Hindi naman ako pala-fangirl, pero iba lang talaga kapag nakasalamuha mo ang isang couple na halos mukha na ng Philippine dancesport. Kaya noong magkrus ang landas namin nina Wilbert at Pearl (ng Philippine Dancesport Federation), may konting kilig na rin.

Ilang buwan na ang nakalipas nang ipalabas namin ang OPM Dancesport Music 5 sa ilalim ng Dancesport Watazu. Sila ang napili naming maging album cover — isang koleksyon ng Pinoy music para sa dancesport. Para sa akin bilang manager ng Watazu, desisyong pang-propesyonal iyon. Pero sa totoo lang, proud din ako na mukha nila ang kumakatawan sa proyektong ito.

Hindi inaasahan na magkikita kami nang personal. Sa tulong ng aming dancesport guru mula sa Region 9, si Raul, nagkaroon ng pagkakataon na makausap ko sila. Walang pasigaw na pagkakita, walang hagulgol. Simpleng kamayan, konting kumustahan, at pagkilala sa ambag nila sa industriya. Sapat na iyon para lalo kong hangaan ang disiplina at tatag nilang dalawa. Hindi na kailangan ng grand gesture.

This law mandates state protection, creative vouchers, and specialized grants for your craft.

This validation is fueled by explosive momentum. In 2025, the creative economy grew by 6.9%, significantly outpacing the national average. The flagship Malikhaing Pinoy Program is the primary vehicle for this transformation, ensuring that regional artists finally have a seat at the table.

"The future of the Philippine creative economy will not be built solely in major cities... It will be built in small studios, home offices, and workshops across the country by Filipino creatives who choose to take their craft seriously."

2. Stop Selling Hours, Start Charging the "Genius Tax"

One of the most dangerous traps for a creative is pricing based solely on time. You aren't just selling a logo; you are selling a visual identity that builds trust. If a design takes you two hours to execute, it is because you spent five years learning how to do it that fast. This is why you must charge an Expertise Premium, or a "Genius Tax."

To build a sustainable business, you must account for "Invisible Leaks." For instance, if your ₱50,000 laptop lasts three years, it costs you ₱1,388 every month just to own the tools of your trade.

The Math of Professional Pricing:

Subtotal (The Floor): Covers direct materials, your hourly salary (labor), and an overhead allotment (internet, software, equipment depreciation). Note: If you only charge the subtotal, you have made zero profit.
Total (The Ceiling): The Subtotal plus the Genius Tax and a Source File Fee (a separate charge for raw, editable files). This is where your business actually grows.

3. CQ is the New Currency in the Age of AI

Licensing is the gift that keeps on giving. Take my own experience: music we released on Spotify eventually reached an international production team, who licensed our tracks. Every time that music is streamed or used in events, it generates passive income.

Key 2026 Update: As of March 2026, the IPOPHL has shifted to a 100% electronic copyright registration system, allowing you to protect your "shield" from your home in the Peninsula.

5. The "Roots and Routes" of Tatak ZamPen

Zamboanga Peninsula has a "Regional Advantage" through the strategy of Roots and Routes, supported by the Tatak Pinoy (Proudly Filipino) Act (RA 11981). This law shifts our economy from "low-cost labor" to "high-value sophistication."

Last Tuesday, I had the absolute pleasure of logging into the Zampen Creative Capital Webinar Series, and honestly? I’m still riding the high.

I was invited to speak about two words that usually make creatives break out in hives: Pricing and Costing.

But here is what made this particular session so special. As I looked at the participant list, I saw names from Luzon. I saw names from Visayas. We had the whole archipelago in that Zoom room.

And that was the moment I realized: The struggle is universal, but the solution is hiding in plain sight.

The "We’re Already Making Money" Trap

I started the talk a little nervous. Here were artists, designers, and freelancers from the regions who are already booking clients. They are busy. They are getting paid. On the surface, everything looks fine.

But when we dug into the numbers, a pattern emerged. One attendee put it perfectly: “I know how much I want to earn, but I don’t know why I charge what I charge.”

They had no formal pricing structure. They were guessing.

