in February. What’s not to love! The days are getting longer, the average temps
are rising and hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails and cross country ski
trails are groomed and ready. Itasca State Park reports nine inches of snow
fell January 29! There is a Quick link on the home page of www.parkrapids.com to snowmobile trail reports.

1 p.m. Saturday, February 9 at Itasca State Park. The demonstration location
will be chosen closer to the date of the event. Logging using horses was common
to this area in the late 1800s. Watch lumberjacks fell trees with a 2-man
cross-cut saw, buck the log into sections, skid the logs with the
teamster’s trained horses and cross-haul logs onto a
horse-drawn sled. Members of the Lake Itasca Region Pioneer Farmers will be on

Parents and kids alike have mixed emotions about being excited for school to start and sad that summer is ending. Here are a few tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

Making the First Day Easier

Remind your child that there are probably a lot of students who are uneasy about the for the first day of school. Teachers know that students are anxious and will make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible.

Point out the positive aspects of starting school: It will be fun!
She'll see old friends and meet new ones. Refresh her positive memories
about previous years, when she may have returned home after the first
day with high spirits because she had a good time.

Find another child in the neighborhood with whom your youngster can walk to school or ride with on the bus.

If you feel it is appropriate, drive your child (or walk with her) to school and pick her up on the first day.

Eating During the School Day

Most schools regularly send schedules of cafeteria menus home. With this advance information, you can plan on packing lunch on the days when the main course is one your child prefers not to eat.

Try to get your child's school to stock healthy choices such as
fresh fruit, low-fat dairy products, water and 100 percent fruit juice
in the vending machines.

Developing Good Homework and Study Habits

Create an environment that is conducive to doing homework.
Youngsters need a permanent work space in their bedroom or another part
of the home that is quiet, without distractions, and promotes study.

Schedule ample time for homework.

Establish a household rule that the TV set stays off during homework time.

Supervise computer and Internet use.

Be available to answer questions and offer assistance, but never do a child's homework for her.

Take steps to help alleviate eye fatigue, neck fatigue and brain
fatigue while studying. It may be helpful to close the books for a few
minutes, stretch, and take a break periodically when it will not be too
disruptive.

If your child is struggling with a particular subject, and you aren't able to help her yourself, a tutor can be a good solution. Talk it over with your child's teacher first

last week’s planning meeting. “But it’s not that far away,” he said of
the 66th annual event that is expected to engage 200 to 400 community
volunteers and area businesses to welcome 125 to 150 members of the
media – newspaper, radio, TV and magazine.

The Fish Hook chain of
lakes was chosen because the Fish Hook River is the focal point of Park
Rapids, Mackedanz said. Highway 71 provides access to the four lakes
and it heads up to Itasca State Park. “And all four are good early
lakes.”

“2013 is the right year,” said Carol Altepeter of Explore
Minnesota. “Park Rapids is known for its events. The difference this
time is, we’re bringing the state in. We’re all in the same boat,” she
joked.

Chamber executive Katie Magozzi, who will work as “event
planner,” noted the board unanimously supported hosting the Governor’s
Opener. Park Rapids was the site of the event in 1979, when Gov.
Al Quie caught “one of the best stringers of walleye ever held by a
Minnesota governor,” the Park Rapids Enterprise reported. A grinning
governor held up nine lunkers, with his guide, Tim Young, at his side. A
7 pound, 14 ounce walleye was the biggest of the bunch.

