Susan and Tilly Bridges are a married writing team who have worked on properties ranging from comics to books to role playing games to television shows to films. They have been fans of nerd stuff for as long as they can remember and of Star Trek in particular to the point of claiming that they have watched every episode of the various incarnations of the show. When the opportunity arose to write a comic book adaptation of a Star Trek Voyager adventure through IDW Publishing they jumped at the chance. The result of their work is the mini series Star Trek Voyager: Homecoming which pits the crew of the famous starship against Species 8472 just as they have returned from being marooned in deep space for seven years. On This episode of the Part-Time Fanboy podcast, Kristian chats with Susan and Tilly about how they managed to create a series that appealed to fans of and newcomers to the franchise, how they approached developing Species 8472 for their book, and how they dealt with any anxieties they faced while working on a property they loved.

April Fools’ month is here so it’s time to talk about bad movies! All this month, we at the Part-Time Fanboy clubhouse will be talking about our favorite “bad” movies. This week artist and cinephile Lauren Damon picks the 2001 comedy Monkeybone! Directed by Henry Selick and starring Brendan Fraser, Bridget Fonda, and Rose McGowan, Monkeybone tells the story of what happens when an artist falls into a coma and actually gets to meet his cartoon creation. Comic book writer Travis Webb (Starlite, the upcoming Nemesis) joins in the fun as Kristian invites them into the PTF funhouse to try and figure out what Monkeybone is and what, if anything, could have saved it from being the half baked spawn of Tim Burton, Pee Wee Herman, and Roger Rabbit!

Hunters of Sheydim is a comic book about twin sisters who are agents of the Baalei Shem Tov, a secret order of Jewish demon hunters. We had the creator of the book, Jeff Marvin, on the Part-Time Fanboy podcast back in December to chat about the debut issue of the comic. The collected trade paperback of Sheydim debuted several weeks ago so Jeff returned to the show to talk about the first complete arc of the comic. Kristian chats with Jeff about how he took elements of Judaism and deftly used them to create an action-adventure series unlike any other in the comic book market today, about how Jewish mythology was presented in the book and gives it a distinct visual identity, and how Hunters of Sheydim takes a story which could initially be seen as another take on the Buffy the Vampire slayer trope and turns it into something culturally unique and interesting.

So he turned to his other passion, comics, to bring his imaginings to fruition. The result ended up being the new comic book series We Who Remain, which is about a group of individuals who must overcome the traumas they’ve faced in their lives in order to gain the abilities they need to fight a nefarious mystical foe. It’s an almost encyclopedic yet incredibly fun look at just about everything anyone would want to know about our equine associates. Jeff Marvin is a comic book writer who began his career with a book called The Virgin Killers, which was a comic about monster hunting nuns. Jeff, however, is Jewish, and as he developed the idea for his story he began to realize that he was having trouble continuing to write his tale without interjecting aspects of his own religion into the story. After a while, he decided he needed to step back from his creation and re-tool it so that it would more closely align with his own cultural experience. Thus Hunters of Sheydim was born. Hunters of Sheydim is a comic about twin sisters who are agents of the Baalei Shem Tov, a secret order of Jewish demon hunters. Aligned with Christian and Muslim monster hunting organizations, Baalei Shem Tov banished the demonic Sheydim from our plane of existence a decade ago, ushering in an unprecedented era of peace. Now the demons have returned and the alliance that defeated them finds itself splintering as the Sheydim begin exact their revenge on humanity. On this episode of the Part-Time Fanboy podcast, Kristian chats with Jeff about regaining inspiration for his comic work by using his own religious background to craft his story as well as his future plans for his own publishing company, Golem Press.

