Día 20-N, no Val do Dubra apareceu unha papeleta para o PP cunha loncha de chourizo.

Foi dada por válida, despois de consultar o manual de instrucións das eleccións, que polo visto nada dicía de chourizos (nin dos que se usan para bocadillos nin dos que se amañan para conseguilos de balde). Véxase a noticia aquí.

Será unha mensaxe subliminal? Resta saber se está dirixida aos "Políticos chourizos" ou ao "PP chourizo" (ou a ambas as cousas)?
A persoa que tiña a papeleta na man liouse e, en vez de meter a loncha de chourizo no bocata, meteuna no sobre. Resta saber como foi a parar a devandita loncha no sobre?
A persoa quixo ir de intelectual e performar unha tradución cultural do acto de votar. Resta saber cal foi a cultura de partida e cal a de chegada?
A persoa en cuestión lembrouse de repente que inda non merendara. Levaba chorizo en cima e, a falta de pan, quixo facerse un bocata coa papeleta. Synopsis: Translating tells about the journey of words from a language to another. Translators are used to face words, to follow their traces and force them into new spaces. Translators have to master not only a language but also what’s behind it: an entire culture and an idea of the world; that’s why we have asked ten translators to come with us in this journey through words and languages and take us to discover these worlds. Every language is a sound and the translator is a sort of musician. We find a musical instrument beside every language: conservatory students try to perform the same sheet of music translating the same melody into their own instrument. Language is also a mixture and the translator is a baker who prepares the bread everyday. In every country we can find different shapes of bread, made by the same ingredients. Language, like bread, is an alchemy we put on the table and eat everyday. To make this documentary, I put translators together with musicians and bakers. Each of them tells about an aspect of translating. The translator at his desk explains its deep sense, the musician with his own instrument makes us listen to the sound, the night baker reveals his mixture.

Only recently discovered, these neurons allow us to learn complex social behaviors, some of which formed the foundations of human civilization as we know it. With austerity measures pitting cultural producers against each other in a competition for survival, collectivity and resistance may seem like obsolete notions. All the while, the rising popularity of artistic research and interdisciplinary approaches between the arts and sciences brings with it an increase in institutional and financial backing. However, what this recent hype does not transport is the knowledge of a long history of interrelations between art and knowledge production in the seize and capture of its spaces of autonomy or strategies of collective struggles.

This issue of transversal sets out to map the diverse formulations of overlaps and the various neighboring zones between art and knowledge production and how they have opened a complex range of potential for intervention into the social and the political. Its contributions analyze concrete artistic practices, follow the historical traces of an "aesthetics of resistance" and open a critical geopolitical perspective on creativity, the arts and knowledge in the crises of contemporary capitalism.

Las medidas de austeridad que provocan el enfrentamiento entre productores culturales que compiten entre sí por sobrevivir, parecieran haber vuelto obsoletos conceptos como "resistencia". Mientras tanto, crece la financiación de las investigaciones en el campo del arte y de las articulaciones interdisciplinares entre las artes y las ciencias, que son cada vez más respaldadas por las instituciones. Aun así, esta nueva moda no parece apuntar hacia el mismo propósito que buscaba cierta larga historia de interrelación entre el arte y la producción de conocimiento: la conquista de espacios de autonomía y el diseño de estrategias para la lucha colectiva.

Este nuevo número de transversal propone cartografiar diversas formas en que se realizan solapamientos y zonas colindantes entre el arte y la producción de conocimiento. Dichas confluencias dan lugar a nuevas condiciones desde las que resulta posible intervenir en lo social y en lo político. Las contribuciones a este número analizan prácticas artísticas concretas, rastrean las pistas históricas de una "estética de la resistencia" y abren una perspectiva crítica desde la que vislumbrar una nueva geopolítica de la creatividad, las artes y el conocimiento, en el interior de las crisis que aquejan al capitalismo contemporáneo.

