Hey all. I'll be in DC at Malice Domestic from May 1-May 3. This year will be a particularly active time with the "humor panel" on Friday night. A courageous Elaine Viets will be our moderator with rabble-rousing panelists Jeff Cohen, Don Bruns and Parnell Hall. From there I'll head directly to the auction where Hank Phillippi Ryan and I will cajole money from attendees to benefit a charity for at-risk kids in Maryland. Saturday morn, I'll be on the "social issues" panel. Our moderator is Harriette Sackler with panelists Clea Simon, Marion Moore Hill and Elizabeth Zelvin. And finally, on Sunday afternoon at 2 pm, I'll be at the New Deal Cafe in Greenbelt, MD for a public gathering. I'm looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. If I don't already know you, please stop by to say "hello."
Hey all. Let me tell you, sometimes I just love my job. In addition to my fiction, I also write freelance articles for Local Flavor magazine (http://www.localflavor.com). Today, I went to the SVEDC today and learned about this positive initiative to help farmers and entrepreneurs in one of Albuquerque's most rural areas. You might want to check out info about the center at http://www.svedc.org. Another way to get to know what's happening in this area of my fair city is to go to the Local Foods Festival, May 16. For more info on that, visit http://www.localfoodnm.org

Maintaining Hope

Writers everywhere are wondering what this uncertain economy will bring. Disposable income is drying up. We hear about fewer people buying books, fewer publishers taking chances on unknown or "midlist" novelists. But I think that during times of national worry, books provide entertainment that far outweighs most other media. Think about it: a television show is at most an hour long; a movie might span three. Video games suck a few hours at a pop and sessions watching YouTube do the same. But none of these other media provide the quality of escape a book can -- both in terms of time and imagination. Readers know that books are quiet, they require quiet and give rise to a kind of satisfaction that can't be replicated any other way. Frenzy rarely soothes.

Resolutions

I started the year with more lifestyle/work-process resolutions than in the past. One of the biggies is limiting my online time. While the internet is marvelous and I'm grateful for all it offers, I've become weary AND wary of its distracting nature. A writer needs to listen to her own thoughts. She needs mental quiet. Blogs, websites, games, emails etc are all good in their place, but they can make too much noise and supress creativity if allowed too much into a life. What do you think?

Hey all,

Is it just me or are the holidays even crazier than usual this year? I'm busy writing the next Sasha book and a short story, but wanted to take time out to tell you about my last public event of the season. I'll be at the Borders on the west side of Albuquerque on Sunday, Dec. 21 from noon to five to encourage any last-minute shoppers to buy a personalized, autographed book for a present. Just think, this is a gift NO ONE else will have. So if you've got someone who is difficult to shop for, or know someone who likes to laugh, stop by . . .

Thanksgiving

Here's a special request -- not just from me, but from every novelist I know: If you go shopping during this holiday weekend, please consider buying books for presents. You'll be helping writers continue to do what they love to do AND you'll be giving a gift that will inspire creativity in the reader too. After all, the difference between the written word and other forms of entertainment is that it requires the reader to live and see the created worlds herself. It fires the reader's imagination and takes him places no other medium can possibly achieve.
May your Thanksgiving and vacation be blessed with happiness, health and relaxation.

Okay, that title may lead people to the wrong conclusion. What I'm referring to is a talk I'll give tomorrow to a book club at Albuquerque's conservative synagogue. My newest book has received very interesting responses within the Jewish community; some people think it's "self-loathing" and "anti-Semitic" while others say it accurately tackles the uncomfortable subject of intolerance within a religion. My husband is urging me to wear thicker clothes than usual . . . Me? I think it's going to be an interesting and illuminating discussion. I'll report back once it's over. Wish me luck.

One of New Mexico's greatest writers and nicest men died on Sunday, October 26, 2008 here in Albuquerque. I only knew him for six years but count myself lucky to have had even that short time. What a wonderful man. What a sad, sad day.

Meet me in Baltimore
I'll be at Bouchercon this weekend, hob-knobbing with the literati and generally having a blast with mystery writers and readers from all over the world. My panel is Sunday at 10 am and includes Ann Cleeves, Martin Edwards, Carolyn Wall and Kathy Lynn Emerson. This international panel will discuss the role of location -- its importance and meaning -- in our works. Can't wait. ALSO -- I'll get to see if my blog, Murderati.com, wins the Anthony for which it's been nominated. Wish me luck!

Wrangling with Writers

If you're interested in a small, happy and informative writers' conference, this is the one for you. Wrangling for Writers is an annual event sponsored by the Southwest Society of Authors and based in Tucson, Arizona. It's got everything: agents, editors, publishers and writers -- all focused on helping others progress and enjoy the process. Before I went, I was honored to be invited as a speaker and instructor. Now that I've gone, I'm elated to have had such a wonderful experience. Really . . . it was that good.

On the road again
Hi all,
I'm getting ready for a trip this week to Tucson to teach at the prestigious Wrangling with Writing writers conference. While there, I've got three workshops:
"Keeping the mystery in your mystery" and "Getting the Word Out" Parts 1 & 2. I hope if you're in the area, you'll come to the con. I'm looking forward to sharing what I know about this crazy business with as many people as possible.
