Nadal y Djokovic, los más ganadores del circuito

El tenis y la crisis (No hay Futures el mes de Enero en España) nos han llevado al continente americano, el estado de Florida. Más concretamente, en Fort Lauderdale, al norte de Miami, es donde con los jugadores Passion Talent Group hemos realizado estas semanas la parte precompetitiva de la pretemporada, jugando los Futures de Plantation, Sunrise y Weston.

Desde allí hemos seguido el primer Grand Slam del año, disputado en el continente australiano, donde los dominadores del Circuito ATP de los últimos años han llegado con un buen nivel plantándose todos ellos en las rondas finales y deleitándonos a los espectadores con partidos de infarto y en donde una vez más han demostrado el por qué de su dominio.

Precisamente en Miami hemos coincidido con Carlos Moyá, uno de los dominadores del circuito ATP durante parte de la ultima década del pasado siglo y parte de la primera del presente y que además en el Open de Australia varias veces estuvo muy cerca de alzarse con el triunfo. En una de las ediciones tan solo le paro en la final uno de los grandes, Pete Sampras.

Ha sido muy bonito que los jugadores Passion Talent Group hayan podido entrenar con él. Cuando uno esta fuera de casa se agradece mucho el encontrarse con algún paisano. Y si este además ha sido número 1 ATP, es el actual número 1 del Senior Tour, se conserva en plena forma, mantiene intactos sus tiros, principalmente su derecha, para mi una de las mejores del mundo, sigue disfrutando como el que más de entrenar, competir (ganar) y de seguir el Circuito ATP al igual que lo hacia cuando lo disputaba, se convierte en una agradable y muy formativa sesión de trabajo. Gracias Charly!.

“Son los más ganadores del Circuito” fue como describió Carlos Moyá a los protagonistas de la final unas horas antes de ella. Con prudencia, sin decantarse por alguno de ellos como favorito. Sin duda característico de alguien con buen criterio para opinar, al haber sido por méritos propios también un ganador.

Estas afirmaciones me refrescaron la memoria. Son muchos los mini-partidos que he podido presenciar en los entrenamientos entre Carlos y Rafa, pudiendo comprobar lo mucho que les fastidiaba a alguno de ellos el que el otro le derrotase. “Me pensaba que tardaría más tiempo en aparecer un jugador tan ganador como Rafa” nos comento Carlos refiriendose al imparable “Nole”. Las 6 horas de partido reflejan lo que Carlos pronosticó y lo que acaba ocurriendo cuando en la central se enfrentan dos jugadores que poseen esta virtud, la de estar dispuestos a desvanecerse con tal de no salir derrotados.

El espectáculo, una vez más, fue emocionante a pesar de las dudas de si Nadal llegaba en buena forma después de los reajustes en su juego y su raqueta, y de si Djokovic aguantaría físicamente, sobre todo después de la durísima batalla de semifinales contra Murray. Los dos se dejaron la piel desde la primera a la última bola y de ahí el marcador: 5/7, 6/4, 6/2, 6/7, 7/5.

Este empeño, este carácter, esta garra, esta ambición, … (que se plasmo en la final) son el reflejo exacto de lo que más me asombro de Rafa el tiempo que conviví con él en los torneos que le acompañé, principalmente en su etapa de Futures y Challengers. Era y es competitivo por naturaleza durante todo el día: cuadritos al iniciar o al concluir el entreno; durante el entreno, puntos; en el tiempo libre, cartas, video juegos, billar o golf; en las sesiones de preparación física…. y por supuesto siempre queriendo ganar, ganar y ganar. Que bonito espectáculo nos espera mientras Rafa y otros ganadores como el estén dispuestos a seguir batallando por Ganar!

Catedrático Federer, Copa Davis en español y Diciembre de pretemporada.

A las puertas de empezar un nuevo año, me queda analizar con ustedes el desenlace final de la ATP World Tour Finals y la Final de la Copa Davis, últimos acontecimientos tenísticos de la ya concluida temporada 2011.

El catedrático Roger Federer ha batido récords en este tramo final, encontrándose en sus mejores condiciones (Indoor hardcourt) ha dado mucho de qué hablar de nuevo. Las victorias en los ATP de Basilea, Paris y Londres le han llevado a cosechar unos números de momento no conseguidos por ningún terrestre: 100 finales ATP (70 de ellas ganadas), 6 veces campeón de la Copa Master y noveno año consecutivo en acabar dentro de los tres primeros de la ATP.

Todo lo que pueda decir de Federer en cuanto a récords y en cuanto a la facilidad que tiene para la práctica del tenis seguro que ya está dicho. Es un genio, lo que puede hacer con una raqueta y una pelota de tenis solo está a su alcance. Como entrenador de tenis admiro todo lo que es capaz de hacer y disfruto viendo su magia en la pista. Ahora a la hora de proclamar un referente a los jugadores Passion Talent Group con los que trabajamos intento que sean muy conscientes del talento innato que posee y lo que está a nuestro alcance con trabajo y lo que no.

La final de la Copa Davis de Sevilla ganada por el combinado español engrandece el Palmares nacional a cinco ensaladeras conseguidas en 12 años, se dice rápido, solo acordándonos que la primera costo más de cien años el lograrla o que países como argentina aun no tiene ninguna en sus vitrinas demuestra la impresionante hazaña conseguida por estas generaciones de tenistas españoles.

Esta final dejo dos perlas: el segundo punto conseguido por David y el tercero conseguido por Rafa ambos contra Juan Martin del Potro. Los valores que se reflejaron en estas dos batallas de más de 4 horas cada una de ellas son el fuego que debe permanecer en la mente de todos los que amamos este deporte y que nos sentimos orgullosos y participes de él.

Estos valores son los que nos hacen los mejores y con ellos siempre estaremos cerca de la gloria. Ojala seamos capaces todos los que formamos el tenis español de saber hacer la lectura correcta de lo que se está viviendo y gracias a que y no nos creamos de una raza distinta por arte de magia, tengamos muy claro y no nos olvidemos de lo que nos ha convertido en los mejores: la sencillez, el sentido común, el trabajo, la ilusión, el tesón, el respeto….

Una mañana de la semana anterior al ATP World Tour Finals de London me pase por Manacor a ver a Toni Nadal y a Rafa en el entreno. Allí como siempre disfrute de verles trabajar y de compartir charlas con ellos. Reconozco que una vez más me sorprendió el respeto hacia el adversario y la situación en si con la que Rafa se dirigió cuando se toco el tema de la final de la Davis contra Argentina, me encanta ver como Rafa sigue respetando todas estas situaciones tanto por su forma de hablar como por su forma de trabajar frente a ellas.

Diciembre tal y como ya dije hace un año en este blog es un mes especial, la mayoría de jugadores hacen la pre-temporada y no compiten con lo cual es muy buen momento para reflexionar y valorar lo que hay que mantener e incluso reforzarlo porque ha funcionado y lo que hay que cambiar para mejorar.

El año pasado fue especial para mí ya que después de muchos años no hice pretemporada con ningún jugador, es parte de la competición, la relación con los jugadores no es infinita y a veces vienen espacios en blanco y este fue uno de ellos. Aproveche para trabajar duro con el proyecto Passion Talent Group.

Quizá por este motivo este año estoy disfrutando y valorando mucho cada día de trabajo con los jugadores Andoni Vivanco, Pablo Martin, Agustín Boje, Alex Andino, Manuel Luis, además de Andrei Kusnetsov que ha trabajado junto con nosotros y otros jóvenes jugadores de Planificaciones Sport Mangement (PSM).

He intentado mediante el empeño y sobre todo la reflexión que en cada sesión de trabajo se mantuviese la intensidad física, la tensión y concentración mental necesaria para poder competir con más garantías de éxito cada día y la verdad que hay que agradecer tanto a los jugadores, como el equipo de trabajo de PSM, como al Royal Tennis Club Marbella lo mucho que han ayudado y facilitado esta labor, se que en breve dará sus frutos.

Fortaleza Mental, la poción mágica

Al escribir este artículo estamos de pretemporada con los jugadores Passion Talent Group en el Royal Tennis Club Marbella, viviendo a diario el espectáculo de los emocionantes partidos del ATP World Tour Finals de Londres, a la espera de presenciar la fiesta de la final de la Davis en Sevilla, y estupefactos por el ridículo realizado por Noah con sus acusaciones contra los deportistas españoles. También con incertidumbre, pero deseosos de ver movimientos por parte de los tenistas en busca de solucionar los problemas que hacen que este deporte se convierta en insostenible por la mayoría de ellos.

“Sin tregua en el circuito” es el titulo que le puse al artículo del mes de junio y la verdad que esta es la sensación que percibo. Se sale de una y se entra en otra semana, temporada, batalla... Es como luchar con un pulpo: te liberas de una pata y ya hay que lidiar con otra. Como para que encima aparezca el iluminado de turno y deje entrever que lo que uno consigue a base de esfuerzo diario aprendiendo a convivir, disfrutar e incluso a ser feliz, sea una farsa y se consiga haciendo trampas. No hay derecho, Noah.

La indignación me supera y más cuando conozco muy bien desde adentro, al menos en cuanto al tenis, el maratón que hay que correr para triunfar como deportista, sin saber en ningún momento con seguridad si se tendrá recompensa. Y Noah creando dudas, especulando y jugando no se sabe muy bien a qué, con opiniones sin fundamento solido alguno.

No se cómo es posible que la columna publicada en Le Monde salga del puño y letra de un ex-deportista. Me parece intolerable y se debe luchar hasta lograr que rectifiquen y tomen conciencia que han ofendido y herido a muchos sudores y sacrificios. Gracia ninguna a nadie hacen sus opiniones, y actuaciones como esta no deben pasarse por alto. Somos españoles, pero no tontos.

Y como de pretemporada estamos y no se si el Noah ha estado nunca en su vida, le invitamos a que se venga unos días con nosotros. Pero no de vacaciones sino de corto, y que algún ‘coach’ español le enseñe a racionalizar bien cada análisis incorrecto que haga y le meta de verdad el dedo en la llaga, y así igual descubrirá que el portento físico que tenia lo hubiese podido aprovechar mucho más y que sus vitrinas podrían estar más llenas si hubiese conseguido, como han hecho los deportistas españoles, la FORTALEZA MENTAL que el nunca consiguió y ellos sí. FORTALEZA MENTAL es la pócima mágica que tenemos en España querido Noah.

Hace unas semanas aprovechando que se celebraba el Campeonato de España Absoluto en Barcelona en el Club Esportiu Laietá, organizamos una reunión e invitamos al presidente de la Asociación de Deportistas Españoles (AD), Emilio Sanchez Vicario, para que nos presentase la Asociación así como sus funciones actuales y futuras.

Emilio hizo una exposición muy clara de lo que es la AD: “La Asociación que agrupa y defiende los derechos de todos los deportistas españoles” y de la que se puede conseguir toda la información en http://www.asociacióndeportistas.org/

El objetivo es muy claro: hay que unirse y asociarse para pasar al segundo punto del orden del día cuanto antes: Tomar nota de todas las propuestas que hagan los protagonistas (jugadores y ‘coaches’) que son los que conocen sus problemas de verdad, antes de que sea tarde. “Hay que atarse lo cordones porque si tenemos que esperar que nos alfombren el camino y nos solucionen los problemas, creo que será tarde”

Murray, ¿Para Cuando un Grand Slam? / Murray, ¿When will you win a Grand Slam?

Han pasado casi dos meses desde el último post y el circuito ATP no ha parado. El ATP 1000 de París con Federer como campeón por primera vez al igual que el ATP 250 de Basilea pero por quinta vez y el ATP 500 de Valencia con el sorprendente Marcel Granollers como máximo protagonista y finalmente emocionante vencedor ha sido lo más destacado de Noviembre.

Andy Murray es el hombre que este año ha triunfado en la gira Asiática, ha sido el líder indiscutible de octubre: venció en las finales de Bangkok (250 ATP) al joven Young, Tokio (500 ATP) al experimentado y rival directo por delante de el, Rafael Nadal y en Shanghái (1000 ATP) al de cada vez más completo David Ferrer y también rival directo del escocés aunque por detrás de el.

Que los partidos sean a tres sets y la ausencia de alguno de los mejores como en este caso Djokovic y Federer en la gira asiática podrían ser los principales motivos por los que Murray tenga en su haber varios ATP 1000 pero ningún Grand Slam.

Muchas veces he oído la pregunta ¿cuándo ganará Murray un Grand Slam? Para mi en el párrafo anterior se fundamenta la respuesta: cuando esté preparado mentalmente para disputar partidos a 5 sets contra los mejores y confíe plenamente en sus posibilidades en estas situaciones o bien cuando tenga la suerte de que los mejores estén ausentes en el torneo o al menos en las rondas finales a las que él se pueda enfrentar a ellos. Depende del trabajo que el haga, yo soy de los que creo que Murray tiene margen de mejora sobre todo en el aspecto mental y nivel de tenis más que suficiente para conseguirlo.

La clasificación de David Ferrer para el ATP World Tour Finals de Londres que se juega esta semana, junto con la Victoria de Granollers en el ATP 500 de Valencia y la clasificación para disputar la Final de la Davis son las mayores alegrías por lo que concierne a nuestros compatriotas.

Una vez más es maravilloso como españoles el poder disfrutar más que nunca de las finales de grandes eventos como el de Shanghái, Tokio, Valencia, (actualmente) Londres y (próximamente) Sevilla porque nuestros tenistas estén presentes. Es toda una gozada y ojala lo podamos seguir viviendo muchos años más.

Ramos, Riba, Carreño, Martí, Olaso, Bautista, Cervantes, Burgués, Granollers (junior), Carballes... son los nombres propios más cercanos a dar continuidad a lo que estamos viviendo actualmente con Nadal, Ferrer, Almagro, Verdasco, López, Granollers, Andújar, Robredo, Montañés, García,... y que estamos disfrutando desde que Moya y Ferrero encabezasen la clasificación mundial ATP de la era moderna.

Como Passion Talent Group estamos muy orgullosos en especial de la entrada al top de 200 de la ATP del Former Player Passion Talent Group Javier Martí que a finales de octubre ha conseguido un nuevo trofeo de Campeón en un Future este año, en esta ocasión en Croacia y que tan cerca estuvo de ganar en Valencia a Tsonga (al que estoy viendo jugar ahora el 3er set con Federer en el ATP World Tour Finals). Estamos convencidos que está rodeado y dando los pasos para poder unirse en breve a las rondas finales de las grandes torneos con los jugadores antes nombrados.

La Final de la Copa Davis contra Argentina es sin duda toda una fiesta para los aficionados al deporte de nuestro país. Su celebración en Sevilla será algo de nuevo imborrable en nuestras retinas al igual que lo fue la celebrada en el mismo escenario en el 2004 contra los americanos.

Nuestros deseos van más allá. Deseamos que la ITF reflexione frente las demandas de los jugadores tanto en la Copa Davis, los Grand Slam y los Futures y que la Real Federación Española sea inteligente en los tiempos que corremos en la gestión de los beneficios económicos que supone la clasificación y la organización de esta nueva final.

Estas instituciones se deben de dar cuenta que son muchos los jugadores que no llegan a poder convertir el tenis en su profesión y no precisamente por falta de ilusión, trabajo o nivel sino por la mala gestión y poca insistencia a la hora de buscar soluciones que logren que los jugadores que son los auténticos protagonistas del circo se beneficien mayoritariamente de lo que mueve su deporte.

De momento el resultado no es positivo. Este mes de Enero, después de muchos años, todos aquellos jugadores que empezaban el año en los Futures de Mallorca tendrán que buscar otras alternativas para poder competir fuera de nuestro país ya que en España el mes de Enero no hay Futures. Una pena!

Two months have passed by since my last post and the ATP tour hasn’t stop running. Federer has won the Paris ATP 1000 for the first time and he has won the Basel ATP 250 for the fifth time. Marcel Granollers has been the main character of the Valencia ATP 500, winning it. These has been the November highlights.

Andy Murray is the man that has had the most success in the Asian tournaments. He has been the top player in the month of October: He beat Young in the Bangkok finals (250 ATP), he beat the experienced and direct rival Rafael Nadal in the Tokyo finals (500 ATP) and he beat David Ferrer in the Shanghai finals (1000 ATP) who is becoming an all around player and is a direct rival as well, but behind Murray.

The fact that matches are the best to three sets and that some of the top players, like in this case Djokovic or Federer, do not attend some events, could be some of the main reasons why Murray has a lot of ATP 1000 but no Grand Slams.

I have heard a lot of times the question, when will Murray win a Grand Slam? To me the answer is based on the previous paragraph: When he becomes better prepared mentally and physically to play a five set match against the best players in the world and he has plenty of confidence in his possibilities in this situations, or when he is so lucky that the best players in the world don’t attend a Grand Slam or they don’t make it to the last rounds. It depends on the way he works. I am one of those who believes that Murray has a lot of room of improvement, especially in the mental side. He has more than enough tennis level to achieve that.

David Ferrer qualifying for the ATP world Tour Finals in London which is played this week, together with Granollers victory in the Valencia ATP 500 and the Spanish team qualifying for the finals of the Davis Cup are the highlights of our fellow citizens.

Once again, it is so unbelievable as Spaniards to be able to enjoy more than ever the finals of big events like Shanghai, Tokyo, Valencia and the one of Sevilla coming up soon, just because our tennis players are in there. Its such a joy and I hope we can be able to live this situations in the years to come.

As Passion Talent Group we are very proud of the Former Player Passion Talent Group Javier Marti for breaking the top 200 by winning another Futures this year, this time in Croatia. He was very close to beat Tsonga (who I am watching playing the 3rd set right now against Federer in the ATP Tour Finals) in Valencia. We are sure that he is taking the right steps to join soon the finals rounds of the big tournaments with the previously stated players.

The Davis Cup finals against Argentina are without a doubt a big party for the fans here in Spain. This event hosted by Sevilla will be once again something we will not forget, as the one in 2004 was against the Americans.

Our wishes go further. We wish that the ITF thinks about the players’ demands regarding the Davis Cup, Grand Slams and Futures. We also hope that the RFET (Spanish Federation) is able to use the benefits of organizing this Davis Cup finals wisely since we are going through tough times.

These organizations should realize that there are a lot of players that can’t make tennis become their profession and is not not for lack of will, work or level. It is because of the bad use of resources and the lack of search for solutions to make tennis players benefit of all what their sport move. they are the main characters in this circus.

Up to now the result is not positive. This January, after a lot of years, the players that used to begin the year in the Futures of Mallorca will have to find some alternatives to compete out of our country since there is no Futures in Spain during that month. What a pity!

Y Campeón US Open / And US Open Champion

Paso el verano y de nuevo con todos ustedes, han sido unos meses muy buenos y ajetreados de torneo en torneo (Future o Challenger) por toda la Península Ibérica con los jugadores Passion Talent Group: Pablo Martin, Guillermo Gomez, Mikey Suleau, Alex Andino y Manu Lamelas.

Ellos han sido la prioridad de mi tiempo durante estos meses. Me ha servido de breve descanso del blog, (no por falta de ganas), del twitter, del facebook,.... pero es para mi una gran satisfacción seguir compartiendo con todos vosotros mis vivencias, planteamientos y puntos de vista. Gracias por seguirme.

Pocas cosas han cambiado tenísticamente hablando, desde el último post que escribí. Su titular decía “Novak coleccionista de Australia, Campeón Wimbledon y auténtico número 1” ahora hay que añadir “Y Campeón US Open”.

Lo que esta haciendo Djokovic esta temporada es impresionante hasta me atrevería a decir irrepetible. Lo único que uno puede hacer es quitarse el sombrero, felicitarle y aprender de su evolución.

Ahora más que nunca las palabras que Toni Nadal nos descubrió en la entrevista previa a Wimbledon, que yo personalmente le hice en exclusiva para este blog, cuando le dijo a su sobrino Rafael Nadal: “tenemos un problema” (al referirse a Djokovic la primera vez que lo vio jugar hace años en Wimbledon) cogen peso y volumen de verdad.