And here is the massive truth bomb we uncovered: Just because you are making money doesn't mean you aren't losing it.

These creatives—many of whom have been working for years—were operating on instinct. They were looking at what the "market" pays and undercutting themselves by 40% just to feel safe.

The Engineer, The Lawyer, and The Genius Tax

To help explain this, I asked them to think about their friends who are engineers, lawyers, or doctors.

When an engineer designs a bridge, they don't just charge for the concrete. They charge for the calculation.
When a lawyer writes a contract, they don't just charge for the paper. They charge for the jurisprudence.
When a doctor gives a diagnosis, they don't just charge for the 5 minutes. They charge for the decade of residency.

They charge a premium for their unique skill.

So why, I asked the audience, don't we do that as creatives?

We are terrified of the "Genius Tax."

Let me explain what I mean by that.

Your "Genius Tax" (or Skill Premium) is the extra money someone pays you not for the time it took to make the logo, but for the taste it took to make it beautiful. It is the fee for the 10,000 hours you spent learning color theory, typography, and storytelling while everyone else was sleeping.

Genius Tax = The value of your unique aesthetic + Your problem-solving ability – The cost of software.

The Eye-Opener

When I put that equation up on the slide, you could feel the energy shift. One attendee from Visayas typed in the chat: "I have been charging for my time, but I have never charged for my eye. That feels like a cheat code."

It’s not a cheat code. It’s justice.

If you are a creative in Cebu, Iloilo, or Pampanga, and you are solving a business problem with your art—you are adding value. You are not a "service worker." You are a creative capitalist.

The Takeaway

If you are reading this and you recognize yourself in that story, please stop leaving money on the table.

Costing is the math (rent, software, electric bill).
Pricing is the magic (your experience, your speed, your unique style).

Don't just ask "What will the client pay?" Ask "What is my Genius Tax worth to solve their problem?"

Ngayon, ang bilis ng lahat. Naka-Reels, naka-TikTok, naka-Stories na nawawala pagkatapos ng 24 oras. Ang "blog" ngayon ay para na lang sa SEO, para sa affiliate links, para sa "personal brand." Alam mo yun? Yung feeling na kailangan mong mag-perform sa sarili mong sulat? Nakakapagod.

Pero kanina, habang nakikita ko ang lumang Blogspot ko (oo, buhay pa siya, at gaya ng dati, halo-halo pa rin ang chika), bigla akong hinila pabalik sa 2006.

Yung panahon na ang blog ay parang kwarto mong pinapasok ng mga estranghero.

Hindi uso ang "content" noon. Ang uso ay ang pagkukuwento. Hindi mahalaga kung magaling kang magsulat o hindi -may mga ka-blog ako na ang grammar ay pinagsama-sama ang English at Tagalog na parang giniling, pero mas masakit pa sa puso ang sinusulat nila kaysa sa mga published author ngayon.

Walang filter. Walang "aesthetic." Kung gusto mong umiyak sa blog dahil iniwan ka ng crush mo sa SM North Edsa, gagawin mo. Kung gusto mong magpanggap na isa kang bampira o isang babaeng naliligaw sa kabilang mundo, or magpanggap na sosyal na kasambahay parang si Inday, go lang. Minsan nga di mo gets kung yung kwento ni Mandaya ay totoo pa or fiction hanggang nag face reveal na sya kay Kulot.

Para kasi kaming nag-iiwan ng diary sa park bench, tapos may magbabasa, at imbes na husgahan ka, sasabihan ka ng: "Uy, naramdaman ko rin yan."

At ang best part? Ang Comments Section.

Grabe, hindi niyo na yata alam ‘to. Ang comments section noon ay hindi "engagement metric." Ito ang aming GC bago magkaroon ng GC. Isang araw, magko-comment ka ng "Ganyan talaga ang pag-ibig, beh." Kinabukasan, may reply na ang author ng "Oo, pero masakit pa rin." Tapos biglang may sisingit na ibang mambabasa: "Tara, coffee tayo sa may Morato?" At sa loob ng ilang oras, magkakaibigan na kayo.

