover new products and designers via design blogs, including what was very unique at the time; striped bakers twine and striped paper straws, which I specifically remember spotting on the Creature Comforts blog. Who knew they were so tricky to find? I was one of the first people in the UK to stock them and used to sell them every single day. This instilled in me the power of SEO – I ranked first on Google for them and I couldn’t keep them in stock. In more recent years, I dropped the ranking (still on the first page) and I almost never sold any, even with the upsurge in interest around sustainability (the straws were biodegradable.) I just donated the remaining stock to a local community café as I decided not to continue with them and just wanted to clear the space!

I also discovered something very unusual in 2010, again on Creature Comforts – washi tape, which was made from Japanese rice paper. I was one of the first people to stock it in the UK, and still now I recommend the quality of the original Japanese brands such as MT tape, rather than other brands who've tried to jump on the bandwagon. It might sound obvious but MT tape just sticks really well!

In 2010, through the same blogs, I discovered a new brand called Rifle Paper Co whose range was full-colour printed, even though the on-trend stationery of the moment was letterpress. Their style has been much imitated and it’s been interesting to watch their product lines diversify. They only sold cards and prints in those days but obviously realised this is isn’t the key to a multi-million dollar business! I had their heart print featured in Elle Decoration which was a real introduction of the brand to the UK.

My friends and I often discuss the early glory days of blogging - this is before 'influencer' was even a word (and it's a word I hate) - when a mention on a big American interiors blog would guarantee lots of traffic and sales. Papermash had some coverage on big US websites such as Apartment Therapy, A Cup of Jo, and Design Sponge. Most of my favourite blogs have closed down and I haven't seen their talent for styling and curation replicated.

2011 – I stocked lots of quirky Korean stationery from Katy and June – these were still some of my favourite product ranges. Katy and June were two young Korean girls importing stationery to their garage – I was really sorry when they closed down a few years later, as they were really efficient to work with.

2013 – I have always loved the idea of celebration, so I extended the range mainly because I came across some very stylish party goods from a French brand as well as some Liberty print ranges from Meri Meri. This was a pink party shoot I commissioned Charlotte Love to do – I still think these are great shots. I mostly discontinued party goods in 2017 (we still have a small range of garlands and small decorative items) because it was hard to make it profitable – there’s a limit to how much people are willing to spend on paper cups and plates and they always had to be posted in large paper boxes – boxes are not free, despite people loving to complain about postage and packaging, and lots of my suppliers were selling directly from their own websites so there wasn’t much advantage to selling it on my website.

2014 – Rifle Paper Co expanded their range to sell calendars, starting with just a couple of styles, but they obviously realised they were on to a good thing as in the next few years they expanded the number of designs significantly, to include planners, appointment calendars, and desk calendars, which I love stocking each year. I've always loved interiors, and (in theory) being very organised - so the idea of making your workspace pretty with a planner or calendar fits in well with my ethos.

My friend Sian says she thinks I started my business so I could be creative - and I’ve always enjoyed styling photo shoots, so I've tried to do this as much as possible. I've lost the impetus for this a bit but hope to step this up in 2020. In reality, I'm quite last minute so if I've given you a gift it might well have been wrapped in two minutes in a pretty paper bag - but I do love a gift wrapping shoot! You can see some of my gift wrapping ideas here. As an homage to my love of gift wrap I always make sure I stock a good range of washi tape.

Over the years, I've put myself out there by hosting a few crafternoons and workshops (the last in 2016!) and organising Blognic (a picnic for bloggers) every few years. I like networking and have made some great contacts and friends this way.

Events are a lot of work though and my favourite task is analysing information behind the scenes! You’ll often see me working on a spreadsheet when I should be working on my social media feed. I’ve never been too bothered about the changes platforms like Instagram have made – I’ve always thought Facebook is a business and so they are in the business of making themselves money, not me – so I’m working on making my website as user-friendly and accessible in its own right - and stocking the most profitable items. In the last few years, I have not diversified the product range as much as I'd have liked, but have worked on the user experience, with a new website 3 years ago, and focusing on selling items people are searching for. I'm not sure how a business can succeed without good search engine rankings.

In 2020, Papermash will be launching its own range of stationery, which has been in the works for many years, but restricted by time and working capital. I've always loved supporting independent designers and artists and we did collaborate with a few illustrators to design our own prints in the early years. Those particular experiences weren't an issue but sometimes I've found creative people are not quite as organised as I'd like and I don't always have the patience. I have some illustrators lined up to work with and if you've got any suggestions of new illustrators who you think would fit with my brand (and who understand the concept of a brief and a deadline!), I'd love to hear about them.

Being self-employed and running a small business is very challenging. Over the last few years there has been increasing competition on all websites, with some shops clearly running loss-leader campaigns which I can’t afford or don't want to do - for example, postage is not free. Some of my suppliers and ex-suppliers run quite aggressive marketing campaigns to lure people to their own websites which I understand but find frustrating. Other competitors have huge marketing budgets I could never rustle up (and it's very easy to waste a lot on marketing without a guaranteed return) - and since anyone can open an online shop at a low set-up cost these days, everything has become more difficult – achieving press, a Google presence, any kind of USP. Since washi tape, straws and bakers twine have become ubiqitous - you can find all those things on Ebay - it has been harder to stand out. There are other challenges too, like the US exchange rate and more people using digital diaries.

I have been lucky to have pre-existing relationships and lots of lovely repeat customers. I had some inside information about the sales of another new-ish stationer with a large marketing budget (I mean hundreds of thousands) and I know the potential for selling stationery is still huge!

I have been lucky that I do have some part-time help with Papermash and also I wouldn't have gotten this far without the help and advice of my friends Sian of Sian Zeng wallpapers, and Margarita of Chocolate Creative. Having good friends in a similar industry and selling on the same platforms has been invaluable. Even though our product ranges are very different, we've all been in business around the same amount of time and noticed similar changes in e-commerce. Even though Marga has now relocated to Gran Canaria, I still Facetime her often to discuss our favourite topic of SEO!

