Summer vacation Holiday Planner Part 1 (Hill Stations - South India)

The exams getting over in another few days, the kids and children’s are awaiting their summer special vacation plan. Now, I could think as parent how much it is difficult to plan such a beautiful trip. To my knowledge, I can suggest some places that would get a top priority for this summer vacation.

Most of us know few places and few more plans you might have in mind. The plan might be visiting a Hill station or a forest trekking or a River base. My choice is to go and visit the Hill station and enjoy the mighty heat buster weather. When I say hill station, I would say Ooty, Kodaikanal, Coorg, Munar, Valparai, Yelagiri hills etc. These places are in south India and would be more preferable place with good reasonable cost. Ooty (Ootacamund or Udhagamandalam), Yelagiri, Kodaikanal, Valparai, Coorg and Munar out of these places, Ooty, Yelagiri, Kodaikanal, Valparai are part of Tamilnadu. Coorg or Kodagu (Origin place of river Cauvery) or Madikeri is in Karnataka. The mighty Munar is in Kerala.

Ooty, Kodaikanal, Munar have the same type of money expenditure and the weather would be awesome. Munar, you might have to afford little more from your pocket since it has become a honeymoon destiny and become more commercial.

To reach Munar, you can either go via Coimbatore or Madurai from Tamilnadu. Ernakulam or Cochin or Kottayam are places which are near to Munar from Kerala. The nearest Airports are Madurai and Cochin. The nearest railway stations are Ernakulam and Kottayam. Munar is in Idikki District, also if you are great lover of trekking then you can go to Anamudi the top point of Western Ghats of the same Idikki district of Anamalai hills. Anamudi is at the peak point of 2695mts higher than the sea level

To reach Ooty you can go from Chennai to Mettupalayam using Niligiri Express, which you can board from Chennai Central railway station. Most of the time this train would be full as the season is already started. The nearest Airport would be Coimbatore. From Coimbatore, Ooty is less than 100Kms where you can take a bus or book a cab in advance.

If you have a plan to go to Kodaikanal from Ooty, you can try the below route if you are going by your own travel by a Cab or own Car. From Ooty get down to Kothagiri, then Mettupalayam, Annur, Somanur, Palladam, Tharapuram, Palani, Kodaikanal. Since I visited few times Annur and I thought this route would be useful too.

To reach Kodaikanal, you can go from Chennai to Madurai by Air or by train you can reach to Kodai road junction. From there Kodaikanal is less than 80Kms. The world famous Palani temple is also the nearest location which you can visit and have Dharsan of lord Murugha or Subramanya.

To reach Valparai, it is again very near from Coimbatore about 95Kms. I would say Valparai is kept undisturbed and the tourism is less in Valparai. Those who want to stay for a week in peace without much noise and disturbance can choose Valparai. If you are planning to go via Coimbatore, do not miss the beauty of Pollachi, Aliyar Dam. If possible please also try and visit Athirappalli falls which is near to Valparai.

PVR in chennai

The much awaited PVR (Priya Village Road show) cinemas in all set to rock in Chennai. I personally went and checked when it is opening.
The great cinema experience PVR is ready to start their show on this Friday i.e. 9-Apr-2010.
I stay very near to this Ampa mall in Chennai, I could say it is very much a walkable distance. So all my movie thirst is all set to get over now. The PVR in Bangalore is the only place which I visited most in the last five years when I was in Bangalore. The next place, I missed a lot is the Start Bazzar which is very close to Form Mall in Bangalore all my weekend expenses would vanish here. Now, I would say this is a fortune that both Star bazzar and PVR are now at the same place Ampa Mall. The much awaited opening of PVR is all set to launch grand opening on this Friday 9th Apr 2010. I should say now one of the Icon place in Chennai. The ticket rate would be maximum of Rs. 120. Now PVR is going to be a major competitor for INOX, Satyam and other multiplex theaters. The theater is located in heart of the Chennai near Aminjikarai and Nelson Manikam road junction. The important thing is that there are no theaters near by and the great residential layout Anna Nagar is also near to this. People those who stay near Anna Nagar, Aminjikarai, Arumbakkam and Nungambakkam can reach PVR cinemas quickly, I would say not more than 5 mints drive even in peak traffic hours.