Um informe sobre a investigação em neurociência, redigido para o Parlamento da R.F.A, fala de problemas da "tradução do mental ao neuronal ou do neuronal ao mental", referindo-se, entre outros aspectos, ao recente debate sobre o livre-arbítrio que tem lugar nos âmbitos da neurociência e das ciências humanas. Tanto o informe on-line como a sua versão publicada em livro analisam as acusações, dirigidas desde a neurociência às ciências humanas, no sentido de estas postularem, em última instância, a ideia de uma substância mental a existir independentemente da matéria. Esta noção errônea dever-se-ia à incapacidade das ciências humanas de explicar os processos mentais a partir da actividade neuronal. Os autores do informe advertem, porém, que também a neurociência sofre de uma falha na explicação da consciência, uma vez que não consegue resolver o problema de como um código neuronal é capaz de produzir um significado. Embora conheçamos as formas como os conteúdos da consciência se vão constituindo através da cultura (sociedade, língua, escrita, etc.), ainda não sabemos como estes se realizam a nível neuronal, para não falarmos do processo de tradução entre os respectivos códigos. Neste assunto, curiosamente, sabe-se mais do contexto paratradutivo do que da própria tradução.

We also want to let you in on an experimental feature that’s still in its earliest stages—Conversation Mode. This is a new interface within Google Translate that’s optimized to allow you to communicate fluidly with a nearby person in another language. You may have seen an early demo a few months ago, and today you can try it yourself on your Android device.

Currently, you can only use Conversation Mode when translating between English and Spanish. In conversation mode, simply press the microphone for your language and start speaking. Google Translate will translate your speech and read the translation out loud. Your conversation partner can then respond in their language, and you’ll hear the translation spoken back to you. Because this technology is still in alpha, factors like regional accents, background noise or rapid speech may make it difficult to understand what you’re saying. Even with these caveats, we’re excited about the future promise of this technology to be able to help people connect across languages.

As Android devices have spread across the globe, we’ve seen Translate for Android used all over. The majority of our usage now comes from outside the United States, and we’ve seen daily usage from more than 150 countries, from Malaysia to Mexico to Mozambique. It’s really rewarding for us to see how this new platform is helping us break down language barriers the world over.

Translate supports 53 languages, from Afrikaans to Yiddish, and voice input for 15 languages.

Word Lens: un iPhone apps que avanza no longo camiño da tradumática

Ever been confused at a restaurant in a foreign country and wish you could just scan your menu with your iPhone and get an instant translation? Well as of today you are one step closer thanks to Word Lens from QuestVisual.

The iPhone app, which hit iTunes last night, is the culmination of 2 1/2 years of work from founders Otavio Good and John DeWeese. The paid app, which currently offers only English to Spanish and Spanish to English translation for $4.99, uses Optical Character Recognition technology to execute something which might as well be magic. This is what the future, literally, looks like.

Founder Good explains the app’s process simply, “It tries to find out what the letters are and then looks in the dictionary. Then it draws the words back on the screen in translation.” Right now the app is mostly word for word translation, useful if you’re looking to get the gist of something like a dish on a menu or what a road sign says.

At the moment the only existing services even remotely like this are Pleco, a Chinese learning app and a feature on Google Goggles where you can snap a stillshot and send that in for translation. Word Lens is currently self-funded.

Good says that the obvious steps for Word Lens’ future is to get more languages in. He’s planning on incorporating major European languages and is also thinking about other potential uses including a reader for the blind, “I wouldn’t be surprised if we did French next, Italian and since my mom is Brazilian, Portuguese.”

Says Good, modestly, “The translation isn’t perfect, but it gets the point across.” You can try it out for yourself here.

A Guerra dos Paratextos: do Wikileaks à Trans-e-leaks-ation

Admitamos por um momento que a nossa 'realidade' é um texto e aquilo que pensamos e que dizemos dela são os respectivos paratextos. Desde 2007 Wikileaks veio inundando esta nossa 'realidade' com uma maré de impactantes paratextos. O soma informativo ao que nos habituou a Brave New World da política pós-democrática já não parece surtir efeito. O mundo depois do cablegate será outro, certamente igual ao dos outros mundos surgidos depois de qualquer -gate anterior, mas definitivamente outro. Um resultado dos documentos secretos publicados pela Wikileaks é que se torna a alimentar o ideal de uma tradução literal e imediata da realidade ser possível. Não é que não tenhamos já tido a suspeita de que este ou outro assunto tenha sido assim, ou que esta ou qualquer outra personagem da política tenha dito ou feito isto ou aquilo. Porém, agora nos dizem que existem 'provas'. E ficamos a pensar: A verdade sempre sairá à luz?! Será que o paratexto faz com que o texto seja mais versosímil, que se aumenta a sua credibilidade ou, até, a sua 'autenticidade'? O telefax secreto feito público poderá provar que uma suspeita é verdade? Por enquanto, só uma coisa é certa: O secreto revelado e desmistificado - embora não se tenha publicado nada que era realmente top secret - erige-se em tradução literal da realidade. No fundo, porém, toda esta translação continua a ser uma dança na corda bamba tendida entre muitas linhas - uma versão, no máximo, translinear da realidade. Uma trans-e-lação com a sua correspondente paratrans-e-lação. Contudo, o grande interesse desta paratradução dos acontecimentos políticos recentes está a condicionar a realidade de uma forma cada vez mais absoluta. É uma intervenção na realidade que chega a evocar receios, medos, resistências várias, etc. e que coloca com renovada força as velhas questões da liberdade na internet e no jornalismo, da função de protecção dos dados e da função de protecção do estado em relação à cidadania, entre outras.

