Meet Theresa Durbin, aka "Durbie",
Vacation Bible School's Upward Bound Hiking Guide

Sitting in the back row of Parkside Church's auditorium nine years ago, Theresa Durbin was overwhelmed by her first Parkside Vacation Bible School (VBS) experience -- not by the number of children in attendance, but by the number of adults.

I was doing the music portion of VBS at my church," recalls Theresa. "But I could never get anybody to help me. We didn't have as many kids, maybe only 100, but at the end of the week, I was exhausted and spent because I was doing it all by myself. So when I brought my boys, Christopher and Joe,that first time, I was looking around and wondering 'Why are all these adults here? What's the deal?'"

Theresa decided to investigate. She was mostly curious as to who all these grown-ups wearing VBS t-shirts were and why they weren't simply dropping off their kids and leaving. Theresa took a seat in the back row of the church and was overcome by the magnitude of service these grown-ups displayed. She watched in amazement as numerous adults performed skits, sang songs, and taught smaller groups of kids.

Service Embodied in Community

As VBS continued, Theresa watched and listened.She heard Bible verses being taught and thought, "We don't do anything like that. What's going on here?" Each day, Theresa came back with her boys and took her seat in the back row, and each day she was moved to tears, realizing that this experience is what service is supposed to be all about. It was an eye-opening experience that changed the Durbin's lives. The roles and attitudes of the adults that volunteered at Parkside's VBS illustrated what service can look like within a community of people. "Service was a way of life, an expression of their faith," notes Theresa. "It wasn't the way I saw it, and you didn't have to beg people. Seeing that in action made me start questioning what I grew up with and how I lived my life. It changed our lives, changed our entire family," explains Theresa.

Theresa recalls how happy Christopher and Joe would be after attending a day at VBS. "It was totally different. Their spirit was different." Christopher and Joe are now 19 and 17, and have gone through all of the junior high and high school youth groups at Parkside. They're now both youth leaders in those groups, and both young men plan to enter the ministry. Theresa laughingly says, "No way, back when we walked through those doors that first VBS week, did we ever think that our boys would end up dedicating their lives to the ministry."

Front and Center

After her first VBS experience at Parkside, Theresa spent about four years attending the church just taking it all in. She was weary from all her work at her previous church where she worked as a youth minister and taught second grade. "I was really entrenched in it, but it wasn't for the right reasons. I was earning, earning, earning. I was so exhausted from all of that, that I just wanted to sit and absorb and not do," says Theresa. After regaining some spiritual strength, Theresa felt she could start serving again and started by teaching the four-year-olds at VBS. By presenting the Gospel to preschoolers in a simple way, Theresa felt she finally understood salvation and was propelled into a renewed sense of ministry. From sitting and crying in the church's back pew to taking center stage leading the full week's worth of skits, Theresa Durbin's VBS experience has turned 180 degrees.

Exhausted, But Not Spent

Having observed Theresa first-hand at this week's Upward Bound VBS, I knew that she must be tired. But she explains that now her exhaustion stems from the physical comedy she and Denita King write, produce and perform. "At my old church, VBS was more of an emotional, inner tiredness," says Theresa. "It was a drained feeling. Now after VBS, I just feel tired. A normal tired. The other felt like something was taken out of you that you never really got back."

What Is Success?

In looking back at this year's VBS, Theresa explains that she feels every year is a huge success as long as the kids go home happy. She credits her skit team partners as well as dedicated volunteer Elizabeth Heisey, director of VBS, and Kelly Coy, Parkside’s coordinator of children's services, whose tremendous organizational skills enabled this year's group of more than 850 children to watch original skits, sing songs, eat snacks, run and play, learn about the Gospel and make crafts -- all in three hours, for five straight days. Theresa commented that she also met quite a few kids whose families don't attend Parkside.

On the last day of this year's VBS, Theresa asked one 7-year-old attendee what she learned this week, "Well, I learned that whenever I'm in trouble or I need anything that Jesus is always there for me."

"These are 7-, 8- and 9-year-olds who can tell you something that they learned about Jesus or the Bible, not that they learned how to sing a hiking song or make a bandanna. That's huge! And even if it's only one child out of 850, then it was a success," says Theresa. But a personal mark of success for Theresa was when her two teenage sons told her at the end of the week, "Mom, we're proud of you."

Parkside Featured on WCRF
Parkside church services will be featured on WCRF 103.3 FM, July 5 - Sept. 27, during the 11am morning service. We’ll be studying the Gospel of Mark with Alistair Begg. Use this as an opportunity for outreach to friends and family and to encourage those who are shut-ins.