En el último artículo también resaltaba la suerte que como españoles tenemos de poder seguir disfrutando aun más de las grandes citas como las finales de los Grand Slam porque en ellas esta un paisano nuestro que además es el mejor reflejo posible que alguien pueda desear. Los valores que Rafa ha hecho propios y trasmite en cada partido son maravillosos incluso en estas dolorosas derrotas como la pasada final del US Open.

La final la presencie en una cafetería de Madrid y al tratarse de altas horas de la noche tan solo quedamos en ella: el dueño de la cafetería, “Manu” (joven jugador PTG) y yo. El dueño del comercio se deshizo en elogios hacia Rafa y se sentía orgullosísimo del ejemplo que da Rafa al resto del planeta, sobre todo a los jóvenes pero también a la sociedad en general incluso como destaqué anteriormente frente las derrotas.

En este nuevo ciclo del blog, hay un tema muy importante que va a centrar bastante mi atención y más ahora que es actualidad y hasta una necesidad. Es la falta de soluciones que la ITF da por el bien del tenis profesional. Quiero aprovechar y lanzar una lanza en favor de las reivindicaciones que Rafael Nadal en primera persona y en representación de muchos compañeros está lanzando a la ITF y que parece que en lugar de encajarse constructivamente se están recibiendo como ataques.

Desde el último artículo a principios de julio que redacte en Pozoblanco (Córdoba), he estado trabajando en los Futures (torneos controlados por la ITF) de Elche, Gandía, Denia, Irún, Orense, Santander, Getafe, Alcorcón y ahora me encuentro en Mairena de Aljarafe (Sevilla) y en los Challengers (torneos controlados por la ATP) Segovia, San Sebastián, Sevilla y Madrid. Más que nunca quiero decir en voz alta que no tienen nada que ver los eventos controlados por la ATP y los controlados por la ITF y como podéis imaginar sé lo que me digo porque vivo de los jugadores que viven como pueden de estos torneos.

Es una autentica vergüenza como los directivos amateurs de la ITF y en ella incluyo las Federaciones Nacionales y Regionales (aunque no todas) tienen estos torneos totalmente abandonados, cobrando además una cuota llamada IPIN a todos su participantes. Estos ingresos no repercuten en ninguna mejoría hacia los jugadores. Esto demuestra que la ITF únicamente trata a los jugadores como mercancías.

Directivos, abran los ojos ya de una vez por todas y preocúpense de lo que bajo mi humilde criterio deben de preocuparse, de los deportistas.

No puede ser que en los torneos Future que ganó Rafael Nadal en 2002 ganase más dinero que lo que gana ahora un jugador cuando lo gana en el 2011 y el café en aquellos años costase céntimos y ahora supere el Euro, esto sin hablar del coste de los hoteles, viajes, cordajes como para que encima se inventasen una cuota que antes no se cobraba y ahora sí.

Rafa, estamos contigo en tus reivindicaciones, se que conoces bien de lo que hablamos porque pasaste por lo mismo y tienes amigos que están pasando por ello. Sabemos que también vas a reivindicar soluciones en este sentido para los jugadores que se ven en manos de los torneos organizados por la ITF durante la mayor parte del año.

Estamos redactando una lista de propuestas constructivas para solucionar el abandono de estos torneos y estos jugadores y te la facilitaremos para que nos puedas dar tu opinión y además nos ayudes a que nos presten atención.

The summer is gone and now I am back with all of you. These past few months have been very good and very busy from tournament to tournament (Future or challenger) across the Iberian Peninsula with the Passion Talent Group players Pablo Martin, Guillermo Gomez, Mikey Suleau, Alex andino and Manu Lamelas.

They have been my priority during these past months. I used them as a break from the blog (not because I didn’t want to), from twitter, from facebook… but it is a great satisfaction to keep sharing all my stories, thoughts and points of view with you all. Thank you for following me.

Few things have changed in the tennis world since the last post that I wrote. Its title was “Novak: Collector of Australia, champion at Wimbledon and an authentic Nº1”. Now we have to add “And US open champion”.

What Djokovic is doing this season is unbelievable. I would even dare to say unrepeatable. The only thing one can do is to tip your hat, congratulate him and learn from his evolution.

Now more than ever, the words that Toni Nadal shared with us in the interview right before Wimbledon, that I personally did exclusively for this blog, when he told his nephew Rafael Nadal:”we have a problem” (referring to the first time he saw Djokovic playing some years ago in Wimbledon), become a very serious statement.

In the last article I also remarked how lucky we are as Spaniards to be able to keep enjoying even more the big meetings like the Grand Slam finals because in those we have our neighbor. Furthermore, he is the best role model that anybody can hope for. The values that Rafa has made of his own and that he transmits in each of his matches are marvelous even in those painful defeats like the last one in the US Open.

I watched the finals in a cafeteria in Madrid and since it was very late at night there was only left Manu (young PTG player), the owner and me. The owner of the bar was full of praise to Rafa and he felt so very proud of the role model that he is for the whole planet, specially for young people but to the whole society as well like I said before when he has tough losses.

In this new cycle of the blog there is a new topic that is going to be the main focus of my attention specially now that is something going on right now and even a necessity. I mean the lack of solutions given by the ITF to make professional tennis better. I want to use this and personally support his point of view and the point of view of many others regarding the ITF. It seems that instead of using his opinion in a productive way they are thinking of it as attacks.

Since the last article I wrote at the beginning of July in Pozoblanco ( Cordoba), I have been working in the Futures (tournaments controlled by the ITF) of Elche, Gandia, Denia, Irun, Orense, Santander, Getafe, Alcorcon and now I am in Mairena del Aljarafe (sevilla). I have also worked in the Challengers (Tournaments controlled by the ATP) of Segovia, San Sebastia, Sevilla and Madrid. More than ever I want to say out loud that it is not possible to compared the tournaments controlled by the ATP and the ones controlled by the ITF and you can imagine that I know what I say because I live of the players that try to live the way they can in this tournaments.

It is a complete shame how the amateur executives of the ITF, and in there I include the executives of the national and regional federations (not all of them), have abandoned these tournaments. They are even charging all the players with a fee called IPIN. This income does not lead to an improvement towards the players at all. This is a prove that the ITF only thinks about the players as assets.

Executives, open your eyes once and for all and start focusing on what, from my humble perspective, matters the most: the players.

It is not possible that in the Futures that Rafael Nadal won in 2002 he earned more money than what a player today earns. Coffee in those years cost cents and now it costs a Euro, and we are not even talking about the hotels, trips, stringing…. and on top of that they came up with a fee that they did not used to charge and they do now.

Rafa, we are all with you. I know that you know very well what we are talking about because you had to go through that and you have friends that are going through it right now. We all know that you are going to ask for solutions for the players that are involved right now in tournaments organized by the ITF during the most part of the year.

We are creating an outline with constructive proposals to solve the abandonment of these tournaments and these players. We will give it to you so you can give us your opinion and help so they pay attention to us.

Novak Coleccionista de Australia, Campeón Wimbledon y auténtico Nº 1 / Novak: Collector of Australia, champion at Wimbledon and an authentic Nº1

Pozoblanco (Córdoba) presenciando la gran final de Wimbledon entre los números 1 Nadal y Djokovic, todo un lujo sin ninguna duda la posibilidad que tenemos como españoles de disfrutar aun más estas grandes citas.

No es la primera vez que sigo el torneo de Wimbledon desde Pozoblanco en donde se disputa por estas fechas un ATP Challenger. La edición de este año es la número 20. Todo un milagro el que consigue esta población cordobesa capitaneada por un loco Fabian Dorado que hace de su sueño una realidad: organizar el Challenger más cariñoso del mundo.

Son varios los años que he seguido partidos de Wimbledon desde esta localidad. En especial recuerdo el que supuso la despedida Andrea Agassi de la catedral del tenis precisamente contra Rafael Nadal. En mi mente quedo grabada la llamada que recibí de Rafa después del macth preguntándome con inocencia si había visto el partido. Me contó que estaba nervioso que en el peloteo de calentamiento no había podido meter una bola dentro. La situación le llevaba mucho respeto incluso al ganarle le cedió todo su merecido protagonismo.

Similar es el respeto que percibo entre ambos protagonistas de esta final que ha empezado 4/6 arriba Novak. Quizás más respeto de Rafa hacia Novak y la verdad que no es para menos con el nivel impresionante que este año, en todos los aspectos, está manteniendo. 0/3 ahora en el segundo set, va todo muy rápido.

En estos momentos quiero homenajear a Rafa por todo lo que esta aportando, su número de torneos ganados que ya es conocido por todo el mundo y solo al alcance de muy pocos. Lo que igual la gente no conoce es toda la repercusión y beneficios que estas victorias están generando sobre todo al tenis español.

En mi niñez y adolescencia, cuando en algún periódico, en algún informativo o en algún medio sacaban alguna noticia de tenis, era como un rayo de sol como los que salen de vez en cuando en la catedral de Londres. En cambio hoy en día gracias a Rafa el tenis en los medios españoles resplandece al igual que lo hace el sol en Pozoblanco, todo el día y a todas horas.

En todos los medios visuales, escritos, online... tenemos a nuestra disposición el tenis que queremos, artículos de gente muy experimentada: periodistas especializados, ex jugadores analizando en primera persona, foros, debates, crónicas... Nuestro deporte debe saber aprovecharlo y como no mantenerlo.

Precisamente gracias a una de las crónicas de un medio escrito de nuestro país realizada por un gran ex-número uno como Carlos Moya, gran amigo de Rafael y gran seguidor suyo (tanto o más que yo), pude realmente tomar consciencia de lo que este fanatismo me impedía y valorar en la justa medida lo que está haciendo Novak este año.

1/6 ha ganado el segundo set. “Charly” Moya destacaba la mejora de Novak de antes, con el que se enfrento más de una vez e incluso se aprovecho de alguno de sus partidos regalo, al de esta temporada que ha desbancado del cetro mundial nada más y nada menos que a dos gigantes pero gigantes de verdad: Roger Federer y Rafael Nadal. Tan gigantes que para desbancarles hasta el día de hoy lleva meses habiendo perdido un solo partido y precisamente contra uno de estos gigantes, Roger, en su mejor versión en tierra.

Antes decía lo del gran respeto entre ambos porque siempre así lo he percibido. Es evidente que el partido está resultando ser extraño ahora. Rafa es quien se ha adelantado 3/0 en el 3er set. Este respeto, tratándose de una final de Wimbledon donde hay tanto en juego, se multiplica.

6/1. El 3er set para Rafa y dos iguales con un break para cada lado en el cuarto. Rafa no aprovechó una bola de break en el juego inicial que creo que puede ser crucial para el desenlace final del partido que no podré seguir ya que tengo que salir para la pista de calentamiento del Challenger. Pablo Martín en breve disputa su partido de última ronda de previa y hay que calentar los motores.

Guillermo Gómez ,un jugador con el que trabajé bastante desde la Escuela Balear del Deporte antes de irse para Alicante para posteriormente irse a Atlanta con una beca gracias a America International a estudiar en la Universidad de Georgia Tech y a seguir jugando al tenis (actualmente es el 3ero en singles en la NCCA), es quien desde Atlanta gracias a los adelantes tecnológicos (WhatsApp) me va informando casi de cada punto.

Me pone al corriente del break que hace Djokovic con 4 iguales, en donde Rafa hace algún que otro fallo con doble falta incluida, y del juego en el que Novak cierra el partido con su saque para proclamarse nuevo campeón de Wimbledon y conseguir su sueño además de continuar con excelente media de partidos ganados por solo uno perdido. Enhorabuena Novak te lo mereces ya eres un autentico número 1.

Para acabar este Post dominguero no puedo olvidarme que precisamente justo 6 años atrás en Alicante dos jugadores con los que trabaje bastante disputaron la final de Campeonato de España Júnior Borja Martinez ganó a Nacho Coll en una gran final muy disputada a tres sets ambos venían de ganar a Guillermo Gómez y a Albert Ramos respectivamente en semifinales también en partidos muy duros a tres sets. Bonitos recuerdos!

Muchos ánimos para lo Players Passion Talent Group Sergio Gutierrez “Guti” y Agustín Boje que precisamente les vi jugar por primera vez en el Campeonato de España Junior 2005 frente a Nacho Coll y BorjaMartinez respectivamente y que después de muchos años están pasando un verano distinto involuntariamente ya que se están recuperando de una lesión con operación incluida. Mucha fuerza a los dos ya queda menos para estar de nuevo dando guerra. Vaaaaaaaa!!!

Pozoblanco (Cordoba) watching the finals of Wimbledon in between the number ones Nadal an Djokovic. Without a doubt, is a luxury the possibility that we have as Spaniards of enjoying even more these big events.

It is not the first time that I follow Wimbledon from Pozoblanco, where there is an ATP challenger around this time every year. This is the twentieth time that this town has hosted this tournament. It is a miracle what this southern town is achieving, lead by a crazy Fabian Dorado who makes his dream come true: to organize the most welcoming challenger in the world.

I have followed the Wimbledon matches from this city for quite a few years. Especially I remember the match that became the goodbye to the tennis Cathedral of Andrea Agassi, and it was against Rafael Nadal. It was engraved in my mind the call that I got from Rafa just after the match asking me with some innocence if I watched the match. He told me that he was nervous, that he couldn’t make a ball in the warm up. He had a lot of respect for that situation and even when he won he stepped aside to let him be the well deserved center of attention.

It is very similar the respect that he perceive in between the two players of this final, where Novak has taken the lead with a 4/6 score in the first set. Maybe Rafa has more respect for Novak and the truth is that is normal since he has shown an incredible level during this year. 0/3 in the second, everything is going very fast.

At this moment I want to honor Rafa for everything he his giving and the number of tournaments that he is won, known by the whole world and only at the reach of a few persons. What maybe is not known by most of the people is the repercussion and benefits that his wins are generating specially to tennis in Spain.

When I was a kid and a teenager and some newspaper, some TV news or any media would show some tennis news, it felt like a sunlight beam like the ones that appear every once in a while in the tennis Cathedral of London. However, nowadays, thanks to Rafa, tennis is all over the media in Spain and it shines like the sun of Pozoblanco, everyday during the whole day.

In all visual, written and online media, we have at our reach the tennis that we want and articles from people with a lot of experience: specialized journalists, former pro-players analyzing in first person, forums, debates, chronics… our sport must know how to take advantage of it and how to maintain it.

Thanks to one of the chronics of a newspaper written by a former number one like Carlos Moya, great friend of Rafael and a great fan of his (like me or even more), I could finally realize about something that this fanaticism didn’t allow me to and be able to value what Novak is achieving this year.

1/6 Novak has won the second set. “Charly” Moya highlighted the improvement of the old Novak, against the one he played more than once before and even Carlos took advantage of one of his “present” matches, and the Novak of this season who has taken away the top position of world tennis from two truly gigantic players: Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. So gigantic that to take them away from the top, Novak has had to win all the matches but one since January, and the one that he lost was against Roger, who showed his best version in clay.

I mentioned before the big respect in between these two players because I have always perceived it. It is evident that the match is becoming awkward now. Rafa is the one that has taken the lead now 3/0 in the third set. This respect, specially in a Wimbledon final where there is a lot in the line, gets multiplied.

6/1. The third set is for Rafa and now is two all with a break point chance for both of them in the beginning of the fourth set. Rafa did not take advantage of it and I believe that this could be the difference maker at the end of the match, but I won’t be able to follow it because I have to go to the practice courts of the Challenger. Pablo Martin is going to start shortly his last round of qualys and it is time to warm up.

Guillermo Gomez, a player who I worked with a lot in the “Escuela balear del deporte” before he went to Alicante and then went to Atlanta thanks to America International to study in the university of Georgia Tech, where he kept playing tennis (currently 3rd in the NCAA singles Rankings), is the one who from Atlanta, and thanks to the technological improvements (WhatsApp) is updating me almost point by point.

He tells me about the break for Djokovic with four all, where Rafa makes a couple of mistakes and even a double fault, and then he tells me about the game where Novak clinches the Championship and achieved his dream. He even continued his great winning streak with just one loss. Congrats Novak, you deserve it and you are an authentic number 1.

To wrap up this Sunday post I can’t forget about something that happened exactly six years ago in Alicante, where two players that I worked with played the finals of the Spanish National Championship under 18. Borja Martinez beat Nacho Coll in a good three set match. They got there beating Guillermo Gomez and Albert Ramos in semifinals in two difficult three set matches too. Good times!

Cuidemos nuestro tesoro / Let’s take care of our treasure

De nuevo con todos ustedes, Colombo se encuentra hace más de una semana en Marbella en el Club de Tenis el Casco en donde Planificaciones Sport Management (PSM) tiene su centro de operaciones y Passion Talent Group uno de sus Facilities.

El fin de semana pasado disfrute mucho viendo las rondas finales del Torneo PSM perteneciente al Circuito Nike junior Tour Alevín e infantil que por primera vez se celebró en Marbella en el Casco.

Durante la semana ha sido una satisfacción el estar ayudando a Javier Fernandez, director deportivo de PSM, con sus grupos de competición que tan buena linea llevan y tan buenos frutos ya están dando. Precisamente esta semana uno de estos jugadores, Alejandro Serrano, ha llegado hasta semifinales en el campeonato de mundo Benjamin disputado en Croacia.

También he ido intercambiando opiniones y reflexiones que nos ayudan a crecer con el Institucional Player Passion Talent Group Pablo Martin que sigue con la ilusión de seguir superandose y subir posiciones en la clasificación ATP. Mucha suerte Pablo.

Al mismo tiempo hemos encontrado espacios para poder seguir los partidos y los momentos más vibrantes de lo que ha sido la primera semana de Wimbledon 2011. Lo hemos seguido desde su fase previa en la que los españoles y compañeros Rober Bautista y Guille Olaso muy cerca han estado de superarla. A los pasos dados por los favoritos: Federer, Nadal, Djokovic y Murray, los españoles: Ferrer, Lopez, Almagro, Verdasco,..., las nuevas generaciones: Tomic, Dimitrov, Harrison,... y como no al Former Player Passion Talent Group James Ward a quien hay que felicitarle por su fenomenal resultado llegando a las semifinales de Queen´s.

Todo esto al mismo tiempo que Emilio Sanchez Vicario nos deleitaba con un nuevo post UK Tennis, Murray & Wimbledon en su blog http://emiliosanchezvicario.wordpress.com/ y que como en la mayoría de sus artículos despertó recuerdos y reflexiones en mi cabeza. Primero porque nombra Bournemouth en donde hace ahora un poco más de dos años estuve con Agustín Boje, Nacho Coll y Andoni Vivanco (este último gano el Future que allí se celebro).

Y sobre todo cuando compara la realidad del tenis en UK respeto a España, dice: “Se trata de uno de los países con más recursos para el tenis gracias a Wimbledon, ya que dispone de 25.000 pistas, 5.000 clubs, más de 500.000 licencias, y un centro de tenis nacional, la joya de la corona, que costó más de 50 millones de euros. Nosotros, en España, no tenemos un centro nacional, disponemos de unas 5.000 pistas, 1.000 clubs y 100.000 licencias, y no tenemos un torneo como Wimbledon que todo lo que reporta es para el desarrollo del tenis. UK nos da una paliza en cuanto a recursos, pero en cambio nosotros les ganamos en que, de los clubs que hay en España, hay unos cien que se vuelcan completamente en la competición tanto de la base, del tenis juvenil y de la fase de transición. Con esta labor, estos clubs son los artífices directos de nuestro éxito; disponen de escuela de competición, donde hay numerosos ex jugadores, organizan torneos, y los coaches se implican en el desarrollo de sus jugadores y les acompañan a competir. Es aquí donde está la diferencia, y por eso tenemos 14 jugadores en el top 100 de la ATP, mientras que los ingleses sólo tienen uno, y que además se ha formado con nosotros”.

Oír esto de un experto como Emilio Sánchez me da más seguridad aun si cabe sobre mi planteamiento de que Passion Talent Group tenga su sede principal en los torneos que precisamente se celebran la mayoría en algunos de estos 100 clubs que antes Emilio menciona. Y que incluso formalice acuerdos con alguno de ellos como es el que tiene con PSM que gestiona el Casco o con Premier Sport que dirige los Clubs Vilamoratennis y Vale do Lobo Tennis en Algarve, Portugal.