This
year’s schedule of events includes a Fishing Host dinner Thursday evening.
Friday, “the community will come together to showcase” the area’s
attributes, Mackedanz said. A variety of activities will be offered to guests, such as games
of golf or tours of Itasca State Park, the wildlife refuge, fisheries
and other area attractions. A community picnic, beginning in the
late afternoon, will be free of charge and open to the public. An event
for kids is also being planned for Friday. The Park Rapids
Rotary, Lions, Downtown Business Association and Lakes Area Arts Council
have agreed to assist. Hubbard County Coalition of Lake Associations
has also pledged support. The governor is expected to host live TV interviews during the evening. Fishing host pairing will complete the day’s events. Organizers are seeking 110 qualified fishing hosts willing to serve as
“community ambassadors,” who will take the event’s guests out on the
water. Jason Durham and Blake Johnson are coordinating this. The governor may decide to drop a line at midnight, or wait until sunrise. Breakfast will be served on the opener followed by a send-off ceremony.
A shore lunch will be held Saturday over the noon hour for registered
event attendees, committee members, sponsors and fishing hosts.A celebration reception and dinner will cap the day, when winning raffle tickets will be drawn.

Altepeter reported Waconia, the city hosting the event in May, worked
with a $325,000 budget, $80,000 of it in cash, the remaining in-kind
donations. “$70,000 to $80,000 (cash) is realistic for Park Rapids,” she
said. These funds will be raised through raffle ticket sales
for the Crestliner boat package, valued at $27,900, and Smokey Hills
Outdoor Store Ice Castle icehouse, a $15,500 value, as well as cash
donations. Both the boat and icehouse were donated. To date, the Chamber has raised nearly $8,000 through raffle ticket sales and $1,000 in seed money from Waconia. Individuals can now go to parkrapids.com and click on Minnesota 2013
Governor’s Fishing Opener to find volunteer application forms, connect
to the Explore Minnesota website, learn about sponsorship opportunities
and more. Or call the Chamber at 732-4111.

An executive committee
has formed as a “conduit for the bigger picture,” Mackedanz said. And
volunteer opportunities abound – from raffle sales, boat towing,
coordinators, registration, clean up, kitchen, food and beverage serving
and more.

The Governor’s Fishing Opener has been a tradition in
Minnesota since 1948. The event was designed to promote the development
of Minnesota’s recreation industry, and in recent years, it has served
as a kick-off celebration for the summer tourism season. Travel and
tourism generate $11.3 billion in leisure and hospitality gross sales in
Minnesota annually, according to Explore Minnesota.
In 2012, world record-holding lumberjacks will be back to
compete. Logging Days, Park Rapids' signature event for more than 25 years, was
established to honor the rich heritage of logging in this neck of the woods.
Logging events feature World Champion and World Record-Breaking Lumberjacks and
Lumberjills competing in wood chopping and sawing contests. Points these
skilled competitors earn here will count toward the Lumberjack World
Championships in Hayward, WI.

Thankful Dirt, Darren and Molly Matthews, the Indie/Americana
Des Moines-based songwriting duo Thankful Dirt, developed their musical artistry
steeped in Iowa's music scene, a scene as fertile as Iowa soil. Since joining
musical forces in October of 2008, they've performed at various Iowa venues,
including coffee shops, benefits, and area bars. Quality performances attract a
loyal following. Though their musical backgrounds differ, electricity sparks
when they write and perform songs. Molly's voice- ethereal, complex, and
evocative- compliments Darren's masterful guitar playing.

The Hollands are seasoned concert performers, engaging
audiences with their intimate merrymaking. They are a full-time internationally
touring family based in the US via Australia. Their knack for engaging
audiences and rousing a sing-a long separates them from the typical observation
performance. Jana's deep minor tones and angelic voice offer solace to any who
listen. She sets the mood and embraces your mind with her poetic yet ground
level lyrics. Delicate and beautiful harmonies are added by daughter and gifted
vocalist, Graciana Holland. Craig, a native of Australia, began his music
career playing punk, including a 7 year stint in Ballydowse, a Chicago-based
Celtic Punk band recorded by famed indie producer, Steve Albini. Craig offers
the element of unique sound that pulls the music of The Hollands! in a
different direction than traditional folk. When Craig is playing the Taylor
acoustic, the rhythms are almost Celtic by nature. Family focused shows include
the youngest Holland, "Banjo" on the Cajon’ and other percussion
instruments.