If you have purchased from Papermash over the years, thank you! As a mostly one-person operation, I see every order come in. I recognise all the names of my repeat customers and very much appreciate their custom, and those who take the time to leave reviews.

Will Papermash still be here in 10 years time? Who knows. For me it's very much tied in with having a flexible lifestyle (I'm writing this blog post in a coffee shop at 7am) but with that comes its own stress and limitations. I moved house to reduce my outgoings. Last year I took a part-time job in a think tank which has been fun in terms of getting dressed and out of the house and stretching my brain in a different way - oh, and having a pension.

I like having my own business but I'm not quite sure I'd say I'm living the dream. But am I happy with my lot? Yes.

10 reasons to send a card today

Real, hold-it-in-your-hand, smell-the-paper post may be in decline, but we still all love to receive a tangible card. Or letter. No matter how rare they’ve become. A colourful, hand-addressed envelope landing on your doormat will always deliver more of a thrill than its email equivalent, especially when glinting in pink or green from within a pile of dull, white bills. So, why not take the occasion of no occasion in particular, and make up a reason to send a card to someone who would appreciate it? Here are ten - deliciously random - reasons to send a card today...just to get you started.

1. Your friend finally passed her driving test on the eighth attempt, so you want to congratulate her on it only taking a decade...and call shotgun for the first seaside road trip.

{Rifle Paper Co you rock card}

2. It’s popped up in your Facebook feed that an old flame has just got engaged, and you think that if Chelsy Davy can turn up at the royal wedding to witness Harry marry Meghan, then you can be the bigger person and send your best wishes to the happy couple. It may be through gritted teeth, but you can’t read tone in a card anyway.

{Rifle Paper Co love is in the air card}

3. Through the hometown grapevine you’ve discovered that your favourite childhood teacher is about to retire, so you want to carpe diem your chance to let Mrs Haggarty know what an enormous impact she had on your young life. And not just for introducing you to Judy Blume.

{Rifle Paper Co You're the bees knees card}

4. Your sister’s dumped that rubbish bloke from Tinder who kept accidentally calling her by the wrong name. And turning up an hour late to every date. You decide a card will let her know that you, most assuredly, approve of her decision. There are many more fish in the proverbial sea, and none of them as annoying as Danny.

5. Now your friends are having babies, you have a burning desire to let your mum know how much you appreciate her, realising what she actually endured to bring you onto the planet. And raise you into the fabulous, card-sending individual you’ve become.

{Rifle Paper Co super mom card}

6. You feel that it’s your duty, as their most loyal and ardent customer, to thank your local pizzeria for making every Friday night a great one. And to remind them, since it’s been nearly a week since you last mentioned it, to pretty please never take that caramelised onion and gorgonzola number off the menu.

7. You want to thank your favourite hairdresser for always keeping you looking the right side of sassy, and for understanding that whenever you say “just an inch off please”, you really mean JUST AN INCH.

8. It’s always good to let your granny know you’re thinking of her. And that you love her timeless style. You wore the vintage earrings she gave you to a party and got five compliments.

9. Your cousin completed his Duke of Edinburgh gold and you’re - frankly - bloody impressed. You only managed to get as far as the bronze level. And failed that.

10. Your teacher friend has caught nits from her class (for the third time this academic year), and you want to encourage her to keep on keeping on. The temporary scalp-residents may be bugging her, but she’s shaping the young minds of the future. And there’ll be a truck-load of wine and chocolates come the end of term.

Here I’m sharing a few easy ways to remember the difference, as well as the story of my own London stationery shop.

Stationery vs. stationary

(Note: you can find Rifle Paper Co floral notebooks similar to the above here.)

STATIONERY definition: office supplies and writing equipment.

To spell it correctly every time, remember this:

ERASER – E is for Eraser and stationery. Think of your favourite childhood stationery essentials (did anyone else have a collection of scented rubbers?) and you’ll remember that stationery, the type you can fit in your pencil case, should be spelled with an E.

PAPER – alternatively you might want to visualise that pretty writing paper you keep for special occasions, or quirky greetings cards you've stocked up on and remember that paper and stationery are spelled the same!

It seems that there are a plethora of things stationery to help you out here - you can also remember that LETTERS, written on your favourite stationery, also have an er.

There are no excuses for getting it wrong, right?

STATIONARY definition: not moving.

I’ve been trying to think of a suitable acronym or illustration for this one though for some reason the only things which come to mind are marching commands such as “About turn” and “At ease” even though both include being on the move….so I’d stick with remembering PapER = StationERy. StAnding still (bit tenuous) is the other! If you have something better to suggest please let me know!

Why did you open a stationery shop?

I go to a lot of networking events and I get asked this often, so I’m used to recalling some of the details (you’ll be glad to know I’ll give you the much abbreviated version in person!) But if you’re interested, here’s a little bit more of my not particularly strategic back story…

Although I worked as an accountant previously (which I loved) I wanted to do my own thing as I was bored of working long hours and just wanted more flexibility. I couldn’t easily make evening commitments for most of my twenties and I still warn young graduates about the 'dark years'. I tried in more than one job to reduce my hours to a four day week so I could pursue other interests and it was always a no go. I didn’t resent that but I started to look around at other options. I was never going to be a Finance Director but I loved the projections and I’m also an ideas person so I thought that would be a good combination for running my own business. I’d had many entrepreneurial ideas and money-making schemes as a child so it felt like a natural progression. Back in the day I did a Masters in Museum Studies and although that might not seem particularly relevant I did have some skill in curating a collection and pulling together relevant information. Accountancy used those skills too though!

Originally I wanted to set up a fashion label mainly because I’d had a specific idea (despite having no fashion background or contacts), so I took a brilliant short course on setting up your own fashion label at London College of Fashion. Although the course was excellent, it seemed like the barriers to entry were very high – high costs of fashion shows, for example. I wanted my brand to use fair trade and organic cotton, which at the time was incredibly difficult to source, and as I had no fashion network and needed to start small it was very difficult to find a manufacturer. I didn’t have much savings or anyone to support me with paying my domestic bills so I parked that idea! I recently met Charlotte from Know The Origin – a great ethical brand - who was a student at LCF and backpacked round India for months visiting factories and doing research for her dissertation on sustainable design. She is tenacious and determined and hugely passionate about a transparent supply chain - these are the people who can and deserve to make these things happen!

