Version 0.3 will be release shortly, this is a major update to the theme and a handful of changes/improvements have been made thus I have decided to release it in beta until further testing has been completed. Three things you should know before testing/using the theme.

It requires WordPress 3.0 at a minimum.

If you are upgrading from a previous version of the theme please have a look at the readme file included. This is considered a testing period so you are upgrading at your own risk. Don’t be too alarmed it has been tested by a few users and they have used and or upgraded the theme with no issues.

I’ll say again, right now I am looking for people who run to give it a run and see if they come across any errors. Please feel free to email themesupport@papertreedesign.com should you find any bugs.

Moving right along, as mentioned in a previous post there are a few new features added this time around and some that have been removed. The theme does now have support for post thumbnails. While it is deactivated by default you do have the option to turn them on via the theme options. You also have the ability to reconfigure the thumbnail size, default is 150×150. Note: You may have to run the regenerated thumbnails plugin should you decide to do this.

There are a few major differences in the theme options that you should also be aware of.

The site meta keywords option is no longer available but are available on a per post basis.

Analytics scripts option now only accepts Google Analytics and requires the Property ID rather than the full script. You can still insert analytics via hook for child themes or of course by editing the footer.php file.

Display options – in previous versions you were able to control the display of either the_content or the_excerpt on the home page. You now have the option to also control the archives, category, search pages etc.

You will also notice that rather than basic custom field usage for meta information that you will now have a custom meta box making it much easier to understand and use. Your old post meta options should transfer as the actual custom fields the new meta boxes handle have not changed.

Once again, please read the included readme file and feel free to check out the included changelog (detailed). Ask any questions and report any bugs you encounter to themesupport@papertreedesign.com.

P.S There may be an HTML5 version in the works!

Enjoy!

Thumbnail Support will be available in the latest version of the Charlene Theme. This documentation is subject to change pending release of Version 0.3.

Being the most requested feature since the addition of thumbnail support in WordPress, Charlene Version 0.3 will include support for thumbnails. This feature has been added in a way that will keep both sides of the fence happy – thumbnail support is active on theme installation but the display of thumbnails can be toggled on and off through the options page.

You will also have the option to set your thumbnail sizes which may or may not require the use of the “Regenerate Thumbnails” plugin. The default thumbnail size is 150×150.

The Full Foto child theme will also make use of this feature to some degree – development is still in progress and will follow the release of Charlene Version 0.3.

The Charlene Theme v0.2 is now available for download. I tried to focus on two major areas for this release. The first was to begin tidying up the css a bit, consolidating were possible and improving the typographic style. Please see the changelog as well as [master.css - section /*-- Typography --*/].

In regards to typography, what I would consider to be a semi-major change here was the decision to drop text justification on entry-content. It was a battle but in the end I decided that packaging the theme with justified text and no added support for hyphenation just wasn’t going to work for me any more. You will see in master.css that I simply commented it out so that you can easily re-justify the text, however if you do so I would highly recommend that you check out wp-Typography to add support for hyphenation and other goodies.

The second important update to this version is the improvements made to better facilitate the creation of child themes based on Charlene. See Full Foto a WordPress Child Theme build on Charlene for more information. (Full-Foto will be available soon) The major changes include the removal of the
custom-functions.php
with the recommendation to customize via child themes moving forward and the addition of two new hooks.

Additionally there were some other minor changes to the theme to include improved security. Please see the changelog below for a full list of changes.

Note: if you currently use the Charlene Theme on your site and are considering an upgrade to this version I highly recommend that you read below to see if any of the changes will affect your current installation.

If you have any questions concerning Version 0.2 please do not hesitate to drop me an email at either hello[at]papertreedesign.com or themesupport[at]papertreedesign.com.

A note on upgrading – currently the theme is not available via WordPress theme repository so you will need to download the new theme, delete the old theme and upload the new, backups are recommended.

We are approaching two months since this theme was first released and having not really marketed it at all I am excited that 40 of you have decided to take it for a spin. With that said, I am hoping that a few of you out there have subscribed to the updates or at the very least check back from time to time and can now come back for a reunion of sorts.