Ambassadors in Sport Soccer Camp
There are still openings for the AIS Soccer Camp being held at Bethlehem Baptist Church July 7-11. You can register your child/children, ages 6-16 at the Children’s Ministry table on Sunday, June 28.

Single Moms Summer Study

“Missions Moment” Sunday Series

Embracing Family Fellowship Picnic

Going Green

A Fresh Start

Parkside has gone Green…to the city of Green, that is. On January 1, 2009, a once small congregation located between Akron and Canton became Parkside Church Green Campus. Though your mind may think of the familiar slogan of “reduce, reuse, recycle,” when you hear of something being green, Parkside has jumped head-on into this exciting new area of ministry.

For years, 125 worshippers were utilizing only 10% of the church’s auditorium, but over the past six months, God has brought an additional 200 people to the new Green Campus. Many of the people who attend are young families and young professionals who are looking to connect with others in meaningful relationships. Other folks have been looking for a Bible-centered church and have been long-time listeners of Pastor Alistair Begg through Truth For Life. Over the past few months, the Children’s Ministry classrooms and nurseries are filling up. Wednesday night Bible Studies and the youth ministry have expanded and seem to be meeting the needs of those who desire to go deeper in their walk with Christ. The college and career ministries continue to be a center of growth and service. The leadership, staff, and members are and are amazed by the kind hand of God to work in such wonderful ways.

A Fresh Approach

The Green and Bainbridge Campuses share not only a name and philosophy, they also share in the same senior pastor. You know that Alistair is a man of many gifts and talents but he certainly can’t be in two places at once…or can he? Pastor Alistair Begg arrives in Green every Sunday morning by way of HD technology, allowing the two campuses to be even more connected. The video messages began the first week of the book of Mark series began. God’s timing seemed to be perfect. During the Sunday evening service, the two Green Campus pastors share time teaching and preaching through various books of the Bible.

This fresh approach of starting a second campus using technology was met with some unease. What would it be like watching Alistair Begg on a 9 foot by 16 foot screen? So far, the reaction to the screen has been surprisingly positive. Many agree that after only a few minutes, it is easy to forget that Alistair is not preaching in person. Some are still not sure whether to laugh at a joke when he’s really not there. Still others ask which local florist is arranging the flowers in front of the pulpit and are surprised to hear that they are part of the projected message. Do not let technology scare you. Every other part of the service is live and local. The only portion of the service that is video is the preaching.

In general, Parkside Green Campus is beginning to be known as the church that has “the guy with the Scottish accent on a screen”. It is truly an exciting place to be right now. If you have yet to check out the Green Campus, please feel free to visit any Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. and see for yourself all that God is doing. Maybe you have a friend or family member who lives in the Akron or Canton area. If so, Parkside Church Green Campus is a wonderful place for them to visit!

A Fresh Vision

Please pray for the outreach events the Green Campus will be holding this summer. The Green Campus is committed to a vision of seeing many unbelieving people become committed followers of Jesus Christ. A “How-to Night for Women” is planned for women to refine skills in the everyday life of being a women in the 21^st century. The FUNdamental Tennis camp is for unchurched kids between the ages of 9 and 13. And finally the Green Campus will be going to the poorest neighborhoods in the city of Canton to provide practical needs in an event called the City Love Bus Tour. If you have questions about these events or would like to participate in them, please contact the Green Campus office at greencampus@parksidechurch.com.

Graduating Reflections

In his sermon last Sunday, Alistair challenged us to consider what role the teenages in our church can play in our lives together. This week, we asked graduating senior Kelley MacArthur to talk with some of the graduating seniors who participate in the high school ministry at Parkside to get their thoughts on high school, the church, and what's next in their lives.

High school is a time of love and hate, exploration and confusion. As teenagers, we begin to decide what we will accept as truth. We're often deceptively tempted by the media and magazines, tabloids and advertisements that we see everyday around the towns and cities in which we live to pursue false "truths" that seek to distract us. Peer pressure becomes a reality rather than simply warnings we read in D.A.R.E. booklets, and the stresses of homework, social lives, and our family circumstances occasionally get the best of us.

Adults often scoff at teenagers, possibly because they believe that we are simply dramatic and naïve, and while that may sometimes (and often) be the truth throughout this stage of life, it's often forgetten that these four years are ones that will begin to shape the path we will take for the
rest of our lives.

Thankfully, God graciously loves all people -- including those of us who are 13-18 years old. He has given teenagers throughout the Solon and Bainbridge area (and beyond) Parkside's Student Impact--a place teens can go every week on Thursdays to meet with fellow believers in Christ, to worship, and to learn more about the all-powerful, awesome love of God. Through this group, we were also invited to explore other opportunities, such as small groups, retreats, or service projects through the service team. No matter what the occasion, it always seemed that the love of God radiated, creating connections and bond between students and the leaders, students and the world, and students and their God.

