Montgomery County Community College and Whitpain Township are showing the recent Hollywood blockbuster Green Lantern as a drive-in movie Friday, Sept. 9, in the Cathcart Road parking lot at the College’s Central Campus, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell. Once Gov. Walker signs his budget into law on Sunday, Planned Parent hood stands to lose $1 million in state funding.

The organization provides reproductive health care services through 27 clinics across Wisconsin to about 73,000 people across the state, most of them women.A spokesperson says the cuts will primarily impact their family planning services in small communities like Shawano and Wisconsin Rapids, the clinics that rely most on state funding.

Those supporting the cuts say that it is not in the state’s best interest to provide funding to a group that provides abortions.”If organizations want to do that, we’re not saying they don’t have the right to do that under the law. While we disagree with abortions entirely, they do have that right,” said Julaine Appling of Wisconsin Family Action. “We don’t have to use taxpayer money to do that.”

Many disagree with the inevitable cuts.”It’s not about abortion,” said Planned Parenthood patient Wren Keturi. “This is about people’s lives and keeping Wisconsin healthy as a whole.”A spokesperson said abortion-related care was less than one percent of the services they provided in 2009.

The Planned Parent hood clinic in Madison will not be impacted by the cuts because it receives federal funding.

Average mortgage rates increased this week over last week. Current mortgage rates on 30 year home loans are averaging 4.30%, up from the previous week’s average 30 year mortgage rate of 4.14%. Last week’s average of 4.14% was a record low for 30 year rates on MonitorBankRates’ Weekly Average Mortgage Rate Survey. Mortgage rates today on 15 loans are averaging 3.51%, up from last week’s average 15 year rate of 3.36%.

Mortgage rates today on 30 year jumbo loans are averaging 4.68%, an increase from last week’s average 30 year jumbo mortgage rate of 4.70%.  15 year jumbo mortgage rates are at 3.98%, up from last week’s average 15 year jumbo rate of 3.87%.

Mortgage rates today are mixed as conforming mortgage rates and 15 year jumbo mortgage rates mover lower. 30 year jumbo mortgage rates were slightly higher but still near all time lows. Current low mortgage rates are not bringing home buyers back into the market. Loan application volume is lower in this week’s Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey released by the Mortgage Bankers Association. In this week’s survey the amount of people applying for a home loan decreased 9.6 percent from one week earlier.

Single Parents experience

DAVID Cameron hit out at fathers who run out on their children yesterday and said absent dads deserve to be shamed in the same way as drink drivers.

The Prime Minister described family life as the “cornerstone of our society” and said fathers had a ­financial and emotional duty to support their kids.

But expert parents called his comments an extraordinary “contradiction” because new Government rules will actually make it harder for single parents to chase up errant fathers.

Not only will they have to pay £100 simply to apply to the Child Support Agency, they then face losing between 7% to 10% of the money they receive in charges.

Mr Cameron said: “It’s high time runaway dads were stigmatised and the full force of shame heaped upon them. They should be looked at like drink drivers, people who are beyond the pale.

“They need the message rammed home, from every part of our culture, that what they’re doing is wrong.

“Leaving single mothers – who do a heroic job against all odds – to fend for themselves isn’t acceptable.”

Mr Cameron also said he was ­determined to keep his election pledge of tax breaks – worth at least £150 a year – for married couples.

Absent fathers are a huge problem in the UK. There are about a million families with no child ­maintenance arrangements, over a million children whose father isn’t contributing ­financially.

Half of the youngsters who grow up in single-parent families are living below the poverty line. Child maintenance can make a big difference to their children’s lives.

David Cameron compared absent fathers to drink drivers but that’s not a comparison I would make. This is a highly sensitive and emotional area and stigmatising doesn’t help.

Fathers have a responsibility. They cannot run away from it. But instead of stigmatising them, we’d like to see better support for families who have separated to help them work through the conflict between them in the interests of their children.

Sadly, Mr Cameron and his ­Government are making life harder for single parents at the moment.