Gracias a estas asociaciónes simultaneas entre Clubs y Passion Talent Group se mejora la calidad de la formación del tenis juvenil y sobre todo de la transición a profesional tan importante. Además de lo positivo que supone el poder conseguir ofrecer este servicio sin tener que dejar al cien por cien el entorno familiar que les proporciona su club de siempre.

En el articulo Emilio sigue diciendo: “los mandamases del tenis inglés deberían preguntarse ¿por qué? ¿Qué deben hacer para que las generaciones de jóvenes, no se queden en el camino?”. Yo les añadiría que copien aspectos del sistema español y más aun cuando sus dos mejores tenistas Murray y Ward se han creado en España en la Sanchez-Casal y en Equelite-Ferrero respectivamente.

Les puedo garantizar que lo que comenta Emilio en su post: “Los países que optan por tener un centro nacional, con el que hacen competencia a todos los clubs en lugar de potenciarlos, terminan fracasando. El autoritarismo del monopolio es lo peor para este deporte y su desarrollo”. Es verídico, Colombo tuvo la oportunidad varios meses gracias a James Ward de trabajar y conocer de lleno el funcionamiento del National Tennis Centre NCA y observar el monopolio autoritario que tiene la Lawn Tennis Association LTA y lo paralizado que tiene el desarrollo del tenis Ingles.

Todo esto también debe servir para que nuestros mandatarios nacionales y regionales vean y entiendan lo que no funciona y hacia donde no deben dirigirse y si en cambio lo que deben de potenciar.

Quiero felicitar a Emilio y a su equipo una vez más por adelantarse, buscar soluciones y no esperar que alguien saque la alfombra sino atarse los zapatos si hace falta y crear la Fundación Emilio Sanchez Vicario http://www.fundacionemiliosanchezv.org/ con el objetivo de recaudar fondos, destinando una parte de ellos en forma de becas a los jóvenes con escasos recursos económicos.

En la competición nos comenta Emilio “se necesita implicación y seguimiento en las competiciones por parte de los Coaches” lo mismo me viene repitiendo Toni Nadal muchas veces.

Hace años, cuando no existía el consumismo actual, esta dedicación no siempre era remunerada era más causante de la ilusión. Hoy en día no es nuevo si digo que parte de esta ilusión se ha perdido pero también es cierto que estos entrenadores tiene que afrontar muchos más gastos que el consumo actual inevitable les obliga y que aunque quieran no pueden dedicar tiempo por amor al arte. Por esto todo este tipo de iniciativas como la de Emilio Sanchez me parecen formidables para hacer frente a estas situaciones que son en las que principalmente nuestros mandatarios deberían estar centrados.

Cambiemos de chip: Federer, Nadal , Djokovic, Murray, Ferrer, Del potro, Tsonga, Gasquet, … son algunos de los nombres que quedan en juego en la hierba londinense y que lucharan esta semana por vencer en la Catedral del tenis. Unos pocos días nos separan de conocer el vencedor y de si habrá cambios en la clasificación mundial. Disfrutemos todos una vez más del espectáculo y sigamos cuidando a los clubs, escuelas de competición, torneos, coaches, jugadores …este es nuestro tesoro!.

I’m back again with all of you, Colombo has been in Marbella (Spain) for more than a week in the “Club de Tenis el Casco” where Planificaciones Sport Managemten (PSM) has its headquarters and it is as well one of the facilities of Passion Talent Group.

Last weekend I had a great time watching the final rounds of the PSM tournament, which belongs to the Nike Junior Tour, of the 12 and under and 14 and under events. It is the first time that this tournament is played in Marbella.

It has been very rewarding to be helping Javier Fernandez (Sports director of PSM) during this week. I have helped the competition groups, which are improving a lot and are already showing some results. One of these players, Alejandro Serrano, has reached the semifinals of the 10 and under world championship, which was played this past week in Croatia.

have been exchanging opinions, which help us improve, with the Passion Talent Group Institutional Player Pablo Martin, who keeps his motivation high to keep improving and go up in the ATP rankings. Good luck Pablo.

At the same time we have managed to find time to follow the matches and the best moments of the first week of Wimbledon. We have followed it since the qualifying round where the Spaniards and parteners Roberto Bautista and Guillermo Olaso have been very close to move to the main draw. We have followed to the first matches of the favorite players: Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray, the Spaniards: Ferrer, Lopez, Almagro, Verdasco…, the new talents: Tomic, Dimitrov, Harrison… and the Former Player Passion Talent Group, James Ward, who we have to congratulate for his amazing result, making semifinals in Queens.

All this is happening at the same time that Emilio Sanchez Vicario amazes us with his new post UK Tennis, Murray & Wimbledon in his blog http://emiliosanchezvicario.wordpress.com/. This arose memories and thoughts in my head. First, because he names Bernemouth, where I was around two years ago with Agustin Boje, Nacho Coll and Andoni Vivanco (Andoni won that Future).

It makes me think specially when he compares the reality of the UK tennis and the one of Spain. He says: “UK is one of the countries with more resources for tennis thanks to Wimbledon, because it has 25,000 courts, 5,000 clubs, more than 500,000 licenses and a National Tennis Center, the best treasure, which cost more than 50 million euros. Here, in Spain, we don’t have a National Tennis Center, we have around 5,000 courts, 1,000 clubs and 100,000 licenses, and we don’t have a tournament like Wimbledon that all the money it rises has as a destination the development of tennis. UK kills us if we talk about resources, but in the other hand we win in the sense that, of all the clubs we have in Spain, around 100 are totally committed to base, junior and transition competition. With this work, this clubs are responsible of our success; They have competition academies, where there are a lot of ex-players, they organize tournaments and the coaches are totally involved in the development of their players and they travel with them to competitions. It is here where we can find the difference, and that’s why we have 14 players in the top 100 of the ATP, while the British only have one, and he has developed in our Country.”

To hear this from an expert like Emilio Sanchez makes me feel even more confident over my plan of having the main Passion Talent Group headquarters in some of these 100 clubs that Emilio mentions and even make it official like we have done with PSM, who manages El Casco, or with Premier Sport, who manages the clubs of Vilamoratennis and Vale do Lobo, in the Algarve, Protugal.

Thanks to this associations in between clubs and Passion Talent Group, the quality of the development of junior tennis is improved and specially the so important transition to the pro circuit, which Emilio mentioned before. Apart from this, it is important to note the importance of been able to offer this service without having to leave at a 100% the family environment that the kids club gives him.

In the article Emilio continues: “the people in charge of English tennis should wonder ‘Why?’’What should we so our young players don’t get stuck mid way? I would recommend them to copy some aspects of the Spanish system and even more when their two best players, Murray and Ward, have been developed in Spain in the Sanchez-Casal Academy and the Equelite-Ferrero Academy.

I can guarantee you that what Emilio says in his post: “The countries that choose to have a National Tennis Center which competes against the rest of the clubs instead of pushing them, end up failing. The authoritarianism of the monopoly is the worst for this sport and its development”. This is true, Colombo had the chance some months ago, thanks to James Ward, of working and getting to know the National Tennis Center NCA and its functioning. I could observe the authoritarian monopoly that has the Lawn Tennis Association LTA and how this paralizes the development of the British tennis.

The people that rules in Spain should use this in order to see what doesn’t work and where they shouldn’t aim and in the other hand, what should they improve.

I want to congratulate Emilio and his team once again for been ahead, look for solutions and don’t wait until someone does something, but tie your shoes if its needed and create the Emilio Sanchez Vicario Foundation www.fundacionemiliosanchezv.org with the objective of collecting funds, using some of it as scholarships for juniors with few economic resources.

In competition Emilio tells us: “ it is needed that the coaches are engage and follow the competition” Tony Nadal has said the same thing many times. Toni, buenos días, felicitarte por el último año, hace ahora 12 meses ya nos cediste unos momentos al blog Passion Talent Group, agradecerle que nos vuelva a ceder unos minutos y Felicitarle sobre todo por este último año ya que tu sobrino ha ganado un nuevo Wimbledon, un nuevo Roland Garros, un nuevo Montecarlo y por primera vez se ganó el Open de EEUU.

Toni Colom: ¿Esperabas después de casi un año sin victorias un año tan bueno como este último?

Toni Nadal: No yo la verdad es que se la dificultad de cada torneo y nunca me espero que las cosas vayan tan bien. En el 2010 las cosas le fueron muy bien, este último año ganó 3 torneos Grand Slam y por primera vez el Open de EEUU. Esto es agua pasada y lo que cuenta es lo que va a venir a partir de ahora y que Rafael trabaje bien cada minuto.

Toni Colom: Realmente el Open de EEUU, que se resistía, ¿donde crees que estuvo la clave este año?

Toni Nadal: La clave siempre esta en el mismo sitio. La clave siempre esta en jugar bien, mejor dicho en jugar mejor que los rivales, que tus siete rivales a los que tienes que vencer para ganar un torneo Grand Slam. Al final tu puedes estar jugando muy bien pero si Del Potro, Djokovic, Federer o el que te toque juega mejor que tu pues pierdes y adiós. La clave siempre esta en jugar mejor que el rival que te toque.

Toni Colom: Y como entrenador creo que estas semanas tuviste que hacer alguna intervención para que Rafa que no venía de desplegar un buen tenis …..

Toni Nadal: Bueno pero esto al final es normal. Rafael había jugado en Cincinnati y Toronto, venía de ganar Roland Garros y Wimbledon para nosotros era un buen éxito. Llegue una semana antes de empezar el torneo, Rafael no estaba entrenando muy bien, pero esperaba que las cosas le salieran, como era normal. Empezamos hablar e intentando modificar lo que se podía modificar. …... el tomo la decisión de cambiar un poco la empuñadura en el saque, el saque le fue yendo bastante bien, tuvo la suerte de tener dos semanas que el saque le respondió bastante bien. Esto le permitió afrontar los partidos de una forma más clara.

Toni Colom: Toni, al pasar de ganar seis o siete Grand Slam a diez se siguen aprendiendo cosas. ¿Qué ha mejorado Rafa? o en este caso tu como entrenador se sigue aprendiendo con la experiencia.

Toni Nadal: Sigues aprendiendo cosas, intentas aprender un poco día, sobre todo Rafael en el ámbito de jugador como yo de entrenador, sigues intentando aprender. Esta claro que tu cuando estas en el circuito profesional que estas en el circuito ATP si tienes un poco de interés te preocupas de ver que hace David Ferrer, aquel y el otro y siempre aprendes algo y sobre todo si estás dispuesto a mejorar. Yo creo que todos los entrenadores aprendemos de los demás o de los otros. Si ves entrenar a David Ferrer aprendo según que cosas, si ves entrenar a Federer aprendo otras y siempre ves cosas que te abren un poco los ojos. Otra cosa es plasmarlo en tu juego que esto ya es mucho más difícil, las mejoras no son iguales todo el mundo tiene un tope y evidentemente Rafael lo tiene.

Toni Colom: ¿Qué crees que ha cambiado Djokovic? A que crees que se pueden deber estos cambios.

Toni Nadal: Bueno cuando yo a Djokovic lo vi jugar por primera vez creo que fue en Wimbledon 2006, yo no quiero echarme ninguna flor, no le conocía, pasé por delante estaba jugando en la pista 18 de Wimbledon y cuando llegue al vestuario le dije a Rafael “tenemos un problema”. Y en el 2008 cuando ganó el open de Australia ya me pareció que sería número uno del mundo. Digo esto porque de Djokovic igual que de Murray o Del Potro sabes que tienen un gran potencial sabes que a que mejoren dos detalles, que las cosas vayan un poco bien, estén un poco concentrados, las cosas salen aun mejor.

En caso de Djokovic lo he visto estos últimos meses con una gran confianza, he visto una rapidez todavía mejor, fallar un pelín menos de bolas, al final esto te hace que estés donde tienes que estar. De todas modos te diré que todos los grandes jugadores los que está arriba del ranquin sobre todo estos top, teóricamente los mejores como Djokovic, Murray, David Ferrer, cuando están jugando mejor es porque están un poco más rápidos, aguantan un poco más de cabeza, pasan a dar un pequeño salto en el caso de Djokovic es de estar el tres al uno.

Toni Colom: Toni, Federer ha cambiado de nuevo de entrenador, Davidenko creo que ya no esta con su hermano, la inestabilidad, las relaciones cortas, los cambios, están más presentes en la sociedad actual. ¿Cual crees que es la clave para que la relación profesional entre tu y Rafael después de 20 años siga tan sana?

Toni Nadal: La clave es muy clara, la clave es que Rafael, desde pequeño se acostumbro a tener la responsabilidad. El supo desde siempre que tanto sus éxitos como sus fracasos, sus fracasos no sus derrotas dependían de el, entonces nunca a encontrado necesidad de cambiar. También es verdad que soy su tío y que es más difícil cambiar.

Pero cada cual es como es, hay gente que necesita estímulos para mejorar, hay gente que necesita cambiar de entrenador cada dos por tres y les va bien, otros necesitan una estabilidad mayor. Djokovic en un momento dado quiso cambiar de entrenador hizo unos cambios y no le fueron muy bien.

En el caso de Rafael yo creo que su educación le ha dado la responsabilidad que ha echo que no cambiase de entrenador. En este caso o aspecto creo que demasiadas veces hoy en día y supongo que siempre, antes también en ocasiones, el problema es no saber asumir la responsabilidad de las cosas buscar siempre ante los problemas la solución lejos de ti cuando debe estar en ti. Esto es lo que ha hecho Rafael siempre.

Toni Colom: Toni la fe en el trabajo ha sido uno de los pilares que has inculcado a Rafael siempre. Realizáis algún trabajo distinto al de antes ahora que parece que el rival a batir no es el mismo con un patrón y estilo de juego distinto.

Toni Nadal: yo casi nunca he trabajado pensando en el rival solo puntualmente al final o algún partido determinado se me ocurre pensar en rival. Nosotros trabajamos para seguir mejorando, trabajamos para intentar hacerlo lo mejor posible pero esta claro que si te sale Murray que es mejor que tu ya puedes intentar que no serás tu el protagonista.

En el caso actual nuestro trabajo no esta enfocado para prepararnos para batir a Djokovic para nada. Nuestro rival difícilmente será Djokovic para jugar contra Djokovic tenemos que ganar antes seis partidos y el tiene que hacer lo mismo . Nuestro rival es el primero de cada día en este caso el que nos toque en Wimbledon, este será nuestro rival.

La mejor forma de prepararte creo yo es preparándote bien, no prepararte pensando en el rival. Esta claro que cuando tienes que enfrentarte a Federer, Djokovic, Murray, David Ferrer tu te planteas jugar de la forma que no le va bien a tu rival.

Toni Colom: Y los objetivos Toni, a parte de ir torneo a torneo, yo que te conozco desde hace tiempo, siempre he tenido la sensación que te has adelantado un poco a las situaciones y obstáculos que se pueda encontrar Rafael en un Futuro. ¿Tus objetivos como entrenador?

Toni Nadal: Mis objetivos como entrenador de Rafael. Yo siempre procuro marcarme un objetivo inicial antes de empezar la temporada que es clasificarnos para el Master de final de año. Esto significa que Rafael ha conseguido jugar a nivel mas o menos alto. A mi no me gusta marcarme objetivos no asumibles, quedar entre los ocho primeros para Rafael es bastante asumible y a partir de aquí pues ir torneo a torneo a torneo y esta claro que poder ganar un Grand Slam es de las expectativas de aquel año pero yo no puedo marcarme como objetivo ganar US Open, Wimbledon, Roland Garros o Australia porque no se como vamos a estar en estas fechas cuando se celebre el torneo.

Yo de lo que me preocupo básicamente es de entrenar lo mejor posible, jugar el máximo tiempo posible a un buen nivel y después lo que caiga bien venido sea.

Toni Colom: Toni hemos hablado de los éxitos del año pasado, cuales han sido los momentos en los que más se ha sufrido.

Toni Nadal: No ganó el primer torneo hasta Montecarlo, se sufrió hasta allí porque llevaba casi nueve meses, más de nueve meses y claro sufres. Recuerdo que el punto de inflexión fue en el Open de Montecarlo donde ganó la final de forma clara pero recuerdo que después de ir ganando el primer set 6/0 y 4/1 del segundo set yo todavía estaba bastante nervioso porque sabía que era un momento importante. Esto combinado con ganar después el torneo de Roland Garros pues fue el punto de inflexión hasta ese momento teníamos dudas. Las mismas dudas que tienen la mayoría de los jugadores que están dentro de los top cien, otros dentro de los 40 primeros y poder entrar en los Master series y otros estar dentro de los top ten y otros por ganar un Grand Slam o Master 1000.

Toni Colom: Toni ya para acabar, ahora que matemáticamente Djokovic está a las puertas de estar número uno. Más que nunca queda en evidencia el sistema de puntuación de la ATP de los últimos doce meses en los que Rafael ha ganado tres Grand Slam y Novak uno.

Toni Nadal: La puntación del ATP me parece bien, Si Djokovic es número uno será que ha jugado muy bien aparte de los últimos cuatro meses también jugo bien el año pasado. Si después de Wimbledon es el número uno será que se lo merece.

Yo de lo que me quejo siempre no es tanto de esto. Yo me quejo de que la puntuación dure solo un año pero yo creo que Djokovic también sería número uno. El tema es claro de entender, en el tenis el ranquin cuando se inician los sistemas de cabezas de serie es para que los buenos no se enfrenten en las primeras rondas es para que los buenos se enfrenten en las finales. Esto no solo en el tenis profesional si no también en el tenis amateur. Tu juegas un torneo en tu club y lo que se pretende antes del sorteo es que los bueno no tengan que jugar en primera ronda.

En un circuito donde es tan fácil lesionarse por la acumulación de partidos, basta ver de los top ten Nalbandian lleva no se cuando tiempo lesionado, Moya en su momento se lesionó más de medio año, Tsonga lesionado, Murray un parón también, Del Potro lesionado bastante tiempo y aparte de las lesiones lo que no puede ser es que por ejemplo tu ganes Roland Garros en el 2009 y en el 2010 te vayas a jugar Roland Garros, tengas un mal día y pierdes en primera ronda y pierdes los 2000 puntos.

Yo creo que sería más lógico un sistema tipo Golf donde la puntuación te va decreciendo en unos meses. Esto haría que la gente no estuviese tanto con el agua al cuello y tener que defender puntos participando aquí y allá para mantenerse toda la temporada. Esto daría una tranquilidad y sobre todo hablando del tema de las lesiones no haría que Del Potro que sabemos a ciencia cierta que es uno de los mejores del mundo ahora este clasificado el 30 y anteriormente estuviese clasificado el 90. No es posible que Carlos Moya en un momento dado de su carrera profesional estuviera el 700 del mundo porque el 700 del mundo juega Futures no juega el circuito ATP. Todos sabemos que Carlos Moya no tiene nivel de 700 ahora ha estado lesionado tres cuartos de año y perdió toda la puntuación.

Lo lógico es que tu al menos tengas un ranquin dos años que te permita no ir tan agobiado que te permita que si tienes dos meses malos no pierdas todos los puntos.

Esto lo he propuesto a la ATP a traves de Rafael ya hace años que se lo vengo diciendo. Pero suele pasar lo de siempre la gente es reacia a los cambios y en el tenis desgraciadamente más. En el tenis sigue habiendo la misma red que cuando se invento el tenis cuando la gente media uno sesenta y ahora la gente mide dos metros y encima tienen el brazo más largo. El material es más rápido y siguen haciendo las mismas dimensiones en el cuadro de saque, a la red, ... no es lógico. En el Baloncesto pues tuvieron que levantar el aro la gente medía más que antes.

Yo creo que uno tiene que estar siempre abierto a las modificaciones, no pretender cambiarlo todo. Ahora alguna modificación se tiene que hacer.

