8 Things That Are Working For Music Artists

1. Social Networking

Sites like Twitter, Facebook, and even Youtube, when used correctly, are proving to be the most effective ways to build your fan base and keep them updated. Make it a point to follow other successful artists to see how they are using these tools to their advantage.

2. Creating An Artist Concept

What do you represent? What are you about? The answers to these questions are key to finding a fan base. Whether it’s connecting with avid weed smokers or others who share your political philosophy, being consistent with your message helps attract fans to you because you become a spokesman for their lifestyle. Trying to be everything to everybody never works. And if you haven’t already noticed by now, talent is key but, lyrical skill and banging beats are not a sure winning formula for success. We now live in an era where J.Cole and Lil B can coexist and be successful in hip hop. Just make sure you’re not being boring.

3. Video

Audio is good, but visual is great! It stimulates visual receptors in the brain which triggers an extra sense. This is a good thing when done well. Fans are more likely to pass around something visually entertaining than something that’s just audio. You don’t need a big budget to create something visually clever and entertaining to accompany your music.

4. Mixtapes

Free mixtapes and EPs are still proving to be effective for artist. These are done best, in my opinion, when the performances are mostly over original beats or live instrument production. Keep in mind that your beats are an important part of establishing your signature sound as well.

5. Frequent Releases

Release music and release it often! People have a short attention span and short-term memory. Keep them engaged. Don’t let them forget about you.

6. Physical Products

Tangible products are still cool. True fans still want to have something physical in their possession. CDs still sell. I’d personally like to see usb flash drives fully replace the CD format. It’s a great way give your fans extra media such as videos, pics, and higher quality files of your music. There are a lot of cool ways you can distribute them too. There are customizable usb wristbands and other cool things you can do with them. Hip hop has been the setting the trends for a long time and I believe that if our community started to collectively support a different and better format for the music, that it would no doubt become the standard for the industry as a whole.

7. Collaborations

We’re now starting to see artists from different sides of track doing more collabs these days. Why? Because they’ve figured out that it’s more productive than beefing and hatin’. You may think that other artist is garbage, but he could have and audience that’s not familiar with your music and one that would most likely become fans of yours if you two did a joint together. Beefs don’t have the shelf life they used to. Hip hop is evolving and there’s more benefit in making allies instead of enemies

8. Live Shows

I always tell artist. When you hit the stage, make sure the audience remembers you afterwards. I don’t care what you do, but leave an impression. Get your performance tight. Most of the time, this is your best opportunity to sell your music and merch. This is the time to make that audience become a believer. Do your homework. Go to Youtube and search for the live shows of other artists. Study how they put it together and work the crowd. Then make the proper adjustments and tweaks to your own show..

Rakin Niass is a conscious emcee who is no new comer to the UK Hip-Hop scene. Starting life out with the legendary UK Rap outfit Cash Crew, Rakin also went on to form the well-respected Mecca 2 Medina, the UK's first Islamic hip hop group in the UK. Paving the way for other great UK acts, Rakin dropped his debut solo mixtape 'The Road Less Travelled' in September 2010. The project was well received by media and Hip-Hop fans and featured collaborations with the likes of Tyson Amir (US), John Graham (US), Poetic Pilgrimage, Mohammed Yahya, Iron Braydz, Nomadic Poet just to name a few.

Now Rakin Niass releases his brand new seven track project 'The Clarity EP'. This is something that you will be nodding your head to over the festive season and really is conscious Hip Hop at its best. Featuring a host of talented emcees including Muneera from Poetic Pilgrimage, Tijani Conscious (US) Fiveeighty (US) Nate (People's Army) Samiyah and JoelCulpepper, this EP also includes production from French super producers RMS Trizm and Gravity.

HOW TO: Grow a Quality Twitter Following

Using Twitter? Wondering whether it is doing anything for your business?

Are you tweeting at all hours throughout the day? Is their a plan, a strategy?

Why do you need a Tweet Plan?

A tweet plan will brand your twitter presence bringing consistency and saving time.

What is a Tweet Plan?

A series of scheduled tweets, carefully crafted for the preferred audience in conjunction with real-time tweeting.

You are able to brand your Twitter presence attracting attention of the people you want to reach, providing them useful information.

Creating your Tweet Plan

1. Define your preferred audience

Whom do you want to connect on Twitter? For your Tweet Plan to be a success you should choose a few people from the different types of people who could help your business. These few would be your preferred Twitter audience. Who could these be? some suggestions: Prospects, Clients, Referral Sources, Partners, Business Network, Suppliers…

2. Decide the Number of Daily Tweets

Your Tweet Plan should only support the Tweet frequency and number of daily tweets and not be an end in itself. You need to engage with your audience by tweeting real-time sharing information and replying to their tweets. Live tweets help you to connect with people in a way that brings them beyond Twitter and leads them along the path you want to take with them.

3. Decide How Long You Want to Run Your Tweet Plan

Once you have decided on the number of tweets to send daily, you need to decide how long you would run you Tweet Plan and schedule your tweets accordingly. This would majorly depend on the speed at which you could process the feedback received from your preferred audience and include it in you next plan.

If you ask me, I would suggest a 4 week plan, since I ‘d be eager to act upon the feedback received from my preferred audience and include it in my next plan to further strengthen the connection with my market.

4. Find and Decide the Keywords You Want to Use on Twitter

Choose the right keywords to send out a consistent signal and tell your audience who you are, how you want to connect with them and what you want to talk about. Use the keywords your preferred audience uses so that it’s easier to connect with them.

If you plan to schedule 5 tweets daily, then you choose use at least 5 keywords a day so that your audience gets information on these 5 consistently. Also remember the 140 character post limit on Twitter and try to use as many small words as possible.

5. Choose different formats for your scheduled tweets.

Let’s do some math: 10 tweets daily x 7 days x 4 weeks makes it 280 tweets. That’s a big number of tweets. To make this task easy, use different formats to write the 280 unique tweets. Using different also adds to the variety and keeps your tweets from getting boring.

Why not start with 7 different formats and use 1 for each day of the week. You could further experiment to change the sequence of these formats in the next week. Here’s what you could try:

Day 1 – Qualifying questions – Relate a problem
Day 2 – Tips – Present a solution
Day 3 – Definitions – Focus on benefits
Day 4 – Provide useful links – to your blog
Day 5 – Alternate resources – provide links to market research
Day 6 – 3rd party resources – provide links to partner resources
Day 7 – Roundup – Include quotes around your business

6. Write your Scheduled Tweets

Since twitter does not allow duplicate tweets be sure to write unique tweets. While writing a tweet keep in mind:
> Your preferred audience
> Choose one keyword
> Choose one format

Also remember to create a combination of 1 keyword with 1 format. Use hashtags and try to limit a tweet to 120 characters so that it can easily be retweeted.

7. Choose Your Times

You surely do not want to send out a message to your audience that you are available during a certain time of the day or week. Choose time slots to send out your 7 scheduled tweets for the day. Spread out your tweets throughout the day. Ideally you would also be publishing your tweets in real-time.

8. Schedule Your Tweets

Last, its time to schedule your tweets. Now you need to decide on tools to schedule your tweets. Out of the many tools available you could use these 2: Hootsuite and SocialOomph