By the end of their performance, audiences will feel like
they are part of the band. This is the experience and magic that happens when
The Hollands! come to town.

The Hollands! are members of the International Folk
Alliance, Concerts in Your Home- USA, Australia and Europe.

bluegrass band with over 100 years of musical experience. With original tunes
of tales, life lessons, and love, No Grass Limit truly sets themselves apart
from any bluegrass band. And, for all you traditional bluegrassers out there,
fear not, we definitely play the songs you know and love.

Winston Drei Tod We were all born in Minnesota; as a result
that is where we are from. We all met up at the tender age of 18. The three of
us have diverse backgrounds in making noises with certain pitches. We all have
a job in the band that shapes the way the different pitches are formed and put
together. That's the magic of Winston Drei Tod. Without one of us, it would be
a completely different by-product.
evocative- compliments Darren's masterful guitar playing.

Alliance, Concerts in Your Home- USA, Australia and Europe.

from any bluegrass band. And, for all you traditional bluegrassers out there,
fear not, we definitely play the songs you know and love.

Good Noise Eclectic music by eclectic people. Good Noise

and keys, Katie Houg; vocals, cello and saxophone, Brett Cease; drums, Mark

It was record breaking all over the state of Minnesota. 60's, 70's and dare I say maybe an 80 degree minute or two. But those of us who have lived here all our lives knew better than to put away the winter jackets, or buy annuals for the back yard. We KNEW it was going to feel like winter at least one more day. And here it is! Snowflakes and all.

But we know, just as sure as we know the sun will rise tomorrow, that spring will be back to stay soon. I found these tips online and thought now would be a good time to blog about them. If you use any of the below tips, send your best vacation shots in the Park Rapids Area and I'll post them here!

1. Power up

Learn to manage power—dead batteries
ruin great photo ops. Always take two sets of batteries and a charger,
says Jorge DaSilva, manager of Henry's School of Imaging. Use one set in
the camera while the others set charges.

Or invest in a
super-long-lasting, clip-on, rechargeable Lithium Ion power pack, which
can be used with most digital cameras, suggests photo instructor Larry
Frank, a senior product specialist at photo wholesaler DayMen Photo
Marketing Inc.

The digital camera's LCD screen is a power hog—turn it off and use the optical view finder most of the time, Frank says.
Hint: Do use the LCD when shooting close-ups to help avoid inaccurately framed shots.

Find
out what kind of power adapter you need for foreign countries—possibly a
transformer or maybe just a plug adapter—and get it before you leave,
says freelance nature and travel photographer Danny Catt. Travel-ready universal adapters that fit most cameras and outlets worldwide are now available. If you can't tell what you need from the camera's manual, ask the retailer where you bought it

2. Protect your gear

Digital
cameras are very susceptible to water damage. After one of Catt's
cameras got a little damp, "It was toast," he says. Stay away from
water, and carry your camera in a waterproof bag.

Add a pack of silica gel to your camera bag to reduce moisture further, DaSilva suggests. You can buy one in camera stores.

When
going through airport security, put memory cards in the plastic tray
provided to avoid x-rays, metal detectors, or anything with a magnetic
field.

3. Pack enough memory

The
camera's manual should tell you how many shots at a given size and
quality you can store on your memory card. Use this information to
calculate the storage required for each picture, and then multiply by
the number of pictures you expect to take

Conserve memory
space by using lower resolution for shots you know you'll want to only
print small or send in email, says DaSilva.
Hint: The largest files have the highest resolution. These files are the ones you need to use for making jumbo print enlargements.

Buy all the storage you need and maybe a little more before you travel, Catt says, so you can be sure it works.