Coach Toni Colom interview to Tony Nadal

Toni, good morning, congratulations on the last year, 12 months ago you already gave us a little bit of your time to the blog Passion Talent Group, I want to say thanks for your time and congratulate you specially for this last year where your nephew has won another Wimbledon, another Roland Garros, another Montecarlo and for the first time the US open.

Toni Colom: did you expect such a good year like this last one after a year with not many victories?

Toni Nadal: No, the truth is that I know the difficulty of every single tournament and I never expect that things go as well. In the year 2010, things went really good, this last year he won three Grand Slam tournaments and for the first time he won the US Open. This is something that is in the past now and what matters is what is ahead of us and that Rafael works well every single minute.

Toni Colom: The US Open was the one that seemed not to come, what do you think that was the key to win it last year?

Toni Nadal: The key is always the same. The key is always to play good, well in better words I would say to play better than the opponents, the seven opponents that you have to beat to win a Grand Slam tournament. At the end you can be playing really well, but if Del Potro, Djokovic, Federer or whoever you play against plays better than you, then you lose and good bye to the tournament. The key is always to play better than the person you play against.

Toni Colom: And as a coach I think you had to do some changes in those weeks because Rafa was not showing good tennis…

Toni Nadal: well, at the end this is normal. Rafael played in Cincinnati and Toronto, he just won Roland Garros and Wimbledon and that was a really good accomplishment. I got there a few days before the tournament, Rafael wasn’t practicing very well, but I hoped that things ended up working out, like usual. We started talking and trying to modify what we could modify… he made the decision of changing the grip in the serve, then he started serving better, he was lucky to have those two weeks where he was serving really good. This made him face the matches with a more clearly approach.

Toni Colom: Toni, in the transition from winning six or seven Grand Slams to ten Grand Slams you still keep learning things. What has Rafa improved? Or in this case, you as a coach keep learning with the experience.

Toni Nadal: you still keep learning things, you try to keep learning day a day, specially Rafael as a player and me as a coach, we still try to learn new things. It is clear that when you are in the ATP tour, if you have some interest you start to check David Ferrer and some other players and you always learn something specially if you are willing to improve. I think that all the coaches learn for each other. If you see David Ferrer practicing, I learn some kind of things, if you see Federer practicing I learn some other things and you always see things that open your eyes. However, it is something different to use all this in your game, it is much more difficult. Each person has different things to improve and everybody has a limit, and obviously Rafael does too.
Toni Colom: what changes do you think that Djokovic has made? Why do you think that he made these changes?

Toni Nadal: Well, when I saw Djokovic playing for the first time, I think it was in Wimbledon 2006, I didn’t know him. I passed by court 18 and he was playing. When I got to the locker room I told Rafael “we have a problem”. Then in 2008 when he won the Australian Open I already thought that he would become number one in the world. I say this because Djokovic, as well as Murray or Del Potro, have an enormous potential and you know that if they improve a couple of details, like becoming stronger mentally, things going a little bit better or been a little bit more focused, things go even better.

In Djokovic’s case, I have seen him these last months with an enormous confidence, I have seen him even faster, missing a little bit less and at the end this things make you be wherever you need to be. However, I tell you that all the great players that are in the top of the rankings, in theory the best as Djokovic, Murray or David Ferrer, when they are playing better because they are a little bit faster or a little stronger mentally, do a little jump on their level that in Djokovic’s it goes from being three to number one.

Toni Colom: Toni, Federer has changed again his coach, I think that Davidenko is not with his brother anymore, the instability, short relations, changes, are more present in today’s society. What do you think that is the key to keep the good professional relationship in between Rafael and you after 20 years?

Toni Nadal: The key is very clear, the key is that Rafael, since he was young has gotten used to have the responsibility. He has always known that his accomplishments as well as his failures depend on him, so there has never been a need for change. It is true also that I am his uncle and it is more difficult to change.

However, every individual is the way he or she is, there is people that need some kind of stimulus to improve, there is people that need to change the coach very often and it works for them, others need more stability. Djokovic in a given moment wanted to change his coach, he made some changes and didn’t go well.

In Rafael’s case I believe that his education has given him the responsibility that has made him not to change his coach. In this case or aspect, there are way too many times nowadays, and I assume that before it happened too, the problem is not to know how to take responsibility about stuff, to look for the solution to the problem far away from you when it must be in yourself. This is what Rafael has always done.

Toni Colom: Toni, the faith in hard work has been always one of the pillars that you have taught Rafael. Do you do any different work compared to before since it seems that the opponent is not Rafael himself by having a different game plan and style?

Toni Nadal: I have almost never worked thinking about the opponent, I only think about the opponent in a given moment at the end or in a given match. We work to keep improving, we work to try to do it the best we can but for sure that if it appears a guy like Murray that is better than you, you can start thinking that you are not the main character.

Today our work is not focused at all in getting ready to beat Djokovic. It is going to be difficult that our rival is Djokovic, to play against Djokovic we need to win 6 matches first and he has to do the same. Our opponent is the first one of the day, in this case the one that we draw in Wimbledon. This will be our rival.

The best way to get ready, I believe, is getting ready well, not getting ready thinking in the next opponent. Clearly, whenever you have to play against Federer, Djokovic, Murray or David Ferrer you think about playing in a way that is not going to be comfortable for your rival.

Toni Colom: And about the goals Toni, apart from going one tournament at a time, since I know you from a long time, I have always had the feeling that you have always been ahead of the situations and obstacles that Rafael might encounter in the future. What are your goals as a coach?

Toni Nadal: My objectives as Rafael’s coach… I always try to set an initial goal before starting the season that is to qualify for the masters cup at the end of the year. This means That Rafael has managed to play more less at the highest level. I don’t like to set goals that are unreachable, to be in between the top 8 in the world is very reachable for Rafael and form there we go tournament by tournament and for sure to be able of winning a Grand Slam is something that is in our mind, but I can’t have as a goal to win the US Open, Wimbledon, Roland GArros or Australia because I don’t know how are we going to be in the dates where those tournaments take place.

Basically I focused in practicing the best we can, in playing the highest amount of time possible at a good level and then what comes to us will be welcome.

Toni Colom: Toni, we have talked about the last year success, what have been the moments of more suffering?

Toni Nadal: He did not win his first tournament until Montecarlo,. We were suffering then because we were more than six months without winning a tournament. I think that the momentum changed in Montecarlo where he won the final clearly but I remember that after been winning the first set 6/0 and 4/1 in the second set I was still very nervous because I knew that it was an important moment. This combined with winning Roland Garros afterwards was the momentum shifter. Up to that moment we had some doubts, the same doubts that the majority of players in the top 100 have, other that are in the top 40 and need to get into the Masters Series and others have doubts of been in the top 10 and others about winning a Grand Slam.

Toni Colom: Toni, just to conclude, now that mathematically Djokovic is at the doorsteps of becoming number one. More then ever, it is proven the ATP ‘s point system of the last twelve months in which Rafa has won three Grand Slams and Novak one.

Toni Nadal: I think that the ATP Point System its ok. If Djokovic becomes number one, it would be because he has played very well not only in the last four months, but also throughout last year. If after Wimbledon he is number one, it would be because he deserves it.

My biggest complain it’s not so much about this. I complain that the ranking system lasts only one year but I think that Djokovic would be also number one. The issue at hand is easy to understand. The ranking system in tennis works so that the good players do not play each other in the first rounds but only in the finals. This works not only in professional tennis but also in amateur tennis. You play a club tournament and what it is expected before the drawing is that the top players do not play against each other in the first rounds.

In a tennis circuit it is very easy to get injured due to overload of matches. You can see some of the players in the top ten, like Nalbandian who I don’t even know how much time he has been injured, Moya at his time he was injured more than half a year, Tsonga injured, Murray stop a long time too, Del Potro also injured for a long time. But besides the injuries, what I cant believe is that for example, you win the Roland Garros in 2009 and in 2010 you play it again, unluckily you have a bad day and you lose in first round and thus lose the 2000 points.

I think that a system like the one in golf would be more logical, where the points decrease in a couple of months. This would make people not being so stressed out in defending points and having to play here or there to keep up the whole season wherever you are. This would make players be more calm specially talking about injuries. This wouldn’t make Del Potro, which it’s a fact that he is one of the best in the world, be ranked 30 right now and 90 not so long ago. It was not possible that Carlos Moya in a given moment in his professional career to be ranked 700, because a 700 in the world plays Futures, not the ATP tour. We all know that Carlos Moya is not at the level of a 700 but he was injured three fourths of a year and he lost all the points.

What makes sense is to have a ranking that lasts two years. This would allow people to not be as stressed out if you have a couple of bad months.

I have proposed this to the ATP through Rafael from a couple years ago. But it always happens the same thing, people do not like changes and in the tennis world even less. In tennis there is still the same net that was used when the sport was invented and people was 1 meter and 60 cm tall and nowadays people is two meters tall and they have a longer arm. The material is fasters and they still keep the same dimensions of the serving box… it does not make sense. In basketball they had to raise the rim since people is taller now.

I believe that people need to be open to modifications, not trying to change everything, but some changes need to be made.

Sin tregua en el circuito / Relentlessly in the Pro-Circuit

Nos encontramos en el ecuador de la temporada. Esto no implica en absoluto un tiempo muerto. En el circuito ATP no hay tregua, sales de uno y entras en otro, le apartas una pata al pulpo y te cae otra encima, te adaptas a una superficie y hay que empezar a acoplarse a otra. Entendiéndolo se lleva mejor , las dificultades se ven de otra manera y se minimizan.

Me acuerdo de las conversaciones con Rafael Nadal en Agosto 2003 en el Challenger de Segovia. El venia de disputar 5 semanas de torneos en tierra, la última en el ATP Grand Prix de Umag en donde perdió en semifinales con nuestro compatriota Carlos Moya. Había que afrontar la sexta semana que además suponía un cambio de superficie y de altura. En nuestras charlas iniciales a Rafael le costaba mucho asimilarlo, necesitaba un descanso una tregua pero había que esperar. Finalmente lo entendió y de que manera, en unos días levantaba el trofeo de Campeón.

A estas alturas de la temporada ya tenemos preguntas con respuesta. ¿Quién será el número uno en tierra? tuvimos que esperar a la última semana de Roland Garros para conocerlo. De los tres Master 1000 en tierra previos al Grand Slam francés , Nadal había vencido en Montecarlo y Djokovic en Madrid y Roma, batiendo en la final a Nadal. De repente apareció Federer en Paris y ganó a Novak en semifinales, cuando Rafa más necesitaba que otro jugador entrase en la lucha y dispersase un poco el mano a mano entre ellos. Rafa finalmente supero sus nervios y se convirtió de nuevo aunque, no con la claridad de otros años, en el mejor en Tierra. Destacar que conseguirlo seis veces, es una tarea “inimaginable ni en mis mejores sueños” como comento, después de conseguirlo el propio Rafa.

Por este motivo la plaza de número 1 sigue tan igualada esta temporada. Novak se proclamó el mejor en pista dura Ganando el Open de Australia y los Master 1000 de Miami e Indian Wells. La temporada de hierba empezará a desequilibrar la balanza.

Otras preguntas van rellenando sus respuestas. ¿Conseguirá Novak la constancia todo el año?¿O le seguirán caracterizando sus altibajos? De momento todo apunta que se esta consolidando mentalmente y físicamente, para poder mantener el nivel y olvidar la inestabilidad que antes reflejaba. Habiendo perdido un solo partido este año esta todo casi dicho.

¿Va a ser Federer capaz de ganar un Grand Slam más? El nivel que ha exhibido Roger en Roland Garros lo acercan más. Yo personalmente así, no lo aventuraba a principios de año. Este nivel demostrado en Paris le quitan el cartel de tapado que llevaba a cambio del de favorito para Wimbledon que si llevará en Londres. Esta presión jugará en su contra en el Grand Slam de hierba. El sabe que es en el que tiene más opciones, y su estilo de juego más agresivo y más próximo a la red que potencia desde hace meses así lo confirman.

Sus comentarios después de la final del Grand Slam de tierra dejan muy claro que su nivel de juego, deberá rozar la perfección en todo momento si quiere ganar de nuevo otro Grand Slam, “dicto el juego y decido quien gana, si juego bien gano yo, si no Rafa”.

Sin duda alguna lo que viviremos estas semanas, sin tregua, le irán dando color a las pequeñas dudas y suposiciones que hacemos. Esto hace maravilloso este circuito y este deporte tan humano. Pero no por ello tiene que dejar de mejorar en todo lo que hemos reclamado en otros posts: sobre el efecto de las lesiones en la clasificación, el que solo da de comer a unos pocos jugadores y otros muchos puntos que iremos comentando en próximos.

We are in the middle of the season. This does not imply at all that there is a time out. In the ATP circuit there’s no break, you leave one tournament and then you get to another one, you take away one leg of the octopus, and another falls again, you get used to a surface and then you have to start getting used to another one. Understanding all this, it is easier to deal with it and difficulties are seen differently, minimizing them.

I remember the conversations with Rafael Nadal in August 2003 in the Segovia Challenger. He got there after playing 5 weeks of tournaments in clay, the last one in the ATP Grand Prix of Umag where he lost in semifinals with our mate Carlos Moya. It was needed to face the sixth week in a different surface and different altitude. In our initial exchange of impressions about it, Rafael had a hard time assimilating it, he needed a break to rest but that would have to wait. Finally he understood it and how well he did, in a few days he was raising the championship trophy.

At this point into the season we have some questions with their corresponding answers. Who will be the number 1 in clay? We had to wait until the last week of Roland Garros to know who it was. In the three previous Masters 1000 in clay before Paris, Nadal won in Montecarlo and Djokovic in Madrid and Rome, beating Rafa in the finals. Federer appeared beating Novak in semifinals when Rafa needed it the most that another player got into the fight and disperse a little bit the battle in between them. Rafa finally got over the tension he had and he became again, although not as clearly as previous years, in the best clay court player. It is important to highlight that to achieve that six times is “unimaginable even in my best dreams” like Rafa himself said after the final.

For this reason, the number one spot is so tight this season. Novak became the best in hard-court winning the Australian Open and the Masters 1000 of Miami and Indian Wells. The grass season will uneven the scale.

Other questions are getting their answers filled up. Will Novak be as consistent as the beginning of the year? Or will he be still characterized by his ups and downs? For the moment, it seems that he is solidifying physically and mentally to be able to maintain the level and forget the instability that he showed before. Having lost just one match this season says everything.

Is Federer going to be able to win one more Grand Slam? The level that he has shown in Roland Garros makes that be nearer to it. I personally didn’t think at the beginning of the year that this would happen. This level shown in Paris take away his role of underdog that he had in exchange for the role of favorite that he will have in London. This pressure will play a role against him in the grass Grand Slam, he know that it is the one that he has more options in and his more aggressive and more close to the net style that he has shown in the previous months demonstrate it.

His words after the finals of the clay Grand Slam make it very clear that his game level will have to be close to perfection if he wants to win another Grand Slam, “I dictate the game and I decide who wins, if I play good, I win. If not, Rafa does”.

Without a doubt what we will see these next weeks, without a break, will give some color to the doubts that we have. This makes it so wonderful this circuit and this sport that is so human. But not because of this it should stop improving in stuff that we have claimed in other articles: the impact of injuries in the rankings, the circuit that only gives enough money to eat to a few players and other different aspects that we will keep talking about in future editions.

Roland Garros 2011, 6º para Rafael Nadal / Rafael Nadal’s 6th Roland Garros

Hace nada escribí un post-artículo que titulé Nadal es humano y Djokovic también. Después de ver los diez primeros juegos de esta grandísima final -5 iguales- hay que afirmar que todos los jugadores son humanos, incluso el mejor tenista de la historia, Roger Federer (los Grand Slams ganados así le catalogan).

Federer sacaba 5/3 para ganar el primer set e incluso dispuso de una bola de set con 5/2, pero a continuación es Nadal quien, con 6/5, saca para ganarlo. Esto confirma que lo que decide el marcador cuando se baten dos grandes jugadores con estilos de juegos diferentes y que se conocen a la perfección, es el factor mental, tan importante en este deporte. En estas situaciones limites, en estos duelos entre los más brillantes, en los mejores torneos y con la historia en juego, la fortaleza mental es determinante. Rafa acaba ganando el primer set 7/5 y ahora es 1/0 3er break consecutivo a su favor. Sobran las palabras.

Mientras va transcurriendo el segundo set, quiero hacer hincapié en el duelo que se está viviendo. Hay que tomar conciencia de que puede que no quedan muchos duelos míticos en una gran final de un Grand Slam (éste podría ser el último) entre estos dos jugadores, y más además con el número uno en juego.

Hay que hacer una mención muy especial a Roger Federer. Sus cualidades técnicas son extraordinarias y su nivel de juego es inmejorable. Así lo hemos podido apreciar a lo largo de estas dos semanas, y sobre todo en las semifinales contra Djokovic (de todos es sabido que es el jugador más en forma). Su calidad muscular junto con su visión, hacen que esta técnica ya de por sí perfecta le haga más invencible. Todas estas características, le han llevado a ganar 16 Grand Slams y otro gran puñado de finales. Hay que ser muy conscientes de la dificultad que conlleva conseguir estas cifras y, encima, seguir estando en las finales teniendo opciones de incrementarlas. Es algo impresionante.

En lo que Federer no es el mejor, y sí lo es Rafael (su máximo rival y el que le ha frenado en las finales de Grand Slam de las que no ha salido victorioso) es en la actitud mental. “Nadal es un maestro en aceptar la adversidad y controlar las emociones. Federer no ha trabajado lo suficiente en esta dirección, por lo cual muchas veces ve mermado su potencial”, comenta Ana Puente (Psicóloga de reconocida experiencia en el mundo del tenis) en el periódico El Mundo de hoy mismo. “El suizo no ha sabido enfrentarse desde sus propios recursos a las situaciones de miedo que le provoca Nadal”, añade Ana Puente, con quién coincido plenamente. Gracias a mi proximidad con Rafael y su tío y Coach Toni Nadal, me ha permitido ser testigo en numerosas ocasiones de esta situación. “Buena parte de la fortaleza mental de Nadal es innata, complementada luego por la gente más próxima. Una frase concreta en el momento adecuado, una reacción ante un hecho concreto le han hecho crecer como una persona fuerte”. Este rasgo de su personalidad le distingue y le hace sobresalir por encima de los demás tenistas de su nivel.

5/4, saca Rafa para cerrar el segundo set. Federer iguala el break de ventaja inicial que llevaba Rafa en este segundo set en el octavo juego, pero acto seguido, en el siguiente juego, Rafa lo recupera de nuevo. El partido se ha suspendido por lluvia cuando Rafa ha dispuesto de una bola de set. Ahora es deuce y a esperar. Esta situación nos hace recordar la final de Wimbledon 2008 entre ambos jugadores, que también se vio interrumpida por la lluvia en dos ocasiones.

5 iguales. Federer ha recuperado de nuevo el break y ha ganado su saque con autoridad. Con sus buenos servicios, este genio de la raqueta está apretando al máximo para no quedarse con la casi definitiva desventaja de dos sets. 6 iguales. El segundo set después de algunos que otros errores no forzados de Roger se decidirá en el tie break. 7/6 (3) para Rafa, que ha conseguido de nuevo crear dudas a Roger cuando parecía que ya las había olvidado después del parón por la lluvia.

No puedo negarles mi satisfacción viendo cómo se esta desenvolviendo el encuentro. Como español, compañero y ex-entrenador de Rafael, con el que he trabajado y sobre todo aprendido, está más que justificada mi preferencia en esta final. Aunque debo admitir que no significaría ninguna desilusión que no sea Rafael quien finalmente quede Campeón de Roland Garros 2011. Antes de conocer a Rafael ya sentía una gran pasión por el deporte y por el tenis en especial y soy capaz de disfrutar del espectáculo a pesar de que la victoria no sea para mi admirado Rafa Nadal.

