Hotel Ritz is Europe's greatest hotel, an enduring symbol of elegance on one of Paris's most beautiful and historic squares. César Ritz, the "little shepherd boy from Niederwald," converted the private Hôtel de Lazun into a luxury hotel that he opened in 1898. With the help of the culinary master Escoffier, he made the Ritz a miracle of luxury living. In 1979, the Ritz family sold the hotel to Egyptian businessman Mohammed al-Fayed, who refurbished it and added a cooking school. (You may remember that his son Dodi al-Fayed and Princess Diana dined here before they set out on their fateful drive.) Two town houses were annexed, joined by an arcade lined with miniature display cases representing 125 of Paris's leading boutiques. The public salons are furnished with museum-caliber antiques. Each guest room is uniquely decorated, most often with Louis XIV or XV reproductions; all have fine rugs, marble fireplaces, tapestries, brass beds, and more. The marble bathrooms are the city's most luxurious, filled with deluxe toiletries, sumptuous tubs, scales, private phones, cords to summon maids and valets, robes, full-length and makeup mirrors, and dual basins. Ever since Edward VII got stuck in a too-narrow bathtub with his lover of the evening, the tubs at the Ritz have been deep and big.

The Lancaster, in rue de Berri, just off the Champs-Elysées in the heart of Paris, is one of Europes' most charming hotels, with an indisputed reputation for impeccable standards and service. Built in 1889, it was the private house for Monsieur Santiago Drake del Castillo, who had acquired the land ten years earlier from the Prince and Princess de Hennin. The house remained in the Castillo family until 1925, when it was sold to Monsieur Emile Wolf. It had been converted into four flats, one on each floor, but Wolf set about transforming the building into an hotel, which he named The Lancaster. He retained the original features and most of the furniture, maintaining the building's period character when he added four more floors, between 1925 and 1928. The conversion was completed in 1930 with the aid of Wolf's housekeeper, daughter of a famous antique dealer, and together they filled the rooms with antiques and works of art. Until today, the Lancaster has been run as it always was , like a luxurious private home, filled with a fascinating collection of furniture, antique clocks, paintings, chandeliers, lamps, tapestries, velvets, silk and damask, crystal and porcelain... After five months of renovation, the Champs-Elysées most charming hotel has re-opened to unveil the magic of its past spendour brought up to date by the inspiration of Grace Leo Andrieu, that of a nineteenth century town house, a heaven of peace and quiet where our guests may relax after a busy day in the city. The renovation followed a long and detailed plan evolved round the central idea of keeping the essential soul of the place which gave it its charm. Research done on eighteenth and nineteenth century documents produced designs for wall hangings and curtains. A choice of 70 designs were selected from Braquenié and Pierre Frey. The antique furniture was completely restored by specialised master craftsmen. To reach the upper floors, you will use the same lift as before, unique, with its brass and its gold engraved red leather. Its doors open on to deep carpeted landings with rich materials, pleasant lighting and botanic and animal prints from the last century on the walls. Each of the 60 rooms and suites has kept its individual touch.

The Saint James Paris has 48 bedrooms and suites, all of them are spacious, quiet, and individually decorated with the rooms on the top floor having their own interior patios. This chateau-styled boutique hotel is blessed with a remarkable location, on the Place des Vosges, in the Marais, in the heart of historic Paris. It is housed in an eighteenth-century mansion, and the décor is full-tilt historical - no stark modernism on display, and nothing that could reasonably be called "minimal." Instead one finds tapestries, oak beams, luxurious fabric wall coverings, striped period furniture, even reproduction oil paintings.

The entrance canopy is of art nouveau style wrought iron, the suites are detailed by ornate cornicing and ornamental plasterwork on the walls, original fireplaces, polished wooden floors and tall French windows opening on to wrought iron balconies. Interiors of the suites have been designed by Joseph Caspari, the well known Parisian architect. Draped Indian silks, handcrafted classical furniture in rich dark woods, subtle lighting and limited edition prints make impressive but indulgent rooms. Bathrooms are spacious and luxurious, many tiled with Parisian style tailings, fitted with spa baths and showers.

You are a bon vivant who does not wish to share life's finer pleasures in the public glare. Where do you go? Make a note of Hôtel Vernet, quietly situated around the corner from the Arc de Triomphe. It is hardly well-known although many of its guests are. They are happy to get lost in the privacy of its sublime interiors. The hotel revolves around the amazing little dining room whose leaded glass fin de siécle ceiling came from the workshop of Gustave Eiffel. This Michelin two-star restaurant is directed by Eric Briffard, a chef inspired, well-travelled and passionate. "I cook in a variety of styles" he says, "what counts is what's good." Either side of the lobby are the Jaipur Bar and a handsome salon where you can enjoy a cigar. The concierge has magical means of finding the most elusive to-die-for tickets.

Opened in 1862 by Napoleon III, the hotel's famous Café de la Paix has hosted the literary and artistic elite of Paris for over 100 years. Ostensibly art deco in style, guests are treated to five-star luxury in recently remodelled rooms and suites. The ‘pièce de résistance', however, is the Salon Opéra, the hotel's grandest function venue with ornate gold leaf mouldings, stained-glass windows and a stunning domed ceiling.

In 1857, the year of the inauguration of the Suez Canal, Mr. Edmond Petit ordered the construction of private town house at number 14, rue Jean Goujon, which was later to become number 12. For the Parisians of that period and indeed ever since, this district was very fashionable. In 1923, after he had sold the hotel George V, Mr. Simon André Terrail (father of the present owner of the famous restaurant "La Tour d'Argent"), bought this private town house in order to accommodate his foreign customers in a comfortable hotel. Consequently the San Régis became the second home of many celebrities as Lauren Bacall, Gene Kelly, Romy Schneider, Jacqueline Bisset, Candice Bergen, Louis Malle, etc. ... Most of the furniture of the hotel George V moved to the hotel San Régis, and still today, they greatly contribute to the charm of that refined property. With exclusive boutiques and embassies as its sophisticated neighbours, the hotel maintains an air of simple yet authentic elegance. It is easy to pass this marvellous hotel by: a small sign is the only thing that advertises its presence. Beyond the small foyer you find a comfortable, ornately decorated lounge area and small dining room where you can enjoy a quiet drink and/or lunch and dinner. The bedrooms are large and handsomely furnished, and the bathrooms are very modern and thoughtfully stocked. Huge double doors buffer sounds from other rooms. The rooms that front the Rue Jean-Goujon are favoured with a view across to the tip of the imposing Eiffel Tower, but courtyard rooms are sheltered from street noise. Last but not least, the hotel’s restaurant is probably one of the best in Paris and very inexpensive.
