Young Playwrights Summer Program

The application for summer 2026 is open! Deadline to apply is Monday, May 11.

The TDF Young Playwrights Summer Program is a free two-week playwriting intensive led by award-winning dramatist Crystal Skillman. Students explore personal expression in writing, and the art and form of dramatic writing. Students work individually and in teams, with a final presentation on the last day.

Who is eligible?

Rising high school juniors and seniors as well as spring 2026 graduates who are interested in learning the craft of playwriting and creating their own works.

Residents of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are eligible to apply.

Students must have well-developed writing skills and an interest in playwriting along with a letter of recommendation from a teacher or teaching artist.

What does the Young Playwrights Summer Program include?

Playwriting workshops five days a week for two weeks
Two Broadway/Off-Broadway evening show outings for study and inspiration
Small group seminars with professional theatre artists
Writing (and rewriting) a short original play
Professional actors reading student plays in progress with a professional director to guide them
Staged readings of final works by professional actors

When is the Young Playwrights Summer Program?

Monday to Friday, July 6-July 17 from 2 to 5 p.m. Final presentation on Friday, July 17 from 1 to 7 p.m.

Where is the Young Playwrights Summer Program?

In-person sessions will typically take place at TDF’s Midtown Manhattan offices at 520 Eighth Avenue between 36th and 37th Streets, Suite 801. (On two dates, classes will be held elsewhere in Manhattan.) The building requires visitors to sign in and present ID. Be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes before each class starts.

I wanted to share that we started getting my 14 year old Executive Functioning coaching through the ADHD Training Center. She was diagnosed with ADHD almost a year ago and homework definitely was the hardest time of the day for all of us. The coach works with her every day for 15-30 minutes via FaceTime and helps her organize her time and workload. It’s made our lives so much easier because we’re not arguing about homework now. I still log into check google classroom and the other portals but by the time I do that she’s already completed her assignments after discussing them with her coach.

I hope once she develops the skills to manage her homework / studying then we can move onto other things like managing time and organization.

Ekem Merchant-Bleiberg did a PTA-paid Heath/Sex Ed multi-week residency for 7th and 8th graders at my kids’ small public middle school. She was amazing. Rock n Roll Retreat NYC!, a weeklong music and social justice program for girls, trans, and nonbinary youth ages 10-16 in New York City. I have been helping to organize Rock n Roll Retreat NYC!’s first ever camp session this summer and I’m super excited about their programming, and the fact that they're founded and led by NYC young people who are themselves alums of similar camps here and elsewhere.

Rock n Roll Retreat NYC! is a small music mentorship and social justice summer program aimed at empowering girls and trans youth living in New York City. Our programming is a week-long intensive where youth take workshops, learn instruments, form bands, and write original songs, culminating in a showcase where campers perform for their communities. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the camp and showcase this summer will be online, although future camps will be in-person. Campers will be provided all materials needed for camp, including instruments, workshop materials, and even snacks, because everyone who wants to rock out should have the chance! The camp itself is in a “pay what you can” model, and no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

FIT Programs for Middle & High Schoolers

FIT offers experiential learning opportunities for middle and high school students who are emerging entrepreneurs and strategists, impassioned artists and stylists, impossible dreamers, and unconventional thinkers and makers. Because these seminars and classes are offered in a remote environment this summer, they are available more widely than ever before.

Precollege students will engage with FIT’s own faculty and alumni while learning the skills necessary to succeed in the creative industries. More than 140 programs are offered that teach hands-on skills and help prepare for the college admissions process, including portfolio development.

Summer 2021 options include:

Middle School and High School Workshops
Fun, short programs designed to introduce students to some of the unusual and creative topics FIT specializes in. Students spend four days learning a specific skill or technique or explore the many different career opportunities our graduates have gone on to.

High School Summer Live
Students can discover their passions, create competitive portfolio pieces, explore FIT’s majors, and prep for college level courses. These specialized 10- and 11-day courses are taught by FIT professionals who love what they do and love to share their experiences and talents even more.

