On Fillmore:: Extended Vacation

On Fillmore is the duo of bassist Darin Gray and percussionist Glenn Kotche, and their latest record, Extended Vacation, is out now on Dead Oceans. The album sees On Fillmore reconvening for seven rhythm oriented movements working from bass and vibraphone with an intermingling of sound collage, bird sounds, shaped noise, and elsewhere instrument. The result is a work of mood, that mostly reigns as day-dreamy, though the shifts to the more ominous, as seen on the later title track, are what gives the album its best character.

DJ Hell teams up with Bryan Ferry

DJ Hell and Bryan Ferry come together on Hell’s “U Can Dance,” an interpretation of an unreleased Bryan Ferry song. Hell has been riding the success of the excellent double album Teufelswerk. Ferry has been busy recording a new album, performing in places as far as Siberia, and opening up the Cannes Film Festival. This all started in 2006 when Hell dropped in to meet Ferry at his West London studio. At first they discussed Hell remixing an old Roxy Music track, and then it turned into “U Can Dance.” They had similar impressions of one another—Hell: “I was impressed by his aura and his look,” Ferry: “He impressed us with his sophistication and charm.”

Regrets & Brunettes forge At Night You Love Me

Dear Major Labels:: You’re F*cked

This was on Current.com and I couldn’t resist re-posting a video bitching about major labels disabling embedded videos, among other things. I as well have been puzzled about such backwards practices in the past and how it makes no sense. I really love how majors make their bands get ridiculous $500 haircuts so they can appear on MTV shows. All that said, the “indie” VS. “major” argument is getting old and cooked. There are a bunch of “independents” with consistently good taste, but that isn’t the whole story. In as much as anything this decade we’ve ended up with more “regurgitated” trash to sift through as result of the current ease of startup independents and cheap recording. And on another note – how many times have you seen a new label and thought “damn, they must have some major cash.” There is a good chance you were right. These days “truth” is the most elusive thing out there. I haven’t got a clue.