Karthikai Deepam

This is a festival celebrated by Tamil Hindus on the Tamil month called Karthikai which falls on December or November end. This is even called as festival of lights or even Deepam(oil lamp) festival. It is believed by Hindu Tamilians that the birth of Lord Subramaniya(முருகன்) happened on this date. The lord Subramaniya or Murugan is primarily worshiped by Tamilians and also some parts of Malaysia, Sri lanka, China (Penang), Singapore and Mauritius. Even people believe the origin of Tamil language is after Lord Muruga's birth. Agal Velaku (Oil Lit Lamps) is placed in front of all houses and the entire streets will glow in lights. This is one of the very ancient festival been followed by Tamil people. This festival falls on a full moon day of Karthikai month, all the temples will have a special pooja on this auspicious day. There are also references in Sangam Tamil literature that this festival is celebrated during 200 BC.

Birth of Lord Muruga:

Lord Muruga is born from the flame of Lord Siva's third eye, the supreme power Siva who with his powers have given birth to Murugan. Murugan birth has a reason to kill a demon to save Indiran and others.

On Karthikai Deepam, Thiruvannamalai the place where Lord Shiva temple is there, on this day a huge fire lamp will be lit in top of the Tiruvannamalai hills which is visible to people in the town. This deepam is called as Mahabharanidheepam. Lots of devotees will visit this place on this day to see the deepam.

Farm Visit

After a very long time, I am now updating my farm with my recent visit to Trichy (Tiruchirappalli). I would say Trichy is a very big city and has all the qualities of the metro. I think it should be fourth largest city after Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore. I went to a farm which is very near to this place where they have cultivated more number of mango trees. I also found some neem trees and few other trees. It was my first experience visiting a very good farm house of this type. It is such a huge farm of around 200 acres of land and wide variety of plantation. I should thank my father for getting such a nice experience like this. I have seen so many new things like drip irrigation, vermicompost, dairy farm and also cattle breeding. We had spent around 4 hours in thefarm and have enjoyed a lot. Also, I have relaxed so much and good peace of mind.

They have a solar fencing around the farm which will help trespassers and other animals which come inside the farm. This solar fencing will not harm but will give a mild shock. This drip irrigation is something will help save water and channel the water properly to all the plants cultivated. There will not be any wastage of water as well. The vermicompost is a method for composting using earthworm called as vermiculture. The organic matter which is used for plants as a Biofertilizer, this will help avoiding the chemical fertilizers which are not good for health.

Jaipur has many forts and palaces which create a pleasant experience when you visit. It is worth to visit those forts and palaces which are very authentic and great experience. The places which are very important to visit are Amber fort, City palace, Jaigarh fort, hawa mahal, Jantar Mantar, Nahargarh Fort etc.

Amber Fort, located around 12 kms from Jaipur on the Delhi-Jaipur highway. The fort walls are very big and there is no possibility that anyone can climb up on those. You will see a lot of flower and nuts vendors outside the fort, where you can refresh with some nuts if you are interested. You could see the walls are almost pink in color. Few parts of the palace are not renovated yet. This fort was built sometime back in 1700’s. There are also elephants which help you to go around the palace. You will have lots of beautiful view when you reach few parts of the fort.

City palace, This palace is in the center of the city and you can reach here by taking local government buses. The palace has so many locations Maharani's Palace, Mukut Mahal, Chandra Mahal, Mubarak Mahal etc. The palace has so many extraordinary look inside and as well as outside. You have a welcome room in the palace and then a room for queens. The beautiful thing in this palace is the Minor mirror works which looks so nice and worth visiting this place.

These are the two best things which I came across in Jaipur and there are also lots of other things which made my trip so exciting. Will share more details sooner!!!!

