I found this small family of Cats while walking around the sweltering city of Sevilla, Spain. They reminded me of all the stray cats we have in Hawaii.

Hawaiian Sunset

It's hard to describe how much I love taking photos of sunsets. It's just simply one of my favorite things to do. I attempted to put a time-lapse together, but I keep forgetting how my cheap trigger works. So, I guess I'll have to try again. Darn.

The Gun Range

The debate between gun rights and gun control is still raging on in this country. I'm not a defender of guns, nor do I really want to own one. However, I understand the function of a gun in our society. I don't like it, but I understand it.

Because I wanted a better understanding, I went out to a local shooting range with a few gun owning friends of mine to see what all the fuss was about. This is what it looked like.

Sherwin is pleased.

This lady was a crack shot with her little winchester.

There were many different types of fire arms at the range. This gentlemen had a musket, that was about as accurate as a ... musket.

The gun range is a popular place. We had to wait for about 45 minutes until a spot for us to shoot from opened up.

I went to the firing range at Koko Head today. Since it was built several years ago, I've never looked past the archery range that you can see from the highway until today.

The most interesting part of the whole experience were the several women there who were crack shots. It was an interesting and reveling experience. I'll be posting more of this over the next few days.

I received many outstanding gifts this holiday season: a copy of Halo 4, a box set of Mel Brooks' greatest movies and a kite. The random gift from my dad was my favorite by far.

We took it out to Sandy Beach park for a test flight, and I found myself ignoring my age and giggling like a 12 year old as the kite soared through the air, twisting and turing in the gusts from the Pacific Ocean.

I recently procured a new 70-200mm f/4 L series lens from a friend at work. I've been waiting to nab one of these guys for years to get into more sports shoots. I took my new pride and joy out to Rocky Point on the North Shore to test it.

I took this during a Chinese New Year celebration in Chinatown a few years ago. Whenever I think of red, I think of Chinatown and all the red colored lanterns, dragons and other trinkets you can find in the market place.

HDR Monday: Kakaako Powwow

I ended up at Lex Brodie's this week after having a second tire blow out on me. It took the guys about an hour to throw the new tire on, which left me ample time to wander around Kakaako looking at the graffiti put up from the last Powwow.

This one has to be a collaboration, but it features one of my favorite street artists Angry Woebot. His angry pandas are iconic.

I love going to the Honolulu Zoo. The animals are always doing something funny or interesting (see chimpanzee), and everything is set up great to take a photo.

This guy is a Galapagos Tortoise. Don't let the photo fool you, this turtle is huge. There were a few of them that were as big as I am!

Veterans Day

On Oahu, we are surrounded by war memorials. The Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor, the Natatorium in Waikiki and Punchbowl Cemetery in Makiki.

At the western end of the crater is a beautiful memorial. There are several walls with the names of WWII vets carved into the marble, and a display of several mosaics depicting major battles that took place in the Pacific theater. It's a great place to reflect on the sacrifices our men and women in uniform make to keep us safe.

This is the Natatorium in Waikiki. It is a memorial for soldiers from Hawaii who fought and died in the first world war.

Due to 30 years of neglect, the pool closed in 1979. It is falling apart a little more everyday.

The city doesn't know what to do with it. It costs to much to fix and to much to demolish. So we just watch it deteriorate. It's sad to see how we treat certain parts of our history.

Granted I don't watch much TV, but I've still been over saturated with negative campaign ads and sign holding campaign volunteers waving to me while I sit in traffic on King Street. I'm just ready for it to end so we can get back to what's really important – blaming Barrack Obama for all of our current problems (he said sarcastically).

Camera is still in the shop ... yup. The only good part about this minor inconvenience is it forces me to look through my archives. I end up doing more spring cleaning than editing, but occasionally come across a gem like this one.

I took this shot in July from my lanai as an HDR shot, but never bothered to process the image.

What missing my camera has also given me is an opportunity to explore a little further into other people's art all over the net. I've been enjoying a lot of the creative photos that I see on coolphotoblogs.com, and the awesome stuff people make and show on Vimeo. Aside from the tremendous talent I see from videographers and photographers alike, the site also features a lot of tips and how to's for beginning video enthusiasts, such as myself.

I feel inspired. Look for some video from me in the near future.

Morning paddle

I took this when I set out at an ungodly hour to take my submission for last week's photo challenge for coolphotoblogs.com. On my way back from Lani Kai, I stopped through Hawaii Kai and hiked down to China Walls – a cliff face that overlooks the ocean.

There's always someone jumping from the cliffs into the water, fishing or fighting it out in the monstrous waves that slam into a cave on the side of the rock.

I can't help but wonder what this guy was thinking when I took his photo from about a mile away.

Sorry for the lack of photos this week. My camera is in the shop. I should be getting it back sometime next week. Until then I'll be pawing through my archives and post some hidden gems that I find.