I would say that although I didn’t have the drive, contacts or money to launch a fashion brand, I did work for a while in a co-working space with businesses who have set up successful sunglasses (think Meghan Markle), sock and shirt brands – none of whom had a design background. I am full of admiration for them and how they pulled it off. Similarly, two friends are (separately) launching their own range of watches later this year. When they’re flying off to Basel and Hong Kong for meetings I’m hugely impressed. Any idea where you find a watch designer? Me neither. I've still not seen my original idea replicated but I still have no idea how I'd even start!

Of course there are huge risks and costs involved (fashion PR for example is super expensive), as well as the difficulty of seasonality - but I think there’s a much bigger slice of the population who’ll rush out and buy sunglasses because they’ve seen them in a magazine, on a celebrity, or on Instagram, rather than a notebook! I have at least 4 pairs of shoes I bought on a whim because I saw them on Instagram. If you are a person who’d make a rash purchase of stationery after seeing it online, I think we need to become acquainted! The higher price points and greater margin on manufacturing your own products make these fashion brands a potentially much more lucrative business.

Anyway I abandoned that idea, but I still wanted to set up my own business. Not long afterwards, in 2008, I took a career break and spent 3 months living the dream in New York’s West Village. I wanted to experience New York living like a local, so I spent a lot of time pretending to be working on my laptop in various coffee shops. This time was my first introduction to American design blogs such as Design is Mine, Design Sponge, and Oh Joy. My favourite was Creature Comforts, and through Ez’s curation I discovered many now ubiquitous items such as striped paper straws (hard to imagine those were once a NEW.BIG.THING), washi tape, letterpress stationery, and not that long afterwards – a new Florida-based stationery brand, Rifle Paper Co. I hadn’t seen any of these items I loved in the UK. This was a time when I really discovered the talents of independent designers (Etsy was also new to me) and so I decided to set up a stationery shop, mainly to bring many of these US brands and trends to the UK.

At the time there weren’t many online shops, and the only other stationery shop I knew of had a well-deserved niche so I didn’t even think of them as competition. I did very little other research, spent £2,500 on a website and on my first stock; American letterpress stationery, cute Korean stationery and metallic notebooks from Oh Joy. While I had been living in New York, I had started a UK-based design blog, Tea for Joy, which had a good readership because there weren’t many similar blogs at the time. So about a year after my sabbatical, I launched my shop, promoted it through my blog, and off I went!

Would you like to have a stationary shop?

The only type of stationary shop is a bricks-and-mortar shop (in that it is not on the move) and whether this is something I'm considering is also a question I’m asked often. The easy answer to that is NO! You won’t find Papermash on your local high street any time soon, and here's a few reasons why:

PERSONALITY

I went to a marketing talk a while ago which mentioned that the type of marketing activities you enjoy as a business owner depend on your personality. Extroverts like sponsorships, pop-up shops, fairs and workshops whereas introverts are more comfortable with online marketing, blogging, Google Adwords etc. As a definite introvert, I’ve no problem saying I’m more comfortable with the latter – I’d rather work behind the screen. I’ve had many shop jobs in my life so I could do it but given the choice, I’d rather invest my time in online activities and strategies. I can be quite sociable and enjoy networking. But standing in a shop all day? Not for me, not for now.

FINANCES

If I don’t want to play shopkeeper all the livelong day, then I’d have to pay someone else to do it – that, combined with rent, rates and overheads – and the commitment of a lease - means there is quite a lot of financial risk involved. Of course, I wouldn't take on a shop without projecting that additional sales would cover the extra costs - but really, who knows, and for how long? A local independent gift shop recently went out of business, I think partly because a well-known stationery chain with great lines opened right across the street. The footfall in my local Cafe Nero has massively decreased since a massive Costa with a shiny shopfit opened directly opposite.

There’s a small chance that someday if I find a studio (which I already cover the cost of) with a shop front for not a huge incremental cost I might look into it - but the cost of London’s commercial property makes that unlikely to be in London.

Of course having a shop can work, for some businesses, even those with low price-point items. Near to where I live there is a busy card shop with a great selection of stock. I’ve spoken to the owner who told me that they sell 1,000 cards per day (1000!) and that the rent isn’t too expensive because it’s one of those tiny spaces which couldn’t have too many other retail uses. Even a larger shop space can help cover its overheads and raise its profile by running in-store workshops.

When I go to trade fairs such as Top Drawer I always see lots of lovely cards from designers I’d like to support but won’t stock online because I don’t think that many people (including myself) go online to buy cards, so curating a physical shop collection would be something I’d enjoy. There are some lovely things in my shop that I think would sell much better in real life!

However, at this point (after nearly 10 years in business) – if in the unlikely scenario I find myself with money in the bank and nothing to do with it – I’m much more likely to invest in another business than expand into a bricks and mortar shop. I might just fancy diversifying, because doesn't that make life more interesting, and I think a lot of e-commerce skills and experience is transferable. Haven’t you known design-based businesses which have closed down just because they’ve gotten a bit bored of doing the same thing? I know one person who’s retraining in healthcare. Another friend took a full-time job because she wants to get a mortgage – to her surprise she’s loved how a regular paycheque has eliminated a lot of stress and this has allowed her to be more creative in her freelance work at weekends. I still have lots of ideas for Papermash but expanding (at a great cost) to do more of the same is probably not a direction I want to go in.

I’m part of an entrepreneur’s network with regular fundraising pitching events. I find them a bit frustrating because there is so much emphasis on raising hundreds of thousands of pounds, as if this is the holy grail or an indicator of having a successful business. If you've big expansion plans which require a lot of funds, are happy to give away a share of your business, or sell the business in a few years - because the venture capitalist will make you - then of course that's the way to go. But there's a lack of acknowledgement that for some people, staying small, paying yourself enough of a salary and paying your taxes is still a happy and honourable way to live your life!

