The Soft Boys reissue Underwater Moonlight and A Can of Bees

The Soft Boys formed in 1976, dissolved in 1981, and reformed for a 21st anniversary tour and reunion album in 2001. Now, comes another round of reissues. The Soft Boys’ Underwater Moonlight is being released in its 10-song original form by Yep Roc, on CD and 180 gram vinyl. The reissue features all the bonus tracks as digital downloads free with purchase. The vinyl release is the first ever reissue of the LP in its original form. ‘Underwater Moonlight’ has long been considered a classic record, “Big Star and us were the rickety bridge between the Byrds and REM”, says former Soft Boys’ main man Robyn Hitchcock.

Additionally, the first Soft Boy’s album, A Can of Bees is also being released with similar bonus downloads. “A red-hot poker up the arse of rock music” was how Julian Cope once described this album. The vinyl version of Bees is the first ever reissue of the LP in any form.

George Asimakos (guitar), Chris Ware (bass), and Lee Corum (drums) recorded the EP with Patrick Klem at Klemfastic Sound (Shipping News, Raveonettes, Fin Fang Foom, Polvo). The band are currently recording their debut full-length album at the same location.

Jaill’s That’s How We Burn opens with the strut of steady drum and stirring guitar on “The Stroller,” setting the stage for one of the summer’s more memorable works. The quick loosening of lyrics on “Everyone’s Hip” immerses the listener into a world of oppositions with smooth pop melodies and often brasher guitar lines that come to define the Milwaukee group’s pop sensibility. The album is solid throughout whether that be the acoustic foundations of “Summer Mess” or the tinted melodic flourishes of “Thank Us Later,” with the latter tempting the listener to sing “Love Potion #9″ over the intro. Eleven tracks that bring a joy unmatched by the latest Arcade Fire album or any of those currently talked too much about wall of sound bands.