With books like Upkeep and Wardens, Ari is a writer who delves into interesting subject matter and creates characters with heart. Wardens was one of Kristian’s favorite comics of 2024. It’s about a tough as nails Jewish seamstress by the name of Rachel Tussman who gets dragged into a world of mysticism when her place of work is destroyed by a fire. With Wardens, Gross and his artist, Rob Jennex, have created a world that is evocative of the ones that characters like Popeye, Betty Boop, or Tin Tin inhabit. This week Kristian talks with Ari about crafting a comic that is a tribute to his Jewish identity, how Wardens is also a celebration of multiculturalism, and why Jewish creators haven’t always focused on telling stories centered around their own heritage.

He began his career at Milestone Media and he guided the path for the Batman stable of characters in the DC universe, serving as editor during the compelling Batman: No Man’s Land arc . Most recently he’s been writing for Todd McFarlane and Images Comics on Bloodletter , wrapping up a run on Milestone‘s The Shadow Cabinet, as well as performing editing duties for the first ever Swat Kats comic book. This year he founded Illuminous, a creative agency dedicated to helping comic book creatives foster their characters and intellectual property into stories that have longevity and cultural importance. Her latest work is writing a book for publisher Pan Universal Galactic Worldwide about the creation of the 2015 Marvel mega-event Secret Wars which is up for pre-order on Kickstarter right now. Travis Webb is a writer who’s comic Starlite was recently completed via several crowdfunding campaigns on Kickstarter. Since he was a teenager, Travis has been a fan of the cyberpunk genre, in particular of the Japanese manga and anime which made tales of a future world where cyborgs and giant mecha existed seem plausible. Then Travis discovered the films of director Albert Pyun. In movies like Cyborg and Nemesis, Pyun attempted to take the things that comics and animation had dreamed up and bring them into live action movies. Clay Adams and David Schrader are a pair of creatives who make up the production company Bloodline Pictures. Over the past several years they have had lots of success crowdfunding their horror anthology series, Nightmare Theater, as well as a host of other Kickstarter projects. Their latest project, debuting on Kickstarter on November 18th, is A Very Carmilla Christmas Carol. It’s a sequel to a series of stories that spun out of one of their original entries in the Nightmare Theater books and features the original vampire queen Carmilla, a character who predates Dracula by about 25 years. In their latest story they take Joseph La Fanu‘s creation and mix her with a bit of the old Charles Dickens X-Mas spirit. Ian Rosenberg is a First Amendment lawyer whose children became inspired to engage in protest action after the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Because of this, Rosenberg found himself in the position of explaining to his kids what their speech protections were and what punitive action their school could take against them if they chose to walk out of school in solidarity with the March for Our Lives protesters. Having already written the book The Fight for Free Speech: Ten Cases That Define Our First Amendment Freedoms, Ian saw the need to develop a resource for younger readers so they could understand their own First Amendment rights. Paired with Eisner nominated artist Mike Cavallaro, the two of them set out to create The Free Speech Handbook: A Practical Framework for Understanding Our Free Speech Protections, a book which Kristian considers to be one of the most important graphic novels published in the past several years. In June the Maverick imprint of Mad Cave Studios will be printing the second volume of Corallo’s adaptation of the nineties Saturday morning cartoon King Arthur and the Knights of Justice! This new chapter of the story reads almost like a Wrath of Khan entry in the Knights of Justice universe in that Joe has taken everything that’s come before and added a new spin on it, opening up old characters to refreshing new narratives. Just when you thought it was over…we’re back with more Damn Dirty Apes episodes! When the producer of the original Planet of the Apes film series passed away, his production company sold the rights to 20th Century Fox Studios. Stuck with the rights to a film franchise that had diminishing returns, 20th Century Fox decided that the next logical step was to take the apes to the small screen. In 1974, The Planet of the Apes television show debuted in September, failed to find an audience, and ended up being cancelled by December. On this episode of the Part-Time Fanboy podcast Kristian chats with Joe Slepski (of the Joe on Joe Podcast) and PTF regular Yvis Cannavale about the first three episodes of the POTA TV show. They discuss why the show might not have caught on with viewers, whether this new series is set in a completely new continuity from the films, and what could have possibly made the show a better watch.

