Parents Who Rock's The Bloomingfields will perform along with Tip Canary and Mingle this Saturday in a benefit being held by Team In Training—Triatheletes for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The show, at Tierney's Tavern, 136-138 Valley Road, in Montclair, starts at 8 p.m. The event will feature food and raffles in addition to great live music.

PWR Bands to Heat Up Hillside/Nishuane Fireball

Three Parents Who Rock bands have signed on to play at the Nishuane-Hilside Fireball, set for Friday, March 26. The No-Rehearsals, Doghouse and the Bloomingfields will be featured at this special adults-only fundraiser jointly hosted by the Nishuane and Hillside PTAs. The event will feature live and silent auctions boasting great prizes including charming classroom art projects, and special opportunities to spend time with beloved teachers, as well as good food, beer and wine, and incredible live entertainment.

The Montclair-Glen Ridge-Nutley Chapter of the American Red Cross, based in Montclair at 63 Park St., will hold its 13th annual awards gala on Saturday, Feb. 27.

The event will honor 10 people for their contributions to the quality of life through volunteer and humanitarian efforts in their respective towns.

The evening's honorary chair will be Gretchen Prater of Essex Fells. The gala will be held at Mayfair Farms, West Orange, with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 8.

The black-tie-optional evening includes a raffle and live and silent auctions. Auction prizes include vacation homes in Vermont, spa packages, an in-home catered dinner, tickets to television show tapings including the finale of "The Apprentice' in New York City with an overnight stay package, sporting events, sports memorabilia, jewelry, fine arts and dozens more.
This year's honorees from Montclair are Linda Bowers, Jack Bowers, Peter Giuffra, Jane Marcus, and Alma Schneider.

Other honorees are Doris Burn of Cedar Grove, longtime director of the chapter's transportation program; Bonnie Carter of West Orange, Mayor Peter Hughes of Glen Ridge, and Anthony Iannorone of Nutley.

The Montclair honorees:
Linda Bowers is a graduate of Princeton University. She is treasurer and volunteer coordinator of Montclair Schools Rock! and has served as board member, treasurer and president of the Field Center for Children's Integrated Development.

She is also active in youth hockey and lacrosse, and the Boy Scouts. Her children, Tate, 14 and Brock, 11, attend Glenfield Middle School.

Jack Bowers (no relation to Linda) received his undergraduate degree from Duke University and an MBA from Tulane University in New Orleans.

Since retiring from a 20-year career on Wall Street, Bowers has managed a Montclair-based business and financial consulting practice.

He has been a consultant for the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity since 2005, and assisted several families who relocated to Montclair after Hurricane Katrina.

Bowers is a trustee and past president of HOMECorp, and a member of the Community Advisory Board at Montclair State University.

He has served as coach, league commissioner and coordinator for Montclair Parks & Recreation.

Peter Giuffra was born in Montclair, and is known to many as "Elvis" in the town's annual 4th of July parade.

His dedication to Montclair schools began in the 1980s when he served as the PTSO representative at Montclair High School.
He attends and raises funds for MHS Project Graduation, and can be seen around town gardening in Montclair's parks and schoolyards.

Giuffra recently celebrated his 43rd wedding anniversary to his sweetheart, Alica.

Jane Marcus has lived in Montclair since 2002, with her husband, Johnson Tyler.

She is the founder of the earth-friendly Community Wide Swap, which since 2006 has turned people's cast-offs into other people's treasure. She also co-created a box exchange program to get cartons from people who have moved to those who are in the process of moving.

Marcus is a graduate of Brooklyn Law School.

Alma Schneider is a graduate of University of Wisconsin-Madison, and earned her master's degree in social work from Hunter College. She has been a resident of Montclair since 2002.

She has served as Hillside School PTA's Health and Wellness liaison to the school district.

Schneider founded Parents Who Rock in 2005. PWR has raised more than $200,000 for causes such as All Children's Playground at Edgemont Park, Volunteer Lawyers for Justice, Covenant House, and Family Service League's rape crisis center.

TONIGHT!! Sock Monster, El Kabong! Play Benefit to Help Poz Family Pay Medical Bills

Parents Who Rock's Sock Monster and El Kabong! will be playing a benefit concert, with singer James Galione (visit him on MySpace) this Sunday, March 7, to help raise money to offset medical bills for Ben and Cherie Posluszny and family. Ben's mother, Chris, is a teacher at the Montclair Cooperative School.

Ryan, the Posluszny's oldest son, 13, has been hospitalized for a rare, aggressive skin-eating infection in his leg. After 9 operations, Ryan is finally doing better, although he faces months of skin grafts, reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation. His mother, Cherie, however, is currently recovering from an emergency appendectomy she suffered after collapsing at the hospital where Ryan was in the ICU. (Click on flyer, left, to read more.)

The show will take place at Just Jakes, 30 Park Street, Montclair, from 7-10 p.m.

Besides live music, the evening will also feature amazing raffle prizes, including one-week accomodations in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; a one-year membership at the Montclair Art Museum, a Flip video camera, original artwork, gift certificates, business consulting packages and much more. Hamstrung Show In Jersey City to Benefit Cancer Support Group

Parents Who Rock's Hamstrung will be performing with the David Easton Band in a benefit to raise money for the Community Cancer Support Group of Bayonne. The show will take place Friday, February 19, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m at O'Hara's Downtown Bar and Grill, 172 1st Street (1st & Marin) in Jersey City. Join Parents Who Rock’s Big Mamou at a benefit concert for Sisters on the Runway, featuring great live music, food, dancing and more, this Sunday, January 31 from 1:30 to 3 p.m at Yogadesha, 25 Watchung Plaza, Montclair, NJ.