Ang blog ang naging tulay. Ang pagsusulat ang naging unang usapan.

Na-miss ko yung aabangan mo ang bagong post ng kaibigan mo—hindi dahil sikat siya, kundi dahil gusto mong malaman kung anong nangyari sa nanay niya, o kung sinagot na ba siya ng katrabaho niya. Yung tipong mag-iiwan ka ng mahabang mensahe, at alam mong babasahin niya iyon ng paulit-ulit, tulad ng pagbabasa mo sa mga komento sa sarili mong blog.

Hindi ko sinasabing masama ang ngayon. Andito pa rin ako, nagsusulat pa rin (kaya nga ‘to, 'di ba?). Pero sa panahong puro "views" na lang ang labanan, na-miss ko ang panahong ang tanging puhunan namin ay oras at emosyon.

Last May 5, 2026, I had the privilege of standing before a room full of determined entrepreneurs in Bukidnon. The occasion? The 9th module of the Kapatid Mentor Me – Money Market Encounter (KMME-MME) Program, hosted by DTI-Bukidnon.

The topic was close to my heart: "Market-Driven Innovation: Product Development."

I didn't want to just talk. I wanted them to think differently. So we started with a simple but powerful question: Are you building what you love, or what your market actually needs?

We explored the sweet spot where passion meets demand. We broke down the essential elements of a winning product idea—concept, design, and a mindset that treats innovation as a habit, not an accident.

But theory only goes so far.

That's why I had them do a worksheet activity on self-mapping and gap analysis. It wasn't busywork. It became their mirror—showing exactly where they stood and what gaps needed filling.

Then came my favorite part: one-on-one consultations. Each mentee sat with me, worksheet in hand, and we talked real business. Personalized feedback. Honest recommendations. Mentoring tailored to their specific struggles and growth areas.

No generic advice. Just practical, actionable steps.

Walking out of that session, I felt the same thing I always hope for—shift. These mentees didn't just learn about product development. They learned to listen to their market first. And that changes everything.

What struck me most was the hunger to learn. These weren't just participants. They were builders—eager to refine, reimagine, and rebrand their local treasures.

By the end of the session, I saw clearer concepts, brighter eyes, and a shared determination to put Lanao del Norte's products on a bigger map.

Short session. Long impact. That's the goal.

My Take on the ACT Session for Zamboanga del Sur MSMEs

Some workdays feel like a blur of tasks. Others feel like impact. Yesterday, April 14, 2026, was the latter.

I spent the whole day at the DTI-ZDS Conference Room in Pagadian City for the Assessment, Consultation, and Triage (ACT) Session under the One Town One Product (OTOP) Next Gen Program. Sixteen MSMEs from across Zamboanga del Sur showed up ready to level up. And I showed up ready to listen, challenge, and guide.

The morning kicked off with an orientation by Trade Promotion Officer Sherin K. Francisco, who laid out the OTOP framework clearly—what's possible, what's waiting for these entrepreneurs if they take the right steps. Then it was my turn.

I facilitated a session called “Branding in the Digital Age.” I didn't just talk theory. I wanted these MSME owners to walk away understanding that branding isn't a logo—it's a promise. It's how you survive the noise of the internet. It's how you make a customer pick your product off a shelf full of strangers.

But the real magic happened in the afternoon.

I sat down with each participant for one-on-one consultations. Tailored. Specific. No generic advice. We talked about their actual products, their actual labels, their actual struggles. I gave technical guidance on brand identity—how to clarify their message, sharpen their visuals, and position themselves with confidence.

Alongside me, product designer Sarah Marie A. Tabaculde of Sampixels Digital Marketing Services worked her magic on product presentation, packaging, and label design. Watching her transform rough ideas into professional concepts was like seeing a sculptor find the statue inside the stone.

By the end of the day, we had identified 40 products needing further interventions—logo enhancements, label improvements, better compliance. Forty opportunities to turn local products into market-ready contenders.

Standing there in that conference room, watching MSME owners take notes with genuine fire in their eyes, I felt proud. Not of myself—but of them. They showed up, asked tough questions, and left with actionable next steps.