"I have gotten so much out of SI these last four years and sometimes I think I forget about what a blessing it really is to have a group of other Christian believers to spend time with and to grow with," states senior Hillary Wilson. "I am also so grateful for the relationships I have built with other teen believers, and I know that it has helped strengthen my faith. I definitely think that I have grown spiritually in these last four years, but I know that I still have a very long road ahead of me and a lot more growing to do."

Chase Jones, also a senior, explains, "Having been involved with the youth group since 6th grade, it is really cool to see the spiritual metamorphoses my friends and I have undergone since then. Sadly, many people fell off along the way, but we joyfully welcomed other students as well. It has just been incredible to see the way that Christ has worked in all of our lives--transforming us from small silly little kids into committed followers of Christ."

As most of us are dispersing to various places around the globe, I can only pray for my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who I have come to know over these four years that they will keep the love of Jesus in sight and will follow the path He has marked for them, for "wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it (Matt. 7:13-14)."

The most important thing we can do is remember: remember the friendships that have enabled us to grow over the years; remember the truths taught to us from God's word, rather than the deceptions of the world; and remember the exotic, incredible, and soul-saving path revealed to us through the blood Jesus Christ lovingly shed for us upon the cross. It has been a pleasure knowing these wise, wonderful, loving individuals over the past four years, and I am incredibly excited to see how they will spread the love of God throughout the world.

Book Review: Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands by Paul David Tripp

Have you found yourself in a situation like this recently:

A mom in your playgroup confides to you that she is thinking of leaving her husband because “it’s just not working out anymore.”
A fellow co-worker is laid off at your job and comes to you desperate for help as he faces financial hardship.
A close family member diagnosed with terminal illness is struggling to not be angry at God for their predicament.
You discover your daughter has been dealing with an eating disorder for the past two years
Or perhaps it’s your son who you realize is addicted to alcohol and drugs.

If you find yourself here, don’t worry….there is help and hope for you and them in the person and work of our wonderful Redeemer, Jesus Christ.

What do you say to these people? How do you point them to the glorious riches of the gospel? How do you incarnate the person of Jesus Christ to these people? How do you do all of this in a way that is meaningful and substantive without minimizing the issue or being superficial? Paul David Tripp seeks to equip the believer for times like these through his book, Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands.

Book Summary
Jesus Chris is at the forefront of this book as Tripp guides the believer through the intricacies of navigating the human heart. As humans here on earth, we all entered into life as fallen humanity. This fallenness or depravity pervades every part of who I am. Influencing at the deepest core of who I am, sin inexorably shapes my entire worldview. The beauty of the gospel therefore confronts my greatest need: forgiveness of sin.

Tripp sums up the crux of the book explaining, “The central work of God’s kingdom is change. God accomplishes this work as the Holy Spirit empowers people to bring his Word to others. We bring the greatest story ever told, the story of the Redeemer. This is the work of the kingdom of God: people in the hands of the Redeemer, daily functioning as his tools of lasting change.”

The book is divided into fourteen, readable chapters with the first six building a strong foundation for the remaining eight chapters. The final eight chapters develop the paradigm of Love, Know, Speak and Do. With each section of this model, Tripp seeks to equip the believer with sound theological principles coupled with an incarnational, practical, meaningful and robust methodology. This 4-part model of the change process helps people like you and me enter into fellow believer’s lives with the person and work of Jesus Christ. Tripp writes, “We don’t offer people a system; we point them to a Redeemer. He is hope.”

Book Evaluation
For the layperson in the church, this book will be indispensable. Read the book, grasp the truths and principles, and apply them to your daily relationships seeking the Holy Spirit’s enabling power through it all. Tripp has given the church a great resource in this book by showing how you can be involved in the care of God’s people. What a privilege!

IRH is one of those books which come along just once in a while. While I might be overstating its value, I do believe that in the coming years this book will indeed be one you will continue to turn to for help, encouragement and hope.

Parkside Missions: Asia Short Term Trip

“We started singing a few songs and “Joy” (a local believer) listened as we sang. Then I started singing ‘I love you Lord, and I lift my voice…’ and I looked over and there were tears running down her face, and she joined us, singing in the local language. After that we sang ‘Amazing Grace’, which she also knew. The remainder of the 8 hours of riding in the SUV in and out of the earthquake zone basically turned into a songfest, and a great time of worship and fellowship.”

This is an excerpt from the diary of one of the five men from Parkside Church who traveled to East Asia in late April on a short term missions trip. Parkside has a connection with an evangelistic organization based in the region, which asked for help in an outreach program that they have undertaken. The five men were Bob Yanega, who served as the team leader, Josh Johnson from our Green Campus Joe Yates, who is on the Parkside facility staff, Vince Lupe also from Green, and Marvin Mullet, who was making his second trip to the region.