Travelling many places is unlimited fun, but planning before travelling is very important otherwise enjoyment vanishes. My friend wanted to go to Dublin, which is in Ireland. Chennai Kapaleeswarar temple, Mylapore

This one is a very famous Siva temple in Chennai located in a place called Mylapore. The place is called mylapore because parvathi(lord shiva wife) on seeing a peacock dancing she forgot herself when she was in concert with shiva. Lord Siva got angry and cursed Parvathi for her behavior and to become a pea hen. After many years, she again joined with Lord shiva. Pea hen is called as Mylai in tamil, so the name Mylapore is used for this location in Chennai. Godness Parvathi is called as karpagavalli here in Mylapore. This place is also called as vedapuri. There is no proper evidence of when the temple was constructed and whose period it was built. The temple entrance has a big gopura and along with that there are also other three gopuras around the temple. Inside the temple there are separate gopuras for each subramanyia, ganesha, saani and also for navagragha. Almost, we visit every weekend to this temple with the family and while returning we will have breakfast in Hotel Saravana bavan. The temple also got a big pond and the water is almost around the year available in this pond.

You can see a lot Brahmin religion people in this area and they directly or indirectly do service to this temple. This temple is very near to Santhome beach. Those who have an idea to visit the temple can also visit the beach. I see lots of foreigners keep visiting this temple and this temple is always kept clean and has good car parking facility. You can also go to Giri trading shop to have look of the traditional Pooja items and other goodies.

Andaman Cellular Jail, a small review

A friend of me had recently visited Andaman and shared information about site seeing experience and some useful tips. In that a very interesting thing to know about is the Cellular jail in Andaman. Though it was constructed to arrest the freedom fighters, now the new look of the jail attracts the visitors and had become a good tourist spot. Lot of visitor’s visit this place since it is an icon for the sacrifices of the freedom fighters for Independence.

The architecture of this jail is unique British style, and looks like a cycle spokes with the seven wings. It has around 700 cells, and the center building is the place where the jailers used to watch the entire jail. It was constructed with the bricks bought from Myanmar. You could now see the new statue’s which tells the harassment in the jail. Apart from this there is also a statue’s kept for the fighters who have sacrificed their lives there in the jail.

A model of the building architect is also available in the jail museum, also the hanging room and the rope makes us to cry thinking about the sacrifices of our leaders.

In general Tamil people throughout the world will celebrate this day as an auspicious day. Going to temple and worship god and decorate house with leaves of neem and mango trees.

Vishu festival of new year for Kerala people, this is an very important day and also called as Harvest festival in few parts of Kerala. They do offerings to god called Vishukkani like rice, linen, betal leaves, yellow flowers konna and some coins made out of bell metal. Lot of special poojas happen in temples like guruvayur and sabarimala.

Pohela Boishakh is the traditional new year for Bengal people. This is celebrated both in Assam, Bengal and in Bangladesh. In this day people wear new cloths and lot of garments were sold with more discounts.

Vaisakhi or Baisakhi is the name of the festival for Punjabi new year.

When I saw about Madurai it is must that I should give details about the Meenakshi Amman Temple. This temple is one such excellence in the architecture of Pandiyas. Such a huge temple off course and huge 12 vimanams (Gopurams), according to hindu mythology Lord Siva in the form of Sundarar came to Marry Parvathi (Meenakshi). This event of marriage was being done by Lord Vishnu brother of Meenakshi. Even today this festival is been taking place in Madurai and been called as Chithirai Thiruvizha or Azhakar Thiruvizha.

Now look and the divine experience is being maintained properly. This temple also participated in the recent event for wonders of the world. Karnataka Heritage and Culture tour

I always wanted to help people by providing a lot of information about the heritage tour in Karnataka. There are so many places when it comes to heritage and cultural tour in Karnataka. A few which I loved a lot are Mysore, Hampi, Hassan, Badami and even Bangalore.

Mysore

My first view is about Mysore, which is a very close city to Bangalore and can able to cover in a day from Bangalore. There are lot of tourist attractions like Brindavan gardens, Chamundi hills, Cauvery enriched falls like Srirangapatna, Shivanasamudra falls, Tipu sultan fort, and the great Mysore palace.

Hampi

The place that nobody can even image in dreams, the Vijayanagar Empire’s prosperity is still been maintained here. You can see the art and architecture of the Vijayanagar Empire is unexplained. Vitthal Temple, lotus stay and Queen Bath are nice places to be visited. The big statue of Narashima pose of lord Vishnu was the excellent creativity.

Hassan

Belur and Helebid are the tourist places where you can see the Chennakeswara temple and Hoysaleswara temple.

Badami

Ajhole and the famous Pattadakkal have so many temples built by Chaulakyas. You may require more than two to three days going around these places.

