Advantages of Learning a Second Language

By Karyn DePari

Raising bi-lingual children is a growing practice for new parents across the country. Here in Las Vegas, bi-lingual parents know the importance of speaking to their children in their native tongue…and at a young age. Most likely their parents reacted differently and encouraged them to perfect their English. As the mother of two teenage girls, both learning a foreign language in school, for the first time, I’m concerned with their ability to do this at such a late stage. I wish I had known how early exposure would’ve helped them, and how easy it is to become fluent in a second language if you start young. I watch as more and more parents become aware of the importance of teaching their child a second language.

Learning a second language is advantageous, and learning it young is easier according to research. As the future marketplace becomes more global, employers will quickly weed out mono-linguals as serious job competitors. Savvy parents are even targeting specific languages for their children with this in mind. French, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish, are languages useful in world banking, world trade and homeland occupations. Bi-lingual adults will always have an edge when competing for employment in the future job market.

Becoming bi-lingual is not just good for career endeavors, but good for the brain. Studies show that children, who learn a second language, perform better on standardized tests and SAT’s. They are great problem solvers, because they understand a variety of perspectives. They develop an understanding and tolerance for other cultures, making them more compassionate. They become better thinkers. They make efficient use of both sides of the brain.

I was once told that children don’t “learn” language, they develop language. Adults learn language, meaning we use our decoding skills, we translate, we memorize, and we do all these very complex analytical processes that make learning a new language a struggle. Children absorb language. They are born with a brain primed for developing language. That part of the brain is fully developed from teen to adult, so learning a new language is possible, but different.

What is known as the “optimal window” for learning a new language occurs from birth to approximately 10 years of age. At this time the part of the brain that develops language is still forming. If there are particular sounds that an adult has not been exposed to, the ease in which those sounds can be recreated in adulthood decreases significantly. A good example is the “L” sound, which there is none, in the Japanese language. A Japanese adult will have difficulty learning English with correct pronunciation of the “L”, because it is not contained in the Japanese vocabulary. Therefore it is not stored in their brain. If a Japanese baby listens to the English language, he/she will able to pronounce the “L” sound, later in life. This is why children who learn a second language obtain perfect “accent” free pronunciation. They are truly little language experts.

My daughters’ brains are well beyond that window of opportunity. They both are learning and doing well. However, I know now, that fabulous French accent could’ve been a little more natural, had they started years ago.

What’s the Word? Kidz Matter

Every day the students who attend a “Kidz Matter school” are asked the question … “What’s the word?” A “Kidz Matter school” is a school that has implemented the Kidz Matter Victory program to enhance their character education or life skills program. The program is making a real difference in the behavior of students; and teachers and administrators are excited to keep asking, “What’s the word?”

The “word” is the life skill of the month. It could be Respect, Integrity, Empathy, Self-Control, Courtesy, Goals or any other life skill. The program is designed to focus on a single life skill word throughout the month, teaching the students not only the meaning of the life skill, but also how to apply it daily. Each month the “word” is launched through an assembly. In the classroom, teachers briefly discuss the life skill, and then they recognize and reward positive behavior by placing the students name on the Victory poster. The month ends with a Victory assembly where students and classrooms are selected and rewarded for displaying the life skill.

The assemblies are full of energy, the teachers, school staff, and Kidz Matter Heroes are all fantastic, but the real learning of the life skills come from asking “what’s the word?”

You can visit the Kidz Matter website or find us on Facebook to get additional resources on life skills and the at-home Victory program. www.MyKidzMatter.com .

Understanding Strep Throat

By Dr. Maria Martinez

Strep throat is an infection of the throat caused by a bacterium called streptococcus. It is transmitted via the saliva or secretions from person to person. Most frequently it occurs in children between 5-15 years of age. Babies and toddlers rarely get strep, but it is possible especially if they have been exposed to someone in the household with it or if there is an outbreak at their daycare or preschool. The winter months are the most likely time for sore throats and Strep to occur.