Nevertheless, some of the businesses their founders are pitching for are inspiring, in areas I would never have thought of - lots are a better idea than mine, some have great potential and some are already performing well in their first year of trading.

Unless you produce your own lines (I'm not ruling that out), the margins on retail are not great, especially when competitors (including Amazon and Ebay) are selling the same low-value items. My friend who’s launching a mid-price watch brand also sells second hand watches on Ebay and sometimes makes more profit in one sale than I might make in a week! Why not find something with a better return on investment?

FLEXIBILITY

While I work hard with my little team and definitely work full-time hours – the main reason I don’t want to have a shop is that I love the ability to work flexibly. It’s why I set up my business in the first place. It was the major trade-off for giving up a career I actually enjoyed, with talented colleagues and challenging work. Usually I have the opportunity to work back in my professional job for a few weeks a year and I’d rather do that to make some extra money than be restricted to standing in a shop at weekends. I go away for long weekends quite often but don’t mind working evenings and other weekends to catch up. I often exercise during the day and have some voluntary commitments which all happen in daytime hours.

Recently I’ve even been thinking of finding a part-time job a few days a week in a completely different area to keep things fresh. I do miss getting dressed up for work and think it might be good to have some routine. Of course you could say I’d find the same routine and could smarten up my appearance if I opened a shop but I’d like to use my brain in a different way. I’m interested in lots of different things apart from design and a lot of shopkeeping is repetitive admin. I do believe that it’s hard to expand a business unless you are working on it full-time but working just a few days a week would allow me to outsource more jobs so that I could concentrate on shop tasks I enjoy most (that’s styling not shopkeeping!) The freelancers I already work with are reliable but most are still establishing their careers and I like to encourage them on their journey too and to give them work if I can.

I’d love to know what you think:

Have you taken a big risk to expand your business which has paid off?

Have you stayed small by choice and are happy with it?

Have you given up self-employment or closed down a product-based brand and are happier (or not) for it?

Or anything else you’d like to add or you'd like to see discussed in a future blog article!

Galentine's Day Ideas

Forget Valentine's Day. Forget checking your door mat, expectantly, and finding nothing but a flyer about local road works. Forget checking your Whatsapp and finding nothing but a photo of your second cousin's baby's first tooth. And forget checking your desk at work and finding nothing but half-eaten Pret sandwich. Valentine's Day seems geared to disappoint. Many of us have never received a card from that elusive 'secret admirer' we're taught to expect. No matter how many times we checked the door mat.

So, forget Valentine's Day. Enter: Galentine's Day. A day on which to acknowledge our not-so-secret admirers: the school friends, uni mates, and ran-a-5k-in-yer-bras-together-once girls who've had our backs for years.

So, to help celebrate, here are nine Galentine's Day ideas for fun things to do across the UK, so your girl gang can make this February one to remember. Remember to check each date as some of these activities are during the week of Galentine's Day, rather than the night itself.

What is Galentine's Day?

Originally devised by Parks and Recreation's Leslie Knope in a 2010 episode of the show, Galentine's Day has grown in popularity - beyond just fans of the US comedy series - and is now a recognised holiday in its own right. A day ahead of Valentine's Day - on 13th February - Galentine's Day is a chance to surround yourself with gal pals and be reminded that blokes may come and go, but female friendships endure through decades of wardrobe-swapping, phone calls, kickass dance floor routines and up-all-night, let's-do-this-together, round-the-kitchen-table, life-planning. Ladies celebrating ladies, women supporting women...what's not to love?

How can you celebrate Galentine's Day?

1. Throw a pancake party

This year Galentine's Day falls on Shrove Tuesday, aligning the planets for the perfect night: pals and pancakes. If you want to play host, get the flour/eggs/milk in bulk and then ask each guest to bring a different topping. If you're feeling particularly friendship-loved-up, decorate pancakes with words to describe each other. 'Brave' for the one in your posse who's battled something major this year, 'Creative' for the one who's launched her own Etsy shop, 'Boss' for the one who beat everyone else to that incredible promotion. A chance to tell your girlfriends how much you admire them...in sprinkles.

2. What would Beyoncé do?

Been ghosted on Tinder? Had it up to here [gestures to forehead] with Happn? Why not channel that energy into perfecting your booty shake, and take your frustrations out on a gym floor. The Saturday before G-Day, Move Your Frame has a Beyoncé 'Drunk in Love' dance workshop where you and your Single Ladies can get down and dirty.

Where? Frame at Kings Cross, London

When? 10th February 2018

Find out more

3. Save water, drink champagne

When you stop and think about it, all the best words begin with 'ch': chocolate, champagne, Cheddar cheese. Choreograph a Galentine's night soiree with your chosen chums where everything begin with 'ch'. Make the dress code 'chic or cheap'. Crank up 'Karma Chameleon' and 'Chandelier' on Spotify repeat. Play charades. Collect money for your favourite women's charities. Be cheerleaders, championing what you cherish about each other and sharing what you see in the next chapter of your friendship. And, if that all sounds like too much work, chuckle at Chandler's best bits on Netflix, dunk churros in hot chocolate sauce, and keep the Chardonnay flowing. Cheers!

4. Feminist book club

Read a selected female-centric book in advance and then come together to swap opinions, throwing in a few bottles of wine to help keep the ideas flowing. Titles could include Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, Caitlin Moran's How to Be a Woman or Rebecca Solnit's Men Explain Things to Me. But top of the reading list has to be Galentine's Day inventor Amy Poehler's own Yes Please. Joining forces with your friends all night on how to smash the patriarchy? Yes please.

5. Can't sing, will sing

In a building that used to be a grotty strip club, Vauxhall's delightful Tea House Theatre is now home to over 40 teas from around the world and a mouthwatering array of cakes. Fortnightly, they host a Tuneless Choir "for those who've been told they can’t sing in tune but LOVE to do it anyway!", meaning you could spend an evening having a warble with your girls, then catching up over lemon drizzle and Darjeeling.