Sisters on the Runway is a student-run a group from Montclair High School. They host an annual fashion show to raise money for Shelter Our Sisters to benefit and raise awareness for women who have suffered from domestic violence.

Montclair Rallies for Concert For Haitian Earthquake Relief, This Monday, MLK Day

In response to the earthquake emergency in Haiti, the town of Montclair is producing a benefit concert THIS MONDAY NIGHT, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders for their Haiti relief efforts. The lineup will include Grammy Award-winner Christian McBride with Melissa Walker and Friends, The Reticents (with PWR's Bob Melman), 2010 Grammy Award nominee Stephen Bryant, the Passing notes, and others. Come out and join Parents Who Rock’s Hamstrung for “A Night of Ham and Whiskey” January 23 at Tierney’s Tavern in Montclair. Sock Monster is a band of local Dads (in photo, from left, Andy Yeates on drums, Bob Terhune on bass and vocals, John Paul Uva on guitar and vocals, Jim Kvoriak on guitar and vocals) who play a mix of smart covers—powerpop, alternative and punk shoulda-been classics. They find great songs from The Kinks, The Clash, the Replacements, Squeeze, Old 97s, and Elvis Costello and mix them up with more recent gems, like a cover of the Jayhawk's "Save it For a Rainy Day," the track they contributed to the second PWR CD, Let 'em Play. They’ve all played in NY/NJ clubs for years, still play in other bands and play out together whenever they get the chance.

PWR Bands Playing at Festival for Foster Children Today

Three Parents Who Rock bands will be performing at the Multicultural Winter Festival, Saturday. Dec. 5, from 2 to 6 p.m. at First Congregational Church, Montclair. Mark Egan and and the Snowmen will play Christmas and winter classics, Los Primos will perform Latin dance music and Team Embassador will play reggae.

The family-friendly event, sponsored by the The Montclair Multiracial Adoptive Parents Group, is open to all, and will feature lots of live music and delicious food representing a wide range of cultures, family portraits, arts and crafts including projects with Abrakadoodle, story time, face painting, and children’s tatoos. Fair trade vendors and Barefoot Books will be selling various holiday items.

The music proves to be an entertaining array of styles from around the world. Other performers include Sivan Vigder, performing Jewish Holiday music and fun kids stuff, Princeton Korean Dance troupe, 13 Hands playing world healing music, New Soul Rhymes band doing nursery rhymes with a soul groove, Cynara Turetta performing Portuguese hymns, John Ehlis doing an eclectic mix, Chris Langfield playing classical piano, and Daryl Uberoi of Wingate rapping.

Food vendors include Dulce Candy Boutique, Lalezar Restaurant, Le Baker's Dozen, Mesob, Mexicali Rose, Nauna's Bella Casa, Pahang, Sweet Potato and Pecan, T.S. Ma, Miss Nicky's Gourmet Toffee, and the Fine Grind.

The centerpiece of the event will be a portrait exhibit including biographies of 15 foster children awaiting permanent homes. Money raised will benefit foster children through The Heart Gallery of New Jersey. Cost is $20 per family, or $10 per adult, $5 per child. 2 PWR Bands to Play at Crane Park Festival

Two Parents Who Rock bands will be performing at the Crane Park Festival, an afternoon of free family fun at Montclair's East End, Saturday, September 26.

Sock Monster will take the stage at 12:30 p.m., and Doghouse will perform at 2 p.m.

The festival, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will also feature pet portraits by Phil Cantor Photography, demonstrations by Glen Ridge Taekwon-Do and the Afro-Brazilian Cultural Center of Montclair-Capoeira, and offerings from Barista Kids and many other area organizations and merchants.

PWR Invited to Comedy Show Starring Jessica Kirson Sept. 25

Lee Haberman, friend to many and Manager of Hyena Comedy Lounge in Parsippany, invites the PWR family to a hilarious comedy show featuring Jessica Kirson in a rare, Northern NJ appearance, on September 25 at 9 p.m.

Jessica, a New Jersey native and a semi-finalist on the NBC TV show "Last Comic Standing," has been named "Funniest Woman in Comedy" and has appeared on "Late Night with David Letterman," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Conan O'Brien," "Late Night with Carson Daly," and "Comedy Central Presents." She has also headlined major comedy festivals and comedy clubs around the globe. Opening for Jessica is feature performer Bernie Fursh, and the entire evening will be hosted by the very funny and lovely Elaine Williams.

Jessica just happens to be a cousin of Stacey Pinilis, whom many of you know. Stacey, Alma and a few other PWR alumni are attending the show.

Special Note: The Parents Who Rock Annual September Backyard Festival has been postponed to Sunday, September 13!!!

The performers are all set for Parents Who Rock's annual September outdoor music festival. The event is now scheduled for Sunday, September 13, noon to 6 p.m, at 72 High Street, Montclair--the corner of Cedar and High Streets.

There will be activities for kids including face painting from Aunt Jean's Toys and Treats, and Kundalini yoga for kids by Akulsukh Singh. In addition, Alicia's Hair Salon will be on hand to give kids "rock star hair-do's" with washable hair color sprays, and Dulce Candy Boutique will have a balloon twister at the event. Other businesses offering kids' activities or other products/services include Sapienza Couture, If Kids Could Vote T-shirts, and Elevation Burger. Outpost In the Burbs will also be represented.

Plan on bringing a blanket, bringing some snacks, bringing the kids and hearing some great music!
