‘TRIAL OF THE SPIDER ‘

Transmission Gallery is pleased to present a screening of the film by Anja Kirschner and David Panos, followed by a discussion between the artists and Rebecca Gordon-Nesbitt
Transmission – Floor 4, 48 King Street
Saturday 25th October 7pm
Doors open 6.30pm
Trail of the Spider transposes Western genre motifs and the suppressed racial history of the American West (where one in three cowboys were black or Mexican) onto the transforming landscape of East London. Questioning and re-imagining the Western’s portrayal of the “Vanishing Frontier” , the film extends the metaphor to the material and psychological conditions of the present.

Recreating the epic panoramas of the Western in Hackney Marshes, the Thames Gateway and Essex, on landfills, wastelands and gravel pits linked to the construction of the 2012 Olympic Park, the film allegorizes the shifting and shrinking space for collective social and political agency, self-determination and dissent in an urban reality increasingly dominated by volatile financial speculations, private interests and the spectre of the Olympic gold rush.

Working with a large cast of actors and non-actors (many of whom are themselves residents of East London), the film explores the compromises and ordeals of a population facing this new order. Many of the film’s verbal exchanges are rooted both in historic sources and the collective experiences of the players and filmmakers (linked in many cases through political activism and friendship), opening up a discursive field in which past and present are held in an uneasy suspension.

Cities as Battlespace: the new military urbanism

Professor Stephen Graham, University of Durham, will be speaking on the role of cities within the war on terror.
Wednesday 29th October 3pm
Room 5.10.
Department of Geography and Sociology
University of Strathclyde
Graham Hills Building, 50 Richmond Street
Glasgow G1 1XN
Part of the seminar series at the Department of Geography and Sociology, University of Strathclyde.

1. EXHIBITION/// IT’S IN THE AIR – Felix Hess
10 – 12 October
IT’S IN THE AIR is part of KYTN, DCA and Arika’s festival of sound and image, exploring as many different ways in which artists, filmmakers and musicians can investigate the border between what you hear and what you see. Felix Hess is a unique crosser of the boundaries between
science and art. The trained physicist wrote his doctorial thesis on the aerodynamics of the boomerang. The calls of frogs in Australia, Mexico, and Japan inspired him to use electronic components to construct devices simulating the communication behaviour of living systems. His
research on sound finally led to interest in hidden phenomena like infrasound. The result: wondrously poetic installations that allow us to
experience hidden energy fields with our senses. IT’S IN THE AIR, created out of small flags of Japanese rice paper, makes visual the eddies, movements and air pressure fluctuations that happen on a micro
level in a given space and alludes to sound as a relational, physical fluctuation. www.arika.org.uk

His intricate flicker works are an intense and mesmerising
experience. Kjell (pronounced Shell) is one of the leading contemporary artists in Norway, producing impressive large scale ambitious works that transform the gallery to a theatre of flickering light.

Trained as a painter, Paul Sharits (1943-1993) moved into presenting his work in film as an attempt to translate ideas of music into a visual
medium. He was one of the primary innovators of Structural and avant-garde cinema which culminated in his colour ‘flicker’ films and larger multi-projection installations. He radically pioneered the shift of film works into gallery and museum spaces. For this exhibition we will be presenting Sharits’ work Epileptic Seizure Comparison (1976).

Invisible Oil: Peacock Visual Arts, Aberdeen

A new commission by Austrian artist Ernst Logar investigates the invisible, yet vital locations of the oil industry in Aberdeen.

Exhibition Runs: 04 October – 15 November, 2008.
Opening Friday 3 October, 6 – 8pm.
Artist’s Talk Saturday 4 October, 2pm. All welcome. Admission Free.

Austrian artist Ernst Logar engages with oil and its significance as the basis of our modern civilization. The exhibition interweaves the material of crude oil and the diverse economic, political and social levels of the North Sea oil industry in a range of artistic media.

Aberdeen, the UK base for North Sea oil and gas extraction, is a centre of the global energy sector, yet the activities of the industry are largely hidden from public view. “Invisible Oil” aims to make key locations of the oil industry in Scotland publicly visible. In new photographs, sculptures, drawings and prints, Ernst Logar maps some of the key political, economic, technological and social spaces and reveals their interconnections and relations.