Where? Tea House Theatre, London

When? 14th February 2018

Find out more

6. Female film festival

Get your girl gang together, pop the corn, pop the corks and settle down for a night of your best-loved movies. Nominate each person to choose their favourite film and make a marathon of it; maximum points if you all get into pyjamas and face masks. Even more points if you match the film to the snacks: Mystic Pizza and a quattro formaggi, Chocolat and a giant box of Milk Tray, Mean Girls and sticks of butter (it's not a carb). Or, if you'd rather go out than stay in, here's a little round-up of some of the best Galentine's Day screenings across the UK...

How to make an envelope

As the youngest members of my family grow older, I've increasingly given them cash or gift vouchers as a gift. I like to add a personalised touch to the impersonal gift, so I often make an envelope to send the gift in. They're so simple but still stretch my creative muscles a little as I mix and match the materials. Here's a very simple how-to.

1. Collect your materials

You can use many combinations and materials to make an envelope, but I usually have the below items on hand:

Wooden envelope template

This wooden envelope template can be reused many times and works perfectly with A4 sheets of paper. You might be able to get different shapes elsewhere, and you can certainly download free paper templates, but you'll get a better outline if you're tracing round a solid template. Children love using these too, and they are a little easier for them to use than paper templates. The benefit of the wooden or plastic templates is that you can trace through the lines below which makes it a little easier to fold neat edges.

A selection of papers

Magazine pages

There are so many beautiful magazines out there now, that it's easy to tear out the pages and keep them on hand for their next craft use! Some magazines even including wrapping paper or pretty papers for you to use. I don't keep back issues of magazines for long but before I recycle them I do scour the pages and cut out the prettiest pages. I hang them on a large wire clip in my office so I'm reminded to use them for wrapping small parcels or using in other paper crafts.

Some of my favourite magazines to use include:

- Freckle (beautiful scenic images of Ireland, printed on a lovely matte paper)

- The Plant (my favourite plant magazine with photography and illustrations of gorgeous foliage and botanical landscapes.)

- Cereal magazine (ethereal travel images.)

Vintage ephemera

I love to buy this at car boot sales. My most recent haul from the Chiswick car boot sale (a good place to find this kind of thing) included French comics, vintage sheet music, and ledger paper.

Sketchpad paper

If you're artistic enough to paint or draw on the envelope, I recommend you use a standard sketch pad - I use watercolour paper for almost everything else but a thinner paper works better here as you need to make firm creases on the edges. One of my favourite snail mail inspirations is Naomi Bulger - you can follow her on Instagram for illustration ideas.

Other papers you can use and easily find include gridded paper, tracing paper, or recycled wrapping paper. Just keep in mind that if you're using a glossy paper, it might be difficult to draw on the paper, so you'll need a sticky label for those.

Other supplies

You can use either a scalpel or scissors, and I like to keep everything tidy by using a cutting mat. If you like a bit of embellishment, you can use washi tape, rubber stamps, vintage stamps, glitter (which might not survive the post) and address labels. I don't always have the patience to persevere with my temperamental typewriter, but I'll sometimes use a typewriter font to print out an address label.

2. Make the basic envelope

This couldn't be any easier! If you're using a wooden template, simply draw round the template in pencil on the underside of the paper (so the pencil marks don't show.) Don't forget to draw through the inside lines as it makes a much neater envelope if you fold on these guide lines.

Using a scalpel or sharp scissors, cut round the template and fold in on the lines. You'll want to check everything lines up correctly before gluing the sides together with a simple stick glue. Just before gluing, you can use a bone folder or a ruler to crease the lines.

3. Decorate!

In the envelope above, I've added some neon washi tape to finish off the edges. Below are some envelopes Jeska from Lobster and Swan made for us a few years ago, using watercolours, washi tape, marker pens, and collage. Aren't they beautiful?

Other uses for homemade envelopes

I've mentioned that I often put cash or gift vouchers in these envelopes, but here are some more ideas you could try:

Seed swap

Lyndsey runs a seed swap every January at What You Sow - a fun secret seed exchange.

Lavender sachets

I'm not too talented with a sewing machine, but I visit a lavender farm nearby each summer and make simple fragrant envelopes for my drawers using paper envelopes and dried lavender. I just make sure I glue it closed.

Other small gifts

Other envelope-sized gifts include cinema tickets, lottery scratchcards, and temporary tattoos.

I'd love to hear any suggestions you having for using these envelopes! Is there anyone you can recommend I follow for snail mail art ideas? You can see some of my current favourites on my Pretty Envelopes Pinterest board.

Christmas wrapping ideas

Are you looking for new Christmas wrapping ideas to make wrapping presents part of the seasonal fun? If you like a bit of Christmas crafting, I hope you'll like some of my simple, but very effective, gift topper and gift wrapping ideas for Christmas and holiday gifts. If you don't have time for homemade gifts (I rarely do) it might make the festive season seem less frenzied if you can set aside a little time for some kind of creative activity. Making unique gift wrap is very satisfying.

Christmas wrapping party

I love to see other's gift wrapping ideas too, and it's something people often enjoy, so why not consider making it a group activity? In previous years we've taken part in gift wrapping parties, where we supply brown paper, craft supplies, a bit of greenery and some festive drinks - and ask for a charity donation in exchange.

The cost is pretty minimal - brown paper is inexpensive, and bakers twine usually comes in 100m rolls - so it doesn't cost too much to execute. I try to group supplies together so it isn't too chaotic - I organise washi tape by similar colours on these large safety pins. I've found that friends are generally happy to stick with classic colour schemes, so rather than catering for everyone's wrapping whims, try being consistent in your supplies. I like to use a silver and gold Christmas theme, with natural brown paper and foliage.

If you're expecting a lot of people or think this is something you might do in future years, you might be able to buy brown paper and tissue paper and bulk from your nearest whole flower market - we bought bunches of eucalyptus and a ream of pretty gold star tissue from London't New Covent Garden flower market (you don't need to be a florist or have a wholesale account to shop there, just remember that the prices quoted will exclude VAT, and that if you show up a little later the sellers will be more patient with you.) A traditional colour theme using red ribbon and dark green paper also works well.

