Windows - How Many Have You Seen?

I decided to start this page after browsing some of my photos and seeing that I had a few shots of windows of various shapes and sizes. We cannot live without them, but nowadays they are often taken for granted, whereas in the past they were almost pieces of artwork, dressing the outside of buildings. I have always looked at this photo and thought do I like it or not? The problem is from a photo point of view it is far from perfect. Recently, however, I have been looking at some of the entries to Paint It Saturday on G+, which has made me look at this photo in a different way and the positive responses I have had have enabled this photo to finally make the grade. I hope you like it too.

Light House on Pigeon Island, Kuşadası, Turkey

This light house, is located on the far side of Pigeon Island (Güvercin Ada). During the Ottoman era, the island was used for military purposes.

Fire and flames are just so mezmerising and none more so than the ones in our fireplace at home. This is the first time I have tried to freeze the action, I am reasonably happy with these but will try again.

Little Owl

This little fellow is a resident on our friends estate. There are at least a couple of them that live in the unused chimneys. Today was a miserable, wet day and I took these photos when the owl was sheltering from the rain on the window sill. They were not easy shots as I had to adjust the focus for the window pane and mosquito screen that was between us, but I was very happy with the outcome.

Bright, Stormy, January Day At The Beach

Yesterday at the beach there were several contrasts. Essentially it was a lovely sunny day with hardly any breeze, but the sea was quite rough and because the tide level was low the waves were breaking hard onto the shore. As you looked towards the mountain range which hugs part of the coastline, there you could see the stormy clouds, having a constant battle with the sun.

Most people don't give these pigeon's a second glance, but if you take the time to watch them, they are real characters and have some lovely metallic colourings around their necks.

Small Black Spinney Caterpillar

This little fellow was in our garden in Turkey. I have not been able to identify him yet, any suggestions, please feel free. He was only about 1 inch/2.5 cm long, completely black in colour with reddish brown eyes and long spines all the way around its body.

Street In Reflection

This is quite a subtle reflection but I like the effect. The winter sun was low enough to create a shadow behind the buildings which created a silhouetted reflection in the window of the cafe.

Grey Wagtail

I spent an hour one afternoon watching this lovely little Wagtail flitting backwards and forwards along the waters edge pecking at bugs and pieces of bread. The little bird would stay for a while and then would fly off only to return a little while later. The Grey Wagtail is one of the smaller members of the Wagtail family and is distinguished from the Yellow Wagtail as it only has yellow around its throat )although breeding males develop a black throat) and vent (term used for the posterior opening in birds, reptiles and amphibians.

Contrasting Cruise Ships Dropping in on Kuşadası

Never having seen many cruise ships until I moved to Turkey, I am still amazed at the range of sizes, and styles of the visiting vessels. The day I took this photo was no exception, ok, at the time there were only 3 ships moored up, unlike some days when there can be 7 or 8, however these 3 represented some of the diverse range of vessels.

The middle vessel is the Cunard Queen Victoria - built in Italy - cost approximately 270 million pounds sterling - port of registry Bermuda - maiden voyage 11th December 2007 - gross tonnage 90,000 tones - length 964.5 feet - 16 decks - 2014 passengers - 900 crew.

The vessel in the foreground is the Wind Star - built in France - cost 32 million dollars - port of registry The Bahamas - maiden voyage 1986 - gross tonnage 5,703 tonnes - length 440 feet - 4 decks - 148 passengers - 90 crew.

The Queen Victoria and the Celebrity Equinox make an impressive site dwarfing the cruise terminal building and the pilot boats.

October Sunsets

I have to share some more of our beautiful sunsets. I am very luck to be able to have this view from the roof terrace of our house in Turkey. From late September to late February the sun sets over the top of the Greek island of Samos.

Davutlar Marina

Along the beach where I live is the Marina at Davutlar, mainly used by the local fishermen to store their boats for fishing. On a weekend you will see them all chugging out to spend the day on one of the nations favourite pastimes.

Black Turkey

I thought I had had too much sun down at the beach the other day, but no, there were a couple of Turkeys strutting there stuff. These are a member of the Black Turkey or often referred to as Spanish Black or Norfolk Black. I love how the red and blue of their heads contrasts with the black of their body feathers.

St Marys Church, Chippenham, Cambridgeshire, England

St Mary's Church, Chippenham, Cambridgeshire. The building dates back to the 13th Century. At one time it included a chapel used by the Knights Hospitallers, an order of Knights founded in the 12th Century to help sick pilgrims journeying to the Holy Land.

Much of the church was rebuilt after a fire in 1446.

I can always remember as a child hearing people say that you should never take photos into the sun. But on occasions with the right settings the effects can really work. This photo was taken in colour but because of the lighting looks black and white.
