TODAY! PWR Rocks to Raise Money to Help Pre-K Teacher Burned Out of House

Parents Who Rock will join with Montclair Patch, Tapastry restaurant, musician Meg Beattie Patrick, and others to raise money for LaMonica Carter, a teacher at the Montclair Community Pre-K, and her family, who lost everything in a devastating fire earlier this month. Montclair Patch reported the story early Thursday morning.

The concert is set for Monday, May 28, from noon until 4 p.m. at 12 Church Street in Montclair.

The event will feature live music by Parents Who Rock bands, giveaways, and a bake sale. The goal is to raise enough money for Carter and her four children to help them rebuild their lives. The outdoor concert fundraiser will move indoors in the event of rain.

The beloved teacher, who has worked at the Montclair Community Pre-K for the past 11 years, is still homeless nearly two weeks after a fire destroyed her Belleville home and everything she owns on Mother's Day.

An anonymous donor has already stepped forward and offered to match every dollar donated, up to $5,000.

Carter told Montclair Patch that she and her four children, 7 to 14, had no renters insurance and can't afford the security deposit on another apartment or home.

"A lot of families have provided us with food and clothing, which is great, but we need somewhere to live," Carter told Montclair Patch.

"I haven't been able to work because I've been out each day visiting all sorts of agencies, trying to get some sort of help, but to no avail.”

Carter, a single mother, said she doesn't earn a lot of money from her job at the preschool and that it will cost her a few thousand dollars for the security deposit on a new place alone. She hopes to find a rental in Montclair, Bloomfield, or Belleville.

On May 13, Carter and her four children salvaged nothing but the clothes on their backs when a fire ripped through their Belleville home, incinerating everything inside. Fortunately, no one was home at the time of the afternoon three-alarm blaze.

Carter has been a full-time teacher at the Montclair Community Pre-K for 11 years and has touched many lives. Please come out on Monday and help this family rebuild their lives.

Parents Who Rock's the Bloomingfields are playing half a great double bill this Saturday, May 19th @the Art Studio. The local sensations will be strutting their smart brand of alt/pop/indie rock tastefully infused with a good dose of sharp, ironyclad, songwriting laden with great hooks and fantastic harmonies. Currently opening for and playing as part of Steve Earle's band, the Mastersons are touring supporting their new release, 'Birds Fly South'. 'Birds' is getting some great critical acclaim with Esquire Magazine noting them as one of 2012's top 10 Bands You Need to Know Now. Their first release as a group, husband and wife duo Chris Masterson and Eleanor Whitmore have drawn comparisons to the Jayhawks with their upbeat, pop-influenced spin on the Americana genre. Having worked with Son Volt, Regina Spektor, Diana Ross and Mr. Earle (to name just a few) Chris and Eleanor bring a ton of experience to doing their own thing... together. MyMyndMocean to Perform at Tour De Montclair Sunday, May 20th

Parents Who Rock's MyMyndMocean will be performing at this year's Tour De Montclair on Sunday, May 20th at Brookdale Park.

This is Bike/Walk Montclair's 10th anniversary of the event and the theme is "Bikes and Feet on Every Street." The event starts at 10 a.m.

My MyMindMocean is scheduled to play around 11:30 a.m.

Walkers and bikers can check in at 8:30 a.m. at the Grove Street entrance to the park.

Registration is necessary to participate. All riders must wear bike helmets. Children under 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Besides the music, there will be a stunt bike show at noon, as well as a trike-a-thon.

Calling all singer/songwriters! The Modern Music Academy is presenting the Essex Singer Songwriter Competition. Singer/songwriters can enter to win the chance to record a 3-song EP with a two-time Grammy Award-winning producer, an opportunity valued at more than $6,000.

PWR Rocks Nishuane School's Mayfair This Saturday, May 19

Parents Who Rock will be serenading the throngs at Nishuane’s Mayfair, the school’s annual spring festival, this Saturday afternoon, May 19th.

Mayfair, an International Celebration of Friendship, runs from 11 a.m. to p.m., rain or shine, at Nishuane Elementary School, 32 Cedar Ave. in Montclair.

Besides live music, the fair features games, rides, an electric train, arts and crafts, international food and treats, and fabulous raffle baskets. In addition, the Montclair Town Animal Shelter will have a station with kittens and puppies for adoption. Cost is $10 per child; adults and children under 2 are free.

Angels Garage will be hosting its CD Release Party/Farewell Show at Tierney's Tavern Friday, May 18. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. and music goes on until 12:30 a.m.

The show will also feature special guest performances. $5 cover.

Parents Who Rock's Sock Monster will be returning to Tierney’s Tavern Friday night, May 11. The band—John Paul Uva, guitar and vocals, Jim Kvoriak, guitar and vocals, Bob Terhune, bass and vocals, and Andy Yeates, drums—looks for great rock/pop songs, classics from ‘60s bands like the Kinks and the Searchers, and mixes them in with more recent alternative gems from the likes of the Replacements, the Jayhawks and the Old 97s. They put their own stamp on the music, with their twin guitar attack, great harmonies and driving rhythm section.

They've been working on a whole slew of new covers, including songs from The Records, Decemberists, Teenage Fan Club and Wilco. Show starts at 9 p.m. $5 cover. Tierney’s is located at 136-138 Valley Road, Montclair.

Alma Schneider and the No Rehearsals will be playing a set at a benefit for the Montclair Bread Company, Sunday, April 29 at 113 Walnut Street. The owners of the much loved bakery, Sally and Will Reinhardt, are returning to Australia next month and have put the Bread Company up for sale after 19 years of business, to resolve some immigration issues. The event runs from 2 to 9 p.m. and will feature live music. Bring a dish for the potluck, and bring a chair to listen to the entertainment. The No-Rehearsals kick off the music at 2 p.m. The event is free but donations will be accepted.

Bloomingfields Coming to an Essex County Club Near You on a Saturday Night in April!

Spring is here and the fields are ablooming! Come out and see The Bloomingfields on their Essex County Spring Tour. They'll be playing at Hat City Kitchen, on Saturday, April 21 at 9 p.m. Hat City Kitchen is located at 459 Valley Road, in Orange, NJ.

Then, the following Saturday, April 28, they'll be at Tierney's Tavern, 136-138 Valley Road, playing at a benefit for Renaissance School. Other bands of parent musicians on the bill include The Dave Wish Intergalactic Quartet and Ehlis and Levine Duo. Admission is $15 and all proceeds go to support Renaissance programs. Doors open at 8 p.m.

Benefit Concert for Haiti Set for Friday, February 11

Parents Who Rockers Big Mamou and many others will be performing at the 3rd Annual Concert for Haiti.

Other performers include Jazz House Kids, Stephen Bryant, Passing Notes, Obed Jean-Louis, Chazzan: Meredith Greenberg and Leora Perlman, the Reticents, and Peri Smilow. Dr. Richard Besser from ABC news will also be on hand.

The show is set for February 11, from 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 67 Church Street, Montclair.

All proceeds will go to the Edeyo Foundation.

You can still buy tickets to see John Wesley Harding (JWH), aka Wesley Stace, who will be kicking off year with a house concert @The Art Studio/Studio Kids Art in Montclair on Saturday, January 28th. Megan Reilly (a Montclair local) will also sit in and do a few songs with JWH and on
her own.

Harding has released 17 albums, ranging from traditional folk to full-on pop music. His most recent, The Sound of His Own Voice (Oct. 2011), produced by Scott McCaughey and JWH, features a backing band with members of the Decemberists, Peter Buck, Rosanne Cash, John Roderick, Laura Veirs, and many others—13 new songs, many among his best since 1837 AD.