In more ambitious years we've combined gift wrapping with making beeswax candles, lemon curd and peppermint bark, and provided the jars and catering boxes to wrap them in - but more recently I've found it easier to just let people wrap their own gifts. If you really want to include a 'making' element, people love making pom poms with the inexpensive plastic pom pom makers you can easily buy online.

Have you ever done something similar? If wrapping Christmas presents is not your idea of fun, you might find an event like this at least focuses your mind on the task - or you might find someone enthusiastic to do it for you! I've seen some friends in a new light when I've witnessed creative skills I didn't know they had!

Easy ways to make unique gift wrap

1. Add a personalised touch

An easy way to make a parcel look special is simply to use a letter sticker to add the recipient's initial, or a rubber stamp to stamp their name or initial. I love the font on these alphabet stamps.

2. Add a small crafty touch

Even a small crafty element will make your Christmas gift wrap unique. Your friend or family member will appreciate the extra effort! Here's some easy ideas that anyone can manage:

Make your own gift tags

- Even if your crafting skills aren't amazing (I'm all about the quick crafty fix myself), you can stamp a design on a plain brown tag (don't worry if it goes off the edge - that looks great too), add a little washi tape to the edge of a tag or small envelope, or layer a couple of items (try a letter sticker on top of washi tape stripes). You may find creative skills you didn't know you had!

- Use a stamp to make the tag itself. Many of our rubber stamps are a good size for making tags (we added a silver star sticker on top of our Christmas tree stamp). You can use a rivet punch (this is the one I bought from Amazon) to make a hole at the top.

Make your own wrapping paper

- Use stamps on plain brown paper to make your own wrapping paper. We keep paper from online deliveries, stamp it with nature-themed stamps, and then scrunch up the paper afterwards for a rustic look! Geometric designs look better on smooth paper. It doesn't matter if the designs are randomly repeated and not in exact lines so don't worry about accuracy - when it's wrapped up no-one will notice. For small parcels you can add washi tape or glitter tape triangles to jazz up plain paper. I'd stay small scale if you do this one - you'll soon get crafter's fatigue if you attempt anything more ambitious! If you don't have many Christmas-specific craft supplies to hand you can still be creative - try using the rubber on the end of a pencil to make polka dots on plain paper!

3. Less doesn't have to be more

Add as much bling as you're comfortable with: things I like to add include eucalyptus stems (these dry out nicely, so you don't need to worry about bits of pine all over the carpet), gypsophila, dried orange slices, jingle bells, cute paperclips such as these arrow paperclips, and glitter stars.

4. Add a touch of luxury

This year I'm using this leather string, which is a beautiful quality and a stylish alternative to Christmas ribbon. I'm mainly using it on small gifts, as it's pricey if you're wrapping huge boxes, but for larger boxes, why not try this gold and white bakers twine or this elegant black wax string. Both are 100 metres long so will wrap lots of presents!

Making your own personalised ribbon is very easy but gives incredibly satisfying results!

1. Buy cotton ribbon (such as our grey cotton ribbon) or bias binding from a local haberdashers. The thicker ribbon below is bias binding and is very inexpensive.

2. Lay a piece of newspaper or brown paper on a cutting mat, so you don't stain your mat.

3. Stamp the design of your choice! Our ink pads are suitable for printing on fabric, and you can fix the ink with an iron, but I've never done this and think the results turn out fine! If you use a newer ink pad it will work better as the ink saturates better when fresh.

I used the below rubber stamps for our ribbon:

- Pine cone stamp

How to make a washi tape feather

Want an easy but striking washi tape idea?

I've been making washi tape feathers for years, as they've consistently been one of my favourite washi tape crafts. They're easy to make as long as you're careful in your approach (they involve some fine detail) and soon become addictive! I can guarantee that if you give someone a gift with one of these on top, they'll be seriously impressed with your crafting prowess and they'll want to learn how to make one too! You can tout yourself as a washi tape expert :)

I've also rounded up our top 10 washi tape wrapping ideas - if you'd like our free guide, sign up to our mailing list and a free PDF will shortly pop into your inbox!

Lay out your washi tape

1. Lay out a piece of washi tape flat on a cutting mat, double the length of how long you want your feather to be. I folded a little extra under at the top, to secure the tape to the board.

Add the thread

2. Run a piece of thread down the centre of the tape, starting from the halfway point and leaving some extra length at the bottom (the bone of the feather.) You can use wax string or something thicker but I find the best results come from normal sewing thread.

{Included above: large safety pin, neon yellow washi tape, white washi tape, neon pink washi tape, pastel washi tape.}

Fold over the washi tape

3. Fold the washi tape over on itself at the midpoint, being careful to line up the outside edges.

Shape the feather

4. Cut round the edge of the tape, to shape it into a feather shape.

Feather it out

5. Using a scalpel, cut lines in an upwards diagonal, away from the thread in the middle. You don't want to cut through the tape, but try and cut as close to the centre as possible. Cut the opposite side in the opposite direction - still cutting upwards, but towards the left on the left side. vs. the right on the right side.

And finally, the finished feather!

6. Pull apart the slits carefully with your fingers to form your feather shape. They look great as a gift topper, especially bunched together.

Make your own advent calendar

I've rounded up just a few advent calendars below, including a couple of my own projects which you might not have seen over the last few years.

If you 're a fan of the DIY advent calendar, some of these calendars are pretty easy to put together. Just don't leave it too late! I believe craft fatigue to be a real condition - something I suffer from whenever I have photo shoots, and every year around 31st November when I realise I have one day to make my advent calendar! ;)

I highly recommend making an advent calendar as a group activity. I introduced 'Christmas crafternoon' in a previous job - we'd make a calendar with Secret Santa gifts and I'd bring in all my stamps, string and craft supplies. We made some seriously spectacular calendars and I loved seeing how people who don't consider themselves to be creative can still make something amazing! Every day we'd have a little quiz to decide who opened the next 'door' and it was so much fun.

1. One to buy: something like the above fabric advent calendar (sold out) is a good half-way option, as you can still personalise it your way with crafted parcels, bits of foliage and hanging ornaments which are your style. You could make something similar relatively easily - I'm thinking a dowel rod and a roll of hessian would work well (I've bought that before in a pound shop.)