Three to five days after the person has been exposed they experience symptoms. These symptoms can be sore throat, fever, headaches, stomach aches and they can appear all of a sudden. Others symptoms may also include coughing and congestion. In addition, they may experience difficulty swallowing, swollen enlarged tonsils and lymph nodes that at times you can feel on the side of the neck, joint pains, and red swelling of the groin area. Rashes can also be seen in some cases. Usually it is a fine red rash all over the body that feels like sandpaper. Other times the patient may present with hives. Whether the symptoms are severe or not depends on the individual patient.

Not all sore throats are due to Strep throat. Throat infections can be due to viruses or bacteria. The one most commonly treated is the one caused by streptococcus, which is the most common bacteria causing throat infections. Treatments are often aimed at preventing a secondary illnesses caused by these bacteria. The most notorious is rheumatic fever, which is an illness that affects the heart and cannot be cured. It is also known to affect the kidneys.

Strep throat is diagnosed with a throat swab that is tested for these bacteria. There are two tests available – a rapid strep test and a routine culture. The rapid strep test is positive in about 85% of the cases. If the rapid strep test is negative then a routine culture should be done. Strep throat usually gets better on its own, but antibiotics are used to prevent the complications mentioned above. The patient should take the whole course of antibiotics to prevent the appearance of rheumatic fever or recurrence of strep. If he or she stops taking the antibiotics too soon, the bacteria can remain in the throat and the symptoms may return. If your child has recurrent strep throat, speak with your pediatrician.

See your physician if you have symptoms of strep throat. One aims to start treatment within 9 days of symptoms starting. A person is considered contagious until 24-48 hours after the antibiotics have been initiated. Children should not go back to school until they have been taking the antibiotics for at least 24 hours. Once on medications for about 48 hours dispose of old toothbrushes since these bacteria can live there and re-infect the individual. If there is no improvement of the symptoms in 48-72 hours contact your physician.

You can help your child feel better while he or she has strep throat by giving them plenty of fluids in addition to the antibiotics. Sometimes warm things like soup may help. Other times the child may take cold liquids or popsicles aiming to decrease the pain. Acetaminophen, generic of Tylenol, may also be used for the fever. Also, get plenty of rest since this is important for the body to recuperate.

Dr Maria Martinez is a Pediatrician at Good Night Pediatrics which provides all-night urgent care for children every night of the year from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m.

It’s Girl Scout Cookie time!

Whether Girl Scout Cookies find you at home, through a friend, or in front of a grocery store, most of you will hear that very special phrase, “Would you like to buy a box of Girl Scout cookies?” As you stock up on your Thin Mints and Carmel deLites, have you ever stopped to consider how your purchase truly impacts the girl?

Most of us are happy to have our yummy treats and glad that the financial transaction supports leadership programs for girls. But most of us give little thought to how the process of selling the cookies affects the girl. Consider this, many successful business women today say they got their start selling Girl Scout Cookies.

As girls go through the cookie selling process they begin to discover: Goal setting, Decision making, Money management, People skills, and Business ethics

So the next time you sit down to enjoy a box of Thin Mints, know that the girl who sold those to you is discovering self-reliance as she funds her own activities in Girl Scouting. Whether she chooses to attend summer camp, participate in educational programs, donate service and money to her community or travel the world to participate in service projects; she is learning valuable leadership skills.

As girls gain these life experiences, they apply them to our community to help make the world a better place. So when a Girl Scout asks you to buy her cookies, remember you’re saying hello to tomorrow’s business leaders.

Cookies are available through March 4, 2012, and proceeds remain in Southern Nevada. Get connected to a girl in your community by placing cookie orders at girlscoutsnv.org .

Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada is the preeminent leadership development organization for girls – all girls – where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and life skills for success in the real world.

Eating Disorders Among Boys

by Icia Reid-Sandulak

For many years it was thought that eating disorders were exclusively associated with girls. Due to research in the 1990’s, the tables turned and a little more emphasis was placed on boys with eating disorders. By 2007 there were many studies popping up with regards to the urgency to understand the implications that eating disorders has on boys. Experts are gaining ground in wanting to gain knowledge and address the growing concerns with the number of males that are affected by this disorder.