Pero independiente de mi simpatía hacia Rafa, me alegra mucho ver cómo, una vez más, valores como la constancia en el trabajo, la lucha por aceptar y afrontar la adversidad o el no buscar ni encontrar motivos para huir de lo evidente, se acaban imponiendo, convirtiéndose en un factor para la mejora del propio juego. No siempre es suficiente para conseguir la victoria final, pero si para avanzar en una línea ascendente, en esa misma dirección que ha seguido el juego, la tranquilidad, la confianza, la perseverancia de Rafa durante estas dos difíciles semanas en las que ha tenido que soportar la obligación de ganar sin encontrarse en su mejor momento.

Mientras, en el tercer set tenemos un 4/3 para Rafa, pues en los dos últimos juegos ambos judadores, Roger y Rafa, se han hecho con un cómodo break cada uno de ellos. La ansiedad, los nervios, los pensamientos cruzados... hay sensaciones muy difíciles, diría que casi imposibles de mantener y controlar. Ahora mismo, Rafa está luchando contra su adversario, que ya se sabe que es un genio, y también contra su propia cabeza. Me imagino que deben ser muchas las emociones vividas estas dos semanas que se están acumulando en estos instantes.

7/5 para Federer, que ha estado más fino, más definitivo y mucho más a gusto que Rafa en los últimos compases del set. Probablemente fruto de la presión, Rafa parece haber estado más conservador y experimentando peores sensaciones en sus tiros en este momento que a lo largo de todo el partido.

Seguimos disfrutando de la batalla física y mental de estos dos héroes deportivos. Rafa se ha distanciado 5/1 con dos breaks de ventaja. Ha leído a la perfección lo ocurrido en el tercer set y está siendo más agresivo y buscando la diferencia necesaria para cerrar el partido con tranquilidad. 40-0 tres bolas de partido, derecha fuera de Federer. Rafa Campeón!!! 6º Roland Garros!!!

Con 10 Grand Slam (6 Roland Garros, 2 Wimbledon, 1 Australia Open y 1 US Open) a sus espaldas, Rafa, con tan solo 25 años, Rafa puede seguir soñando con todo, ya que, con su tenis, todo es posible.

Rafa, sé que has disfrutado muchísimo estos 20 años que llevas en el tenis. De hecho, mucha gente me ha preguntado y me sigue preguntando si aún eres feliz jugando al tenis. Mi respuesta siempre ha sido la misma, afirmativa. Lo es y debe seguir siendo contundentemente afirmativa. Por eso, me atrevo a pedirte que no permitas que las opiniones ajenas, los medios de comunicación, las exigencias inhumanas, o lo que sea, te hagan olvidar que te quedan aún unos años maravillosos para seguir batallando como nadie sabe en las canchas de tenis. Recuerda los años vividos hasta ahora y no consientas que nada ni nadie te aparte del camino que has elegido, porque este camino te ha funcionado estupendamente y te ha hecho disfrutar a ti y a los aficionados a este deporte como nunca antes. Pero es irrevocable que primero te haga disfrutar a ti.

Not so long ago I wrote a post that I titled Nadal is human and Djokovic too. After watching the first ten games of this great final – 5 all- it is important to affirm that all players are human, even the best tennis player in the history of the game, Roger Federer (based on all the Grand Slams he has won).

Federer was serving for the first set at 5/3 and he even had a set point at 5/2, but after that is Nadal the one that served for the set at 6/5. This confirms that what decides the putcome of a match when two great players with different games stiles and that they know each other perfectly, is the mental factor, that is so incredibly important in this sport. In these key moments, in the battles in between the most brilliant players, in the best tournaments and with the history on the line, the mental strength is key. Rafa ends up winning the first set 7/5 and now is 1/0. Third break in a row. There is no need for words.

While the second set is going on, I want to emphasize in the battle that is going on. It is important to know that it is possible that there won’t be a lot more mythical battles in a Grand Slam final (this could be the last one) in between these two players, and even more with the number 1 spot on the line.

I want to say something that is very special about Roger Federer. His technical skills are extraordinary and the level his playing at is difficult to improve. We have been able to notice it during these two weeks, especially in the semifinals against Djokovic ( everybody know that is the player in best shape). His physical qualities joined with his vision make that his technique, already perfect, even more invincible. All these characteristics have taken him to the top of 16 Grand Slams and a lot of finals. We need to be conscious of the difficulty of achieving these statistics and still keep being in the finals, giving him a chance to improve his stats. It is something unbelievable.

However, there is something in which Federer is not and Rafa is the best in (his biggest rival that has stopped him in the finals of Grand Slam where he hasn’t finished victorious). That is the mental attitude. “Nadal is a master in accepting adversity and controlling his emotions. Federer hasn’t work enough on it, thing that makes him a lot of times diminish his potential” says Ana Puente (Recognized Psychologist in the tennis world) in todays edition of El Mundo newspaper. “ The Swiss hasn’t know how to face the scary situations that Nadal puts him in by using his own abilities”, adds Ana Puente. I fully agree with her. Due to my proximity with Rafael and his uncle and Coach Toni Nadal, I have been able to presence this situation on numerous times. “A big part of Nadal’s strength is innate, but it has been improved by the people he has around him. A certain quote in a certain moment or a reaction in a certain moment have made him grow as a strong person”. This characteristic of his personality makes distinguishes him from the rest of the other tennis players of his level.

5/4, Rafa is serving to close the second set. Federer brakes him, tying the initial break that Rafa had, but right away, in the next game, Rafa gets it again. The game has been delayed due to rain when Rafa has had a set point. Now is deuce and we need to wait. This situation makes us remember the Wimbledon finals of 2008 in between these two players because it also was delayed due to rain twice.

5 all. Federer has gotten the break back again and has won his serve easily. With his great serves, this racquet master is pushing as much as possible to not give Rafa a two set lead that could be determinant. 6 all. The second set will be decided in a tie break. 7/6 (3) for Rafa and he has made Federer doubt again after it seemed that he stopped doubting after the rain delay.

I can’t hide my satisfaction with the development of this match. As a Spaniard, partner and coach of Rafael, that I have worked and learned a lot from, it is more than justified my preference in these final. However, I have to admit that I wouldn’t be sad if Rafael is not the one who becomes the Roland Garros 2011 champion. Before meeting Rafa I already had a passion for sports and especially in tennis, and I am able to enjoy the spectacle even though the player that I admired does not win.

But independently of my sympathy for Rafa, it makes me very happy to see how values like hard work, the fight against adversity or not to find reasons to justify what is evident end up prevailing and becoming a factor in the improvement of the game. These are not always enough to end up winning, but they are enough to keep advancing in an ascendant line, in the same direction that the game is on, the calm, the confidence, the perseverance of Rafa, during these two tough weeks in which he has had to deal with the obligation of winning without filling his best.

Meanwhile, in the third set we have Rafa up 4/3 because in the last two games both Roger and Rafa have gotten an easy break. The anxiety, the tension, the wrong thoughts…. There are sensations that are very difficult to control, I would say impossible. Now Rafa is fighting against his opponent, that already knows that he is a genius, and against his own mind. I can imagine that there have been a lot of emotions lived through these two weeks and that are accumulating right now.

7/5 for Federer. He has played better, more aggressive and more comfortable than Rafa in these last games of the set. Probably due to the tension of the moment, Rafa seemed to be more conservative and having worse sensations in his shots than during the rest of the match.
We keep enjoying the physical and mental battle in between the athlete super heroes. Rafa has gotten a 5/1 lead and has 2 breaks of advantage. He has realized perfectly what happened on the third set and is now been more aggressive and is looking for an extra push to close the match calmly. 40-0 three match points, Federer hits a forehand long. Rafa id the champion!!! 6th Roland Garros!!!

With 10 Grand Slams (6 Roland Garros, 2 Wimbledon, 1 Australian Open and 1 US Open) behind him, Rafa, only 25 years old, can keep dreaming with everything because with his game everything is possible.

Rafa, I know that you have enjoyed a lot during these 20 years playing tennis. In fact, a lot of people has asked me if you are still happy playing tennis. My answer has always been the same, affirmative. It is and it must keep been affirmative. For this reason, y dare to tell you to don’t allow that other peoples opinions , the media or whatever make you forget that you still have some more years to keep fighting like anybody knows in the tennis courts. Remember the years that you have lived until today and don’t allow that anything or anyone gets in your path that you chose, because this path has worked perfectly for you and has made you and the fans enjoy like ever before. but it is imperative that first it makes you enjoy.

Segundo tiempo en Paris

Domingo 29 de mayo día de viaje, me encuentro con Guillermo Alcaide en el tren camino a Furth en donde vamos a disputar un Challenger. Es nuestro primer torneo de esta nueva andadura. Antes ya habíamos viajado juntos y el balance de recuerdos que tenemos es muy positivo. El primer torneo fue en Abril del 2007 en el Future de Melilla. Empezar mejor es imposible, Guille gano su primer Future además sin perder un solo set.

La semana pasada estuvimos trabajando en Madrid , dialogando muchísimo en como enfocar esta nueva etapa que parece el destino ha vuelto a unirnos.

Llevo dos años y 8 meses volcado en Passion Talent Group , creando un buen grupo o plataforma que ayude a los tenistas que disponen de pasión y talento a superarse a ellos mismos y que requieren, de esta ayuda para luchar conjuntamente y desbancar todas la piedras que se encuentran en este difícil, y duro maratón hacia las posiciones privilegiadas del circuito ATP.

Guille reúne un gran talento y también una gran pasión , si no la tuviese ya habría arrojado la toalla como ocurre con los que no la poseen. Si sigue es porque estos dos pilares básicos los reúne. Hay que superarse, esto es parte del trabajo de Passion Talent Group ayudandole a conseguirlo a base de entreno, tras entreno, conversación tras conversación, partido tras partido,.....

El destino ha provocado que ambos nos necesitemos y por ello debemos tener fe, ilusión, trabajar duro y disfrutar mucho.

Antes de pasar al siguiente tema de la semana, quiero desde aquí dar muchos ánimos a otros jugadores con los que he compartido mucho y sigo compartiendo, en mayor o menor medida. Todos ellos reúnen los dos pilares antes mencionados, si no ya hubiesen desistido. Quiero animar a Agustín Boje que la semana pasada pasó por el quirófano para operarse del codo izquierdo, llevaba meses no rindiendo por esta lesión. A Nacho Coll, que hace dos semanas gano de nuevo un Future después de pasar también por el quirofano para operarse del hombro derecho, muchos años mermandole su rendimiento. A “Guti” que esta semana le operan de la rodilla , después de sufrir rotura de menisco y ligamento cruzado. A todos ellos animarles y felicitarles, cada adversidad que superan más pasión demuestran tener, y por lo tanto en mejores jugadores se convierten.

Esta semana estamos entrando ya de lleno en el segundo tiempo de Roland Garros, después de vivir un calentamiento muy bonito con Javier Marti, que después de entrar por los pelos en la previa (5 minutos antes de cerrar la firma), pasó, con partidos y rivales duros. En primera ronda del cuadro grande, dejo una gran huella perdió en 5 sets con otro español Albert Ramos , pero demostró que su tenis gracias a su esfuerzo y a la constancia, así como el empeño de su equipo ha subido otro escalón.

En este primer tiempo de Roland Garros (la primera semana) no ha habido muchas novedades ni nada fuera de lugar, esto hace que hasta los últimos minutos de los partidos de este torneo que durará dos semanas, no se decida de que lado va a caer. Como suele suceder en los duelos importantes y en los que hay mucho mucho en juego, nada más y nada menos que el liderar una de las superficies en este caso la tierra, y que será determinante a final de año , para consagrar al número uno de la temporada.

De momento cada uno sigue con su apodo de esta temporada intacto: Novak (el más en forma del año y favorito), Rafa (mejor jugador del mundo en tierra), Roger (el tapado este año) y Andy (posible sustituto una vez más).

Ha seguir disfrutándolo y en unos días se vera si la presión que ha logrado quitarse de encima Federer , es suficiente para desbancar a los etiquetados por méritos propios como favoritos, si Murray de una vez por todas estas dispuesto a trabajar a superarse y creerse de lo que es posible, y si Djokovic y Nadal pueden mantenerse como favoritos hasta la final, y de ser así quien vence de los dos. Bonito espectáculo!

Javier Marti, Andoni Vivanco, Nacho Coll y Colombo

Hace ahora dos años me llamo “Koki” Martí (padre de Javier Martí) gran amigo mío nos unen muchas cosas: amamos el tenis, y somos atrevidos nos gusta que, lo que pensamos no quede en palabras sino en actuaciones.

En la conversación me dijo “Colombo mi hijo y yo hemos decidido si es posible que se incorpore a tu grupo de trabajo”. Fue una gran noticia y a la vez una gran responsabilidad. Estábamos casi a mitad de temporada y había que consultárselo, a los dos jugadores que llevaban, más tiempo confiando en mi trabajo.

Con Nacho Coll, llevábamos 7 años trabajando juntos. Hacia poco había conseguido alcanzar su mejor nivel de juego y clasificación. Había ganado un duro Future en España sin ceder ni un set, y ganado a buenos adversarios.

Con Andoni Vivanco llevábamos unos 8 meses trabajando full time , la verdad que todo estaba marchando mejor incluso de lo esperado había ganado 2 Futures y jugado una final , precisamente perdiendo 6/7 en el tercer set contra otro jugador con el que también he compartido buenas y bonitas batallas, el Bombardero Guillermo Alcaide , y ojala las volvamos a vivir en breve si todo sale bien.

Cuando les comente que opinaban sobre la posible incorporación, respondieron afirmativamente, sabían del potencial que tenia Javi, también que su carácter no era fácil pero me dieron su aprobación, se le ve muy buena persona.

Unos días más tarde ya estaba en el aeropuerto de Madrid reunido con Javi y con sus padres , antes de que él y yo emprendiésemos vuelo hacia Las Palmas de Gran Canarias e iniciar nuestra primera gira de 3 Futures , a la que después de incorporarían Nacho y Andoni.

Desde el primer momento provoqué que entre Javi y yo la comunicación fuera directa y clara. Quise saber de inmediato cuales eran su objetivos al igual que ya lo hice, con Nacho y Andoni. una vez los conocí le expresé tanto a el y a su padre como veía yo lo que había que hacer para convertirlos en realidad.

Trabajamos y tomamos decisiones durante 4 meses muy duros como era de esperar conviviendo y trabajando con tres deportistas individuales con carácter, con objetivos propios cada uno, muy competitivos y además de diferentes edades 17, 19 y 22 años.

Una mezcla casi imposible y más teniendo en cuenta que yo también tengo mi carácter, soy de ideas fijas y en aquel momento pensé que lo más acertado , y lo que más podía hacer subir el nivel de cada uno de ellos era el no ceder en ningún aspecto.

El experimento no duro el tiempo deseado pero seguro que todos nosotros lo recordamos como unos meses emotivos, difíciles de aceptar, incómodos y que dejan huella para el futuro pero en definitiva un buen aprendizaje.

He dicho emotivos porque situaciones que viví estos meses lo fueron: estuve en un Future y en un Chalenger en Rumania solo con Javi. Nacho que fue el que decidió que la mejor opción era Rumania, necesitaba de un tiempo para tomar decisiones importantes, finalmente no vino, y a la vuelta me informó que había decidido dar un cambio y que dejaba de trabajar conmigo, no puedo negarlo un duro golpe.

A las semanas "Koki" y Javi me informaban del nuevo proyecto deportivo de la Federación de tenis de Madrid en el que Javi podía tomar un papel relevante, y la verdad los entrenadores que lideraban este proyecto y en especial el de Javi mi amigo Oscar Burrieza, se merecían todo mi respeto a parte con la seguridad que se trabajaría en la misma línea que ya se había iniciado. Y lo más importante Javi estaría en casa junto a su familia algo insustituible e muy importante para él. A pesar de la ilusión que en poco tiempo le había cogido a Javito, había que aceptar algo difícil para mi, pero que era mejor para el.

Incómodos porque a la semana de no trabajar con Javi hubo el primer enfrentamiento en pista entre él y Andoni, y mi cabeza aún no estaba preparada. Además también me encontré en un Future en Italia solo con Andoni cuando habíamos decidido ir allí porque era mejor la opción para Javi pero decidimos correctamente ya que Andoni le era lo mismo.

Y finalmente una gran huella quedó en mi al sentir el vació real, que hace que uno aprenda de verdad. Unas semanas más tarde me llamo Andoni que estaba unos días en su casa de Bilbao, había decidido irse a trabajar a Barcelona. Colombo debía empezar de cero.

Pero todos estos recuerdos vienen en mi cabeza gracias al presente que es lo que hay que saborear de verdad: Javi ha pasado su primera previa de un grande y ha debutado en su primer cuadro final de Roland Garros de la manera que más aprenderá jugando un maratoniano partido a 5 sets, después de batallar mucho en toda la previa. Enhorabuena Javi!

Nacho acaba de jugar y ganar la final del Future de Valldoreix después de haber superado una intervención quirúrgica de su hombro derecho, que le mantuvo apartado de las competiciones 6 meses. Grande Nacho!

Andoni en su casa llevando ya otro tipo de vida completamente distinta por decisión suya. Mucha suerte Andoni.

Y Colombo como veis sumergido en su proyecto Passion Talent Group al que tanta ilusión le esta dedicando y que precisamente nació como Javi, Andoni y Nacho, bien saben durante esos duros 4 meses.

Nadal es humano y Djokovic también.

Si hay algo que hace el deporte especial es su tinte humano que lo convierte en algo mágico. Esa incertidumbre, esa duda de cómo va reaccionar uno frente a cada situación, como se va levantar ese día, si las buenas sensaciones estarán disponibles en el momento clave. Todas estas y otras muchas incógnitas , hacen que el deporte sea lo que es.

A veces nos olvidamos de ello y pensamos, que algunos deportistas son máquinas en vez de personas y aunque no se refleje esta faceta humana , la mayoría de veces cuando están compitiendo, no quiere decir que no exista, y que en cualquier momento pueda aflorar como es lo más natural.

Permítanme que les cuente una experiencia personal: Hace unos años decidí algo que ya tendría que haber decidido hacía tiempo, ponerme unos audífonos para oír mejor de lo que oía. Desde los 5 años padezco una sordera considerable en los dos oídos, y la verdad que a veces me pregunto como viví así hasta los 28.

Me acuerdo que el médico que me atendió se sorprendió que no hubiese perdido el tono de voz, y a raíz de esto me explico una ley que afecta a todos los humanos, la ley del mínimo esfuerzo. Me dijo que lo normal es que si yo no me oía a mi mismo, ¿porque hacer el esfuerzo de hablar alto?, si es más cómodo y conlleva menos desgaste el hablar bajo.

Desde ese día aplique esta teoría en muchos de mis planteamientos como entrenador de tenis. ¿Por qué tengo que dar dos pasos para pegar a la bola si con uno me vale?

Precisamente esta ley del mínimo esfuerzo ayuda entre otras muchas cosas a que el deporte sea lo que es, algo apasionante que siguen millones de personas. Hace entre otras cosas que hoy gane uno y mañana otro, que hoy sea número uno Rafa, y que probablemente en breve lo sea Djokovic.

Esta confusión hace que muchos de nosotros pensemos en ocasiones, que los deportista no son humanos, también lo piensan algunos de los mencionados entre ellos. Aun recuerdo el primer juego y break, que le hizo Federer a Rafa en la primera final de Wimbledon en el 2007 , creo que fueron cuatro restos ganadores, algo inhumano debió pensar Rafa, que me confeso que antes de esta final se decía así mismo y se repetía que había que ganarla, pero que en verdad y como era natural no se lo creía aun .

¿A donde voy con todo esto? En las finales de Miami e Indian Wells Rafa empezó ganando a Djokovic el primer set, e incluso por los gestos que hacia Novak y por el tenis que desarrollo Rafa, en algunos juegos parecía que Rafa iba ganar la final consiguiendo otro set más, y el respeto que Rafa ganó frente a Novak , después de ganarle la final del US Open en una superficie muy similar a la de estos dos primeros Masters 1000 del año, permanecía allí intacto. “lo frustrante de jugar con Rafa es descubrir que de cada vez es mejor” , comento Djokovic al concluir la final de Grand Slam Americano.