They propose making single parents pay a fee and ongoing charges for the Child Support Agency to collect money from runaway dads.

It would consist of an upfront ­application fee of £100 plus an extra ongoing charge of between 7% and 12% of the money paid.

The proposals will act as a ­disincentive to using the CSA. The people who use it at the moment are the people who need it.

They can’t make private arrangements, either as they don’t know where the dad lives or because he is deliberately avoiding and refusing to pay.

Sometimes there is a lot of conflict and the mother doesn’t feel able to negotiate an agreement.

In those situations, you need help from a statutory agency but £100 is a big chunk of money to pay just to start using the CSA.

The people more likely to use the agency are those in more difficult circumstances. They tend to be poorer and to have more difficult ­relationships with the other parent.

They are disadvantaged single parents. We need the CSA to be there for exactly those type of parents. The proposals make Mr Cameron’s comments yesterday all the more extraordinary.

We do welcome the concern about the issue and we welcome the positive things the Prime Minister said about single parents, becauseit is really tough bring-ing up a child on your own.

But the Government is essentially making it much, much harder for single parents to get their child maintenance money paid.

On the one hand he is blasting dads for not taking responsibility for their children and on the other, his Government has proposals on the table that will make it much harder for those dads to pay child ­maintenance to the mother.

It’s an extraordinary contradiction. I do wonder if he has been properly briefed about what the new ­Government proposals are.

What single parents are looking for is not blasting people and ­stigmatising dads, they are looking for practical support by the paying of child ­maintenance.

A lot of them also want some more emotional support.

And they want the father to get more engaged in the child’s life. Frankly, stigmatising dads who are not there for their kids isn’t very helpful at all.

It makes no sense whatsoever to call for more responsibility from runaway dads while making it harder for single parents to make runaway dads pay maintenance.

Fathers also play an important role emotionally. Children benefit from having good relationships with both their parents.

In one-in-three single-parent ­families there is no contact with the other parent – usually the father.

In a lot of cases fathers are absent from a very early age, so the child will not have an experience of what it is like to not have a father there.

In other cases the father leaves at a later stage and this can be extremely hurtful for the child.

ABANDONED

We find that most children do want both parents to be engaged in their lives in some way and, where this is safe, this is usually the best option for the youngster.

What you cannot do is generalise as to why fathers are not around.

Single parents who have been abandoned rightfully feel angry about what has happened to them and feel let down.

I think it’s entirely fair for anyone in that situation to feel that sense of anger towards the father. But that is only a proportion of the cases.

There are other complicated reasons why fathers are not there and to make a very, very broad generalisation like that is not very helpful.

But some fathers don’t realise how important they are to their children, or are unsure how to parent after separation. Sometimes conflict between the parents makes it difficult for them to stay engaged.

The Government’s tax breaks for married couples are another ­ridiculous policy. They do not work at all in keeping families together.

There is absolutely no evidence that marriage tax incentives lead to people staying together.

You would have to wonder what kind of relationship it was that stayed together for the sake of a few pounds extra a week.

A marriage tax is unfair because it would benefit better-off married couples rather than single parents and cohabiting couples who tend to be poorer.

In the current economic climate, when families are really suffering from the impact of cuts aimed at addressing the budget deficit, it would be an ­extraordinary misuse of public money to put public funds into a marriage tax.

It’s a tough job bringing up a child on your own, ­especially juggling childcare and work.

Single parents are often very isolated and don’t get out much, so it’s not an easy life.

Early childhood education is good and proper child needs to face the future, that’s the message delivered Professor Sandralyn Byrnes, Australia’s & International Teacher of the Year.

Social-media holding company Quepasa Corp has proposed to purchase the New Hope, Bucks County-based myYearbook.com for $100 million, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Quepasa, based in Miami, will pay $82 million in stock and $18 million in cash for the website, according to a Quepasa statement.

MyYearbook made $23.7 million in advertising sales in 2010. Founder Geoff Cook told the Inquirer that after the deal goes through they’ll stay headquartered in New Hope and that location will still be “the lead development, safety and sales location.”