Mas nas últimas semanas os demónios desta caixa de Pandora tornaram-se, também, contra quem a abriu. Wikileaks tentou controlar a economia da atenção pública, tentou dosificar e subastar a informação desde uma posição que não está sujeita a nenhum tipo de controlo. Partiu, com certa razão, da premisa que a internet não pode, nem deve ser regulada. James Cowie declara no blogue de uma empresa de seguridade IT: "it's apparent that search and social infrastructure (Google and Twitter) now play a key role in re-spawning content that gets blocked in any one place, and drawing even more attention to the surviving copies. If suppressed content automatically goes viral, the Internet's construction basically guarantees that that content will have a home for the rest of time. If you attack DNS support, people will tweet raw IP addresses. If you take down the BGP routes to web content, people will put up more mirrors, or switch to overlay networks to distribute the data. You can't burn down the Library of Alexandria any more— it will respawn in someone's basement in Stockholm, or Denver, or Beijing."

Também a questão se a acusação de violação, que pesa sobre Julian Assange, é verdade ou fruto de uma pressão exercida pelos EUA sobre o Ministério Público sueco, não permanecerá um mistério durante muito tempo. Uma das duas mulheres que interpuseram a denúncia, ainda comunicou dias depois da suposta agressão afirmações positivas e, até, eufóricas sobre a sua relação com Assange através do Twitter. Agora sabe-se que ela eliminou os tweets que contradizem o conteúdo da acusação e que um internauta sueco conseguiu recuperá-los.

Porém, será que Wikileaks sobrevivirá esta guerra dos paratextos? Ou resultará a sua estrutura, centralizada na pessoa e personalidade de Assange um problema de sobrevivência? Por esta mesma razão já se deram dissidências. O ex-colaborador de Wikileaks, Daniel Domscheit-Berg, acaba de anunciar que em breve irá para o ar um projecto alternativo, sem associação a meios de comunicação privilegiados e com uma estrutura menos centralizada e mais democrática: Openleaks.

A era da trans-e-leaks-ation só acaba de começar.

Modernism and postmodernism have questioned the critical, cultural, and political dimensions of poetry, and called our attention on the different medial and discursive hybridization practices in poetry and their localization in specific spaces or, as we might say, its paratranslational context. A forthcoming conference in Vigo (April 26th-27th 2011) will bring together artists and researchers, in order to explore paratranslation and (para)transelation of contemporary poetry. The conference will deal with the essayistic expansion of poetic diction, as well as with the interartistic, intermedial, interdiscursive and hypertextual connections of new poetic practices in its pragmatic, sociological, translatological or culturalogical dimensions. Talvez sexa unha das traducións máis creativas, máis transcreadoras da historia galega, a de concederlle o premio Otero Pedrayo a quen traballou para un ditador, esquivou responsabilidades en Montejurra e Vitoria, bañouse rindo en augas radioactivas como se non fose nada, fortaleceu o caciquismo galego, consolidou o feísmo e a destrución do medio ambiente galego, nunca reclamou as competencias non transferidas do estatuto galego, desprezou toda a cultura galega que non era folclórica, deixou inúmeras perlas sexistas para a historia, insinuou que @s nacionalistas estarían mellor aforcad@s, minimizou e malxestionou a catástrofe do Prestige e incluso dixo que Castelao, se aínda vivise, votaría no PP . Galicia caníbal? Galicia suicida!