This is why I do what I do. Not for applause. For the moment a small business owner realizes: I can compete. I can win.

First Look, First Feel: Designing the Future of Tourism in Ramon Magsaysay

There are moments in this line of work when you have to stop, breathe, and remind yourself: this is why I love what I do.

Today was one of those moments.

I recently had the honor of being brought on board by Mayor Margie to help redesign a local tourism attraction here in Ramon Magsaysay. It's a project I'm deeply passionate about—because tourism isn't just about beautiful spots. It's about storytelling, sustainability, and giving communities a reason to thrive.

But you can't redesign what you don't truly understand.

So when I was invited today to visit Bongga Mountain Resort—to get a glimpse, feel the place, and experience it firsthand—I didn't hesitate. You can't plan from behind a desk. You have to walk the ground, breathe the air, and see through the eyes of the visitors who will come.

And let me tell you: Bongga Mountain Resort has potential. Big potential.

From the moment I arrived, I started taking mental notes—the views, the flow of the space, the little details that make a guest feel welcome, and the gaps where a little creativity could go a long way. I didn't come with a fixed blueprint. I came with an open mind and a notebook full of questions.

Mayor Margie and the team were incredibly generous with their time, sharing their vision and their hopes for what this place could become. Listening to them, I felt the same fire I always feel when a community truly believes in its own future.

This project isn't just about renovating a resort. It's about creating a destination that locals will be proud of and tourists will travel for. It's about jobs, livelihood, and putting Ramon Magsaysay on the map—not as a passing dot, but as a must-visit.

Today was Day One of really listening and learning. The real work starts now.

Bridging the Digital Gap: My Talk on Module 5 for Camiguin’s KMME Mentees

I’ve sat through countless training sessions. And I’ve walked away from too many wondering, “Was any of that truly useful?” So when I stepped up to talk to the Kapatid Mentor ME (KMME) mentees of Camiguin on Module 5: Digitalization, I made myself a promise. This wouldn’t be just another lecture about buzzwords. This would be a toolkit they could actually use.

The session was held as part of DTI’s flagship mentorship program, developed in partnership with the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship – Go Negosyo. Since its launch in 2016, KMME has helped thousands of micro and small enterprises across the country upscale through improved access to mentorship, money, and market. For Batch 2025, 15 entrepreneurs from Camiguin—alongside mentees from Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental—were officially inducted into the program, marking a significant step for the island province’s business community .

Module 5 is, in my opinion, where the rubber meets the road. It's no secret that digitalization isn't optional anymore—it's survival. As DTI Misamis Oriental Provincial Director Jesusa Abear aptly put it during a recent forum, "The way of doing things is evolving, especially in business, especially now with digitalization." That single sentence captures why I poured my energy into this talk.

I wanted these mentees to walk away with more than just notes. I wanted them to walk away with clarity: What does digital transformation actually look like for a small enterprise in Camiguin? Where do you start when resources are tight? How do you choose the right tools without getting overwhelmed?

We talked about practical, doable steps. We explored real-world examples of MSMEs that successfully pivoted to digital platforms—some right there in Region 10. We discussed how digitalization isn't about expensive software, but about smart, incremental changes that build momentum.

But more than the technical side, I focused on the mindset shift. Digitalization can feel intimidating, especially for entrepreneurs who’ve built their businesses the traditional way. My message was simple: you don’t have to be a tech wizard. You just have to be willing to learn, adapt, and take that first step.

Standing there in front of those eager faces, I felt a deep sense of responsibility. These weren't just participants. These were dreamers, builders, and job creators. And if my talk helped even one of them see digitalization as an opportunity rather than a hurdle, then it was time well spent.

That's exactly what I felt on March 23, 2026, as we officially kicked off the Capability Building on Institutional and Organizational Management for CFIDP Beneficiaries Phase 1 (Batch 1) at Hotel Guillermo in Pagadian City.

This five-day training, running until March 27, is all about equipping our CFIDP beneficiaries with the tools they need to manage and sustain their Shared Processing Facilities (SPF). We're talking operational efficiency, financial sustainability, and regulatory compliance—the backbone of any lasting enterprise.