Cook will continue to lead the company, assuming the titles of Chief Operating Officer and President of Consumer Internet. The current myYearbook staff is also expected to keep their jobs.

Something that separates myYearbook from other social networking sites, such as Facebook, is that myYearbook allows users to meet new people on their site rather than having users build their networks solely out of existing friends.

MyYearbook boasts about its “significant mobile social platform.” One of the most successful methods that myYearbook utilizes to connect people is gaming. Their sites feature social flash games.  A partnership with Quepasa, which has its own social game development group, is expected to make their already successful gaming system even more effective, states the Inquirer.

myYearbook: Startup Name You Need To Know Valued for $100 Million
An unknown person once said that high school is the mouse race to prepare you for the rat race. For the next generation of million dollar milennials, that race is off to an early start.

It was a simple and irresistibly practical idea from siblings Catherine and David Cook. In 2005, the 15- and 16-year-old duo decided to trade the paper version of the regular high school yearbook for the digital one. myYearbook was born, a social networking website that the brother and sister team worked with throughout high school. The founder of the site would be Geoff Cook, the other sibling to Catherine and David, who would work to hire over 100 employees with the company. myYearbook exploded in popularity and in just six years it could proudly boast $17 million raised in financing, over 20 million members, 1.2 billion monthly page views, and $20 million in revenue as reported by both MSNBC and Business Insider.

The site met with its fair share of early investors interested in buying the company, but with only a few thousand dollars as one interested party’s offer, the Cook’s decided to wait on the offer. The wait was worth it as last Wednesday publicly traded Latino social network Quepasa purchased myYearbook for $100 million. $82 million would be in Quepasa common stock while David, Geoff, and Catherine would pick up the remaining $18 million for themselves. The money won’t change the business though- Geoff will still continue to remain the company CEO and the staff of myYearbook will all keep their jobs and remain headquartered in New Hope with a letter Geoff wrote to the employees stating that this isn’t, “…an exit or the end. I consider it the end of the beginning… we have a lot more innovative products to create.”

And how. MyYearbook specializes in allowing users to meet new people on the site instead of relying on the Facebook formula of befriending just the people you already know in certain networks. The additional perk of social flash games available on the site boosts myYearbook up in the social platforming arena. While the three certainly have the opportunity to retire early, I doubt they will. More likely, it’s time for them to spark new ideas, test out potential social networking websites on the rise, and create more companies to join their already impressive resume. The age of the million dollar millennial is quickly on the rise.

The younger and younger the next big upstarts in startups get, the savvier they are in social media and looking to work within an industry that “gets” them. Alongside the article I recently wrote on the future of jobs in a stint-centered world, CNN recently reported that if you’re going to work with a millennial,  you need to make it engaging, innovative, and perk-friendly.

The 2010 Pew Research Center study on social trends reported that the millennials are to be one of the most educated generations in history and also accountable for half of the employees in the world. Hence the reason for the stint position. While Gen Y understands social media and networking trends like the custom playlists on their iPods and know how to find what’s missing and create a site out of it, they also have shorter attention spans, difficulty receiving negative critiques, and do not strive to stay within a company for 15+ years. The millennial mind is a wandering one which relies on taking time off from work and going on regular vacations. All par for the course of staying connected to contacts and creating new ones!

So how do you work with a millennial? It’s a popular theory to say that they are attempting to delay becoming adults or attempting to Peter Pan their lives away by enrolling in more post-college studies in graduate schools. It’s also popular, as mentioned by Gen-Y consultant Jason Dorsey, to hold within oneself a sense of entitlement or, “It’s showing up and just feeling like people owe you things.”

Not the case for all millennials though, particularly as we face the unemployment rate. Hiring and working with millennials, whether you yourself are one or not, is going to require schedules to get chucked out, time management on specific projects as well as specific examples of your expectations, and constructive feedback that really does help to be on the agenda. Blocking social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter won’t be helpful in getting the Gen Y’ers to focus on one thing and one alone. It’s a losing battle. Better to allow them to do what they do best- multitask at work if you’re looking for big results. Happiness is of utmost importance to the millennial with making a real difference also included in that list.