Adam Rose is a comic book writer with a flair for original ideas. In his book, Huge Detective (published by Titan Comics) giants awaken from an age old sleep and go to war with normal sized humans. In the aftermath of the conflict, the giants (called “The Huge”) and humans come to a detente and a Huge and a Human must come together to solve a murder in which a normal sized serial killer believes himself to be a giant.

In his other comic, Corollary (from Source Point Press), a sci-fi universe exists where everyone and everything comes in pairs. People are all born as twins and if your twin dies, so do you. In Corollary a woman survives her twin’s death and the whole universe wants to know…how did she do it?

On this episode of the Part-Time Fanboy podcast, Kristian sits down with Adam to chat about his two comic books and how he comes up with such original ideas. They chat about how Adam’s love for Marvel and DC Comics inspired some of the ideas in his book, how he worked with the artists behind the books (Magenta King and Robert Ahmad), and how he got Paul Pope to do one of the covers of Huge Detective!

Bad Future contains stories of, well, bad futures. Moments in the near future which are dystopian in their nature. Inspired by works like Blade Runner, Bad Future features various creators looking at the world that may be coming through a somewhat pessimistic lens. One of the creators Andy tapped for his anthology is Ben Crane (creator of the all ages comic Cosmic Cadets). This week, we’re chatting about the 1981 Western vigilante bomb, The Legend of the Lone Ranger! After the blockbuster successes of Star Wars and Superman, the studios went on a frantic search for any nostalgic “heroic” property they could get their hands on. Eventually the gaze of the studios fell upon The Lone Ranger, whose adventures were originally detailed in radio shows, dime store novels, and finally television. When the time came for Kemosabe to get the big screen treatment the producers of the film decided to cast a complete unknown, Klinton Spilsbury, for the part of the titular Ranger. Unfortunately, the big screen adaptation of the Lone Ranger’s adventures didn’t sit well with critics or audiences at the time. On this episode of the podcast, Kristian has an old fashioned showdown with Joe Slepski (of the Joe on Joe Podcast) and Keith Howell on whether The Legend of the Lone Ranger is as bad as its reputed to be. Scott Chantler is a cartoonist who started his career in comics by creating graphic novels based on historical events. When his son asked him one day to make a story that had castles in it, he turned his attention toward fantasy fiction. The result was the Three Thieves series which ended up spanning seven books and would eventually win the Joe Shuster Award for Best Comic For Kids. For a long while the Three Thieves series was out of print but earlier this month Papercutz Comics began publishing new editions of the series…beginning with Three Thieves: Tower of Treasure. While there, he encounters a band of slowly degenerating humans who decide they need to know where he came from and take what they can from his simian society. Jonathan London is the head of one of the longest running nerd podcasts on the internet known as Geekscape! His brother is none other than former professional wrestler Paul London! When Paul’s career in the ring was coming to an end, Jonathan noticed that he was having a bit of a mental health crisis. To help Paul out, Jonathan decided to create a fantasy character using his brother as a template. In Paul London: Hero of the Prophecy, Jonathan cast Paul as a wrestler who finds himself transported to a magical Dungeons and Dragons-like realm where he must combat an evil sorcerer in order to free that world’s citizens from tyranny. Jonathan made a short film from the concept and shopped it around as a TV show and a film but when COVID hit, it put the breaks on almost all production around Hollywood. Jonathan then decided to go back to his first love of comics and turn Paul London: Hero of the Prophecy into a comic book…which is currently funding on Kickstarter! The original Space Ghost cartoon was one of Kristian’s absolute favorite cartoons as a kid. Something about the cosmic crusader’s adventures just tapped right into his nerd brain as a child and the character was one that he held close to his heart even into adulthood. Other than a Comico one-shot in the 1980’s, a great sequential art adaptation of SG’s adventures had never really satisfied Kristian’s urge for more serious Space Ghost tales. So when Dynamite Entertainment announced that they were doing the first Space Ghost comic in years, Kristian was skeptical…even though friend of the podcast David Pepose had been tapped to handle the writing chores. Well, the new series ended up being one of Kristian’s favorite things (comics or otherwise) of 2024 and he’d never been so happy to be wrong about something. It’s apes time again in the Part-Time Fanboy clubhouse! if there’s one thing to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, it’s that we don’t live in the reality of this film…yet. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes is the Planet of the Apes movie that might be a little too close for comfort for many viewers right now. Conquest is set twenty years after the events of Escape from the Planet of the Apes. In the year 1991, apes have become a slave caste under the authoritarian rule of Man. Hidden within this society is the intelligent ape Caesar, the offspring of Cornelius and Zira, who came from a future of sentient simians that ruled civilization. During the course of the film, Caesar observes the oppression his fellow primates live under and leads a violent revolution which becomes the origin for how apes became the masters of this fictitious society.