The purpose of the trip was to assist in rebuilding efforts from last year’s devastating earthquake. The goal was to show genuine compassion as well as create open doors for the furtherance of spreading the gospel in this area. As the team discovered, God often uses us in ways that we may not expect and He does more than we can ask or imagine, in His timing and through His methods.

The team was able to transport a number of items for use by the local believers in their ministry. The lack of concern by government officials was an answer to prayer, and the items were joyfully received by the believers in country. The men also had many opportunities along the way to share their faith and give people Bibles, starting in O’Hare Airport in Chicago and continuing all the way back on the final flight to Cleveland.

There were difficulties upon arrival, as the local believers had concerns about recent government interference and surveillance. The team from Parkside asked for prayer concerning this and also spent time helping the local construction team solve several construction problems with a house/community center building that was already underway. Then God opened the door to actually begin work on a new house in another town nearby.

The first day of building was similar to an Amish “barn raising”, except the structure was made of steel, not wood. Brothers and sisters in Christ, from Asia and America, worked alongside one another lifting the heavy sections and pulling ropes to get each of the large frames into place. Then each section had to be bolted to the foundation and to the other secondary framing pieces. On the second day, the team became masonry laborers and bricklayers, as the walls were started. Once again, everyone pulled together to move and set (literally) tons of bricks.

The end of the week brought a day of teaching English to kindergartners, with a curriculum created by Vince Lupe. The original purpose was to maintain good relations with the local government officials who have shown favor to the local Christian organization. Once again, God had bigger plans as the afternoon turned into an opportunity to do a presentation for the students, teachers, parents, and townspeople. Bob was asked to give a speech, in which he included some general statements about our creator God. Then, led by Joe, the team sang ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘Silent Night’, and each song was introduced by Charles Ho (a liaison from California and overall trip leader and interpreter) who explained the significance of each song as it related to the gospel message. It was very well received, and the head official took the team to his son-in-law’s restaurant and bought dinner for all!

After worship in an international church on Sunday, the team was able to hear the testimony of several local young women who have trusted Christ. One common theme was the influence of American English teachers in the country and how their kindness and desire to share the Bible drew these women to Christ. It was cause for further anticipation of the Parkside trips to this region this summer, which will focus on teaching English for two weeks to older students. Only God knows how these future trips may also have an impact for His kingdom!

Amazing Graciousness:
Parkside’s Volunteers Welcome the Visiting Pastors at this year’s Basics Conference

"They're just amazing. They really, truly are amazing."

"Oh, yes. They are unbelievable."

These comments are just a sampling of the praise heaped upon the more than 150 volunteers of this year’s Basic Conference, held on May 11 to 13. “You all have raised the bar as to what a congregation can be. Everyone was so welcoming and polite,” said first-time conference attendee, Pastor Roy Gray, from Cedar Hill Baptist Church in Tarboro, North Carolina. “I’ve been to other churches and conferences and it’s different here.” Seven-time returning attendee, Pastor Ray Harper from Covenant Fellowship in Dallas, Texas, made a point to say, “I want to draw attention to the amazing, amazing service of the volunteers at this place.”

“Every one of them with a smile. I’ve never seen one of them frown. Ever. Ever,” notes fifth-year attendee, Glenn Kirchens, a lay leader from Fowler Community Church in Fowler, Ohio.

Over 150 volunteers, as well as Parkside’s staff members, offered their time, service, and hospitality skills to ensure that this year’s conference ran so smoothly for the 1,000-plus attendees. “It was God’s grace that allowed to us gain useful experience from previous smaller conferences,” says Jacque Platek, administrative assistant for the Basics Conference. “I’m sure we’ll do some things differently next year, especially if we see the same number of attendees,” which was almost double the number from last year’s event.

Leading the Way

Leading this year’s team of volunteers was Cheryl Thompson. Cheryl has been the Hospitality Coordinator for the past five conferences, but has been involved with the conference since it’s early days. At this year’s event, Cheryl appeared to be everywhere at once and was always ready with guidance or a helpful suggestion. Cheryl was amazed and grateful for her team of volunteers, all whom showed up to serve without a single cancellation or no-show. Also lending a hand was John Harabedian. Serving as Conference Concierge since 2001, John offered his service directly to the conference’s visitors by manning the information desk. There were very few questions for which John didn't have a ready answer, and for those rare questions he couldn't answer immediately, he’d find the answer for you quickly.