The morning began with a warm welcome from Mr. Julito B. Cordova, TS II / Project Officer, who reminded everyone just how vital organized cooperatives are to agricultural growth in our region. His words set the perfect tone.

Then came my turn.

As the facilitator for one of the major sessions, I had the privilege of diving deep into organizational strengthening and governance. I didn't just lecture—I made sure every participant left with a crystal-clear understanding of their specific roles and responsibilities as SPF beneficiaries. Because let's face it: good intentions aren't enough. Clear roles, strong governance, and shared accountability are what turn a facility into a lasting success.

Standing there in front of these dedicated individuals, I felt a genuine sense of purpose. This wasn't just another training. This was groundwork. Real, solid, impactful groundwork.

Let’s be honest—plenty of planning sessions feel like ticking a box. Time goes in, paperwork comes out, and nothing really changes. So when we gathered for the 2026 ZAMPEN Creatives Industry Assessment & Planning on March 11, 2026, via Zoom, I quietly hoped this would be different. Truly different.

I am happy to say: it was.

The session brought together DTI ZCO Provincial Director Grace DC Aduca (representing Assistant Regional Director Maridel D. Dengal), along with regional and provincial focal persons and dedicated industry stakeholders. We didn't just talk in circles. We rolled up our virtual sleeves.

PD Aduca opened with sharp, encouraging remarks. Then we dove deep—reviewing the 2025 Creatives Industry Cluster Situation, identifying real constraints, and spotting genuine opportunities within our industry value chain. Wea C. Bohol from the PCIDC Secretariat gave an energizing presentation on Create2Connect. And crucially, we moved into action planning, presenting concrete outputs and agreements.

Dapitan City: National Arts Month

Earlier this month pa namin niluluto ang evennt na to along with Ms Kat and LGU Dapitan.

I was in CDO when Ms. Kat called me for this whole month celebration.

We had series of webinar to support the local creatives of Dapitan City.

At dahil advocate tayo, hindi tayo tatanggi sa mga ganitong invitation lalo't makikinabang ang ating mga stakeholders sa Region 9.

And today is the culmination.

The past 3 weeks was a series of webinar.

Ang today, I have to be physically present for the culmination.

The event kicked off with a Film Pitching with Director Bon Labura.

In the afternoon, a ribbon cutting ceremony with Mayor Belen Uy to formally mark the opening of visual arts display followed by another creative talk with a local creative and content creator from Dipolog, Kalokal PH.

It was a fun and engaging event.

I'm so glad the audience were extremely engaged and interested in everything creative.

Pero higit sa lahat, natutuwa ako na unti-unti, naipapalaganap na natin ang creative movement sa region.

Unti unti na din nagkakaron ng kulay ang ating mga pagod at walang katapusang FGD at meeting with the creative giants.

Guiding the Next Generation: My Mentoring Session with Young Agri-Preneurs

This past week, I had the privilege of stepping into a mentor role for an incredible group of young visionaries.

The Young Farmers Challenge Regional Project Management Team successfully conducted a Coaching and Mentoring Session for the National Finalists on February 17–18, 2026, right here in Pagadian City. These bright minds are gearing up to represent our region in the upcoming National Competition, and my job was to help them get there.

Over those two productive days, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work. Watching these young agri-entrepreneurs refine their presentations and strengthen their business concepts was truly inspiring. My goal was simply to empower them—to boost their confidence so they can step onto that national stage and shine.

Seeing their passion for agriculture and innovation gives me so much hope for the future. Together, we aren't just prepping for a competition; we are cultivating excellence, leadership, and a new generation of farming heroes.

On to the Nationals!

For the past 8 years since I'm back in town, consistent yung attendance ko sa alumni homecoming.

Una dahil ginawa nila akong President ng alumni kulto at pangalawa, need ng tulong nung mga kulto leaders na sumunod sa akin.

Kaya heto na naman ako.

But this was different.

Nasa lima lang ata ng ka-batch ko ang dumating.

Yung iba di ko nakita.

Yung iba, baka takot lumapit.

Dahil busy ako.

Unsociable ako today.