Pero de repente apareció el rasgo humano de Rafa, no se puede considerar ni un error sino más bien algo natural, perdió la concentración, bajo la intensidad en su piernas, retrocedió la posición en la pista, se lió más de la cuenta con su servicio, y esto metió a Djokovic en ambas finales , e hizo que su tenis creciese, que su servicio mejorase más, que sus tiros y su posición en la pista fuesen de cada vez más fulminantes, que su físico pareciese no tener fin, y que su cabeza pareciese la de su oponente. Esto llevo a invertir el respeto, la confianza y que Novak ganase las dos finales.

Más que invertir el respeto lo definiría una inversión de confianza, ya que Rafa siempre ha respetado a sus adversarios y Novak respeta siempre mucho a Rafa.

Lo ocurrido en Miami e Indian Wells pienso que ha dado pie a lo que ha ocurrido en las dos finales de Madrid y Roma. Djokovic sigue pletórico de juego, de físico, de cabeza, de confianza en su patrón,…y Rafa por otro lado aparenta dudas.

Conociendo a Rafa y a su tío y entrenador Toni, y observando el nivel infernal que esta desempeñando Novak, algo nuevo a lo que se están enfrentando. Estilos de juego y puntos fuertes y débiles distintos a los de Federer, hasta hace poco, su más directo rival. Lo que esta por llegar es apasionante y más a la vuelta de la esquina de dos Grand Slams.

Si antes Rafa tenia en Federer su objetivo y le acabo derrotando a base de bolas altas al revés, con fortaleza mental, e incluso tratándolo cada vez más de tu a tu en cuanto a juego agresivo se refiere.

Ahora pasa que lo está retando un jugador más expresivo, más incluso que él (con lo bueno y lo malo que trae esto), que las bolas altas incluso al revés, las contrarresta con winers cruzados, y paralelos, desde dentro de la pista. Por ello Rafa va hacer todo lo que este en sus manos y todo lo que se le recomiende , entreno a entreno, partido a partido , al igual que ha hecho hasta ahora con todo lo que se le ha resistido.

Espectadores a disfrutar, percibiendo los cambios que estos dos humanos van a llevar a cabo para salir vencedores, en esta ya declarada batalla Nadal vs Dojokovic. El espectáculo entre personas esta garantizado, lo que no se sabe es el resultado final. Divirtámonos incluso Rafa, Novak y sus equipos. Gracias!

“Nole” imbatible incluso en tierra a nivel de mar / Unbeatable "Nole" Even On Earth Sea Level

En casa frente el televisor un nuevo duelo de héroes (Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic), pase lo que pase en la final de hoy ambos ya salen por méritos propios con la etiqueta que les identifica como los dioses. Lo que están consiguiendo ambos es extraordinario y no bastaría todo este post para describirlo. El nivel de los seis primeros juegos que llevo presenciando 3/3 certifican todo lo dicho anteriormente.

Una semana atípica la que hemos pasado, para mí fuera de las pistas, pero muy productiva dentro de los despachos reunión tras reunión en Madrid con patrocinadores, y con empresas del sector del marketing deportivo. Generando ilusión, explicando mi visión del tenis, lo que se necesita para triunfar, las piedras con las que se encuentran los jugadores antes de llegar a la meta del profesionalismo y como proporcionarles todo lo necesario para llegar lo más alto posible.

Como he comentado otras veces el tenis de momento no lo cambiaremos, no basta con tener condiciones, hay que tener medios invertir mucho tiempo y dinero sabiendo que las posibilidades de recuperarlo son mínimas, pocas por todo lo que rodea el tenis y los ingresos que genera al ser un espectáculo a nivel mundial. Esperemos que con el tiempo esto cambie y no desistiremos de intentarlo pero mientras tanto no queda más remedio que atarse los zapatos y pelear.

Lo que me mantuvo unido a las pistas esta semana pasada ,fue el Master 1000 de Roma, y como cuando yo mismo, como la mayoría de gente después de una jornada dura de trabajo puedo ver como se reflejan en el deporte, los mismos valores que intento aplicar en el día a día.

Poder ver como Rafa estuvo a punto de quedarse fuera por tener un mal día, pero que se mantuvo allí aceptó las recomendaciones que desde su box ,su tío Toni Nadal le trasmitía, y finalmente logro, acercarse al nivel que él sabe debe lograr, cuando quiere recuperar el terreno cedido.

Ver a Federer como selecciona ,y en verdad desde que conozco, la teoría de mi amigo Emilio Sanchez de que Federer se esta preparando y se esta concentrando en Wimbledon , coincido cada vez más con el. El patrón de juego que esta llevando incluso en tierra así lo confirma.

6/4 para Dokovic increíble el nivel de ambos , muy igualado, aunque Djokovic esta rozando la perfección. Rafa a llevado su cuerpo al limite en el 5/3 para recuperar el break de desventaja que llevaba, y Nole se ha precipitado un poco pero en el siguiente juego le ha devuelto el break, que le ha dado el primer set.

Novak esta intratable hay que felicitarle por el nivel de juego que esta desarrollando esta temporada, lo que le esta premiando con esta imbatibilidad y en breve con el número uno mundial.

2/0 la lucha del juego anterior de película , parece que va a ser la tónica de este partido hasta el final. Rafa acaba de recuperar el break. Gracias Novak, gracias Rafa , gracias gladiadores esto es maravilloso.

Que bonito es ver a Toni Nadal y a Rafael Maimo (fisioterapeuta) en el Box de Rafa disfrutando del partido, a pesar de ir por debajo. Es que hay que disfrutarlo y esto es lo que recordamos ayer con Rafael, en una breve conversación que mantuvimos. Me alegro seguir sintiendo su educación de siempre, su humildad al preguntarme como le había visto en el partido con Gasquet, y acabamos la conversación recordando que hay que divertirse como si fuese la primera final en Roma, que tanto lucho y que tanto se divirtió. En definitiva fiel a sus principios.

6/4 para Djokovic también en el segundo, que le convierte en flamante campeón de Roma. Hay que felicitarle se merece todo lo que le esta sucediendo su mejora es considerable indudable. Es el mejor en estos momentos también sobre tierra e incluso a nivel de mar. Felicidades a Novak y a todo su equipo!!! y como no felicidades Rafa por su siempre fenomenal comportamiento y por su buen nivel también en el partido de hoy.

Let us hope that in a short period of time this will change and we do not give up to try, but meanwhile we have no choice but to tie our shoes and to fight.

What kept me tied to the courts this week, was the 1000 Master of Rome, and when my self, as most people after a hard work day I could see as it isreflected in the sport, the same values I try to apply to me every day.

Watch as Rafa was on the border of staying outside for having had a bad day, but he stayed there accepted recommendations from the uncle box, Toni Nadal, and finally he accomplished it, approaching the level that he knows to be achieved when he wants to recover the lost field.

See Federer as selects, and indeed since I know, the theory of my friend Emilio Sanchez that Federer is preparing and is concentrated in Wimbledon, I agree more with him. This is confirmed by the pattern he is playing , even on land as well.

¡En la caja mágica apuesto por Rafa! / In The Magic Box I Bet For Rafa!

Al iniciar este post me encuentro en el avión de regreso de Madrid a Mallorca ayer asistí a una reunión muy productiva en la Caja Mágica. También me hubiera gustado presenciar en directo el partido entre Nadal y Del Potro que no se disputó por la inesperada lesión y abandono de Del Potro por problemas en la cadera.

La reunión tuvo un fin totalmente unificador estábamos presentes inversores, deportistas, formadores y especialistas en captación de patrocinio para analizar y estructurar los principios básicos de un nuevo proyecto, que pretende que tenistas lleguen lo más lejos posible y siempre buscando la excelencia deportiva en su totalidad.

En el avión de regreso seguía dandole vueltas a un aspecto que he repetido varias veces en el blog y más aun después de ver por primera vez la Caja Mágica, nueva e impresionante instalación donde se celebra el Master 1.000 de Madrid. Pude comprobar una vez más lo que mueve el tenis y lo poco y los pocos que ganan o viven del tenis, unicamente los 150 primeros.

El resto de jugadores, algunos considerados profesionales pero en realidad amaters ya que su practica deportiva les cuesta dinero, al igual que muchos entrenadores de competición que en según que momentos tienen o tenemos que desistir de dedicarnos únicamente a la competición .

Una vez más me reitero en denunciar el porqué tenistas (que deberían ya ser profesionales) que estan jugando previas como la de este Master les sigue costando dinero jugar estos torneos. Esto sin entrar a analizar los beneficios restandoles el dinero invertido hasta poder llegar a jugar estas previas. Sigo sin entender el por que no existe nigún responsables del tenis que se preocupe de estas situaciones y busque soluciones que permitan que no tan solo 150 tenistas coman del tenis.

La continuación de este post la estoy llevando a cabo ya en casa disfrutando presenciando uno de estos duelos (Nadal vs Federer) que hacen historia y como no podía ser de otra manera muy igualado y más teniendo en cuenta que las condiciones indoor, la altura y al mejor de 3 sets es en donde Federer aun más tiene que decir pero sin olvidar que la superficie, la Tierra, es en donde Rafa es invencible.

Como era de esperar esta siendo un partido igualado en el que cada uno intenta implantar sus mejores armas y en el que cuando uno pierde un poco la concentración el otro le come terreno en su patrón y así va sucediendo, si Rafa implanta su intensidad de juego con bolas largas y profundas provoca los errores por aceleración en Federer y la inversa cuando Rafa deja de imprimir esta intensidad y retrocede en su juego y sus bolas quedan más cortas y sus piernas paradas es Federer quien se adueña de la pista y en los golpes que antes Federer se aceleraba ahora son definitivos.

5/7 6/2 6/3 para Nadal. Nada que envidiar de los partidos vividos en este Master 1000 de Madrid entre Roger y Feliciano Lopez o Gimeno y Llodrá o Djokovic y Ferrer y seguro que la final de mañana que todo apunta que será entre Rafa y Djokovic número uno y dos también va ser un partidazo a un ritmo infernal, tal y como me lo describió Rafa después de la semifinal del 2009 entre ambos.

Ya domingo a la espera de esta tarde disfrutar de la final muchos compañeros me piden como veo la final y hoy me voy a pronunciar antes del partido. Rafa gracias a su constante trabajo se ha convertido en un número uno por méritos propios y nadie puede discutir que cuando esta en su máximo nivel es el mejor en todas las superficies, empezó siéndolo en tierra, luego en hierba y finalmente en dura.

El conseguir que su nivel de juego este por encima de los demás en todas las superficies le implica mantener una concentración total y constante para no bajar para nada su intensidad de juego su posición dentro de la pista, que junto con su golpes desborda a sus oponentes, a los que no les queda más remedio que anticiparse, y arriesgar demasiado, antes de sentirse desbordados o al estarlo tener la paciencia y la capacidad de lucha, para recuperarse y encontrar una mejor oportunidad para pasar a atacar.

Lo que para mi ha ocurrido en las últimas finales entre Rafa y Djokovic en las que Rafa empezo ganando desbordando a su rival hubo mas tarde una perdida de concentración de Rafa, que de repente deja de mantener intensidad en su juego, en benefició del oponente el cual coge la iniciativa del punto y la posición en pista y al tratarse de Djokovic , buen sacador, y además en pista dura esta perdida de concentración sumada a una falta de intensidad se convierte en algo irremediable.

Tal y como he oído muchas veces a Toni Nadal lo normal es que lo que viene ocurriendo no deje de ocurrir únicamente por tratarse de una final o una partido importante, por ello tenemos que contar en que hoy esta perdida de concentración o intensidad vuelva a aparecer, aunque no me cabe ninguna duda que el duo Nadal (Rafa y Toni) lleva trabajando en ello y entrenando si que se consigue cambiar lo que uno quiere y que deje de ocurrir. Pero en el peor de los casos no es lo mismo que esto le ocurra en pista dura que en pista de tierra, afortunadamente para Rafa en tierra tiene solución. Aunque hay que tener en cuenta que el partido se puede disputar en pista indoor y con la altura de Madrid, beneficia a los sacadores.

Pero ahora sin marear la perdiz como decimos en España, si tengo que apostar, apuesto por Rafa. En unas horas podremos disfrutarlo y ojala que en la Caja mágica aparezca la magia y haga que los responsables de la ATP se decidan a destinar una parte de los inmensos ingresos que genera esta organización a los tenistas clasificados más arriba del 150 y que son profesionales a los que el tenis les sigue costando dinero.

De nuevo con vosotros, amigos, me hubiera gustado poder compartir con vosotros mediante el blog redactando un post como he venido haciendo este último año durante las finales importantes y aunque pude hacer un hueco en el día a día para poder seguir en directo la final de Indian Wells en el Club de Tenis el Casco, en Marbella, vi la de Miami en Jaén camino de Madrid a Málaga en casa de unos amigos gran aficionados al tenis y la de Montecarlo gracias a Rafa y a Toni Nadal la pude presenciar en directo como he venido haciendo estos últimos años (todo un sueño, impensable cuando de niño como un aficionado mas vivía estas finales desde la pequeña pantalla).

Que bonito es el tenis, fue el titulo de uno de mis últimos post y esto es lo que de entrada quiero comentarles después de estas dos Master finales Novak-Rafa y de ver ganar a Rafa su séptimo Master Montecarlo, los dos los primeros dieron por concluido el primer ciclo del la temporada en pista dura y el ultimo el inicio del Circuito en tierra.

Este Trimestre ha consolidado a Novak Djokovic como número 1 en pista dura outdoor , además de convertirlo en claro número dos mundial seguro que por un tiempo largo llenando el vacio que Rafael Nadal dejó merecidamente para ocupar el número uno, Roger Federer parece no tener ni la edad ni probablemente la motivación suficiente para agarrarlo y no soltarlo y Murray con su inestabilidad no parece ni plantearselo.

Un número dos que al igual que ha ocurrido con Rafa tendrá su premio: ser el número 1 mundial, cuando sea por méritos propios al igual que lo ha hecho en dura el mejor en otra superficie.

Lo mejor de Novak este trimestre para mi, ha sido lo claro que ha tenido en todo momento como jugar los puntos importantes en esta superficie, sobre todo aquellos puntos que declinan el partido de un lado o del otro. Los ha jugado como más daño sabe hacerlo en pista dura: agresivo, mandando, moviendo el contrario con solidez, sin errores, con margen e incluso dispuesto a llegar al limite de sus fuerzas para afrontar el siguiente punto, siempre preparado por si hay la posibilidad de atacar una bola más, no dudando en hacerlo para se convincente y definitivo.

De las finales contra Rafa las dos grandes dudas que tenia era si mentalmente “Nole” se mantendría estable y así lo hizo, incluso en fases como el tie break del 3er set en Miami, y si se mantendría tan firme, solido y convincente, consiguiendo afrontar los puntos clave, teniendo incluso a Rafa enfrente, sin lugar a duda el numero uno en solidez.

Que bonito es el tenis por la variedad y continuidad que nos da este deporte, este año igual tenemos varios números uno (hablando de superficies), de momento hemos visto quién es el mejor en dura outdoor y en estos dos meses veremos quién es el número uno en tierra. Todo apunta a Nadal (sus récords inigualables como las 7 coronas de Montecarlo no dan cabida a pensar otra cosa) y más adelante veremos quien dominara la hierba (allí veo más dudas aunque si tengo que apostar también lo haré por Rafa).

Este deporte también me parece maravilloso por las constantes sucesiones de duelos míticos. Ahora que los Federer-Nadal ya no serán siempre finales, y que todo apunta a que de cada vez serán menos y mas dominados por Rafa, ha entrado en escena Dojokovic. Sus duelos con Nadal ya se respiran como de los grandes y seguro que de cada uno se podrán escribir maravillosas páginas , y más dependiendo de la superficie en que se jueguen.

Me reitero una vez más en mi tristeza de que este deporte tan bonito con una estructura de torneos a nivel mundial encabezados por los Grand Slam, Master 1000 y 500, los 250, los Challengers y los Futures solo dé de comer, a unos 100 jugadores y que a partir del 200 ATP ya les cueste a estos últimos el dinero de su bolsillo.

Por que motivo los Futures torneos en donde uno empieza la carrera al profesionalismo puro y duro y , en donde conviven desde algunos 200 ATP hasta los que buscan sus primeros puntos ATP, siguen estando controlados y organizados por la Federación Internacional de Tenis, por que motivo estos torneos no están organizados por la ATP, y a la vez esta empieza a preocuparse no solo por los tops , si no por todos los jugadores que sin ser top 100 se comportan, trabajan y compiten semana tras semana como cualquier profesional. Ya va siendo hora que este deporte trate a todos los jugadores como auténticos números 1 y luego si que será bonito.

Again with you, friends, I would like to share with you through the blog writing a post as I have done this last year for the major finals and although I could make a hole in the day to day to be able to follow in live the Indian Wells final in the Tennis Club “El Casco” in Marbella, I saw the Miami final in Jaén going from Madrid to Malaga at home of a friends , great tennis fans and the Montecarlo , thanks to Toni and Rafa Nadal. I could see it alive as I have been doing over the last years (a dream)(, unthinkable when I was a child as an amateur watching and living these tournaments from the small TV set).

What beautiful tennis is, was the title of one of my last post and this is what I want to tell you after these two Master finals between Novak and Rafa and after having seen Rafa to win his seventh Monte Carlo Master. The two first finals have completed the first cycle of the hard court season and the last the begining of the clay circuit .

What beautiful tennis is because of its variety and continuity , that gives to us this sport, this year we could get the opportunity of having several number ones (talking about surfaces), for the moment I have seen who is the best in hard outdoor and in two months we will see who will be number one on clay. Everything aims to Nadal (their records and his seven crowns in Monte Carlo do not give scope to think otherwise), and later on we will see who will dominate the grass ( I get further doubt but if I have to bet I will do for Rafa).

This sport is also wonderful for constant succession of legendary mitical duels. Now that the Federer-Nadal are no longer finals, and everything addres to that will be more or less dominated by Rafa, Dojokovic has entered into scene. His matches with Nadal already can be breathing as the biggest ones and sure that from each one of this wonderful pages will be written and even more depending of the surface they will play.

I insist once again with my sadness, that this sport is so nice with a tournaments structure around the world lead by the Grand Slam, Masters 1000 and 500, 250, the Challengers and Futures only can feed, about 100 players and from the 200th ATP it cost them their money from their pockets .

For that reason the Futures tournaments where one starts the race to the pure and simple professionalism and, where living from some 200th ATP to those seeking their first ATP points, are still controlled and organized by the International Tennis Federation. Why these tournaments are not organized by the ATP tour, and at the same time the ATP begins to worry not only for the tops players?, not only for players being top 100 it is time that the ATP, things in other ones that work and compete week after week as to become professional. It is now time that this sport treats all players as real numbers one and later on, it will be nice.

Reflexionando y avanzando acuerdos / Advancing Agreements

En el último post que escribí destacaba lo importante que es trabajar en lo que deseamos que vaya a ocurrir para que si lo perseguimos acabe convirtiendose en realidad.

En el desarrollo de cualquier sueño, como el de ayudar deportistas a ser profesionales, o la de ellos mismos en convertirse en profesionales, se llega a un punto de inflexión en el que la reflexión constante de uno mismo o de las personas que nos ayudan toma un valor muy importante.

En el tenis no hay otra, la competición consume mucho dinero, tiempo y esfuerzo al deportista y a su entorno, como para estar perdido sin un objetivo bien definido de lo que perseguimos en cada momento y confiar en la suerte.

Es muy difícil para un coach encontrar el equilibrio ideal a la hora de manejar estas reflexiones. Y probablemente como en la educación de cualquier padre hacia un hijo quizás siempre es más conveniente pasarse por repetirlas una y otra vez que no por no hacerlo.

Mi sueño es seguir convirtiendo Passion Talent Group cada vez más en una realidad y crear al mismo tiempo un programa de trabajo y funcionamiento Mental Road System que ayude a deportistas a tener la fuente de energía necesaria que los estimule y prepare para recorrer un kilómetro más logrando algo tan grande como superarse a ellos mismos.