Out of the Ordinary

The volunteers are not limited to the local members of Parkside. Ann Buckley and her husband, Steve, come from California to volunteer at both the Basics Conference in May and the Truth For Life Weekend in October. When visiting Parkside, the Buckleys are hosted by their good friends and Parkside members, Jim and Virginia Dunn, who moved here from California. Some local volunteers, like Dan Krieger and Brian Casselberry, take time off from their jobs to serve at the conference. Brian, Dan, and Dan’s sister, Laura King, are all fixtures at both the Basics Conference and Truth For Life Weekend and are reliable, humble servants. Even more volunteers offered their homes to visiting pastors as an alternative to the cost of hotel stays.

The Heart of This Church

“Carl Anderson, for example,” notes Pastor Harper. “Carl picks me up at the airport. And for years, he picks me up. I never knew he was an elder at this church. I thought he was just some guy that attended the church. He doesn’t give you the impression that he’s like, ‘Hey, I shouldn’t be driving this van. I’m actually an elder.’ And so I think that deserves noting. These are things you don’t want to change. The heart of this church’s people that serve us is just amazing. It makes all the difference in the world because by not having to worry about all the silly little things, it allows us to focus on what we need to focus on.”

Don’t Blink. You’ll Miss Them

Because the general congregation and community are invited to attend the conference’s evening sessions, the auditorium’s overflow seating areas were tapped. Among their other numerous responsibilities for the three-day event, the Parkside maintenance crew and volunteers must open up the ostensibly solid, immovable walls of the auditorium to allow for extra rows of seating. Maneuvering hand-trucks stacked high with chairs, the crew whisks in, arranges chairs, and then quickly disappears. Voilà, a larger auditorium. At the end of the evening, and just as quickly, the chairs are collected, walls are nestled back into their usual spots, and the crew moves on to their next seemingly impossible project – all done with a smile and a friendly wave.

There is more behind-the-scenes action that is handled expertly by the Parkside media team and volunteers. From lighting to sound, the media team ensures that the attendees can see and hear, not only in the main auditorium, but also in the classrooms throughout the church. The teams’ efforts serve to enhance the overall conference experience. Thanks to the media team, all of the keynote speakers’ talks are recorded and made available for download on Parkside’s Web site.

Being Looked After

Jack McCullough, an elder from a church in Newry, County Down in Northern Ireland, notes, “The quality of the teaching and the ministry that’s given out and they way that you’re looked after, it’s really second to none.” Pastor Harper agrees, saying "[t]hat’s a huge part of the conference for me. I’m not in charge. I don’t have to think about, ‘Where’s the coffee? Do I have to get the coffee? Or, what are we going to do now?’” Just as Pastor Gray gets ready to go, he shares, “And you all think of everything. A luggage storage area? Who thought of that?! It’s perfect. I filled out the survey so I can get the discount on next year’s conference. I’ll be back.”

April 24-26, 2009

The annual Parkside JourneyMen men’s retreat was hosted for the third year at the Atwood Lake Resort in rural Carroll County south of Canton. Located in the beautiful rolling Ohio hills and only one and a half hours from Cleveland, the resort once again proved to be the perfect place for our men to connect with solid Biblical teaching, build relationships, rest and relax. Situated on the top of a high hill overlooking scenic Atwood Lake, the resort offers many amenities, including an 18 hole golf course, a 9 hole lighted par 3 course, a driving range, tennis courts, hiking trails, fishing, boating, spa, swimming pools, exercise equipment, and much more. It was the perfect place for men to engage.

A year in planning, the event started Friday afternoon with registration and a hearty dinner buffet sure to satisfy any hungry man. Some men showed up early to fit in a round of golf before the event actually started, as evidenced by their red faces from the bright sunshine and uncharacteristic 85 degree weather! Our first session started promptly at 8PM, with worship music provided by our talented praise team, introductions and orientation material, then onto our main session presented by teacher Paul Sartarelli, senior pastor of The Chapel in Akron, and voice of the “Word on the Street” radio program heard locally on Moody radio. With the event theme being “A Man’s Virtue”, and our text for the night being Ephesians 4:25-5:4, we then dove into investigating honesty, anger control, self respect, affirmation, forgiveness, and purity. This set the tone for the weekend.

Saturday morning started with morning prayers, then a hearty breakfast buffet, complete with omelet station! Saturday morning’s teaching was in two sessions and directed our focus on forgiveness, with Mathew 18: 21-35 as our text. Pastor Sartarelli taught with passion, vision, and insight. The men were challenged in their facilitator led table discussion time as they sought to better understand the teaching and find personal application points from it. Forgiveness was exposed as the essence of our walk with Christ; a necessary walk as we forgive since we were forgiven (Col 3:12-13), and an obedient walk as we were commanded to forgive by Jesus (Luke 17:3-5).