With the growing number of boys now experiencing anorexia and bulimia parents should heed the many warning signs. In the case of anorexia, the adolescent boy may refuse to eat and may even deny hunger, or may often not want to eat in public places. The individual may check the mirror for perceived flaws, and may embark on wearing baggy or layered clothing. Bulimia on the other hand has its own set of warning signs such as eating to the point of discomfort or pain. The afflicted youth may often consume high fat or sweet foods. The individual may also display self-induced vomiting, the use of laxatives, or may perform excessive exercises. Emphasis and unhealthy focus on body shape and weight, often times leads to excessive negative body image. Bulimia causes damaged teeth and gums. With binge eating becoming a common problem among boys, there is a need for support and education for the youths and their families.

Icia Reid-Sandulak , has been working with children for the last 20 years. She has a background in Social Work and is the mother of four children, one son and three daughters. Presently, she is the director of Apple Grove Foster Care Agency and invites anyone who aspires to be a foster parent to contact the office for information.

Get On-Board With Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour

Comedy-magician and Harrah’s, Las Vegas Headliner Mac King is preparing to embark on Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour: Nevada Reading Week 2012, benefiting Clark County READS, the literacy initiative of The Public Education Foundation. The tour kicks-off with a book drive hosted by the Las Vegas Wranglers hockey team on Feb. 17 and 18. King will hand-deliver the books to five local elementary schools during Nevada Reading Week on Feb. 27 – Mar. 2.

Donations of three or more new or gently used elementary-school aged books can be made at the home games on Feb. 17 and 18 beginning at 7:05 p.m. at the Orleans Arena. Those who donate a minimum of three books will receive two free tickets to The Mac King Comedy Magic Show at Harrah’s Las Vegas and one ticket to a future Wranglers game on either Mar. 18, 20 or 27 (limit one per person).

Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour – Mac King and Las Vegas Wranglers’ mascot The Duke pose with the more than 2,000 books collected at the 2011 inaugural book drive.

Additionally, Mac King will be on-site to collect donations, meet and greet with fans and sign autographs during the game on Feb. 17.

“I want to say thank you to the Las Vegas community and fans of The Las Vegas Wranglers who helped to make last year’s Nevada Reading Week tour a success. Because of your generosity we have been able to touch thousands of children’s lives, but there’s still more work to be done,” said King. “That’s why I’m calling upon my pals once again to continue to support literacy in Las Vegas. With your help, we can change the lives of even more children.”

Nevada Reading Week

During Nevada Reading Week, Feb. 27 – Mar. 2, Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour will be making stops at five local elementary schools where King will personally deliver books collected from the book drive. During the tour’s scheduled stops King will also perform tricks from his show and read a few short stories.

In the past, King has visited local elementary schools to perform some of his magic tricks and to engage the students by reading a few short stories. At the end of each visit he donates an autographed copy of his book to the school library.

The insatiable curiosity of Curious George – the little monkey who has captured the imagination and hearts of millions of children and adults for nearly 70 years – comes to life in Las Vegas on February 4, 2012, when the interactive exhibition Curious George: Let’s Get Curious! opens at Lied Discovery Children’s Museum.

Based on the familiar characters in H.A. and Margret Rey’s classic stories published by Houghton Mifflin, the Curious George exhibition inspires young children’s natural curiosity as they explore early science, math and engineering through hands-on interactive play. The immersive environment takes place in the neighborhood where Curious George lives with his friend, The Man with the Yellow Hat. Visitors will recognize familiar characters and places featured in the classic stories and the television series produced by Imagine Entertainment on PBS KIDS.

The exhibition’s content is based on educational standards developed by Minnesota Children’s Museum and an expert advisory panel to the PBS KIDS series, as well as national science and math standards for young children. Designed, developed and built by Minnesota Children’s Museum in partnership with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group, Curious George: Let’s Get Curious! began a five-year, 20-city tour of children’s museums across the country in September 2007.

