Europane's New Savory Delight

I discovered the new Cheese Ball pastry at Europane, and it's heavenly. At first, it looked just like any puff pastry that is rolled and baked into a big, crusty, fluffy, snail shell-like croissant. It's not a croissant, but it could easily be mistaken as one at first glance. There are light flecks of sharp cheese on top -- likely cheddar -- baked in and crunchy, without overwhelming the soft, delicate and semi-spongy interior. When the lady behind the counter first told me it was a "cheese ball," my first instincts were to say under my breath, "Eww, cream cheese." However, I took a risk, based on the crusted top, which hinted at something savory, rather than sweet.

I tore open the crisp shell, and bit into the "cheeks" of the Cheese Ball. It was so light, and just hints of the sharp cheese enraptured my tongue. A perfect balance. A savory delight. I think the perfect accompaniment for this pastry would have been something other than my decaf coffee. Perhaps a perfect afternoon pairing would be an Earl Grey, or even champagne. The next time I have my Cheese Ball, I will try it with a lemon tea, laced with honey. Perhaps I will special order some for a special dinner.

Store Updates

Whoa, it's been a while since I've provided updates here. Well, in case you didn't know, my favorite Wheatberry has been gone for months now, and so is Radhika's, the Indian restaurant next to the Green Street Restaurant in Shopper's Lane. In its place, I heard it's going to be a "build your own burger" place. Hmmm... I don't know about that one.

And, Roy's Hawaiian Fusion restaurant opened on Colorado Blvd. (OMG!), right in the Playhouse District. I'm so looking forward to throwing on my newly-purchased muumuu for that one. Don't worry, it's going to be fabulous, and not like Mrs. Roper of Three's Company.

What else? Juicy Couture opened in Old Pasadena. I'm less excited about that one, because they have a slightly older (by 5 months?) one at the Americana on Brand in Glendale. Been there done that. I really like The Americana at Brand. It's the Grove, but smack in the middle of Glendale. If it weren't for the Americana, I probably would go to Glendale less.

Lots of new stores have popped up in Old Pasadena, so keep your eyes peeled. I've seen retail grand openings on Fair Oaks (Rising Sun & Co. - Tailor Made Denim & Indigo Goods) and Green Street (Asha Frozen Delights -- with free wifi -- and Daily Grind Coffee).

Pasadena Thunderstorm!

At about 4:30 p.m. this afternoon, a tropical storm broke out in the City of Pasadena, sending denizens out in the streets to seek shelter in the bustling shops of Old Town, South Lake and beyond. Minutes later, the showers were interrupted by blasts of lightning, which sounded like Mother Nature cracking an enormous egg over the City, followed by a downpour that likely made the most macho man in the neighborhood look out of his window with concern. And within 15 minutes, the rain curtain was drawn away, revealing wet pavement and drenched grass, which needed the reprieve from earlier this week's scorching heat.

And now, I must clean out my rain gutters.

My new favorite Web site is SayItWrong.com. It features researched and "confirmed" pronunciations of celebrities.

I stumbled across it while doing some research online for my writing gig. Let me tell you, I had no idea that Gerard Butler's ("Phantom of the Opera" movie and "300") first name is pronounced like JER-ed, except with the "r" back in its place. And Lohan? Yep. The "h" is silent.

Now, if only there was a Web site that would definitely tell newscasters how to pronounce foreign countries' and dictators' names consistently.

31st Occasional Doo Dah

What happened last November, in the streets of Old Town? Where were the irreverent presidential impersonators? Not a peep from the reclinable armchair on wheels? Where was the popular Briefcase Drill Team? You thought you missed the Doo Dah Parade, right? It's actually taking place tomorrow, January 20 at 11:30 a.m.

The parade will start off on Raymond Avenue at the Pasadena Senior Center, which is just a couple of blocks north of Colorado Boulevard in Old Pasadena, and head west onto Colorado Boulevard.

It's a popular Pasadena treat for the entire family. If you haven't been to the parade, then bring your lawn chair and camcorder. It's a carnival-like showing of the quirky, weird and colorful, and I don't just mean the costumes. Be prepared to participate in the world's largest public wedding shower, which will be recorded for the Guinness Book of World Records, says Ellen Snortland (Pasadena Weekly, Jan. 17). In lieu of shower gifts, consider showering "a nonprofit documentary at www.beautybitesbeast.org and donate the cost of a spatula, blender or event a new car! Whatever's comfortable for you."

Cloverfield - Monster Theory

I'm intrigued. The fact that something seemingly big enough to rip off the head of the Statue of Liberty, and throw it down the middle of Manhattan streets, was quite an attention grabber. There's a new J.J. Abrams (of television's "Alias" fame) film coming out entitled, "Cloverfield." It's supposed to be about a monster that attacks New York City. The scenes shown in the trailer seems very "Blair Witch," except it didn't make me feel as dizzy.

My theory (possible spoiler alert): it's about a giant bee or wasp. The only hint it gives from the trailer (and besides the title) is that there's the sound of something fluttering, like wings of some sort. Then, of course, the title of the film led me to think of bees. I still don't know why there was always an abundance of clover honey at the supermarkets.

I haven't seen much discussion about the film online yet. We'll see in about a week, after the sneak previews are over, whether my theory holds true.

The 'Pink' Craze

Will somebody tell me what's the big deal about the Pinkberry craze? I was overhearing folks talk about the new Pinkberry out in La Canada, while waiting to get brunch at Hill Street Cafe this past Sunday. The folks were saying something about how good the flavor was, and that you can order one that is black (with all the flavors and colors mixed together). I have yet to visit the newish location in Old Town.

I read on their Web site that they have Cap'N Crunch, Coco, and Fruity Pebbles toppings, which is pretty cool. They also have sweet rice cake as a topping under their shaved ice menu, which is intriguing enough.

Before I decide to fork over my hard-earned money for the place that "launched a thousand parking tickets," according to the Los Angeles Times, I need some local data.

Speaking of frozen treats, I had my annual visit at Carvel Ice Cream on Long Island, NY, over the holidays, and it was just as smooth, creamy and dreamy as I remember. Now, if only they would open a 24-hour drive through. Their secret is likely it's higher butter fat content, which tells me why their ice cream lasts longer than the average McDonald's soft serve.

I kid you not. A few weeks back, I saw a man driving west on Del Mar Avenue, in a shiny Honda hybrid, smoking his cigar inside his car, with the windows rolled all the way up. He was heading west on Del Mar, just west of Fair Oaks. I couldn't do anything but shake my head in disbelief of the irony of it all.

Self-Made Post-Christmas Sample Sale

Just try to work off the holiday food by walking the streets of downtown, Los Angeles. Okay, driving through downtown, or even parking there may seem a bit daunting, but the California Mart, now known as the California Market Center, will have one final December sample sale to the public this Friday, December 28, in some of their showrooms. Not all of the boutique-sized showrooms will have samples for sale, but CMC has opened their doors to the public each Friday in December for the holiday rush. Typically, they open only on the last Friday of the month for public sample sales.

This past summer, I purchased a couple of infant shorts for $5 each.

Bring lots of cash with you. Most outlets (if not all) will only conduct cash transactions.

Take the elevator up to any floor appropriate to your shopping needs. Men, women, children or maternity!

Avoid paying the $16+ dollars parking in their lot. Park at surrounding public lots for about $6!
