Visiting Arts in partnership with The Delfina Foundation is pleased to announce Artist to Artist International 2011.

The programme provides an opportunity to bring together artists to
initiate dialogues across international borders, enabling pairs of
artists to enter into new working relationships on an open-ended and informal basis.
Professional, practising UK based artists can apply to invite an artist of their choice, to visit UK for two weeks for the exchange of ideas and experiences.

The scheme has a geographic focus for UK based artists to invite artists from the following countries and territories – Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Morocco, Oman, Palestine Territories, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

The selected overseas artist will spend 2 weeks in the UK.

The emphasis is on the development and research process rather than production, free from any obligation to produce a prescribed outcome.

All selected participants will need to be available from the 30th March until the 17st April 2011 (fixed).

Help IRONBBRATZ get BIG

IRONBBRATZ are a not-for-profit arts organisation based in Glasgow, which supports emerging arts and creative practitioners by providing studios, exhibition opportunities and practical support. Ironbbratz are a Shell LiveWIRE Grand Idea Award 2010 Winner.

They are currently expanding their studios to provide space for 25 more creative practitioners. This will mean that they’ll be host to around 40 early-career or emergent artists, designers, writers, architects, performers, doers, and makers. Allowing them to make a
buzzing creative community in the heart of the city.

Ironbbratz is a non-for-profit organisation and has been self funded since they started as an artist group in February of 2008. They could do with some help in funding the starting up cost of
their new spaces. This would be to pay for building materials. The total cost for this project is just under £1500.

For every bit you donate to them, you’ll be rewarded with exclusive arty goodies and their eternal gratitude. By donating the small sum of £15 you can receive a archival giclée print notecard featuring the work of one of IRONBBRATZ Studios’s tenants. There are loads of other rewards, which you can see at
COAL PRIZE ART&ENVIRONMENT 2011: Apply Now

Description

The COAL Art & Environment prize was launched in 2010 by the French association COAL, the coalition for art and sustainable development, to reward a project about the environment by a contemporary artist.

The winner is chosen by a jury of personalities from the worlds of contemporary art, research, ecology and sustainable development, out of 10 finalists selected from an international call for entries.

The COAL Prize 2011, worth 10 000 euros, comes under the auspices of the french Ministry of Culture and Communication, the National Centre of Fine Arts (CNAP), and enjoys the support of PwC and a private benefactor.

Note: To mark 2011 the International Year of the Forest and promote entries on this theme in 2011, a second prize will reward entries that focus on forest issues.

Schedule

The application period closes on 30 April 2011.
The prize will be awarded in May 2011.

Selection of entries

The entry selection criteria take stock of the artistic value, relevance (understanding the issues), originality (ability to introduce novel approaches, themes, and points of view), pedagogy (ability to get a message across, to raise awareness), a social and participative approach (engagement, testimony, efficiency, societal dynamics), eco-design, feasibility.
An artist’s specialisation on the environment is not a selection criterion. The aim of the prize is to encourage artists to focus on environmental issues.

Application package

It should comprise the following documents, assembled in a single PDF file:
- A Curriculum Vitae and artistic dossier;
- A summary and illustrated description of the entry, detailing its artistic aspects and its relevance to the environment;
- A note on the technical aspects of the entry, notably in terms of the construction and means of production;
-An estimated budget.

Submission

Deadline 30 April 2011

All proposals should be submitted to the COAL FTP server at before 30 April 2011.

Contact

Lord Smith supports Sustrans

Lord Chris Smith, former Culture Secretary and current Chairman of the Environment Agency has become a patron of Sustrans.

A keen walker, Lord Smith will support *Sustrans*’ Arts and the Travelling Landscape programme.

Sustrans is one of the largest commissioners of public art, with more than 2,000 original artworks along the 12,600 miles of National Cycle Network UK-wide.

Lord Smith said:

‘Ever since the Millennium year, Sustrans’ work in establishing the National Cycle Network has been outstanding. Now they’re making it even better, extending the routes, and joining together with local communities up and down the country to create works of art that everyone can be proud of.

Art can provide colour, beauty, life and understanding. It can – and will – delight all who see it.’