Having recently updated the main Papertree Site, wrapped up a few client projects and begun development of a second theme, I would now like to focus on the next steps for this theme. So I would love for any feedback, ideas or notes on bugs you have experienced. Please feel free to email me: jeremy [at] papertreedesign or drop a comment below.

Also I would definitely recommend and/or appreciate if you took the time to subscribe to Papertree Design, if for no other reason than to get ongoing updates on this theme and new ones on the way.

Looking forward to your replies!

First off meet Charlene. Charlene is a theme based on something that I had created in the past for a personal WordPress site on which received some good feedback and even requests for theme release. This revamped version is built on a theme framework I assembled for my own personal/business use. I contemplated whether it was necessary to include all of the features of that framework in a publicly released theme and after some thought decided to go ahead with it as they may be useful to some.

It wouldn’t be right if I did not mention credit to those I have learned from over my time working with WordPress so please check out some of the credits in the readme.html file.

Setting up the theme. Upon loading and activating the theme the head on over to the widgets panel, where you will notice that three widgets have been preloaded for you. These three widgets will get you set up similar to the demo you see here. You will see that one custom widget appears in in the main sidebar. This widget works very similar to the normal recent posts widget packaged with WordPress, all you need to do is select the number of entries you would like to display.

The second stop you will want to make is the theme options panel located under the Appearance tab. Here you will find a simple set of options that will allow you to do a few key things when setting up your theme. Such as adding your Feedburner Url or easily dropping your Analytics code in the footer. Check it out for the full list of options.

A few key points I should mention – While the majority of the theme options are self explanatory some of them may need extra mention, please see below.

You will notice under general options that there is a checkbox for SEO, should you use plugins such as All In One SEO Pack you will want to check this box to disable the built in functions for better SEO. If you decide not to use a plugin many of the same functions will be taken care of for you such as:

Titles

Descriptions – simply add a custom field named ‘description’ to your post or page, value of course being your custom description.

Keywords

Canonical Urls

Meta Robots

You will also notice that you have the option to display
the_content()
instead of the
the_excerpt()
on the home page by simply checking a box. The default is
the_excerpt()
.

More Reading:

Theme Hooks

Options Panel

That’s it, pretty simple set up and your theme should be ready to go, enjoy! Oh and if you love it or hate it please feel free to drop me a comment or an email, I am open to criticism and kudos.

You can download the theme hear and subscribe to the Feed to stay update on changes and new releases.

Descriptions and keywords can be added to your posts and pages by using custom fields. For Descriptions you would use the custom field name: description and for keywords you would of course use the custom field name: keywords. Simple as that. If you are unfamiliar with custom fields you can check out this page in the codex for greater detail. Here are the basics of what you are looking to do.

After you have entered your post or page scroll down a few and you will see a post box titled “Custom Fields”. Under the heading Name, you will see a drop down and just below that is Enter New. Click Enter New and type your key, such as, description. In the Value field to the right you would enter your custom description.

The same steps can be followed with your keyword, be sure that they are comma separated. To answer the question ahead of time, these are not the same as nor will the keywords be generated from Post Tags.

The documentation, tips, tricks and slices of code here will more than likely continue to develop and grow moving into the future. As people start to issue feedback and ask questions about the theme more answers will start to reveal themselves. I certainly tried to keep things as simple as possible, it is after all a minimal theme so I don’t see a whole lot of reason to heavily modify the look of the theme, but hey what do I know.

That being said I am going to compile a few useful tips on using the theme below. Simple things that popped into my head as I get ready to release this thing. Please feel free to add your questions and comments below and I will do my best to provide timely additions to this documentation.

On the Excerpt

You have probably noticed by now that the excerpt looks a bit different than you average theme, reason being the ‘excerpt_length’ has been filtered. Filter available in post-functions.php So the question is how can I change it or revert it to the original length? Pretty easy as a matter of fact. Open up your custom functions file and do the following:

First to remove the filter and revert to the WordPress default of 55.

remove_filter( 'excerpt_length', 'eighttwenty_excerpt_length' );

And maybe you decided you don’t really like 100 so you would like to try out 150 characters.

add_filter( 'excerpt_length', 'my_custom_excerpt_length');

function my_custom_excerpt_length() {
    $my_value = 75;
    return $my_value;
}
