Unix - Command line Arguments

What is command line argument?

Those values which we pass at the time of running the shell scripts are known as Command line values(arguments). Command line arguments are treated as special variables within the script. They can be changed with the shift command.

The command line arguments are enumerated in the following manner $0, $1, $2, $3, $4, $5, $6, $7, $8 and $9.

0 is special in that it corresponds to the name of the script itself.

$1 is the first argument, $2 is the second argument and so on.

Point to Remember: To reference after the ninth argument you must enclose the number in brackets like this ${nn}.

You can use the shift command to shift the arguments 1 variable to the left so that $2 becomes $1, $1 becomes $0 and so on, $0 gets scrapped because it has nowhere to go, this can be useful to process all the arguments using a loop, using one variable to reference the first argument and shifting until you have exhausted the arguments list.

Built-In commandline parameters:

$# represents the parameter count. It is useful for the loop structure to process each argument.

$@ expands to all the parameters separated by spaces (single-dimensional array like). With this $@ we can pass these values to another program or function.

$$ returns the process id of the shell invoked to execute shell script.

Print Statistical Formula inside a Excel Sheet while calculating statistical equations or sums

Today, I met many students who are facing a problem of printing formula of statistics while calculating sums of statistics inside an Excel Sheet. So question is how do I print such formula inside excel sheet same as we write in our general notebook.

Consider Example-1 (With MS Office 2003), If I am calculating Combined mean and I wants to print the formula of combined mean inside the excel sheet same as below:

Consider Example-2 (With MS Office 2007), If I am calculating Geometric Mean and I wants to print the formula of Geometric mean inside the excel sheet same as below:

To print such formulas inside an excel sheet, Perform the following steps:

Go to Insert → Object, Find “Microsoft Equation 3.0”, Select it and Click “OK” button.

After, you will see the below Equation Toolbar:

Now, you have the driving right, drive it with Statistics !!

Unix - Fetching ASCII Code of any Character and Character Value from the ASCII Code

It can be done in 2 ways:

Android - Working With Calendar and Managing Compatibility With Froyo

Today i came across an article, in that article i found a great thing that the Calendar URI in FROYO 2.2 version is changed from content://calendar/calendars to content://com.android.calendar/calendars.

To manage the compatibility with such Calendar Code across all the version, we need to handle Old URI along with the New URI, we can handle it in following way:

Uri CalendarUri, EventsUri;

EventsUri = Uri.parse("content://calendar/events");

Remove recycle bin from your desktop

To remove a "Recycle Bin" from your desktop, perform same as the below steps:

Click on START -> Run
write "regedit" and press Enter
Now, traverse to this entry in registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
Delete it. This action should remove recycle bin from your desktop.

Gmail - Filter email using "Create a Label / Create a Filter"

Today i came across one great thing that if i want to receive/store the incoming email from the particular party/person/company inside the particular folder (i.e. Label/Filter in terms of Gmail), For example: I have made filter for "Android Developer" group's email inside the Android Developers label with red color.

For more information, check below image:

As same you can also create as many Label/Filter as you want. Follow the below steps to do the same:

Step - 1: After login with Gmail, you will see the "6 more" options at the left-hand side, click on it, then select the "Create new label".

Step - 2: Now it will show the below dialog box, in which you need to write the Label name that you want to create, For example: Android Developer, HDFC, Yahoo, Naukri-Jobs, etc.

Step - 3: After creating a Label, Open any e-mail from your Inbox, and select the option as depicted in below image:

Step - 4: Now, It will show the below box, in which you can write the "From", "Has the words", "Doesn't have", etc. to filter the email.

Step - 5: Now, Here you have to "apply a Label" which you have created ago. If you have old email laying inside your inbox from the particular person/company and want to filter inside a label, then Don't Forget to Tick the checkbox: Also apply filter to 5 conversations below, here i am having 5 old email so it is giving 5 conversations, it can be any.

As i had published an article earlier on Phishing practice of social engineering(http://pareshmayani.blogspot.com/2010/10/about-phishing.html), there is also a one similar technique known as Vishing.

Vishing is a practice of Social Engineering and do for stealing information or money from consumers using the telephone network.

As Phishing is orchestrated via bogus email and spam messages, same way Vishing is orchestrated via bogus voice messages and phone calls.

Why Vishing?
Vishing is used to steal someone's banking and credit card information so that they can gain access to their Bank account and Credit card account.

How Scammers do Vishing?
Scammers may makes use of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP - By using VoIP, people can talk over their computer lines) and by this, they can do dialings of multiple numbers at the same time. And Generally, spammers may be have a regional phone book or telephone book, and they may dial one-by-one number.

Evaluate Floating point Arithmetic Operation in Unix

In UNIX, as we know, 'expr' is used to evaluate arithmetic operation but it is not used to evaluate floating point valued expression. See the below image for more clarification:

I have found one amazing fact in Unix. i.e. 11 days missing in the month of September, 1752.

Why it is happened in the month of September 1752?

The Gregorian Reformation is assumed to have occurred in 1752 after the 2nd of September. By this time, most countries had recognized the reformation (although a few did not recognize it until the early 1900's.) Eleven days following that date were eliminated by the reformation, so the calendar for that month is a bit unusual.

The Gregorian reformation was adopted by the Kingdom of Great Britain, including its possessions in North America (later to become eastern USA), in September 1752. As a result the September 1752 cal shows the adjusted days missing. This month was the official (British) adoption of the Gregorian calendar from the previously used Julian calendar. This has been documented in the man pages for Sun Solaris as follows. "An unusual calendar is printed for September 1752. That is the month 11 days were skipped to make up for lack of leap year adjustments."
