One of the fascinating themes of Acts is the clear hand of God in the development and expansion of the church. Without the benefit of a “Committee on Evangelism” God launched a global missionary movement. He did this through a series of surprising providences, not the least of which are the 2 conversions that Luke describes in chapters 9 and 10. As we consider the conversion of Saul this week and later the conversion of Cornelius, realize that Luke is not simply recording interesting facts of early church life, but that he is chronicling his own orchestrated stages of church expansion. God’s hand has not disappeared from his church. He continues to shape, move, send, and empower his church in the 21st Century

Although Christ had commissioned his disciples for global discipleship a fair amount of time had passed before it occurred to any of the Jerusalem saints that they should take the gospel to Samaria or greater Judea. Persecution became the necessary nudge to launch the first missionary movement. Persecution was the occasion for missionary expansion, and preaching was the method, and God providentially chose ordinary, non-apostles like Stephen and Phillip as the instruments for this first wave of evangelism. Little has changed in God’s program in 21 centuries.

Acts 7 is Stephen’s defense to the spurious charges leveled against him at the end of chapter 6. As you read this chapter in preparation for Sunday’s sermon, look for more than a condensed history of Israel. Stephen is making an appeal to the conscience of the nation and a defense of the new work of God called the church. His sermon is a powerful denunciation of Israel’s shallow and death faith and their need to embrace God’s new temple—the church.

Acts 6 includes two related but separate events. The first has to do with the third assault on the unified gospel message of the church to the world. Satan has used outside enemies (Sanhedrin), insider sin (Ananias & Sapphira), and now internal dissention. We should know that enemies of the gospel will keep on pounding on the church with whatever cudgels that seem effective to get us off our game and silence God’s life-changing Word. Let’s not let that happen!

MN State Speech and Debate Tournament

Dear PLBC,

The Speech and Debate competitive year is starting! Tatianna Bluel is competing, for her final year, and would like to invite all to come and judge at our first event. Also, Tammy in her role as State Rep, is responsible for putting on this tournament. If you could keep her in your prayers over the next few weeks, it would be greatly appreciated.

On February 2-4, 2012 Minnesota will host the “Freeze Your Phrases” Qualifier. This is an NCFCA (National Christian Forensics and Communications Association) MN state Speech and Debate Tournament in Brooklyn Center, MN.

Approximately 80 home educated students along with their families will travel from Minnesota, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska to compete at this tournament.

The competition consists of ten different speech events and two types of debate. Because the league trains teenagers to communicate with people from all walks of life, we need judges from the community who may or may not have any experience judging speech or debate. Although we also use NCFCA alumni and parents to judge, we depend on community judges to evaluate the students from a fresh, `every-man` perspective, so NO experience is required. You just need to be able to listen well, make choices, have graduated from high school and be over 18 years of age.

This is how you can help: Register today to judge one or more of these events during the tournament. Because the NCFCA is the third largest speech and debate league in the country and has such great student participation, we are faced with the monumental task of finding hundreds of community judges to evaluate our competitors. We need you!

In exchange for your three hour commitment, you will receive a clear and straightforward orientation on the judging tools by our helpful and friendly judge orientation staff, you will be exceptionally well-fed by our fabulous hospitality staff and hopefully be thoroughly impressed and entertained by our incredible speakers!

If you`d like to judge multiple rounds, we`d love to have you. Once you are oriented for both speech and debate, you can judge as many events as you would like.

The indicated time allows for check-in and Judges` Orientation. You do not need to arrive at the tournament site prior to the stated start time.

If you are interested in participating, simply go to www.NCFCAJudges.com, click on region V, select the “Freeze Your Phrases” Qualifier and register to judge one or more events. After you have registered, will you please forward this website address to a friend and ask them to join you for this wonderful event? Honestly, we could not provide such an important, enriching experience for our students without you. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you!

Event to be held at Brookdale Covenant Church, 5139 Brooklyn Blvd.

Tammy Bluel