2. Hanging parcels from a loop: I'm fond of an embroidery hoop (also below) and it always looks great. The above uses black wax string.

3. Make a simple tree shape: decorate with fairy lights and little parcels. You could use old cardboard or foam board as long as it is thick enough to stand up. I'd probably make a smaller version of the above and use a staple gun to add the parcels (covering the staples with a bit of fancy tape.) The advent tree above uses these advent calendar tags.

It's coming up to the time of year when I'm pinning Christmas gift wrap ideas like crazy! I prefer easy, crafty ideas and supplies which can be used all year round (no Santa paper here.) My gift wrap supplies stash is, as you might imagine, quite large, but I love simple ideas. In recent years I've stocked quite a lot of gift wrap from House Doctor (hello, favourite leather string) and one of the nicest things is that they style beautiful images for their stockists to use. Here's some of my favourites from the last few years - the emphasis is on a stylish, generic patterned wrapping paper (we don't stock those as they're not cost-effective to post!), but adding simple twine and a stylish Christmas tag or postcard for a seasonal touch.

Tips for styling pinnable gift wrapped images:

- I love the vinyl photo backdrops from Capture by Lucy; great quality and they roll up for easy storage. She stocks lots of similar backdrops to the textured backgrounds used above.

- Wooden bobbins such as those which come with our range of leather strings look great when half-rolled out around the edge of photos.

- Add a natural touch with foliage and pine cones. I try and remember to collect pine cones and keep them from the previous Christmas, and greenery such as eucalyptus is available all year round, so you can style a stylish image out of season. Pine cones can be decorated with white or neon paint, and even glitter. Any kind of dried flower with a bit of glitter can look festive, though this kind of accessory might work best for styled photo shoots - gift recipients might be less thankful for half-dead foliage under the tree!

- Add a pair of Instagram-worthy scissors (note that most pairs we've tested aren't brilliantly sharp so we tend to use pretty scissors mainly for styling.)

I've been stocking washi tape since I first saw it on American design blogs almost a decade ago, and have loved it ever since. I recently found these easy ideas for using washi tape in the Papermash archive. There are so many washi tape uses - even children love it! Here's a few suggestions of things to do with washi tape - even the least crafty person can easily recreate these styling and gift wrapping ideas!

If you want more suggestions, I've created a free PDF with 10 of our favourite washi tape gift wrapping ideas, which you can get if you sign up to our mailing list here.

1. Decorating plain pegs

A very easy craft to do with washi tape is decorating these mini pegs. These add a special touch to gift wrapping or for can be used for decorating a moodboard. I just placed the mini peg upside down on a cutting mat and sliced the tape to size around it.

2. Mini washi tape bunting

There's always multiple tiny jam jars or yoghurt pots in my cupboard and it's easy to make mini bunting by folding a piece of washi tape over some fine string or thread. Multiple jars make great table settings on a long summer table. If you're keen to make a longer length, it looks great as wrapping on a plain brown parcel too.

3. Decorate a gift tag

It's so easy to buy cheap luggage tags or plain brown tags and decorate them with a few strips of washi tape in your favourite colours! You can cut them into little triangles or simply layer stripes horizontally or vertically, or tape round the edges.

Blognic events. They're a fun, relaxed way to meet friendly creative types! They've evolved over the years in the same way social media has. In the beginning, people were super-snappy with their SLR cameras, but it's become more of a quick phone photo event! It's usually 20-30 people, which is a nice number for chatting to everyone. Each year I've met new (to me) bloggers and designers and as it's pretty low-key and low-profile the types it attracts tend to be very open and friendly. Last year was one of my favourite Blognics. It was chucking it down with rain (intermittently!), but it meant those who persevered really wanted to be there. There were some kids having a lot of fun hiding amidst the trees.

This year my friend Zeena Shah is co-hosting Blognic with me on Sunday, 23rd July, in Regent's Park, London. You can RSVP here - we'll be sending out location details nearer the time.

3 easy age gift wrapping ideas

It's no secret that I like to gift wrap but I do generally stick to plain brown paper, usually recycled from a delivery. Still, I like to make a parcel a little bit special and today I'm sharing a few very easy gift wrapping ideas which celebrate the birthday age! Some people are extremely sensitive about their age (in my case it is two youngish male friends who steadfastly refuse to tell me their age) so if it's not a landmark celebration, you might want to be sure they'll appreciate it! In my opinion we should celebrate every birthday as in ten years we'll look back and think we were so young! I can remember very little of significance from when I was 30, because it was so long ago, but I meet people with so much anxiety around a big birthday - some as young as 30 even starting to think about Botox!

Anyway, if you have a friend who's having a significant birthday or who you know makes so secret of the fact, I'm sure they will love the personal touch of any of the below gift wrapping ideas.

1. Photograph number landmarks and print the photos

I've been saving this for ages - it's a photograph of a table outside an Italian ice-cream cafe near Clapham Common bandstand. Just waiting for the 41 year old friend with a summer birthday so I can roll this one out! There's lot of easy services to print your Instagrams or iphone photos. I printed this from the Printic app a few years ago, and it arrived from France within a few days and in a very stylish orange envelope. I've also used Social Print Studio and found their quality also to be good (thicker than Printic, which is nice for a gift tag, though you'll need to order a larger quantity.)

If you spot an appropriate number while you're out and about, you can easily photograph it and save it for an appropriate birthday! Can anyone suggest a number-themed hashtag on Instagram to give us some ideas of where to go and be snap-happy? Or if you know any good London number spots, please share the location in the comments!

(Tape: similar glitter tape here.)

2. Look out for vintage ephemera

I bought the below old price labels at Chiswick car boot sale in West London, which had (at least the time I went) a stall with all kinds of vintage ephemera and paper. Even if I someday become a minimalist (a change I've seen happen to many as they've gotten older) I expect I'll keep picking up these bits, which make great photo props and it's a bonus if they fit a birthday too! One of my joys is having the time to rummage through my ephemera box of old French comics, sewing patterns, shorthand books and numerous other bits of paper long forgotten by their original owner, but much loved by me. Usually, after a few years have passed, I might consider cutting them up even though it seems like a little bit of a sacrilege!