Richard Ashley Hamilton is a Cuban-American writer who’s worked as a screenwriter on several Dreamworks properties and in comics with publishers like Dark Horse. He currently has two young adult graphic novel titles, Scoop (currently in stores) and Tective (set to be released in December), from the Maverick imprint of Mad Cave Studios. Both detail the exploits of teenage female investigators who solve crimes but in very different worlds. In Scoop a young lady finds herself investigating incidents of the supernatural in modern day Miami while working as an intern for a local TV news station. In Tective an adolescent in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles has to figure out why her best friend has gone missing. Both books offer entertaining and intriguing spins on a type of protagonist made popular by characters like Nancy Drew and Veronica Mars. On this episode of the Part-Time Fanboy podcast Kristian chats with Richard about the inspiration behind his latest creations and how his experiences in the news industry and Hollywood helped him craft these two similar yet very different stories.

In Begin Transmission, Tilly took a deep dive into the Matrix movies and revealed the trans narrative that ran through the whole series of films. On her website, Tilly Trans Tuesdays, Tilly continued her work looking into the trans allegories which existed in other films. This week, Tilly sits down with Kristian to discuss what was one of his favorite movies of 2023…Barbie! Episode 500 is here!!!! In 1972 an animated TV show known as Gatchaman debuted in Japan that would influence a generation of children for decades to come. Debuting in the United States in heavily edited form as Battle of the Planets, Gatchaman was a cartoon show that had many a young nerd scrambling home after school to sit in front of the electric glow of their television sets. In June Mad Cave Studios kicks off a major launch of the Gatchaman franchise with a new comic book series that is based off of and exists within the continuity of the original 105 episode run of the show. This week, Kristian sits down with the writer of the new ongoing Gatchaman comic book series, Cullen Bunn. One night while at dinner with his family…Matthew’s son inspired him by coming up with the name Steamroller Man for his own superhero. Matthew took the concept of Steamroller Man and created his own webcomic…which is now on Kickstarter raising funds for its first printed edition! Joe or The Transformers and the advent of Batman: The Animated Series. Next week sees the debut of the first comic book adaptation of KAATKOJ which is being published by the Maverick imprint of Mad Cave Studios! To create the first spinoff of the series in thirty years, Mad Cave turned to writer Joe Carallo to refashion the Arthurian animated series for the modern age. John Barber and Andrew Lee Griffith are a pair of comic creators with a plethora of comic book credits between them. John has been an editor at both IDW and Marvel Comics and has written on titles as varied as Spider-Man, Back to the Future, And G.I. Joe. Andrew has written and illustrated for The Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Star Wars. While at IDW, they found that they enjoyed working together and decided to create their own project. The result is SIGNA…a star spanning sci-fi epic currently funding on Kickstarter that features humans piloting giant mecha and scrambling for survival in a universe that’s reminiscent of sci-fi classics like The Expanse or Battlestar Galactica.