Instead na makikipag hi, hello, nasa tech booth ako.

I volunteered to make the homecoming LIVE visa sattelite.

Kaya ok na ko.

Next year ayoko na.

Ayoko na maglasing.

Lalo na pag mag-isa.

Natapos ang program ng 11pm.

Tapos na din trabaho ko.

Kunting paalam lang sa organizers.

Tapos di ko na alam nangyari.

Pag gising ko, nasa kwarto na ko.

Tapos 3 days bago ako lumabas ng bahay.

Last month, while going around Zamboanga del Sur, I made a promise to the coconut farmers of Sumalig in Tambulig that aatend ako sa Christmas party nila. And so I did.

Excited ako.

Kasama ko yung team ko that gives them training months before about pricing and costing, product innovation and more through DTI CFIDP.

Pero.

Eto pala ang sasakyan papunta sa kanila.

Di ko na pinost yug video kung pano magmura walang holding onto your balls.

Pero nakakatakot.

Walang arm yung bangka.

Ewan, anong tawag dun.

Pero katig ata.

Bandong tawag nila.

Pero sobrang saya.

Masaya sila kasama.

And their product, amazing!

When Breakthroughs Happen Beyond the Office Walls

So, the other day, I got to hang out with the awesome staff of DTI Zamboanga del Sur—and the whole point was to just… let loose a little. What started as goofy icebreakers somehow turned into actual moments of “Hey, I remember why I like you people.” Laughter did its magic and tore down those invisible office walls. Some silly games reminded everyone that teamwork isn’t just a buzzword. And then we had real talks—the kind where you actually reflect on stuff, both as a person and as a team.

You could literally feel the vibe shift. People started actually listening. Coworkers began looking at each other like “Oh right, we’re in this together,” not just “that person from accounting.” It hit home that great organizations aren’t just built on fancy strategies and Excel sheets—they’re built on trust and genuine connections.

Honestly? Some of the best progress doesn’t happen in stuffy meetings, long reports, or perfectly polished slide decks. It happens when everyone steps away from their desks, shares a good laugh, plays a few ridiculous games, and has honest conversations—no job titles, no pressure, no “let’s circle back on that.”

That’s exactly what I got to guide them through. Light activities turned into reconnection. Laughter broke down walls. Games brought back that “we’re a team” feeling. And open chats gave space for real reflection—as individuals and as a crew.

In those moments, people listened better. Colleagues saw each other as partners chasing the same goal, not just office neighbors. A solid reminder that strong teams run on relationships, not just process docs.

These experiences matter—especially when work feels like a never-packed suitcase. When you give a team permission to pause, reset, and just be, they come back with clearer heads, fresh energy, and a better sense of shared “let’s do this.” Productivity gets better not because you push harder, but because people actually feel connected—to the work, and to each other.

From El Salvador to Bukidnon

Some friends came in from Manila.

Ang what better way to introduce them first timers sa Mindanao than Bukidnon.

Pero prior to that, we needed a space near the airport and El Salvador was just fine.

So fine we did.

We checked in at Crown Peak Resort for a night.

Ganda ng unit. Can fit in 12.

May entertainment room at mag sariling pool.

The next day though, we had to be at Dahilan.

So ayun.

Off the record muna ang mga chika.

Igniting my hospitality roots at Panaghiusa 2025

I was invited by NMSCST College of Business Management to speak infront of their hospitality students.

Yung tipong, kelangan mo silang ma convince na working in hospitality is not just well ironed suit and mini skirts but a real job that would eventually give them wrinkles.

Pero dito tayo sa angle ng mastering social media marketing in hospitality.

Hindi nyo naitanong, pero my solid background in hospitality not only covers reservations but also sales and marketing.

Kaya this talk is very personal to me.

It reminded me of the smell of coffee at the training room.

It brings me back to my training days in Singapore.

It transports me back to my familiarity trips to Asia and Australia.

Pero sempre pa low profile lang tayo.

Baka mahulaan nila edad natin.

Kaya, super thank you sa friend ko na si Dr. Sonnylyn for making me part of this event.

Sana may natutunan kayo sa akin.