Prior to lunch a spirited Q&A session hosted by Pastor Mickey Aquilino challenged Paul with questions from the attendees. Saturday afternoon was free time as men joined together in one of the many activities the resort had to offer, or just find a quiet nook for reading and “marinating” in God’s word. This is a time for men to build relationships and for sharing. Besides the aforementioned activities, some men also brought their own bicycles and went cycling, a few showed up on motorcycles and tested the curvy back roads, and Mickey himself was seen in a convertible tooling around these same back roads sporting a big smile!

Saturday evening started in a formal dinner setting, concluding with a reflective time directed by Mickey where all in attendance looked “inside” to find their own growth areas, and jot them down in the conference booklet. We ended the night with some fun comedy on video and then a movie about a man’s character focusing on the life of retired Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy.

Sunday completed our stay with prayers, worship, and Mickey tying into the virtue theme with a teaching on love from 1 Tim 1:5. Our prayer was that we love God and our fellow brothers from pure hearts, with good conscience, and a sincere faith.

The time seemed to race by, but we left the event refreshed and with our “armor” on as changed men. The men’s ministry leadership team consisting of Mickey Aquilino, Mike Bowerman, Tom Polasky, Ken Ungar, and myself sincerely thank all who attended. The talented praise team of Mike Swanson, John Milner, Melvin Holt, Justin Rice, and Bryan Simpson brought song to our ears and from our voices. We look forward to being your hosts next year as we are challenged in God’s word by guest teacher Dr. Michael Easley, past president of Moody Bible Institute now teaching pastor at Fellowship Bible Church in Breezewood, Tennessee. Join your fellow JourneyMen at this exciting event as we seek to become more like our Teacher, approved workmen, and useful to the Master!

Ministry Profile: 25th Birthday for Kids of the Kingdom

May 13^th marks the 25^th birthday of the Kids of the Kingdom ministry. We recognize it as a birthday because Kids of the Kingdom was officially “born” at Parkside Church. The purpose, curriculum, concept, and staffing all emerged as an outgrowth of God’s faithful guidance through much prayer of strongly committed team members. God has answered and continues to answer prayer in amazing ways!

A visit to Kids of the Kingdom quickly reveals unique aspects of this ministry. Children age three through third grade gather in small multi-age groups for the opening. The theme for the evening is shared, the accompanying scripture is read, and songs are sung that support the evening’s theme.

Action and interaction mark the core of the evening. The children gather in age-level groups for a time of teaching, storytelling, and activity. Every aspect of these components further develops the theme. At closing time, the children and leaders reassemble in their multi-age groups where an application of the theme is then enacted before them in order to encourage the children to put the lesson into practice.

Third graders are given the privilege of ending the evening by leading the entire group in prayer. We pray for one of Parkside’s missionary families, Kep and Debbie James, as well as the children and ministries of nearby Scranton Road Bible Church. Our connection with the James family has spanned all 25 years. Our partnership with Scranton Road Bible Church opens up opportunities for food collection, a Christmas gift project for the children, an invitation for SRBC children to be our guests at Parkside’s Vacation Bible School, provision of school supplies in August, and much more!

The Kids of the Kingdom lesson plans have been self-published, making it possible to share the lessons with other churches. These lessons have been used in a wide variety of settings--locally, nationally, and internationally. Our 180+ lessons include a series on God’s attributes, God’s promises, what God wants His children to be and do, and parables of the kingdom. Our Easter lesson is a special yearly highlight and even allows alumni staff members to come back and help!

At Kids of the Kingdom, discipling children is our primary goal. We do, however, have the privilege of providing a training ground for the adult staff members to mentor young people and teens in how to serve and lead others. Much of our Kids of the Kingdom staff consists of entire families who serve together.

Please join us in praising the Lord! We thank Him for His abundant blessing and amazing faithfulness during the past 25 years, and ask His help as we seek to continue to glorify Him. We invite any children age 3-third grade to join us on Sunday evening at Kids of the Kingdom—we look forward to seeing you there!

New Ministry Launch: Men's Flag Football League

Parkside Church is starting a men’s (18 years old and older) flag football league that will play on Saturday mornings starting May 16. The league will run through mid-July and provides a chance for the men of Parkside to get to know one another better in addition to getting some exercise and providing friendly competition.

Friends, family members, co-workers, and others are encouraged to sign-up, and you’re able to request the people you invite be assigned to your team. The games will be played at River Road Park in Chagrin Falls between 8am and noon, every Saturday. Greg was part of a similar flag football league at the church he came from in Houston. “While playing flag football is no doubt a lot of fun, I view this league first and foremost as a ministry opportunity” said Greg. “This will be a great way for the men of Parkside to grow closer together. Additionally, by inviting friends, family, co-workers and others to participate, we have a great opportunity to introduce people to the things of Christ by connecting them with believers in a non-intimidating environment. I pray the Lord will use this as a tool to bring non-believers to Christ and new faces to Parkside.”