Lord Smith was welcomed as patron by *Sustrans*’ Chief Executive Malcolm Shepherd and *Sustrans*’ Arts Director Katy Hallett.

’We’re delighted that the arts programme now has its own patron’ Katy said. ’It’s symbolic of how important artworks along the National Cycle Network are to people’s experience of, and engagement with, the outdoors. They allow people to pause, relax and contemplate their surroundings in a way they may not usually be encouraged to do.

‘Our research has shown that ’pleasant surroundings’ are the number one reason why people choose to use the Network, so the artworks along the way are a vital part of encouraging people to explore on foot or bike.’

More than 300 artists have been involved with Sustrans over the last thirty years to create the artworks on the Network. The art often directly reflects the history, industry and landscape of an area.

But it’s not just artists that are involved in the creative process. Across the UK, Sustrans is in the process of creating a series of steel benches depicting portraits of local heroes that have been nominated and voted for by the public. The heroes range from celebrated athletes, politicians, comedians and actors, to community workers and volunteers.

New initiative launched by US Artists' Project Website

United States Artists have launched a new initiative to help artists reach audiences to support their work.

Suzanne Lacy was selected to present a project on the first round of the site and is proposing The Performing Archive with Leslie Labowitz and Kate Johnson.

Lacy says:

We are seeking $8,800 to create a single channel video focusing on contemporary readings of feminist art history by young women artists as they encounter an extensive archive of feminist performance art. We have raised 26% so far and have just over a week to fund the project.

What is the legacy of the first wave of feminist art and how do younger women position themselves with respect to this important movement? Coincident with the 2007 exhibition Wack! Art and the Feminist Revolution at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, Leslie Labowitz and I developed an installation that featured 80 boxes of archival material from 1970-1985 and 13 video interviews of current young women artists searching through, and offering interpretations of, these archives. The project was a success, with reviewers from national magazines commenting on renewed interest in 70s performance and women’s art, and intimate interviews with young women—born during that time—as they sort through received histories to formulate their own perspectives.

This important exchange, exhibited formerly with rare archival materials in a multichannel format, will be more assessable as a single channel video. Money raised will allow us to re-edit the original tapes.

In a moment where both feminist and performance art from 1970-1980 is under close historical scrutiny, it is important to promote cross-generational conversation with young artists who speculate on the meanings of early feminist art practice from the vantage points of their own lives, social context, and how that history has been presented to them.

To know more about the project, or to support the artists in reaching their $8,800 goal, please click here.

Arroyo Arts Collective and 18th Street Arts Center are pleased to present Yarn Bombing on the 18th, a fiber art experience in and around the 18th Street Arts Center on June 18th, 2011.

Artists from the west and east side of Los Angeles and beyond will come together to transform the space by dressing everyday items in yarn and other fiber material. Enjoy a stroll and marvel in the handmade work attached to trees, posts, benches and other fixtures throughout the complex. The act of Yarn Bombing combines the art of street installation with needlework to create colorful, unexpected, and humorous messages in public spaces.

This is a two-fold exhibition, and includes a wall display inside in an artists studio at the 18th Street Art Center as well. Works may range from whimsical to functional or political; and all push the knit/crochet envelope. Recycled knit and fiber materials is encouraged.

The entry process includes attending the orientation/ site tour on Saturday, February 19th 2-5pm at 1653 18th Street, Santa Monica, CA, 90404.
Each participant will claim their spot and propose a site specific project during the orientation. Space is available on a first come first serve basis. Attendees are highly encouraged to stay for the 18th Street Arts Center Art Night 6-10pm on February 19th to experience the complex during this special event as our own event will unfold during the next artnight on June 18th.

An ongoing stitch and bitch group will meet at the same location every 3rd Saturday of each month to work together and also to accept new applications

After the initial meeting, these monthly get-togethers are optional. Due to the site specific nature of the event, visiting the space in person at least once is essential, but exceptions can be made for highly enthusiastic parties (international applicants?) who are unable to come but would like to work out a way to participate.

They would like to know who is coming, so please contact them at yarnbombing18@gmail.com to confirm your attendance to the orientation.