Curious George: Let’s Get Curious! will be on display in the Cultural Gallery at Lied Discovery Children’s Museum from February 4 through May 13, 2012. The exhibition is sponsored locally by National Security Technologies, LLC and Cox Communications.

For 21 years, Lied Discovery Children’s Museum has been Las Vegas’ favorite family fun and education destination. Located at 833 Las Vegas Blvd. North in downtown Las Vegas, the museum features more than 100 interactive exhibits based on science, art and culture for children and families. In late 2012, the museum will relocate and become the all-new DISCOVERY Children’s Museum at the Donald W. Reynolds Discovery Center in Symphony Park.

A Family-Owned Summer Camp: Our Unlikely Story

In 1999, in a studio above a garage, we began with a simple mission. Concerned with growing a better world for our children, we set out to ignite the internalDrive in our students. Today, more students enroll at iD Tech Camps than any other tech camp. Nobody has dedicated their lives, passion and focus to this business like our team. We have a commitment to deliver the best. This is the iD Difference.

We strive daily to realize the core values that guide us:

Inspiration: Ignite new interests and ideas while satisfying current curiosities

Determination: Encourage empowerment and personal expression through technology

Education: High-caliber, hands-on instruction exploring relevant software and curriculum

Awareness: Illustrate how technology can impact our world through STEM principles

Leadership: Develop strong technical and life skills that extend past “camp”

We set expectations high – your children deserve that. It’s time to expect more. If you choose just one summer program, we hope you seriously consider iD. Welcome! We also invite you to read a letter from the president of internalDrive, Inc.

The Launch in 1999

In a tiny studio nestled in the mountains surrounding California’s Silicon Valley, our family met to address the pressing need of technology education for kids and teens. Our solution: to present the finest technology instruction, delivered in a summer camp setting and held at prestigious universities. Since our inception in 1999, managing quality and safety has been paramount. Our coveted leadership position in the summer camp industry is a responsibility we don’t take lightly.

Celebrating 14 seasons in 2012!

As a distinguished family-owned and operated company, our summer computer camps are widely respected for paying close attention to the details YOU care about: risk management, hand-selected staff, personalized instruction, and new friendships forged in a stimulating, collegiate setting. We blend the nostalgia of traditional summer camps with our visionary technology programs. Our company, internalDrive, comprises the flagship iD Tech Camps brand, along with the iD Gaming Academy, iD Visual Arts Academy, iD Programming Academy and iD OnSite.

Program Overview

iD Tech Camps provides week-long day and overnight technology camps for students ages 7-17, and teen academies for ages 13-18. Students may register for one or several weeks. You’ll find us at the most distinguished universities including Stanford, UCLA, Northwestern, and MIT. Each iD location boasts hand-selected and personally-trained staff, a unique campus experience, and stimulating courses delivered in small “clusters” with a max of 8 students per instructor. Each summer camp season is loaded with brand new real-world curriculum and technology inspired by the biggest names–Adobe®, Apple®, HP®, Microsoft®. We’re not just a computer camp, science camp or technology camp; we’re so much more! Please also feel free to call toll-free at 1-888-709-TECH (8324) to speak with us personally.

Imagination Movers “Rock-o-Matic” tour to visit Las Vegas March 16

Rich, Scott, Dave and Smitty – of the Emmy-winning Disney Channel TV series “Imagination Movers” – will be bringing their high-octane rock concert to Las Vegas, and it’s an event the whole family can enjoy. The performance will take place on Friday, March 16 at 7 p.m. at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets start at $24 and are on sale now.

The Movers were the highest-rated and most popular live family act of 2011. The key to the Movers’ appeal is they combine danceable power pop songs with extremely catchy choruses and a knack for inspiring audience participation. Throw in a heaping helping of onstage silliness and you’ve got a recipe for a live musical event that will truly engage the littlest of kids along with their older siblings, parents and grandparents. It doesn’t hurt that the Movers pepper their live shows with musical references to their many inspirations, including U2, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack Johnson, the Beastie Boys and all sorts of classic and modern rockers.

