Save the new Contemporary Art Centre in Union Terrace Gardens

The development of an iconic new arts centre in Aberdeen’s Union Terrace Gardens looks unlikely to survive new plans to ‘deck over’ Union Terrace Gardens.

The arts centre has been described as one of Scotland’s most exciting cultural projects, expected to deliver a host of economic, social and tourism benefits to Aberdeen’s City Centre.

As well as annually attracting around 200,00 visitors and bringing around £4m per year into the local economy, it is also to have a strong educational focus – engaging thousands of young people with the arts and creative industries.

Examples of cultural facilities regenerating cities around the world support the need of a new contemporary art centre in Aberdeen.

This innovative project which is set to be a fantastic facility for both tourists and the local community and provide Union Terrace Gardens with better access, a safer environment and a new focal point with out being too detrimental to it’s thriving ecosystem and landscape which has been evolving since the 17th century, has now been blown out of the water, and looks unlikely to survive in the face of new plans to ‘deck over’ Union Terrace Gardens by Sir Ian Wood.

If you believe strongly in preserving a beautiful historic landscape and helping create a brighter, better future for Aberdeen then please, sign this petition.

Start an American tradition that you’d like to be preserved
Assign yourself

You will have a week to complete your assignment, for which you will be paid $23.50, the weekly wage for an artist in the Federal One Project (the arts division of the WPA).

TWO will hold a Payday Party each Friday evening in July at the office. Employees will collect their wages and the public will be invited to view the week’s works and learn about the project.

Real Public: Four Works of Public Art in Hartford, Connecticut

Real Art Ways has commissioned 4 site specific artworks for the Parkville and Frog Hollow neighborhoods of Hartford, Connecticut, USA.

About the Projects
Photographer Margarida Correia has been working with members of Hartford’s Portuguese community. A Parkville billboard displays the Praia da Nazaré, Portugal’s famous beach. Street lamp banners on Park Street display album covers of famous Fado singers. Stores along Parkville play music from the albums.

Correia is from Portugual. Her work explores the relationships that people from her generation develop with things they collect and care for.

Satch Hoyt created a labyrinth in Frog Hollow’s Pope Park. The labyrinth, constructed from clotheslines, addresses the migratory voyage of the residents who reside in the neighborhood. The public is invited to traverse the labyrinth’s path.

Hoyt was born in London and is currently living and working in Berlin, Germany. The sculptural trope in Hoyt’s work is the acts on the ground, so to speak, of black experience.

Sofia Maldonado’s mural, on the Pelican Tattoo building in Frog Hollow, blends elements of female aesthetics and street cultures. Maldonado worked with two interns to create the project, including a neighborhood teenager from Mi Casa, a Parkville youth organization.

Maldonado was born in Puerto Rico. Now working and living in Brooklyn, her artwork is a blend of fashion trends, the Latina female aesthetic and various street culture elements.

Matthew Rodriguez has created faces on 77 trees in Pope Park. The playful characters, painted onto the trees, look out onto Hamilton Avenue. The trees were painted with the help of volunteers from the neighborhood.

Rodriguez’s childlike creations encapsulate urban anxieties while ridiculing them by standing out in stark contrast to their decaying surroundings. He lives and works in Austin, TX

Kristina Newman-Scott, Real Art Ways’ Director of Visual Arts, explains the artist selection process: “The artists we selected for this program have a particular interest in working in the public realm, and their works simultaneously connect people to the art and to each other. Therein lies the magic.”

Self-guided tours, narrated by the artists, are available for free by cell phone: 860-760-9979. Free project maps are available at Real Art Ways, or online: realartways.org/visualarts.htm.

A special double issue of the publication has been devoted to the question: is the public sphere still a vital concept for art and politics in the 21st century?

No. 37: PUBLIC?
Edited by Aleksandra Kaminska, Janine Marchessault, Jason Rovito.

Alain Badiou, Sean Cubitt, Vilém Flusser, Victor Fowler, Annette Frick, Bettina Funcke, David Holloway, Scott McQuire, Gabriel Menotti, Martin Morris, Wajdi Mouawad, Nikos Papastergiadis, Barbara Rauch, Peter Sloterdijk and more.

No. 38: PROJECTS FOR A SMALL WORLD
Edited by Gregory Burke and Christine Davis.

Fiona Banner, Matthew Buckingham, Maria Eichhorn, Geoffrey Farmer, Christina Forrer, Henrik Hakansson, David Hatcher, Kristan Horton, Oliver Husain, Shelagh Keeley, Glenn Ligon, Kelly Mark, Lynne Marsh, John Massey, Adrian Paci, Seher Shah, Anne-Mie van Kerckhoven, Mark von Schlegell, Et al.

PUBLIC ACCESS
In 1988, the journal Public: Art/Culture/Ideas was launched by the Public Access Collective, a Toronto-based group comprising artists, writers, and curators equally engaged in theory and politics. In conjunction with the publication of the journal, the collective began to curate exhibitions that utilized urban screens as a means to consider the potential of public art for both engendering collective experiences and for inciting debates and raising awareness in a city that was quickly privatizing every inch of shared space. Together, Public and its founding collective aimed to bring together theoretical and critical work with artistic practice and collaborations.

Over the past twenty years, Public has continued its mandate to investigate ideas, theories, and practices of art and culture within the urban context—publishing, in the process, some of the most influential voices in critical theory, including Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Arthur Kroker, Avital Ronell, Giorgio Agamben, Jane Jacobs, Rosalyn Deutsche, Sean Cubitt, Peter Sloterdijk and many others. The landscape underlying the problematic of the public has changed dramatically since the journal was first imagined: spatial topographies have been transformed through new architectures of information and media; temporary autonomous zones have been employed as liminal performative spaces; counter-publics and scenes have been created through events both spontaneous and community-based; and boundaries (national, urban, and personal) have been rendered at once more porous and more policed. These complexities inspire the journal’s ongoing commitment to exploring contemporar y politics and aesthetics through philosophy and critical theory.

ONGOING CRITICAL CURATORIAL RESEARCH
The Public Access Collective continues to carry out studies of public, private and civic spaces. Over the next two years, a series of site-specific exhibitions will situate investigations into urban and suburban DWELLING, fostering cross-sector collaborations, community dialogue and new approaches to old problems. With The Leona Drive Project, 8-18th October 2009 ( http://www.leonadrive.ca ), fifteen artists will transform six bungalows slated for demolition/development on the outskirts of Toronto, Canada.

THE PUBLIC ACCESS COLLECTIVE