Desde el post que escribí hace unas semanas en Algarve a este que estoy escribiendo en Reus se han ido dando pasos importantes en los proyectos , que precisamente dos años atrás en la misma sala que me encuentro ahora en El Club de Tenis Monterols(Reus) empecé feedbaks con entrenadores, jugadores y familiares de estos jugadores.

El Mental Road System pretende constantemente acercar tanto al joven tenista como al semi-profesional, a tenista profesional usando el sentido común e intentado evitar dentro de las posibles decisiones que en el futuro puedan tomar aquellas que le puedan perjudicar.

Por ello Passion Talent Group busca acuerdos con centros de tenis y organizaciones que ayuden al deportista a avanzar en el camino hacia su sueño lo más profesionalmente posible y lo menos traumático personalmente hablando.

Estas semanas se han reforzado las alianzas con Planificaciones Sports Management (Con sede en Marbella en el Club de tenis el Casco) y con America International (pionera y lider mundial en elsector de la educación y el deporte) y se ha iniciado la relación con Premier Sport (con sede en Vilamoura y Vale do Lobo en Algarve, Portugal).

Estos acuerdos permitirán en un futuro inmediato a los active y previus players no abandonar tanto tiempo ni tan pronto sus hogares si deciden intentar el camino hacia el profesionalismo y no desistir de compaginar sus estudios con el tenis.

A otros como los Image y Leader Players les permitirá retomar sus estudios y orientar su futuro deportivo disponiendo de más infraestructura para ello. A los Former, Image y Leader Players animarles a que encabecen es espíritu reflexivo (tan importante) en este proyecto que aporten su experiencia sus conocimientos mediante consejos que seguro que serán muy importantes y de gran ayuda. Passion Talent Group siempre que así lo reclamen intentará lo mismo con ellos.

In the last post I wrote highlighting how important it is to work on what we wish it to happen so that and at the end could become a reality.

In the development of any dream, as it to help sportsmen to be professionals, or themselves become professionals, we can reach a turning point with constantly reflectioning of oneself or people who help us it is a very important value.

In tennis there is another, the competition consumes lot of money, time and effort to the sportsman and their surroundings as for moments go lost without a well defined objective, with the purpose of we want in every moment and rely on in the good luck.

It is very difficult for a coach to find the ideal balance when handling these reflections. And probably as in the education of any father to a son might always be more convenient to go through repeat them most times not for less.

My current dream is to continue making Passion Talent Group more and more a reality and create next to it a program of working and functioning Mental Road System to help sportsman to create the source of energy that stimulates them and prepare also to travel one kilometer more achieving something as large as it is beating themselves.

From the post I wrote a few weeks ago in Algarve to this that I'm writing in Reus steps have been important to these projects that precisely two years ago in the same room that I am now in the Club of tennis Monterols (Reus) I have started one of the first steps: feedbags with coaches, players and relatives of these players.

Mental Road System aims to constantly bring to both the young tennis player as the semi-professional to professional , tennis player from using the common meaning trying to avoid possible decisions that in the future can be taken away from the bad decisions making. For that reason, Passion Talent Group seeks agreements with tennis centers and organizations to help the players to advance on the path to their dream doing it less traumatic and in the way more professional personally speaking.

These weeks have we have been doing strengthened alliances with Planificaciones Sports Management (headquartered in Marbella in el Casco Tennis Club) and with America International (pioneer and world leader in the sector of education and sport) and the relationship with Premier Sport has begun (based in Vilamoura and Vale do Lobo in Algarve)(, Portugal).

These agreements will allow in the near future to active them and previous players not let so long their homes if they decide to try the way to professionalism and not to desist from combining their studies with tennis.

Others, such as the Image and Leader Players can allow them to resume their studies and to orientate their sportive future with more infrastructure to do so. Give Thanks to the persons that have renewed confidence to this dream remaining and further more strengthening its contribution to the Group that every player needs for paving the difficult road to go. To congratulate to those starting, together we will face these very difficult times that put away the achievement of the goals which bring us closer to dreams.

To the Former, Image and Leader Players encourage them to lead the very important reflective spirit of this project, to provide his experience through their expertise that surely that will be very important and helpful. Nada es fruto de la casualidad / Nothing Is a Fruit Of Chance

Estoy en Algarve Portugal, allí hay 3 Futures, no es la primera vez que estoy en ellos y tengo muy buenos y bonitos recuerdos que hacen que valore y agradezca el poder estar aquí de nuevo. Además en esta ocasión estamos entrenando en las magnificas instalaciones del Premier Sports en Vilamora y Valle de lobo de mi amigo y gran profesional Pedro Frazao.

La semana pasada en Mallorca fue muy intensa la verdad, había que aprovecharla al máximo: intentar sacar para adelante todos los deberes de Passion Talent Group, Reflexionar como ayudar a Agustín Boje (330 ATP mejor clasificación) además de la decisión momentánea o definitiva del Former Player Andoni Vivanco de abandonar el tenis de competición y disfrutar al máximo la posibilidad que de nuevo Rafael Nadal y su tío Toni me brindaron para que algún jugador vinculado a Passion Talent Group entrenase una semana con el, en esta ocasión lo aprovechó el Former Player Nacho Coll (412 ATP mejor clasificación) con quien he tenido el placer de trabajar muchos años (actualmente trabaja en el Real Club Tenis Barcelona).

En los entrenos de Rafa y Nacho he disfrutado por partida doble observando la evolución de ambos. He sentido de nuevo de cerca una vez más la dureza de este deporte y observado como dos jugadores como ellos han aprendido a afrontarla de la mejor manera, con buena cara y sobre todo sin lamentaciones.

La semana de Cartagena con Agustín Boje y estos días con Nacho coll he apreciado mucho el nivel que han adquirido, fruto del trabajo, constancia, reflexión, empeño, ilusión, humildad y precisamente no de la casualidad. Nivel que a buen seguro va a ir a más ya que estos aspectos sumados a su mayor madurez siguen al pie del cañón.

Y como digo en el texto anterior, nada de lo que ocurre es fruto de la casualidad, y por ello, también analizo el porque jugadores como Agustín y Nacho decidieron en su momento cortar la relación profesional conmigo y ahora que he coincidido con ellos y aprovechando que hemos intercambiado opiniones, me quedo principalmente en lo que me han trasmitido comentando y que me va a ayudar a mejorar, a aprender, asi mismo a escuchar, seguro que antes me falto.

Después de reunirme y cenar ayer con Pedro Frazao propietario del Vilamoratenis y responsable también de la gestión del Tenis Valle de Lobo y contarme sus proyectos inmediatos y casi ya reales que llevara a cabo en el Vilamoratenis otra vez más me vino a la cabeza, lo de nada es fruto de la casualidad.

A Pedro le conozco desde hace más de 15 años y aún recuerdo aquella vez que apareció en Mallorca para conocer de primera mano el Torneo Senior Tour que se organizaba en Calvia. Se propuso organizar uno en Portugal y ahora con el de este año ya llevara diez además de tres en Brasil. Por esto cuando ayer me explicaba sus ideas ya casi reales pensé las conversaciones con el en estos años pasados donde ya me transmitio este amor al tenis y esta disposición a tomar riesgos para llevar estas ilusiones a termino.

Enhorabuena Pedro, Koki, Luis, Emilio, Toni y un largo etc por lo conseguido con el sudor del trabajo con ilusión y con la seguridad de que tarde o temprano llevareis y lleváis para adelante vuestras ilusiones.

I'm in Algarve Portugal, there are three Futures, it is not the first time that I participate as a coach in them and have very good and beautiful memories that make me to value and thank the opportunities to be here again. Beside it on this occasion we are training in the magnificent facilities of Premier Sports in Vilamora and Valle de Lobo of my friend and great professional Pedro Zafrao.

In Mallorca last week was very intense truly, we had to make the most of it: trying to get all the issues open of Passion Talent Group, To reflex about the opportunity of helping again to Augustine Boje (330 best ATP ranking) in addition of the previous mentioned the temporary or final decision of Former Player Andoni Vivanco to leave tennis competition and to fully enjoy the possibility that, again Rafael Nadal and his uncle Toni gave me to make a player linked to Passion Talent Group to train one week with Rafa, this time took it ,the Former Player Nacho Coll (412 best ATP classification) with whom I have had the pleasure of working for many years (currently plays at the Royal Club Tennis Barcelona).

When they Rafa and Nacho were training I enjoyed two times following the evolutions of both. I felt again very close once again the toughness of this sport and how this two players have learned to deal with it in the best way, with good character and more of it no complaining.

The week of Cartagena with Agustín Boje and these days with Nacho Coll I could much appreciate the high level he has acquired, due to the labour, perseverance, reflexion, commitment, enthusiasm, humility and precisely not by chance. Level that for sure will rise and that these aspects added to his greater maturity will do him to reach the summit.

And as I said in the previous text, nothing of what is happening is the result of an accident, and that is why I also analyse it why players such as Augustine and Nacho, decided to eventually cut the professional relationship with me? And now when I have comment to them and have together advantage exchanging opinions point of view, I keep mainly what they have told to me and it will help me to improve, to learn to listen for sure I miss it before.

After meeting and having dinner yesterday with Pedro Zafraro owner of the tennis Vilamora and responsible also for the management of Valle del Lobo tennis and present me his immediate projects now almost real that will take place in the tennis Vilamora , once time more came to my mind Nothing is a result of a chance.

I knew Peter for more than 15 years and still remember when he appeared in Mallorca to see by himself Senior Tournament Tour organized in Calvia. He proposed himself to organize one in Portugal and now this year ten tournaments have been completed and three in Brazil. When yesterday he explained me almost real ideas I thought in conversations we hold these past years where he already conveyed me his love for tennis and this willingness to take risks to bring these dreams to the end.

Congratulations Peter, Koki, Luis, Emilio, Toni and a etc. by what you all have been achieved by sweating the work with illusion and with the security that earlier or later you will carry on forward your illusions.

Cobrar por objetivos es el futuro del deporte / Receivable By Objectives Is The Future Of Sport

Sábado 12 de febrero, 18:45 de la tarde. Estoy con el Former Player Passion Talent Group Agustín Boje en Murcia viendo el Real Betis Balompié, el equipo que llena el corazón del Utrerano. No lo está pasando muy bien, ya que su equipo está perdiendo 0 3. Algo raro está pasando (hay problemas en el equipo verdiblanco y se intuye que los jugadores no estén cobrando; o al menos eso estamos presumiendo).

Sobre la mesa tenemos el diario Marca. Destaca como una de las noticias principales “Guardiola liga la mitad de su sueldo a los resultados” y en la última página, en el apartado “lo dice MARCA” hay otra noticia-opinión: “Cobrar por objetivos como Guardiola, es el futuro del deporte”. Simplemente me gustaría comentar que me parece deplorable que esto tan evidente ya no esté en funcionamiento, no sólo en el fútbol; sino en todo deporte de competición y por lo que a mi me acontece en todos los centros de alto rendimiento de tenis principalmente los federados.

En la noticia-opinión antes mencionada se comenta que el contrato de Guardiola debe ser el modelo hacia el que camine el deporte profesional en el futuro para que sea sostenible. En la actualidad, los clubes sea cual sea su especialidad, están acuciados por la enorme nómina que soportan. Ésta, muchas veces no viene acompañada por los objetivos fijados de antemano, con lo que se entra en un peligro circulo vicioso. El club no cubre presupuesto porque no cumple objetivos, si no cubre presupuesto, los jugadores no cobran, si los jugadores empiezan a tener problemas personales, en fin, que difícilmente encontraran el clima adecuado para cumplir con los objetivos.

Hace unas semanas en el primer Future del año estaba hablando con un grupo de compañeros míos que trabajan en un Centro de alto rendimiento les expuse muy claro mi punto de vista al respeto. “creo que deberíais ser todos autónomos y tener un contrato ligado con el centro al que trabajáis, siempre condicionado con los resultados”.

No concibo el trabajar en la competición en el tenis sin que exista esta presión que no es nada más y nada menos que la pura realidad, la que tiene que soportar el deportista en este caso el tenista o el futuro tenista (si no consigue sus objetivos su tenis se acaba). ¿Qué mejor manera que el entrenador o que el equipo que trabaje con el jugador o jugadores se vean con la misma necesidad de intentar por todos los medios cumplir lo objetivos marcados?

Aprovechando que estoy hablando de objetivos, me gustaría felicitar a Pablo Carreño por su segunda victoria conseguida este año en los Futures; en esta ocasión por el conseguido hoy en Murcia.

Quiero destacar el buen inicio de año y de relación profesional que Carreño y Javier Duarte están desarrollando nada más y nada menos que dos campeones y una final. También aprovechar para demostrar mi admiración a Duarte y más en este Post en el que estamos hablando de conseguir objetivos en definitiva éxitos o títulos nada más y nada menos que 34 títulos ATP como Coach (Corretja, Berasategui y Carlos Costa) y una ensaladera de Copa Davis como capitán.

Y ya que me encuentro en Murcia es una obligación acabar este post mencionando el titulo conseguido hoy por el murciano Nicolás Almagro en Brasil en el ATP de Costa de Sauipe ganando en la final 63 76 a la revelación del último Open de Australia, el Ucraniano Dolgopolov. Este titulo Conseguido por Almagro en Brasil es su segundo conseguido allí ya que el primero lo consiguió en el 2008.

Enhorabuena Nico. Quiero felicitarte a ti y a Murcia que desde hace muchos años organiza el mes de Febrero un circuito de Futures ATP tan importante como tu bien sabes para el desarrollo de jugadores profesionales.

Saturday 12 February, 18: 45 in the afternoon. I´m with the former player passion talent group Agustín Boje in Murcia seeing Real Betis Balompié, the team that fills the heart of man from Utrera. He is really happy , as their team is losing 0/3. Something weird is happening (there are problems in the green and white team ,players are not getting their salaries; or at least, that is what we are assuming).

On the table the Spanish sportive journal MARCA. Standing out as one of the main news "Guardiola, Barcelona FC coach says, “I will receive half of my salary depending of results" and on the last page in the section "MARCA says" there is another opinion-new: "Salary for goals as Guardiola, said, is the future of the sport". Just I would like to comment that I find it regrettable that this is so evident that I could not understand this is no longer in operation, not only in football; but in all sport competition and what I¨m thinking also in all high-performance tennis centers mainly the one supported by Tennis Federations.

The aforementioned opinion-new says Guardiola contract should be the model towards which sport professional must go in the future to make it sustainable. Now, clubs whatever their speciality, are distressed by the massive payroll support. This, many times not comes accompanied by targets fixed in advance, so it is entering in a danger vicious circle. The club does not cover budget because it does not meet objectives, if it does not cover budget, players do not receive salaries if the players start having personal problems hardly found the appropriate climate to achieve the objectives. A few weeks ago in the first year FutureFuture I was talking to a group of my colleagues that are working in a high performance centre I explained to them very clear my point of view to this respect. "I think you should be all autonomous and have a contract linked to the Centre to which you work, always driven up to the results".

I Do not conceive working in tennis competition with absence of pressure which is nothing more and nothing less than the pure reality, in this case the athlete the tennis player or future tennis player (if he do not achieve his objectives the tennis ends for him). What better way than the coach or team that works with the player or players view with the same need to try by all means fulfill the objectives marked?

Que bonito es el tenis / What beautiful Tennis is

Si el domingo pasado a estas horas me encontraba en el sofá de casa disfrutando de la final del Open de Australia una semana más tarde me encuentro en el sofá de la cafetería del Real Club Tenis Murcia presenciando y disfrutando la final del 4º Future ATP de España entre el Former Player Passion Talent Group Javier Marti y Guillermo Olaso. En estos momentos esta sirviendo Marti para ganar el 1er set 5 3 hasta el momento Javi esta jugando con mucha tranquilidad y manejando muy bien el partido.

Me encuentro en Murcia con Ankit Sachdeva jugador Hindú Passion Talent Group que ha disputado la previa del 5º Future en España que también se celebra en Murcia. Bonito partido el que disputó ayer Ankit 57 76 36, remonto una bola de partido en contra en el segundo set y aunque no pudo ganar el 3º fue un partido emotivo y de los que se aprenden.

En el partido de ayer de Ankit, en el 3er set de la semifinal de ayer que pude acercarme a ver entre Olaso y Pedro Clar y en el que estoy presenciando ahora en el que Javi no ha podido cerrar el set y esto que ha remontado varias bolas de break en contra una de ellas con un revés paralelo magistral, me he acordado con alegría del comentario que le salió del alma “que bonito es el tenis” a Oscar Burrieza “Burri” actual coach de Javi Marti desde hace año y medio, exjugador y gran compañero profesional cuando presenciábamos junto con Javi y su padre “Koki” la parte final del 1er set entre Rafa Nadal y David Ferrer en el ultimo Open de Australia en el que iba ganando David Ferrer 5 2 y que Rafa consiguió igualar a breaks aunque finalmente lo ganase Ferrer 64.

6 5 para Olaso. Y es que es así este deporte es muy bonito, individual, muy duro, muy sacrificado que fortalece mentalmente y prepara para afrontar la vida de una manera muy especial y que llena de unos valores y saberes muy importantes a los que lo practican con seriedad y con profesionalidad.

Cuidemos-lo al máximo hagamos que los que se dedican a el puedan seguir haciéndolo de la manera más correcta y que puedan al menos ir tirando y no tengan que acudir a prostituirse vendiendo partidos o dejarse ganar por temas de apuestas o artimañas de esta índole que no ayudan en absoluto.

No puede ser que los premios en metálico de los Futures (torneos en los que se consiguen los primeros puntos ATP y los suficientes para clasificarse por debajo de los 300 ATP para poder pasar a disputar Challengers) sigan siendo los mismos desde que se crearon y que la mayor parte del gasto del negocio de estos torneos (arbitros, supervisores, trabajadores de las federaciones, entrenadores, academias, grupos, encordadores, hoteles, ….) recaiga de cada vez más sobre las espaldas de los jugadores. Porque no se toman medidas al respeto ya!

Porque los arbitros y supervisores no ceden parte de sus ingresos, los trabajadores de las federaciones responsables de estos torneos no trabajan en mejorarlos, los entrenadores, academias y grupos no abaratan costes en lugar de incrementarlos, los encordadores no dejan de pegar estos atracos económicos y los hoteles oficiales dejan de ser los mas caros.

Mantengamos este deporte lo bonito que es, convirtamoslo en negocio si hay que convertirlo pero que el más beneficiado sea el actor en este caso el deportista y no el mas perjudicado y luego esto si, exigirles que lo den todo tal y como lo daban David Ferrer y Rafa Nadal en su partido en Australia y que emociono a “Burri”.

I´m in Murcia with Ankit Sachdeva Hindu player passion talent group which has played the previous 5th Future in Spain also held in Murcia. Nice match played yesterday Ankit lost it 5/7 7/6 3/6, he overcomes a match ball in the second set ball and although he did not win the 3rd it was an emotional match and one of the matches that you can learn.

Ankit´s game, yesterday at the 3rd set I could get to see the demi-final between Olaso and Pedro Clar and in the match I’m now seeing that Javi is not has able to close the set and beside it he has been overcoming several break balls one with a great parallel forehand, I remember the comment that came out from his soul "what beautiful tennis is " to Oscar Burrieza "Burri" current coach of Javi Marti since one year and a half, former player and great professional colleague of mine when we were seeing together first set final part between Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer in the passed Australian Open where David was up 5/2 and Rafa got equal break games but finally won I by Ferrer 6/4.

6/5 for Olaso. And it is as this sport is very nice, individual, very hard, very sacrificed you have to be mentally strengthens and prepares to face life in a very special way and full of values and important knowledge to whom that practice it with seriousness and professionalism.

Why referees and supervisors do not give part of their incomes, federation’s workers responsible for these tournaments don't work on improving it. Why trainers, academies and groups do not reduce costs rather than increase them, stringers must stop abusing economically and the official hotels are no longer to be the most expensive in the city.