The Imagination Movers began in 2003 as a rock band for kids in New Orleans and have grown into the stars of a hit television series seen in over 55 countries on the Disney Channel. On the show, the Movers star as four friends who work together in the Idea Warehouse to solve problems through creativity and teamwork.

Patrons can purchase tickets for the show by calling The Smith Center for the Performing Arts at (702) 749-2000 or by visiting www.thesmithcenter.com.

Get all essential vitamins and minerals every day. Women need a lot more iron when pregnant. And sometimes it’s hard to get enough by eating alone. Ask your doctor if you should be taking a daily prenatal vitamin or multivitamin.

Get 400 micrograms (or 0.4 mg) of folic acid daily. Getting enough folic acid (or folate) reduces the chances of some birth defects. Some women eat lots of certain foods and others take multivitamins to get enough folic acid during pregnancy

Eat a healthy diet. Load up on fruits, vegetables, and whole-grains (such as whole-wheat breads or crackers). Eat plenty of calcium-rich foods (such as non-fat or low-fat yogurt, milk, and broccoli) that your baby needs for strong bones and teeth. If you live in areas where fruits and vegetables aren’t in season, frozen vegetables are a good option. Avoid eating a lot of fatty foods (such as butter and fatty meats). Choose leaner foods when you can (such as skim milk, chicken and turkey without the skin, and fish).

Gain a healthy, not excessive amount of weight. Research shows that women who gain more than the recommended amount during pregnancy have an elevated risk of obesity. On average, 25 to 30 pounds is a healthy weight gain over the 40 weeks of pregnancy. Check with your doctor to find out how much weight you should gain during pregnancy.

Get enough sleep (try to get seven to nine hours every night). Aches, pains, anxiety and bathroom runs keep many pregnant women awake at night. To get some zzzzs, eat any large meals at least three hours before going to bed, get some easy exercise (like walking) and avoid long naps during the day. Sleep on your left side and use pillows between your legs and under your belly to help you get comfortable.

De-stress. If you can, control the stress in your life. When it comes to work and family, figure out what you can really do. Set limits with yourself and others. Don’t be afraid to say NO to requests for your time and energy.

Is Your Child a Target of Bullying?
Bullying is a serious issue that affects nearly every school in our nation. It is a behavior that knows no boundaries of class, race, gender, size of school or age. Bullies tend to target children who are considered “different”. Don’t miss this class full of strategies to help families cope with and prevent bullying.
When: Wednesday, January 4, 6-8pm
Where: Nevada PEP

IEP Clinic
Nevada PEP offers Individualized Education Program (IEP) Clinics each month. Clinics include a brief overview of the IEP process and a question & answer session. Please bring your child’s IEP so you can review it during the class!
When: Saturday, January 7, 9am-12noon
Where: Nevada PEP

You Can Do It
The “You Can Do It!” presentation will help families and high school students with disabilities prepare for a successful transition into college. Participants will receive their very own “You Can Do It” guide which provides strategies and ideas that will help parents and students develop a plan to attend college.
When: Thursday, January 12, 6-8pm
Where: Nevada PEP

Navigating Through Transition
Making the transition from the structure of high school to the challenges and responsibilities of adulthood can be a daunting task for many students with disabilities. This workshop gives parents and students information on transition by using the guide “Where Am I Going? How Will I Get There?”
Reviewing the rules and regulations, participants will learn to develop a transition plan which can involve other agencies. Both students and parents will find this training helpful as students move towards college, employment and living independently.
When: Saturday, January 28, 9-11am
Where: Nevada PEP

IDEA Series Evaluation For Special Needs Children
Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program Now Open

More so now than ever, a college education is becoming a requirement to a better future. The Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program has been helping families across the state become better prepared to meet the rising costs of a college education since its inception in 1998. It continues to be an attractive alternative to exhausting family savings or depending solely on student loans when sending a student to college. Along with the other Nevada 529 College Savings Plans administered through the Nevada State Treasurer’s Office, this Program is designed to help parents, other family members, and friends maximize the opportunity of saving for college. Since inception, 14,120 contracts have been purchased by Nevadans, and enrollment continues to grow. Last year alone, accounts rose by 15%, following a 26% increase in 2010.

The Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program provides many benefits, the foremost being the ability to avoid the continually escalating costs of higher education by locking in today’s rates and avoiding future tuition increases. Several affordable plan options, including flexible payment plans starting as little as $36 per month, are available. Contract holders can select from five different tuition plans and can pay for their contract in a lump sum payment, over a five year period, or monthly until graduation. Earnings are tax-deferred until the contract beneficiary attends college, and are then tax-exempt as long as the funds are used for tuition costs. A Nevada Prepaid Tuition contract is not limited to Nevada schools; it can be used at any accredited public or private university, college, or vocational school in the United States. To add to its flexibility, contract holders can transfer the contract to another qualified beneficiary (up to a first cousin), keep the contract for up to six years, or cancel the contract and request a refund if the beneficiary decides not to go to college after graduation. A popular component of the Program is a gift coupon option that can be used by other family members and friends to give a gift toward a child’s Prepaid Tuition contract. The coupon, available on our website, can be used for birthdays, religious celebrations, graduations, or any other special occasion.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to enroll their children in this valuable program now through February 28th, when the open enrollment period concludes. Enrollments for newborns are accepted through June 30th. The earlier you begin your child’s savings account the lower the price, so visit NevadaTreasurer.gov or call 1-888-477-2667 today! Sign-up for payroll deduction through your employer and receive 50% off the enrollment fee!

Get Ready for the Second Semester by Reviewing Indicators

Remember that “go get ‘em” attitude you and your child had at the beginning of the school year? That certainty that setting aside “homework time,” limiting TV and recreational Web surfing and staying in close contact with teachers would lead to top grades all year long? Unfortunately the mid-point of the school year can be a “make or break” time for addressing any problems that have held your son or daughter back. Taking a close look at the following indicators will help you determine if your child’s current studying habits and overall approach to school are making the grade:

Indicator #1: Grades and conferences

Take a look at your child’s overall grades during the first half of the year. If you believe your child could have done better, talk directly with teachers to determine any issues that are impacting his or her progress. It’s also important to tell the teacher about any issues that may affect your child’s academic success. Family tension, financial concerns, health issues or marital problems directly impact a child’s ability to concentrate in school. Creating a partnership between school and home is a responsibility that both parents and teachers share.

Indicator #2: Standardized test results

In recent years, parents and students have paid the most attention to standardized tests during the spring – when many states and districts administer exams that now determine a student’s ability to graduate or move on to the next grade. But you can get a good idea of which skills should be strengthened in advance by taking a second look at the results of other standardized exams that may have been given during the fall. If your child scored poorly in reading or mathematics at the beginning of the year, for example, pay attention to these areas as he or she prepares for the tests that will be given in just a few months.

Indicator #3: Homework

While some students tend to complete homework successfully all year, many may have fallen out of the “homework habit” as the December holidays approached. After a long break, January is a good time to ramp up for the coming months by re-establishing routines, such as setting time aside for homework each afternoon or evening and maintaining a specific area of your house or apartment specifically for homework.

Indicator #4: The Work/Life Balance

While sports, clubs and other school-related leisure activities can make the educational experience much more well-rounded and rewarding, they should never become more important than academic progress. It’s therefore important to find the right balance between leisure and learning time. Take a look at your child’s academic success during the first half of the year and weigh it against all of the extracurricular activities that filled his or her schedule. Were there enough hours in a typical day last semester to keep up with schoolwork while enjoying every activity?