This research will lead to exploration of these themes both online and through performance. For more information take a look at: www.alexhetherington.com

Ben Dembroski was nominated for project2891 (see www.dembroski.net ). Project2891 is system that encourages engagement from less technically experienced artists in the development of both hardware and software solutions for nodal device art installations. The simple user interface will provide control of connected hardware, as well as other nodes via the Internet. A series of free workshops will explain how to use the system and suggest how it might be modified for creative applications.

Public sculpture is currently enjoying an extraordinary resurgence of activity with a string of high-profile projects capturing the public imagination and garnering widespread media attention.

The FIRST@108 award, worth more than £10,000, will promote excellence, innovation and best practice in one of the fastest growing areas of the international art scene. The competition represents a unique opportunity for emerging artists to develop the specific skills and experience required to compete for important large-scale sculpture commissions at a time of unprecedented public, private and commercial interest.

FIRST@108 is open to sculptors of any age and nationality working in any style or media who have yet to achieve recognition as practitioners of public art. The award is designed to replicate the demanding procedures and detailed requirements encountered in most public art commissions and will help ambitious artists focus on an area of public art that is entering one of its most exciting phases in recent memory. To that end, the winning artist will be both challenged and supported throughout the production process.

In order to invite multiple interpretations and encourage innovation and creativity, ‘INTERACTION’ has been chosen as the theme of the inaugural award.

Sir Norman Rosenthal: "Banks fall over: Art triumphs."

The Guardian Newspaper is this morning reporting that the credit crunch seems to have passed the commercial art world by, as all 96 lots in the Sotheby’s auction of Damian Hirst’s ‘greatest hits’ sold yesterday for a total of around £70.5m.

Hirst’s personal curation of the auction has been much discussed, with his two representing galleries -Jay Jobling’s White Cube and Larry Gagosian in New York – standing back to (grudgingly, some claim) allow Hirst to sell his work here independently, without them taking a percentage.

Hirst’s practice has long focussed on the relationships between death, desire, and money, and last year his diamond skull sold to a consortium for £50m, making it the most expensive piece of contemporary art ever. Yesterday, even the catalogue for the sale was selling for £200.

Ruthin Craft Centre and Safle are inviting artists to apply for a 3-month residency to research and take forward their practice in any discipline informed by the applied arts. A focus on the application of the arts in the public realm will be encouraged. The objective of the residencies is to give the artists as much opportunity to practice their art as possible.

Application Deadline: 29th September 2008

It is imperative that the artist is able to work freely and confidently and there is a hope that having once established a working pattern and context that the artist will feel able to set aside time to interact with the staff, visitors, arts students and other professionals on an appropriate level and timescale.

Each residency studio is 45m with modern facilities etc. They are not equipped for a specific artform as it is envisaged that there will be a wide range of disciplines represented in the studios and specific equipment for the studios will be discussed with the artists prior to the start date.

It is expected that the artists will have the opportunity to contribute to the overall exhibition programme of the Centre or to convert their studio into an exhibition space at the end of the residency.

The new Ruthin Craft Centre, designed by architects Sergison Bates, is arguably the most important recent development in Applied Arts in the UK, in that it not only provides over 350 sq metres of exhibition space, but creates a stimulating working environment with a programme that is committed to exploring all aspects of the applied arts.

Budgets
Each 3 month residency carries an artist’s budget in the region of £7000 plus other print, publicity and exhibition costs.

Ruthin Craft Centre will assist in finding accommodation in Ruthin town as there is no accommodation on site.

Timescale
Two opportunities are offered for residencies of 3 month duration commencing in November 2008 and January 2009.

Selection process
There are no restrictions as to where the artists currently work, be it local or international. Submissions can be from a wide range of disciplines from within the applied arts, and related activity such as time-based media or work for the built environment etc.

The artists will be selected from an open submission by a steering group drawn from Ruthin Craft Centre, Safle and other partners.

Please send:
1) A CD or DVD of images or other visuals, saved as a powerpoint presentation or similar – a maximum of 10 images or 10 minutes of video.
2) A letter of no more than two pages outlining why a residency in Ruthin will be beneficial to your practice, how you will ensure that any outcomes are recorded or presented and how your work relates to the focus outlined above.
3) A CV of no more than 3 pages.