And their breath of fresh air may be just what a company needs to revitalize or break new ground.

There was a time when Kansas kids took the outdoors for granted. They just seemed to grow up outside.
That time was spent working on the family farm, chasing frogs down by the ponds, wandering along creeks and rivers and scaring up rabbits along the fence rows.
As times have changed, though, trends have put many youth in indoor-based activities, but some agencies are working to reverse that movement and get more kids into the great outdoors.
All summer long, the Seward County K-State Research and Extension office are doing just that with its Summer Fun Thursdays, and this Thursday, youth from Seward along with children from 5 to 10 years of age from neighboring Meade County will invade Arkalon Park as the Extension presents its annual day camp.
Seward County K-State Agent Mike Hanson said as of Wednesday, close to 40 youngsters had signed up for the camp between the two counties.
This year’s camp is being planned by 4-H member Cheyenne Holder, and Hanson said the event will have a pig theme this year.
“The theme of it is going to be is ‘Squealin’ Piglet Fun,’” Hanson said.

Activities for this year’s camp include nature hikes, water games, snacks and team building exercises, and Hanson said lunch will be made for campers.
Seward County youth will depart from the Extension office around 9:30 a.m. Thursday and return around 2 p.m. Hanson said campers do not need to be 4-H members to attend.
“It’s a non-traditional programming event,” he said. “We’re including a bunch of our older 4-H youth to help with leadership camp. They’re going to get a new shirt, and hopefully, learn a little bit about bugs and paw prints.”
Hanson said the day camp is simply a fun educational day for the kids.
“Everything’s going to have a pig theme to it, but we are not going to have a throwing or rolling in mud contest or anything like that,” he said. “We’re going to make a mud pie type dessert since pigs like to roll in mud.”
Hanson said between Seward and Meade counties, a total of about 60 kids will get to partake in Thursday’s activities.
“The price on it will be $6,” he said.” We’re just wanting to get kids out and get them physically active.”
Forecasts from the National Weather Service are calling for triple-digit temperatures to continue for this week, and Hanson said campers will be provided with plenty of water to keep them hydrated and cool in the summer heat.
“We just want to try to get more kids involved in this day camp and our Summer Fun Thursdays,” he said.
Hanson and fellow Seward agent Kathy Bloom gave a budget presentation to the county commission at its June 20 meeting, and Hanson said more young people are becoming involved in the Extension’s programs.
“We have 32 youth involved that are not in traditional 4-H clubs,” he said.
Hanson came on board with the Extension as an agent in 2004. He said the day camp event had been in place a few years prior to that. There was an absence for a few years, but after getting new personnel in place, the program was reinstituted about five years ago.
“We try to have a different theme every year,” he said. “One year was Wild West Day Camp. Another was a Hawaiian theme. We try to keep things a little different all the time.”
Hanson said most of the other Summer Fun Thursday activities have been filled up for this year.
“Our shooting sports still has some room,” he said. “We’re getting a lot of good participation from the kids.”
The day camps are rotated on a yearly basis between Arkalon Park and Meade Lake State Park, which Hanson said allows for flexibility in planning activities.
“With Meade, they get to go canoeing if the weather’s right and have more games versus nature hikes,” he said.
Hanson said 4-H activities and team building exercises are thrown in to the mix to help teach kids about the organization.
“It’s fun for them, but we want them to learn a little bit,” he said.
To sign up for the day camp, Hanson said participants need to come by the Extension office for paperwork.
“For the day camp,  they need to get in here by Tuesday if at all possible,” he said. “We will accept them up until that day. For transportation reasons, we need to know who we’ve got. They can come in here and pay their $6.”
Campers also need to fill out a Kansas 4-H participation form for medical emergencies.
“It takes about five minutes to fill out, and we can get them taken care of,” Hanson said.