Greg, his wife Jennifer and kids (Elizabeth 9, Heather 7, and Carson 2) moved to the Cleveland area in June of 2007, from Houston, TX, and live in Auburn Twp. They have been attending Parkside since that time and are currently involved in the Men’s and Women’s weekly Bible studies, and the pre-marital mentorship ministry. Greg, is the global director of press and analyst relations for Microsoft’s IT Services and Support organization.

Cancer. It's a diagnosis that no one wants to hear. For many people, this is the most devastating thing that they can imagine. Janet Vitt-Sommers, however, says that cancer was a blessing for her.

This counter-intuitive statement makes you stop and wonder how someone can come through such a terrible experience and be thankful for it. To find out, we sent Julie Hahn to talk with Janet and her friend Mary McHugh to hear how cancer has affected their lives. In the course of the conversation, we learned more about the Cancer Support Ministry at Parkside and how this group has helped Janet, Mary, and many others through their struggles with this disease.

If you're struggling with cancer, or have a family member, a friend, or a co-worker who has been affected, take a minute to read about this ministry and see how you might be involved.

Book Review: Heaven, by Randy Alcorn
Reviewed by Pastor Ron Klein

Most of us have questions about heaven. In fact, bookstores abound with accounts of near-death and after-death experiences, complete with angelic “guided tours”. A few of these books may have reliable components, but many are misleading and unbiblical.

Christians who believe God’s Word are perhaps partly to blame for this. We have sometimes failed to adequately explore, explain, and emphasize the main and plain biblical teachings about heaven. No wonder we have a world of unbiblical thinking filling the vacuum. There is a void in the human heart crying out for answers about the afterlife, and the relative silence from Christians about what Scripture says about heaven is particularly striking!

Perhaps our seminaries, churches, and families could and should have done a better job. The ultimate destination of God’s redeemed who will live forever with Christ in the Lord’s new heaven and earth provides a vision, encouragement, and hope that is fascinating, thrilling, and life-changing.

Book Highlights
Randy Alcorn has spent many years in biblical research on this subject. In his recent book titled Heaven, he attempts to put into this volume everything he has gleaned, in part reacting to false and misleading views of heaven, especially a certain group. From Randy’s perspective, the contemporary American viewpoint of heaven is a “philosophy which has blended elements of Platonism with Christianity and in so doing has poisoned Christianity and blunted its differences from Eastern religions” (pp. 459). A large portion of the book argues and focuses on this point. He was very clear on this but the heavy repetition of this reasoning made me grow a little weary.

The general thesis of the book is sound and encouraging! Examples and quotes abound to press home his point. Alcorn’s imagination aids us in thought and appreciation of the glories of eternal life that awaits God’s redeemed. This book is good motivation to “finish well”!

Cautions about the Book
Time and space do not allow me to deal at length with problematic portions of the book, but I will highlight a few areas to apply discernment to. First, a few of the authors quoted are controversial in evangelical circles. Next, Alcorn applies descriptions of the Millennium to the eternal state. This may be confusing to some Christians. Thirdly, Randy’s argument for a “refined new earth” as opposed to the destruction of our fallen earth and a newly created “new earth” might not be very convincing to some Christians. Alcorn admits, “In much of what I’ve just said, I’m speculating, of course, but because the Bible gives a clear picture of resurrection and of earthly civilization in the eternal state, I’m walking through a door of imagination that Scripture itself opens” (pp. 434-435). Alcorn imagines animals having non-human souls so that our pets most likely will be in heaven. We will write books, play sports, perform dramas, be injured and heal quickly, and physical things on earth may survive into eternity. If I understood Alcorn correctly, he holds to an “intermediate heaven” and a “permanent relocation of heaven to the New Earth”. I feel more comfortable with Wayne Grudem’s view, “…There will also be a new heaven and earth…There will also be a new kind of unification of heaven and earth…There will be a joining of heaven and earth in this new creation.” In a context of prophetic statements, the apostle Paul says, “Test everything. Hold on to the good”. (I Thes. 5:21) God says in Acts 17:11 that the Bereans, “…examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true”.

Many of the almost 500 pages of Heaven at times uses phrases such as, “it seems like”, “it appears”, “maybe”, “it is possible” and the like. Read these portions with biblical and Spirit led discernment. Remember that all of us know in part and see through a glass darkly. Furthermore, here on earth in our fallen bodies with the world, the flesh, and the devil working against us, we all need to beware of being distracted, deceived, and discouraged about the main and plain things of God.