Exploit
your digital camera's greatest feature: Edit as you go—delete shots
that don't work. You’ll save memory and get a good idea of what shots
you have and what shots you still need to take.
Hint:
Take the camera's AV cord (virtually all come with one), and plug it
into a hotel room TV to get a better look at the pictures. If you travel
a lot, get a camera that has playback for different television systems
around the world.

4. Know your camera

Most
digital cameras don't take the picture the split second you click the
shutter, Catt notes. Try to anticipate the shot you want—click just
before your subject fully emerges from the surf, for example. Then check
the LCD to make sure you got it. If not, shoot again.

When
setting exposure, if in doubt, err toward underexposure (too dark),
Frank advises. Overexposed digital camera shots are prone to burnouts—bright parts of the picture rendered as pure white.
Hint: Avoid shots that include the sun, Catt says. If you have to shoot in full sunlight, shoot with the sun behind the camera.

Understand
and exploit your camera’s creative manual options, Frank says. "Use a
fast shutter speed to stop action, for example, or a slow shutter speed
to create a pleasing blur when shooting a waterfall or something with
implied movement."

Also, get to know and then exploit
your camera’s advanced digital features, Catt urges. Many digital
cameras help you shoot pictures that you can later "stitch" into
panoramas using a computer. Some will even apply special effects, such
as black and white, sepia tone, and polarization. "Sometimes you have to
think outside the photographic box," he says.

5. Compose carefully

Make
the main subject BIG. Fill the camera’s frame with it, so viewers can’t
miss it. "Assume your audience has the attention span of a
three-year-old," Frank advises. Don’t be afraid to get up close or to
use your camera’s Magnify or Zoom feature to focus attention on your
subject.

More often than not, avoid placing your main
subject dead center. Imagine a tic-tac-toe grid overlaying the picture
frame, DaSilva suggests. Try to place the subject at one of the grid's
intersections.

DaSilva also suggest that you look for
natural frames in the scene to better compose the main subject—a church
spire framed by the arches of a cloister, for example.

When
shooting landscapes and sunsets, Catt says, decide which is pictorially
more important: land, water, or sky. If land or water, place the
horizon in the top third of the picture, if sky, place it in the bottom
third. Avoid putting the horizon in the middle.

Catt also
suggests that you look for lines in the scene—a road or footsteps in
the sand—and try to frame the picture so the lines lead the eye from the
left toward your main subject.

For more suggestions on how to take a picture, especially that special photo you want to use in your holiday mailing, read 9 tips: How to photograph holidays and special occasions.

6. Know what to shoot—and when

Shoot
more often in the half hour to two hours before and after sunrise and
sunset. The low-angle light at these times produces dramatic and
pleasing results, says DaSilva.
Hint: He also
suggests that, when shooting in low light—outside or inside—you always
use a lightweight mini tripod to hold the camera steady for the slower
shutter speeds required.

"Try and look below the surface"
when photographing your travels, Frank advises. Look for shots that
capture something of the local ambience and culture.

Check
calendars ahead of time for festivals and other special events you can
shoot. Check out harbor areas and amusement parks. Shoot farmers'
markets early in the morning when locals are shopping.
Hint: Learn a few words of the local language, and always ask people before taking their pictures. Most people will happily agree.

7. Add stunning photo effects

Cropping
a photo can change an average photo into a dramatic one, especially if
you crop "off center." Before you delete what looks like a bad shot,
take another look and see if you can crop a corner or a portion of it.
You can crop photos, remove red eye, and apply other cool photo effects
with photo-editing programs, like Windows Live Photo Gallery, a part of Windows Live Essentials. You can download Photo Gallery and Windows Live Essentials for free.

Edit photos with Windows Live Photo Gallery

Windows 7

Windows Vista

Hint:
Before you start editing, make a working copy of your original image by
saving it with a new file name. You can do this by opening the image
and typing, for example, bw (for “black and white”) at
the end of the filename when you save it to differentiate the working
image from the original. For example, if the image file name is "Leaf,"
save the image as "Leafbw." When you do all of your editing on your
working copy of the image, you can always start over with a fresh copy
of the original if you don't like the results. Windows Live Photo
Gallery has a convenient Revert to original button that
you can use if you don’t want to save any of your editing changes after
previewing them, but it’s still a good idea to save a copy of the
original.

