This can include anything from grooming services to pet sitting and dog walking. Starting a business of this kind requires careful planning and research, but it can be a rewarding journey when done right. Here are some tips from Parma Animal Shelter on how to get started. Choices of Pet-Related Business The first step is deciding what type of pet-related business you want to open. This could include pet sitting, grooming services, or selling products related to animals such as food and toys. Consider what options are available in your area and which ones you would most enjoy doing. Developing a Business Plan Once you’ve decided on the type of pet-related business you would like to open, it’s time to develop a business plan. This should include key information such as the purpose of the business, financial projections for the first year, and marketing strategies. A good business plan will help guide your decisions in the future and keep you on track with your goals. Converting Your Business to an LLC Once you have developed your business plan […]

Spaying and neutering are important health decisions for pet owners. Not only do they help reduce the homeless pet population, but spay/neuter surgeries also provide long-term benefits to pets’ overall health and behavior. Spaying or neutering can prevent certain types of cancers in cats and dogs, as well as reducing their risk of developing other illnesses or infections. It can also reduce your pet’s urge to roam, mark territory with urine, display aggression towards other animals or people, and even become destructive when left alone. By investing in a spay/neuter surgery today you could be providing your beloved companion with a longer life filled with fewer issues down the road. Benefits of Spaying/Neutering Spaying or neutering is a critical part of pet ownership, as it can have many benefits for both the pet and the pet owner. Here are some of the benefits of such a procedure: Reducing pet overpopulation Unaltered pets produce an overwhelming number of offspring that often end up in shelters or on the street. Spaying/neutering helps reduce this problem and keeps pets from being euthanized due to overcrowding in shelters. Reducing aggressive behaviors Altering pets (especially males) drastically reduces their tendency to fight with others over […]

Pet owners know the fun, spontaneity, and joy animals bring to our lives: an excited pup spinning in circles whenever he hears your car, a cat whose happy purr vibrates when you pet her, guinea pigs who squeak hello – the list goes on. According to the World Animal Foundation, about 86.9 million U.S. households have at least one pet. And in one survey, 74 percent of the respondents credited pet ownership with improving their mental health. So let’s dig into the science behind pet therapy, with a little help from Parma Animal Shelter. Proof that pets positively impact our lives and health Science suggests that pets provide good therapy for all people, especially those diagnosed with mental health disorders like anxiety or depression. Other studies concur that pets provide security and routine and emotional support, facilitate the growth of relationships, friendships, and social networks, and even promote longevity. The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) recently committed over $3 million to support research projects to explore benefits of human-animal interaction in mental health and wellness; child health and development; and healthy aging. Pet therapy for mental health You don’t necessarily need to have a specific therapy-trained animal to benefit […]

Parma Animal Shelter is pleased to announce we recently became aware of another way to help clients who want to find homes for their pets. We will make the link to this program which is called Get Your Pet on our website next to our link to Find Your Pet a New Home which uses Adopt-A-Pet to list available pets. There are a few differences in the programs. Below is the promotion we received from Petfinder. Unable to accept an owned pet? We’ve partnered with rehoming service, GetYourPet.com exclusively on the Petfinder app. You can use it as a resource to connect adopters with individuals looking to find a home for their pet. Just direct current pet caretakers to getyourpet‌.‌com where they can list their pet in a few easy steps. Get Your Pet is an online community that connects people who need to find a new home for their pet with people who want to adopt a pet like theirs. The Problem: Animal shelters and pet rescues do wonderful work, but the current, shelter-based system for pet adoption is in crisis, and it needs our help. Get Your Pet is a simple, smart and humane way to keep pets […]