Summary
If you’ve commonly thought of heaven as a realm of disembodied spirits on clouds with eternal harp strumming, you’re in for a fantastically wonderful surprise! This book is about real people with real bodies enjoying a very close relationship with God and each other in a “global Garden of Eden”; exploring and enjoying these relationships in a new heaven and new earth as God intended it to be. After reading this book, when someone says, “We can’t begin to imagine what heaven will be like”, you will perhaps be better able to tell them, “I CAN”!

If we're honest, we've all probably had the experience where we think we've just figured out who all the pastors are and what ministries they oversee--and then it changes. Over the past nine months, there have been quite a few changes to the pastoral team, so we thought we'd take a few minutes to catch you up on everything that's new.

Looking for a Bible study? Mickey Aquilino has one for you. Mickey oversees the Men's, Women's, Pre-marital ministries, and Parenting ministries. And if that doesn't keep him busy enough, you might find him playing some jazz music on the piano.

Alistair Begg is the Senior Teaching Pastor at Parkside since 1983. On Sundays, you'll find him preaching at Parkside. He sets the strategic vision for Parkside Church. His teaching is also featured on the radio program Truth For Life.

Jeff helps to implement the day-to-day details of Alistair's vision for the church, helps provide direction for new & existing ministries, and assists with the financial management of the budget. His Sunday morning Life Group is a popular place to be at 9:45 on Sundays.

Adam Romans is the other member of the Green Team. Adam

The Church Offices will be closed on Friday, April 10.

Good Friday Service
We will have a Good Friday worship service followed by the celebration of the Lord’s Supper on April 10 at 7pm. There is nursery care provided for children birth-35 months of age for the Good Friday service.

Easter Services
Our Easter Sunday services will be at 8:30am, 9:45am and 11:15am. There will be no Adult morning classes, Sunday School for 1st-5th grades or evening service on Easter. Pioneer Clubs Mother-Daughter Sleepover
All girls in grades 1-5 are invited to bring their moms for a night of games, goodies, and giggles! Join us on April 3-4 from 6pm to 10am at the Warehouse (31200 Solon Road). Parkside at Prayer
We will gather as a church family to pray for our church, our community and our world next Sunday evening, April 5, at 5:45pm in the Fellowship Hall.

Good Friday & Easter Service Schedule
We will have a Good Friday worship service followed by the celebration of the Lord’s Supper on April 10 at 7pm. Our Easter Sunday services will be at 8:30am, 9:45am and 11:15am. There will be no Sunday classes or evening service on Easter. Invitations are available at all information centers.

Wycliffe Banquet
The Wycliffe Bible Translators will hold their annual banquet on April 14 at 7pm at the Holiday Inn in Independence. If you are interested in attending, please make your reservations by calling Muriel Bean at 440.247.3829 by April 7.
Parents’ Night Out
April 17 is Parents Night Out, an evening of respite care to families of children with special needs. To RSCP, contact Char Croyts if you are already on file or call Renee at 440.708.2113 for an info pack and application if you are new to PNO. Reservations are required by April 10 to assure adequate staffing.

Moody Women's Conference
The Moody Women's Conference is fast approaching, and tickets sell quickly! Parkside will again host the Moody Women’s Conference at the church on April 18 from 9am-3:30pm. Lunch will be provided. Men’s Spring Retreat
There are still a few openings for the Men’s Spring Retreat, April 24-26, at Atwood Lakes Resort. Sign up today at the men’s table or online to secure your room at the resort. Paul Sartarelli will be our conference host for the weekend. All meals, materials and room are included in the cost.

Managing Your Money
We will host a seminar to give biblical principals on money management, help you avoid or survive financial crisis, and think long-term with investing. The seminar will take place May 2 from 8:30am-Noon. Registration brochures are available in all information centers.

Upward Bound Vacation Bible School
Sign up to serve as this year’s VBS Expedition June 15-19! Adult and youth helpers (6th grade-high school) are needed. Stop by the table by Fellowship Hall for more info. Registration for children attending VBS begins at end of April.

Save the Date: July 7-11, Ambassadors in Sport Soccer Camp
Bethlehem Baptist Church in Orange Village. This is a fun-filled sports week for children ages 6-16, where they not only learn and improve their soccer skills but are also challenged to grow in their faith in Christ. Construction Update:
February 9-16 - The latest information we have received is that Pettibone will close completely for one week starting Monday, February 9. This means that it could be closed on Sunday, February 16. It was delayed from the earlier closure by the need to relocate a gas line. The alternate approach to the church from the west is via the Home Depot shopping center roadway from Aurora Road.

August 15, 2009 - Projected completion of Phase One and reopening of Pettibone to two-way traffic from Liberty to the County Line.