You can easily convert color photos to
black and white by using your favorite image-editing program. With some
camera models you can even do this in the camera before downloading the
image to your computer. After the image is on your computer, you can
use your image-editing program to adjust contrast and brightness to
create a photograph that's reminiscent of an Ansel Adams print.
Hint:
Silhouettes look terrific in black and white, as do old buildings. The
effect adds drama. But be sure to reserve this technique for landscapes
or buildings. Photos of family members in black and white may not be as
warm as you want them to be.

Combine black and white and
color in one image to dramatize your subject. For example, make the
background of your shot of a little girl in a flowering garden black and
white, and leave your main subject—the girl picking a flower—in color.
You can apply this and other cool effects to your images with many of
today's digital imaging software packages, like Adobe Photoshop Elements. Amazing photo effects like these used to be available only to professional photographers.

Can’t
fit the whole mountain range or seascape into your camera’s frame? Try
shooting multiple photos of the scene and using your computer to stitch
them into a stunning panorama with Windows Live Photo Gallery.

Create a photo panorama in Windows Live Photo Gallery

Windows 7

Windows Vista

If you want even more perspectives on your subject than a regular panorama gives you, try Microsoft Photosynth. Photosynth uses Microsoft Research Image Composite Editor,
Springs sure seems to be in the air, and it will be time to get out the lawn mower and mow your grass soon. I thought I'd post the 5 best ways to kill your grass! Do NOT do these things if you want a beautiful yard this summer.

Cutting too short. Each time you mow, only
remove about 1/3 of the grass blade. Shorter clippings break down more
easily, allowing some of the natural nitrogen to return to the soil. If
you cut too much at one time, the long clippings can cause stress on the
grass, inhibiting healthy growth. Removing only a small amount of the
blade each time you mow is a good practice and will give you the best
quality turf.

Mowing in the same pattern repeatedly.
We all have our habits, but mowing your lawn in the same pattern all
year is one you need to break. Mowing grass in the same direction all
the time can mat down the turf and inhibit growth. By varying the
pattern in which you mow your grass, you will avoid missing or double
mowing areas and reduce wear on the turf. This will encourage a
healthier, more beautiful lawn. Now I understand why some of the men in
my neighborhood sometimes mow their grass to look like a checkerboard,
and other times like the outfield at a ball park—they're mixing things
up to keep their lawn healthy.

Bagging your clippings.
While bagging clippings is a common practice, mulching with your grass
clipping is much more beneficial to your lawn. Mulching returns
essential nutrients, such as nitrogen, back to the soil. If you do
decide to bag, be sure to compost your clippings and reuse on site.

Ignoring the roots.
Don't just focus on managing the parts of the lawn you can see. Caring
for the grass' roots and soil is one of the most important things you
can do now to ensure healthy growth year round. Consider taking a soil
sample and having a local university extension program or your local
landscape supplier provide a soil analysis. The results will give a
measure of fertility based on nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium levels,
and can help determine the best type of fertilizer to use throughout
the year.

Cutting with blunt mower blades. A
dull mower blade will shred grass blades creating entryways for disease.
Sharpen the mower blade to a thickness of about 1/64 of an inch to keep
the blade strong and but not too sharp. Be sure the blade is balanced,
which will give you a clean cut and avoid damage to the mower. If you're
unsure how to sharpen the blade, as an expert at your local home
improvement store for help. You always want to keep good lawnmower safety in mind.

If you have some tips for beautiful lawns, post them here! We have visitors come to the Park Rapids area and RAVE about the beauty they see all around them.

Ice Sounds at Bear Paw Resort in Park Rapids