Parents Are Role Models

By Icia Reid-Sandulak

Your children model your behaviors in many ways. Whatever you do, your children are watching. You know the old saying “do as I say, but not as I do”. As parents you know that this is not a realistic goal for your children. Your children are more likely to do as you do, since you are the first and most important teacher in their life. You want your children to model your good behaviors, and only the good ones, right? Your children look up to you as their parent, their guide, their hero, and their mentor. If you around fighting with your neighbors , friends, and family, or ignoring rules, or even giving your middle finger to those who offend you, that is behavior your children will see as appropriate when they are interacting with their peers. Your children are watching when you think they are not!

On the bright side, you can take comfort in knowing that you are teaching positive behaviors. Don’t forget that you serve as role models not only through direct interaction with your children, but also though example shown with your attitude and behavior when you interact with others. There are no perfect parents; therefore, as parents you will have shortcomings in your parenting roles. It is up to you to take personal time out when necessary, to avoid negative interaction. Your children will admire this behavior. It is okay to make mistakes as long as you do not keep making the same mistakes. Your children are like sponges, they will soak up all the good behaviors and the bad behaviors too. Be sure to set more good examples. It will be healthier for you and your children. Don’t forget, you are the most important person in your children’s lives.

Resolutions to Revolutions

By Lexy Capp

The final countdown has begun on December 31st at 11:59:50 PM and you are in your respective celebratory environment gearing up to welcome in the New Year. Most likely you’re surrounded by friends, family, or even if you’re all alone, we each tend to reflect on what we have accomplished in the past 365 days of our lives. We think about the good and the bad, but above all else we reminisce on what we all could have done differently in the past year. Thus, every time we ring in a New Year, we have a resolution or make a decision of some kind to produce a significant change in our lives that will have a meaningful impact on our personal well-being and others around us. The power of a New Years resolution is to help us realize that we are capable of achieving whatever we want if we set our minds to a particular task or goal.

Often times this resolution comes spontaneously and you have a burning desire to accomplish more in life. If you have the drive, then you can accomplish whatever you set out to do. As parents, we need to remind our children that it is encouraged to strive for more every year and to never let fear overtake us and get in the way of our dreams and desires. It is one thing to want something but it is an entirely separate matter to take action and do what is needed to be successful. After all, successful people do things that the unsuccessful people would never dare to do.

As you and your family are gearing up for the New Year, I firmly believe it is a strong idea for parents to sit down with their children and write down what they wish to achieve in the coming year. If your children have goals written out in front of them then they will be better prepared to do whatever it takes to bring them to fruition. It is our duty as parents to remind our children that they are loved and with hard work and determination, they can become or achieve whatever they want to in this world. By having these goals for the New Year written out, children develop a mindset to strive for more and work harder each and every day.

Whether your resolution is to spend more time with family and friends, quit smoking, quit drinking, become more physically fit, get out of debt, learn something new, get organized, or whatever you wish to achieve, we all need to build momentum to tackle our goals and attain victory in the coming year. Consider 2012 a fresh start to become whoever or whatever you want to be. Say goodbye to 2011 and welcome in the New Year with a new you. This year you could have a resolution that could start a revolution!

Understanding Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

By Nancy Gill

What is RSV?
Respiratory syncytial virus, commonly known as RSV, is a virus that infects the lungs and breathing passages. RSV can be severe for infants under 6 months of age. It’s the most common cause of pneumonia in children under the age of 1 year in the US (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2010). Almost everyone gets RSV by the age of 2.

Who is at risk?
Children who are at high risk for a severe case of RSV are premature infants (those born early at less than 36 weeks), those under 2 years of age with a congenital heart condition or chronic lung disease, and anyone with a weakened immune system. Infants who are exposed to tobacco smoke and those whose mother smoked during pregnancy are also at risk.

How is RSV spread?
RSV is very contagious, spreading whenever someone infected with RSV coughs or sneezes and the infected droplets come in contact with your mouth, nose or eyes.

What are the symptoms of RSV?
The symptoms of RSV are similar to the common cold. Those with RSV may have a cough, runny nose, sneezing, fever and poor appetite. Infants may become irritable, have decreased activity and breathing difficulties (CDC, 2010).