For the below I'm waiting for a 42 year old - and unless I'm totally confident of my present-picking abilities, maybe one who's given me a list! (I'm all about the list, by the way.)

Also used:

3. Decorate with vintage stamps

I love decorating with old stamps and always have some in my craft stash. I used to work across the street from Stanley Gibbons in London, and I loved to pop in at lunchtime and to the other traditional stamp shops on the Strand. I'm not sure how many people from my publishing company were using their lunch hour for such pursuits but I loved the history, the specialised nature of it and the clientele. Who exactly is shopping in there? I'm not sure I've ever met a stamp collector in real life but I can see the appeal. Please reveal yourself in the comments if that's you! For crafting and essential gift wrap kit you can buy inexpensive bulk packs in places like WH Smith, who stock lots of designs including these bird stamps. You may have to trawl through your pack a bit to find countries which have age-appropriate currency (see my Polish and Vietnamese stamps below - their stamps come in denominations of 30 and 40 - bonus!)

Which is your favourite? I'd love to hear any ideas you might have! If you have some brown paper and washi tape, there are so many possibilities!

Why I use a mid year diary

I've been using a mid year diary for many years, and these Rifle Paper Co planners sell well every year so I know that many others do too. I don't use one to plan my social life (I have a small handbag diary), and am definitely not a major long-term goal setter, but I've found it really useful to use one for my business. Here's a couple of reasons why I've found the mid year diary habit a useful tool for Papermash.

{Above: Rifle Paper Co lively floral planner.}

It's easy to understand why people follow the academic year pattern simply because it's something they've been used to since school, and even more so if they work in an educational environment. However, I've had lots of finance jobs (I'm an accountant) and have been used to working in large corporate environments with financial years which end in September. I always associate September / October with new starts and initiatives - the perfect time for back to school stationery! When I'm already planning a budget based on the fiscal year 2017/2018, it's easy to associate myself with 2018 when we're still in 2017. Occasionally I've even signed a cheque with the wrong year!

{Above: Rifle Paper Co floral foil planner.}

I like to use a Rifle Paper Co mid year diary to plan my social and press content. I'm not a brilliant advance planner for anything else (my Myers Briggs profile can attest to that! - borderline INT but extremely P, in case you're interested!) so I find it works well to have a diary which easily forces me to think a little further ahead and think outside the calendar year. It's easy in the rush from July onwards to concentrate all my efforts on Christmas,a predictably busy time of the year, and then find come December that I've made no effort whatsoever to secure any press for January to March. I can't always pull it off at the last minute as many magazines work at least 3 months ahead. I find that a diary which runs from August onwards prompts me to think about these key periods just at the period I could be completely consumed with planning for Christmas, even though January can be one of my busiest months of the year!

{Above: Rifle Paper Co herb garden planner.}

These Rifle Paper Co 2017 2018 planners also help me to follow up Christmas contacts in the following year. I can make notes in the latter half of 2017 as to when journalists usually style their Christmas shoots and shopping pages (there's a wide variety depending on the magazine) and as the diary is for 17 months (from August 2017 - December 2018) I can add a note in the same month in 2018 to remind me to contact key people at the right time so it's neither too early or too late. It does take a little juggling as I start a new diary each August (I don't massively see the benefit of a 17 month diary apart from the reason above) but I just concentrate on copying those key contacts over. As I have had these diaries since May I can still plan way in advance and there isn't too much overlap.

Of course you don't need a paper diary to plan ahead further than the end of the year but it works for me.

If you have a specific reason for using a mid-year or academic year diary, and it's not because of schoolday habits, I'd love to know why! And if you are a person who has a five year plan (a totally foreign concept to me) I'd love to know if that has helped you push your dreams forward?

All the 2017 2018 diaries above are available here. I have some other notepads and planners I use to manage my business on a weekly basis (some digital tools too), which I'll share another time! I'll have to plan that into my diary ;)

---

Why should I buy a Rifle Paper Co planner?

1. The quality is excellent. One of the reasons I stock a wide range of Rifle Paper Co products is that their quality is consistently good. In the 7 or so years I've been stocking their products, I've had to return at most 1 or 2 items. With an online shop, quality is particularly important as you can't see the item in real life. With Rifle Paper Co I don't have any concerns - I can stock something without seeing a sample and know the paper quality, for example, will be good.

2. You're a planner addict and you'll appreciate and cherish it! Some friends were looking at my website recently and they couldn't believe how expensive a planner is. These people are not my target customer! Our planners are comparable or not much more expensive than other designer brands such as Kate Spade if you work out the price-per-use (one of my favourite excuses in life!)

3. You're a stationery lover and you appreciate the finer details! Here's some of our favourites:

- All of the planners have a spiral binding (the smaller ones have an outside covered binding) so they lie flat.

- They have a little pocket in the back with a ruler feature, handy for storing receipts.

- Each week has an inspirational quote. This is my absolutely favourite feature. Here's a sample of a few you'll find inside:

"Gratitude is the fairest blossom which springs from the soul." - Henry Ward Beecher

"Nothing is a waste of time if you use the experience wisely." - Auguste Rodin

"A book gives knowledge, but it is life that gives understanding." - Hebrew proverb.

Why shouldn't I buy a Rifle Paper Co planner?

1. You're fussy about UK bank holidays. Rifle Paper Co is a US brand, so it lists US bank holidays only. I think we only have a few bank holidays that are UK-specific so I'm able to keep track but you might want to write these in.

2. You want to fit it in your handbag. For organising my own social life, I use a slim handbag diary. These planners are a little chunky - the spine on the standard planners is approx. 30cm. I don't want to carry it around all day.

3. You won't use a 17-month planner. I've explained above how I use a 17-month diary for my business but I have to admit I don't totally see the point of it for everyone - you might be better waiting for the Rifle 12-month diary which follows a normal calendar year.
