CBC Celebrates Veterans’ Day Tomorrow

CBC’s Veterans Alliance is hosting a Veterans’ Day celebration tomorrow. It starts at 11:30 am at the Gjerde Center. Here’s a look at the schedule of events:

11:30 am Resource and Information Tables
12:00 pm Rich Cummins, CBC President
12:10 pm Skip Novakovich and Bobby Dale from the Columbia Basin Veterans Coalition will speak about local resources for veterans
1:00 pm Light Refreshments and Networking

Tour Chiawana High School on Monday

Got any plans on Monday night? If not, why not head over to Chiawana High School for a guided tour of the new facility?

The Pasco School District will host tours this Monday at 7pm and 8 pm. They say the tour will last about an hour. It’s free and open to the public and no reservations are needed. Just show up and check out the new place. The school is located at 8125 W. Argent Road.

Free Mammograms at Lourdes’ West Pasco Location

Hey Pasco ladies — if you’re uninsured and in need of a mammogram, the Lourdes West Pasco location is offering free mammograms on October 17th (this Saturday) and October 27th. The service is by appointment only, and you have to call Lourdes at 543-7583 to get an appointment.

To qualify for the free mammograms, you’ll have to meet the following criteria:

No health insurance
Between the ages of 40-64
Never had a mammogram before
No symptoms

There may be other criteria, too, so ask when you call if you fully qualify. The Lourdes West Pasco building is located just off Road 68 in Pasco at 7425 Wrigley Drive

Allegiant Air adds Pasco (PSC) to Phoenix (IWA) flights

Here’s some good news for local travelers: Allegiant Air has just announced new, non-stop flights between Pasco (PSC) and Phoenix-Mesa (IWA). The new service will begin on November 19th and introductory fares will be as low as $59 each way. I should note that this is not Sky Harbor Airport, the main international airport in Phoenix, it’s the smaller Phoenix-Mesa airport about 20 miles east in Mesa. Still … can’t beat it, y’know?

Here are the flight details from Allegiant’s announcement:

The self-proclaimed “Official Airline for Sunshine” will launch the new scheduled service from Tri-Cities Airport to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport with two flights weekly on Thursday and Sunday. Service will begin Nov. 19 with flights departing the Tri-Cities at 4:35 p.m. arriving in Phoenix-Mesa at 8:05 p.m. Flights leaving Phoenix-Mesa will depart at 2:20 p.m. arriving in the Tri-Cities at 3:55 p.m. (all flight times are local.)

Allegiant has been offering Pasco-Vegas flights for a few years now, and I’d guess that the success of those flights led the company to add this new Pasco-Phoenix route.

As you can guess, local business leaders are happy about the news. Jim Klindworth of the Port of Pasco is quoted thusly in the news release:

“We are excited that Allegiant Air will offer nonstop service between Pasco and Phoenix-Mesa. This is an exciting new opportunity that will provide even more options for our traveling public.”

And the Tri-Cities Visitor & Convention Bureau posted on Twitter that it’s “thrilled” about the news.

I think it’s cool, too. I look at it as an excuse to go visit friends in Phoenix and have them take me to see the Seahawks play at the new Arizona Cardinals stadium.

PSC to MSP is dead … thanks, Delta

I had a feeling something was going on, and this Herald article confirms my suspicions that Delta is killing the Pasco to Minneapolis flight. Goodbye, PSC to MSP. Dang.

I have a trip coming up in October to a mid-sized city on the east coast. You can’t there directly from Salt Lake City, but I knew you could get there from Minneapolis. So I’ve been looking for flights from Pasco to this city that go through Minneapolis … only none existed. Ugh. Now I know why.

Delta is quoted in the article as saying the “economic downturn” is to blame for the route disappearing, but that doesn’t make any sense — they just added the route in April, when we were already well into the economic downturn. If anything, I’d say things have gotten better now than they were in April, so what gives, Delta?

Guess I’ll be plane-hopping across the country in October, instead of a nice, one-stop transfer at MSP. Thanks, Delta/Northwest.

Action News walks you through the process? It’s true. The actual article reads like a step-by-step guide:

Pasco’s Population Growth: Undeniable Numbers

We all know Pasco is growing by leaps and bounds — the number of new houses being built tells us that, the amount of traffic on the streets tells us that, the need for a new high school tells us that, etc., etc. And the State Office of Financial Management also tells us that with this interesting chart:

This is a chart based on the latest official population estimates for municipalities across the state. What it shows is that, back in 2000, Pasco’s population made it the 26th biggest city in Washington. But now, with all the dramatic growth, Pasco has jumped to being the 16th biggest city in the state. And no one’s grown more than Pasco. (The city at #7, with dashes for the first couple years, is Spokane Valley, which I don’t believe was considered a separate municipality until 2003.)

If you’re curious about the actual population estimates and growth, the city’s population in 2000 was 32,066 and it’s estimated in 2009 to be 54,490. That’s 70% growth in just 9 years. Amazing.

Tour of Chiawana High School

Meant to post this a couple days back, but only getting around to it now. The Pasco School District opened up the doors of Chiawana High School last week for some media tours and such, and I thought KNDU did a nice job showing the insides of a really beautiful facility. Have a look for yourself and let me know if you agree.

Pretty darn nice, isn’t it? They sure didn’t make high schools like that when I was a kid….

Children’s Museum has a new home

We can happily update this post from a couple weeks ago with news that the Three Rivers Children’s Museum has a new home, and it’s staying right in the Broadmoor Outlet Mall facility. The new location is right across the parking lot, on the side where the Van Heusen outlet store is housed.

They’ve just started relocating their stuff this weekend, and the plan is to reopen in August. Excellent news!

Pasco High Honored by Newsweek

Congrats to the Bulldogs!

Pasco High is ranked at No. 853 in Newsweek magazine’s list of the top 1,500 high schools in the U.S. Pasco’s been on the list the past four years, but this is their highest ranking yet.

Here’s how Newsweek describes the ranking system:

Public schools are ranked according to a ratio devised by Jay Mathews: the number of Advanced Placement, Intl. Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2008 divided by the number of graduating seniors. All of the schools on the list have an index of at least 1.000; they are in the top 6 percent of public schools measured this way.