How can you treat RSV?
Because RSV is a virus and not a bacterial infection, antibiotics won’t work. Make certain that your child receives plenty of fluids. You can use a cool mist vaporizer to keep the air moist. Try to have your child blow their nose frequently to remove the mucus. For infants, you can use a bulb syringe.

When should you call your doctor?
You should call your doctor immediately if your child develops any of the following symptoms (March of Dimes, 2010):

Difficulty breathing;

Wheezing (makes a ‘whistling’ sound when breathing);

Worsening cough;

Thick yellow or green nasal drainage;

Difficulty swallowing or sucking;

Fever; or

Looks blue around the mouth or fingertips.

How can you prevent your child from getting RSV?
There is no vaccine to prevent RSV. But you can help to prevent the spread of RSV. The RSV virus can live on surfaces for several hours (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases [NIAID], 2008). Clean any surfaces that may be contaminated with the RSV virus with soap and water or disinfectant. There are many surfaces that we may not think about such as doorknobs, toys, phones, tables, pens and pencils:

But what else can you do to protect your child?
Keep your child away from people who have cold symptoms. Stay away from crowded areas, such as in shopping malls, grocery stores, etc. Always wash your hands with soap and water before touching your child.

If you can take action on even some of the above recommendations you are taking a positive step towards keeping your child healthy and free from RSV. Remember, to talk with your pediatrician about any concerns you may have and treatment options for RSV.

To Err is Human, to Forgive Divine

By Dr. Stephen Fife

I recently heard a remarkable story about a man who is working in Sierra Leone with perpetrators and victims of war atrocities in order to facilitate forgiveness and repair emotional wounds. His efforts are having a significant effect in helping these parties reconcile and heal. This story inspired me to think about the importance of forgiveness in each of our lives, particularly in the context of families.

The18th-century English poet Alexander Pope penned the phrase: “To err is human, to forgive divine.” This famous quote highlights two aspects of family life: 1) Families are made up of humans who make mistakes, and 2) forgiveness can bring profound healing in family relationships. Because of the close proximity of family members and the emotional closeness (and inherent vulnerability) that occurs, family relationships provide regular opportunities to offend or take offense—and to forgive.

Forgiveness may be one of the most difficult things we do in our lives, but can also be one of the most helpful. Research shows that forgiveness is a key ingredient of successful marriages and families and can facilitate both individual and relationship healing. Studies indicate that forgiveness can help one overcome interpersonal hurt, anger, depression, family-of-origin issues, sexual abuse, and marital problems. The ability to seek and offer forgiveness is one of the most significant factors associated with marital stability and satisfaction. It is an important part of the healing process for everyday relationship hurts as well as more significant offenses, such as infidelity. It can help remove emotional burdens and help restore relationships, if desired.

Nevertheless, negative beliefs or misunderstandings about forgiveness often keep people from considering it. Some mistakenly see forgiveness as accepting, excusing, or condoning the mistreatment, conveying the message that what the other did was OK or that the offense was not that bad. Some view forgiveness as a sign of weakness or being a pushover. Others feel that forgiveness has the effect of sweeping a problem under the rug or lets the perpetrator off the hook. Understood in these ways, forgiveness may feel too risky or unappealing.

However, forgiveness is characterized by a voluntary release of negative thoughts and feelings toward another, thus freeing up energy once tied to anger, bitterness, and resentment. It primarily benefits the one doing the forgiving, not the one being forgiven. It brings freedom and liberation.

By putting down anger and letting go of resentment and the desire for others to suffer, we are relieved of the heavy burden such emotions carry with them. As Terry Warner observed, with forgiveness we let go of anger “as one whose boat has capsized might let go of a satchel of belongings which has been dragging him or her underwater and let it simply float away as obviously the lesser of two losses.” It also allows us to approach family members in a way that invites them into a constructive dialog about possible solutions to family problems.

His research has been published and presented international conferences. He is happily married and the father of two sons.