THE NEW YORK CENTER FOR LIVING LAUNCHES NIP IT IN THE BUD:

AN EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT PROGRAM TO HELP ADOLESCENTS AND YOUNG ADULTS QUIT VAPING AND TOBACCO USE

In a partnership with The American Lung Association’s N-O-T Not On Tobacco® program, New York Center for Living is launching its virtual Nip it in the Bud program this Tuesday, April 13. The program will provide options, resources and support to quit for good!

Nip it in the Bud is an education and support program to help adolescents and young adults quit vaping and tobacco use. It helps clients develop a plan that guides them on their quit journey. They will also receive the support they need to remain vape-free and tobacco-free for life! This cycle in particular is available to adolescents ages 13-18.

In this virtual 5-week (10 session) program, they cover the following topics: reasons to quit, why you smoke or vape, myths from “big tobacco,” nicotine addiction and triggers, effects of smoking and vaping, how to quit, overcoming obstacles to quitting, how to deal with stress, and staying committed to quitting.

This cycle will kick-off on Tuesday, April 13 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. with a presentation from Dr. Steven Dewey and an orientation with the NYCFL team. The cycle will then begin on Thursday, April 15 and meet virtually every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 - 7 p.m. through May 18. This program has been generously underwritten through donations to keep cost to a minimum at $500 for the full 10-session cycle.

Interested families can contact NYCFL by calling (212) 712-8800, emailing info@centerforliving.org, or by filling out this interest form. They will have additional cycles in the future, so we encourage you to fill out the interest form even if these cycle dates don’t work for you.

Masonry Restoration Technician Training Program

The mission of this program is to prepare participants for entry-level construction positions in stone restoration and associated trades. This spring break, STEM is taking over the City! With STEM Matters NYC programs, students in grades 9 to 12 can meet and work with field experts and have real-world learning experiences. Apply now to intern at the NYC Department of Education’s Genovesi Environmental Study Center (GESC) in Brooklyn. Interns will urban farm, get their hands dirty in the gardens or care for more than 200 animals that call GESC home.

Interested in applying to arts high schools? This year, auditions for all programs that use an audition admissions method—including programs at LaGuardia High School—will be submitted virtually.

Here’s how to learn more, apply, and audition:

Join us at the Virtual High School Arts Fairs in January and February. Each event features audition schools from different boroughs, and all events will share information about how to apply, audition requirements for each discipline, and how to submit your audition.

Explore audition programs with MySchools. Filter for programs that use the audition admissions method by clicking on “More Filters”. You can also search for programs in specific disciplines by using keywords like “dance” or “visual arts” in the search box.

Submit your high school application and/or LaGuardia registration by February 23 at Myschools.nyc, through your school counselor, or through a Family Welcome Center.

For all audition programs except those at LaGuardia High School, add the audition programs you’d like to attend to your high school application. Your auditions will only be reviewed by schools that you list on this application. Remember to list all programs in your true order of preference before you submit.
For LaGuardia High School programs, register to audition for any or all of LaGuardia’s six programs. LaGuardia uses a separate admissions method, so you cannot add LaGuardia programs to your high school application.

Submit your audition virtually by March 1. Learn how and what to prepare for each discipline, including for LaGuardia High School programs, at nyc.gov/HSAuditions. Please note that to make the process less time-intensive for applicants this year, audition programs in each discipline are using common components. This means that if you want to submit a theater audition to three theater programs, you only need to submit those materials (such as a monologue video) once!

All current DOE students and any charter school students with DOE log-in credentials—such as a NYC Student Accounts (NYCSA)—can submit audition materials through the Virtual Audition Submission Tool. If you don’t already have a NYSCA account, you can log in here to create one!
Students without NYC Student Accounts, such as private or parochial students, can send audition materials by email to VirtualAuditionSubmissionTool@NYCDOE.onmicrosoft.com.