This is the hill station in south India, 105Kms from Coimbatore. This is located in the Nilgiri hills, situated 2300 mts higher than the sea level. I would say this is the best hill station in south India, the cool climate is always been there almost all the season. The peak point in Ooty is Doddabetta at the height more than 2700 mts from the sea level. You can almost see a 360 degree view of the mountains around.

Ooty is very famous for its climate and the beauty lies within the mountains. So the summer is nearing in India, it my advice to visit Ooty now. Nilgiries is also called as Blue Mountain. You can reach here either by Bus, train or through AIR. There are buses which very frequently come from Coimbatore, also the nearest Airport is in Coimbatore only. There is lot of trains from Chennai, Bangalore to Coimbatore.

Places which you can see in OOTY are:

Ooty Lake, which is located in the center of Ooty, people can go boating and enjoy the pleasure here.

Botanical Garden, the very famous botanical garden is there in Ooty, which is a very old one and you can see lot of rare trees and flowers here.

Doddabetta view point, this is the peak point and from here you can have a telescope view of the mountains which are far away.

Kodanadu, is a famous tea estate view in Ooty. Also there is a watch tower to see the Rangaswamy peak.

Also around Ooty you have so many other places like Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary, kalhatty waterfalls, Sims park, Avalanchi and the best site seeing paradise Coonnoor. Rather than Ooty I like Coonnoor, it is little lies below Ooty but an extraordinary place to visit.

The last but not the least, the Ooty train which is very famous goes from Mettupalayam. This is also called as toy train.

Slumdog Millionaire, so many around the world have the question why this movie was awarded 8 Oscars. This post I just wanted to add my reviews about the movie, this movie which basically portrays the people who leave in slum and their life both good and bad things, are covered in this movie. Apart from this, a guy from Mumbai slum wins the title in a TV show “Who wants to be a Millionaire”, and finds his girl friend by showing his identity.

1. The original story is been found in the novel “Q & A”, written by the Vikas Swarup a Indian Foreign service man. Latter the director Danny Boyle had made the screenplay for the movie, which was done so excellently, no wonder the movie had got 8 Oscars.

2. The background sound was extra-ordinary. You should listen to those only in good theaters.

3. The Music composed for songs by A R Rehman was ultimate thing to the movie.

4. The small 3 wonders who acted in the movie had created an exceptional performance on the screen and they really take most of the sense.

5. Irrfan Khan acting was so wonderful. He comes as a police officer and thrills the opening scenes.

6. The Jamal who tells answer to the questions by sequencing with the real life situation was nicely handled in the movie.

7. Freida Pinto was the right pick as Latika, the heroine of the movie. Her character was humble and the sufferings faced are all too nicely visualized.

8. The kids who stole the food when the train was moving was so good, I like those scenes very much.

Watch the movie in the theaters and treat yourself with the bests in that.

A R Rehman, Slumdog Millionaire

The Indian music legend A.R. Rehman bagged 2 Oscar awards on 81st academy award presentation. This was a great moment for me, morning immediately after I woke up; I switched on star movies and was waiting to see this 81st academy presentation. I always used to watch this every year, but this year I was more excited to see because AR Rehman was nominated for Slumdog Millionaire. It was long time ago Satyajit Ray, who was given this award for honoring him and not for any performance. But this time I was really curious to see because first time Indians are nominated for the performance for original song, original score and for sound mixing. The program was initially started by Will smith who was announcing the names of the nominees and followed different others. And my long awaited awards started coming for Slumdog Millionaire.

The first Indian who was announced was Resul Pookutty along with Ian Tapp, Richard Pryke for their achievement in Sound Mixing. I was very curious if he get the award, after announcing the nominees, there was a small gap and then they announced the Award goes to “Slumdog Millionaire”. I was so happy to hear this. Later they have announced the names for the nominees for Original score, I was very sure that AR would make through and as I hoped AR Rehman got the award. Later for original song, again his name was nominated. This time too, again he was selected for his performance for the Jai ho song. Now, I think every Indian dreams would have come true. This was the happiest moment for any Indian and I wish all the great success for ARR to go beyond this and reach the skies.

All the credit goes for the producer and others who choose AR Rehman and giving him an opportunity in this movie. As Rehman said, let all the credit and heights go to the God.