Let´s Keep this sport as nice as it is, let´s change it in a business if it must be done but always thinking that the most benefited actor ought to be the athlete and not the more damaged and then we could, if might be required, to the actor as to give it all as was given by David Ferrer, and Rafa Nadal or Ankit and its Hungarian opposite or Guillermo Olaso, Pedro Clar and Javier Marti.

Novak Djokovic nuevo coleccionista / Novak Djokovic new collector

De nuevo compartiendo pensamientos y sentimientos con todos vosotros, ya tenia ganas, recién llegado del aeropuerto de dejar a Sergio Gutiérrez “Guti” y su compañero de entrenamientos Rafael Mazón que han jugado el tercer “Future” de Mallorca.

Enfrente del televisor de casa disfrutando de la final del primer Grand Slam del año el Open de Australia entre Djokovic y Murray, el serbio acaba de ganar el primer set 6/4 y pendiente de la blackberry ya que a la vez en Palma Nova se esta jugando la final del Future entre el Former Player Passion Talent Group Pedro Clar y el joven Pablo Carreño.

Al final del Post ya tendremos nuevo Campeón de Australia y también sabremos quien ha sido el jugador más en forma de los tres primeros futures del año en Mallorca ya que Pedro lleva dos finales y Pablo uno ganado.

El segundo set en Australia ha sido visto y no visto para Djokovic 6/2. Jordi Arrese que esta comentando el partido en Eurosport junto con mi amigo Manolo Poyan achaca el bajón de Murray a su físico y a su bajo porcentaje de primeros, yo no lo comparto en su totalidad, tuve la oportunidad de trabajar unos meses en la Lawn Tennis Association en Londres y creo que precisamente allí, se da demasiado importancia al físico y se protege demasiado a los jugadores mentalmente, apartándolos demasiado rápido de la pista sin que consigan afrontar lo que más les cuesta de su tenis. Yo atribuyo este abultado marcador más, al buen nivel de juego de Djokovick y a la debilidad mental del jugador Escoces cuando las cosas se tuercen o se le complican.

Respeto a la pregunta que se hacen muchos aficionados españoles, de si hay sucesión en el tenis Español después de Nadal, Ferrer, Almagro, Ferrero, Moya, Verdasco, Robredo, Montañés, López, Granollers, García, ….. Yo creo que la hay, por supuesto que la hay, otra cosa es que no comparta como se están haciendo las cosas para favorecer que esta sucesión sea mejor y pueda igualar e incluso superar la actual, pero profundizar ahora en ello me desviaría demasiado de la temática de este Post, lo dejaré para otro.

Prefiero comentarles como he visto esta sucesión en estos primeros Futures del año en Mallorca. Pablo Carreño (nacido en el 91) que va 5 iguales en la final que esta disputando ahora con Pedro Clar (nacido en el 86) lo he visto muy firme y ganando partidos con autoridad empezó en el segundo Future de Mallorca lo ganó y de momento sigue invicto en su décimo partido del año. Javier Martí (nacido en el 92) cada vez que lo veo ha dado un paso más, pude verle ganar la primera semana en la final a Pedro Clar en un bonito y duro partido, en el segundo Future perdió en cuartos con una de las promesas francesas que lleva unos años estancado Eyserric y esta semana lo vi con “Guti” perdió pero horas antes había remontado un partido que perdía 2/5 con Carlos Poch. A Pedro Clar lo veo muy serio, más agresivo, con 15 partidos ya a sus espaldas aspecto que le da mucha confianza y lo convierte en muy peligroso, hay que recordar que en el año 2007, año en el que Pedro progreso más en la clasificación (1.153 a 430 ATP) disputó 113 partidos, de seguir así dará el salto para consolidarse en los challengers como lo ha logrado en los futures.

Guillermo Olaso (nacido en el 88) y “Guti” (nacido en el 89) han iniciado el año en Auckland y en Australia disputando previas y han venido a disputar el 3er future los he visto mejorar aun más en sus tiros, en su físico pero con falta de partidos y cuando sumen partidos ganarán torneos de un nivel superior. Carlos Boluda (nacido en el 93) que también solo ha venido a jugar la tercera semana habría que darle todo el tiempo del mundo para que vaya haciendo su camino en este maratón ATP más difícil de lo que la gente se imagina.

Otros jugadores que han pasado estas semanas por Mallorca como Gerard Granollers (nacido en el 88), Vivanco (nacido en el 90), Coll (nacido en el 87, de vuelta después de su paso por el quirófano) hay que tenerlos en mente y en cualquier momento del año darán que hablar. Luego están los de más arriba que han jugado torneos superiores este mes de Enero como Riba, Ramos y Bautista (nacidos en el 88) 70, 126, y 174 ATP y finalmente quiero también mencionar a Cervantes (nacido en el 89) y Boje (nacido en el 88) se están recuperando de unas lesiones y en breve seguirán compitiendo por cumplir su sueño.

6/3 Djokovic, Campeón Australia 2011, muy buen nivel el de Novak que recupera el número dos ATP y que pasa a ser ya coleccionista de Grand Slams como comenta Manolo Poyan en Eurosport. Enhorabuena Novak !!!!

7/5 6/1 para Pedro Clar, Enhorabuena Pedro y Tomi Arias (coach) por la victoria (A la tercera va la vencida), por el inmejorable inicio del año y por el buen trabajo. Recuerdo un post mío de hace unas semanas recordando los buenos inicios de temporada después de una dura pretemporada en Diciembre. No quiero olvidarme de Pere Joan March, el preparador físico de Pedro desde el 2006, gran profesional y gran amigo y del que siempre aprendo algo. Sin duda Pedro el jugador más en forma en este inicio de año en Mallorca. Mucha suerte!!!

Hello again , sharing thoughts and feelings with all of you, I had already looking forward, just coming from the Airport leaving Sergio Gutiérrez "Guti" and his colleague of trainings Rafael Mazón who have been playing the third "Future" of Mallorca.

In Front of my house TV set ,enjoying the end of the first Grand Slam of the year the Australia Open ,between, Djokovic and Murray, Serbian has just won the first set 6/4, and attempting my blackberry because in Palma Nova now actually playing the final of the Future between the former player Passion Talent Group Pedro Clar and the young Pablo Carreño.

At the end of the post we will have a new Australia champion and also knowing who will be the more in shape player of the three Futures of 2011 in Mallorca Pedro played two finals and Pablo won one tournament.

The second set in Australia has been , see and not seen for Djokovic 6/2. Jordi Arrese is commenting the match at Eurosport alongside my friend Manolo Poyan, he things that the downturn of Murray is because the Andy physical conditions and the low percentage of first services, I do not share it entirely, I had the opportunity to work a few months at the lawn tennis association in London and I believe that precisely there, they works too much physical and players are protected a lot mentally, moving away them too fast from court, in that way players do not achieve what it is more difficult to afford of their tennis in court. Se abre el telón a seguir soñando / Opens the curtain to keep dreaming

De nuevo al ruedo, un trabajo sin tregua, le pregunte a Rafael Nadal el día de noche buena donde celebraría el fin de año y su respuesta fue clara, “Colombo el 31 por la noche yo ya habré jugado un partido de esta nueva temporada”.

Así es nuestro sueño, yo como la mayoría de los que lo tenemos el día 1 ya estaba de nuevo en la pista para empezar una nueva década, mi tercera en lo que profesionalmente se refiere con la misma ilusión que la primera.

Si hay algo que me hace especial ilusión a parte de que los jugadores a los que ha ayudado, ayuda y ayude en un futuro Passion Talent Group mejoren y esto les permita cosechar muchos éxitos y dedicarse a conseguirlos o a intentarlo el mayor tiempo posible; es compartir desde este blog momentos, vivencias, reflexiones, …, con todos Vds. como vengo haciendo desde el pasado mes de marzo.

Y por eso debo mencionar que hay algo que me dice que las cosas no las estamos haciendo bien en el mundo del tenis o a lo mejor si y sencillamente es este afán inconformista de que todo se puede mejorar.

Lo cierto es que la ilusión es clave, así me lo ha repetido muchas veces Toni Nadal, “Toni esto es un tema de ilusión, en la competición o se trabaja por ilusión o mejor no trabajar, esto es un sin sentido y la ilusión es lo único que le da sentido”

Y precisamente es esto lo que más me preocupa que perdamos esta predisposición a dar mucho para conseguir nuestros sueños y la cambiemos por otros hábitos o rutinas. Un jugador con el que colaboro me decía hace muy poco “Colombo esto es como una raza pero esta en peligro de extinción”

Desde aquí quiero agradecer a todos estos jugadores, padres, entrenadores, organizadores, medios de comunicación, patrocinadores que pertenecen a esta raza y que al menos hasta el día de hoy han mantenido, mantienen y ojala mantengan la ilusión por conseguir unos sueños tan bonitos como son mejorar, educar, ayudar, organizar, divulgar, arropar....

Si seremos capaces el tiempo lo dirá aunque si tengo muy claro es que como nos dediquemos o se dediquen las empresas, instituciones, negocios, ... a exprimir al máximo a este gremio de fantasiosos, arriesgados, locos, desorganizados, fanáticos,... en peligro de desaparición otro gallo cantará.

Pero como otras veces digo "más vale que nos atemos las alpargatas antes que esperar a que nos alfombren el mundo". No permitamos que la cuerda se rompa.

And for that I should mention that there is something that tells me that the things we are not doing well in the world of tennis or maybe Yes, and it is simply this Maverick desire that everything can be improved.

The truth is that the illusion is the key, so Toni Nadal often has repeated to me , "Toni this is a theme of illusion in the competition or you work by illusion or better not working, this is a no sense and the illusion is the only thing that gives sense"

And exactly this is what I am most concerned that we lose this predisposition to give much to achieve our dreams and change other habits or routines. A player that I help told me recently "Colombo this is like a race but is in danger of extinction"

From here I want to thank all those players, parents, coaches, organizers, media, sponsors that they belong to this race until today have maintained, kept and perhaps keep the illusion to get some dreams so beautiful as are to improve, educate, help, organize, disseminate....

If we were able time will tell , but what I have very clear is that us or engaged companies, institutions, business,... to squeeze the most to this fantastic Union, of risky, crazy, disorganized, fanatics,... endangered another Rooster will sing.

Last week, while organising some papers I found the interview and I thought it would be nice to share the information with all of you.

Which season do you prefer? Summer.

Which is the happiest day of your life? Is coming.

And the saddest one? When my grandparents had a heart operation.... I had a very bad experience because I knew I could lose them.

The biggest mistake of your career is... that I have understood the most important things a bit late.

The greatest success has been.... not to give up.

A proverb? “If the seagulls follow the boat there must be sardines”.

An obsession? I do not leave anything on the plate when I eat. I clean it as much as possible.

A vice? The Play Station.

Any weakness? Chocolate.

On 24th December, meat or fish? Fish.

Polvorones or mantecados? Polvorones. (typical Spanish sweets at Christmas)

A flaw? I am too stubborn.

A film? Gladiator and Braveheart.

A song? "Self Esteem"

A beverage? Coca Cola

Do you have a sports nickname? They call me "Topo" (mole in Spanish).

What are those who irritate you? People who think they are above the rest. And terrorists as well.

Who is the funniest player you've ever met? Agustín Boje, an Andalusian fellow. He knows all the tricks.

What is the most difficult shot you've seen in a tennis court? Rafael Nadal's passing shots.

What is the most important point you've won? A backhand passing shot in the final of the Future of Mexico.

And the most beautiful one? When I made a backhand volley in the Spain Championships.

Have you ever felt miserable when playing against any opponent? I don’t think so.

What are the most significant memories of your career? The championships of Spain, a European medal and the Futures I have won

The best player at the moment is ... Rafael Nadal.

Diciembre, un mes muy epecial / December, A Very Special Month

Diciembre es el mes de pre-temporada. Es muy buen momento para mirarse detenidamente al espejo y analizar los propósitos: tanto los marcados para la temporada ya finalizada como los de la temporada que está por venir. Se trata de reforzar todo lo que ha funcionado e intentar mejorar lo que nos puede haber perjudicado y como no podía ser de otra manera “cargar las pilas” (somos oscilantes no lineales) para empezar la próxima campaña con más fuerza e ilusión que nunca.

Este mes, además, nos permite trabajar a conciencia en todos los aspectos que nos aproximan a nuestra misión sin la presión inmediata de iniciar un torneo en breve. Diciembre me trae muy buenos recuerdos y el de este año es distinto al de estos últimos pues no estoy haciendo pre-temporada con ningún jugador pero sí la estoy haciendo conmigo mismo. Intento esforzarme al máximo en beneficio del desarrollo del joven proyecto Passion Talent Group, haciendo lo que sobre todo durante el diciembre de los últimos 4 años hice (trabajo, trabajo y más trabajo) al dirigir full time junto con el preparador físico Pere Joan March la pre-temporada del grupo de jugadores con los que más he aprendido (Nacho Coll, Agustín Boje, Pedro Clar, Pablo Martín y Andoni Vivanco) y que tan buenos y satisfactorios resultados a estos jugadores les dio y que confío que le dará a Passion Talent Group.

Antes de esos años también recuerdo muy buenos y bonitos momentos de la pre-temporada que viví de cerca con Rafael Nadal allá por diciembre de 2003. Ese año pude organizarme y tomarme unas semanas de vacaciones en la Escola Balear de l´Esport para dar una mano a Joan Forcades, preparador físico de Rafael Nadal, que había sido intervenido entonces de una lesión y también pude incluso en algún momento intentar poner a prueba al propio Rafael en algún Farlek en duras sesiones de running por Porto Colom, Sa Coma e incluso por la avenida que hay frente el Tenis Manacor. No hace falta seguramente que les cuente cual fue el resultado de estos intentos por picarle. Un año más tarde, diciembre de 2004, Rafael ganó con el equipo español su primera ensaladera de la Davis en Sevilla frente a más de 25.000 espectadores. Sólo con este dato, ya se lo pueden imaginar, la verdad que poco tenía que hacer retando a Rafa.

Lo que sentí aquellos días cuando le vi por televisión (me encontraba en unos Futures que anteriormente se jugaban en Orense y Baiona en esa fechas y que por cierto los ganó nada más y nada menos que Andy Murray a las órdenes en aquellos tiempos de Wilian “Pato” Álvarez). Fue muy emocionante y me parecía increíble que en un año Rafael se hubiese convertido ya en un ídolo para mucha gente y ya tenía en su palmarés un trofeo tan preciado por muchos y que muy pocos han conseguido. Rafa era ya un jugador precoz pues pasó de realizar duras pero divertidas sesiones de físico a poder aparecer en la pequeña pantalla batiendo récords. Esto me parecía maravilloso.

A lo largo de los últimos años he podido vivir y gracias a esto aprender mucho de estas pre-temporadas. Toni Nadal nos invitaba casi a diario a que los jugadores anteriormente nombrados, Nacho en muchísimas ocasiones y Agustín, Pedro, Pablo y Andoni hicieran de sparrings para Rafael. Allí entendí y me imagino que también Rafael Maimo (fisioterapeuta de Nadal) presente en todas sus sesiones, de lo importante que es mantener la intensidad física en las duras sesiones, la tensión y concentración mental que se debe respirar en cada una de ellas (mayoritariamente si se puede decir de alguna manera impuesto con el buen sentido de la palabra por Toni Nadal). Además se percibe la insistencia que te da el espíritu deportivo para tratar de mejorar una y otra vez y destinar gran parte de la energía a afrontar lo que más le cuesta a uno hasta llegar a superarse con el único propósito de ganar más partidos que el año anterior.

Todo este esfuerzo (espiritual, mental, emocional y físico) es lo que intenté que se mantuviera en las sesiones de tarde ya a solas con (Nacho, Agus, Pedro, Pablo o Andoni) o en las que Toni Nadal no nos convocaba. Puse también un gran empeño para determinar el patrón de juego que debía caracterizar a cada uno de ellos y alinear los valores personales de cada uno para llegar lo más lejos posible en sus carreras como tenistas.

Miro atrás y vivo estos momentos con mucho cariño y alegría y me encanta refrescar mi memoria y visualizar cómo empezó el año en 2007. Lo hizo con Pedro Clar ganando en Calviá a jugadores antes impensables de ganar como Santi Ventura. Por otro lado, Nacho Coll en enero de 2008 en Menorca también ganó muy buenos partidos con autoridad a Viloca, Dimitrov y perdió con Carlos Poch en tres duras mangas, aunque le ganó la semana siguiente en Cala Millor. Andoni Vivanco en enero de 2009 ganó su primer Future partiendo de la fase previa y se hizo con el trofeo después de un partido infernal con un resultado de 5/7 7/6 7/6 frente a Dustin Brown.

Esto mismo es lo que intento cada día de este diciembre actual (primera pre-temporada) del proyecto Passion Talent Group. Procuro sentar unas bases sólidas manteniendo la intensidad y concentración en cada reunión, negociación, elaboración de un borrador o acuerdo sin dejar de pensar en ningún momento en la manera de superar lo anterior y trabajar para ello con un objetivo claro: ayudar a los jugadores a conseguir sus sueños deportivos.

Me gustaría acabar el post hoy con un dicho ‹‹la prosperidad hace amigos y la adversidad la pone a prueba››. Lo que más me enorgullece de estas pre-temporadas es que, a pesar de las adversidades que siempre hay en estas situaciones difíciles en las que uno intenta superarse y para empezar visionar la verdad, la amistad tanto entre nosotros como hacia el tenis sigue intacta. Todos ellos siguen amigos del tenis, su ilusión, a pesar de ser un difícil sueño y seguimos tan amigos como siempre y además seguro que con muy buenos recuerdos de estas magníficas pre-temporadas.

December is the month of pre-season. It is a very good time to look ourselves closely at the mirror and analyze the purposes, both set for the season already finished as those purposes for the season that is coming. We need to strengthen what has worked well and try to improve those things which have been more difficult and, how could it be otherwise "recharge batteries" (humans are oscillating non lineal) in order to start next season with more strength and enthusiasm than ever.

This month also allows us to work in every aspect conscientiously, so as we get closer to our target, without the immediate pressure of starting a tournament soon. December brings me good memories and this year is different from the past because I am not doing a pre-season training with any player but I am doing my own preparation. I try to do my best in behalf of the development of the Passion Talent Group project. I am doing what I especially did in December the last four years (work, work and more work) when I run the pre-season training with the coach Pere Joan March. I worked full time with the group of players which I have learned most (Nacho Coll, Agustín Boje, Pedro Clar, Pablo Martín and Andoni Vivanco) and how good and satisfactory results were given to these players and I hope that will give to Passion Talent Group.

Before those years I also remember very good and beautiful moments of the pre-season I lived with Rafael Nadal back in December 2003. This year I have organized myself and I could take a few weeks off in order to help Joan Forcades at Escola Balear de l'Esport. Forcades is Rafael Nadal's physical trainer and he had an injury when I had the chance to test Rafael in a tough Farlek in running sessions around Porto Colom, Sa Coma and even the avenue that is in front of the Manacor Tennis Club. Certainly I do not need to tell you what was the result of these attempts to push Rafa. A year later, December 2004, Rafael together with the Spanish team won the first Davis Cup in Seville in front of over 25,000 spectators. Only with this information, as you can imagine, I had little to challenge to Rafa.

I was very happy those days when I saw him on television (I was in Orense and Bayonne where two Futures were taking place and certainly won by nothing more and nothing less than Andy Murray at the orders of Wilian "Pato" Alvarez). It was very exciting and I could not believe that in a year Rafael had become an idol for many people and already had such an important trophy under his belt so prized by many players and very few have succeeded. Rafa was already a precocious player when he rose from making tough but fun physical sessions to appear on the small screen breaking records. This sounds wonderful to me.

Throughout the past years I have lived and learnt a lot from these pre-season training. Toni Nadal invited us almost every day to the previously mentioned players, Nacho many times and Agustín, Pedro, Pablo and Andoni had a few training sessions with Rafael. I understood and I guess so did Rafael Maimo (Nadal’s physiotherapist) attendee at all the coaching sessions, how important it is to maintain the physical intensity in those hard sessions, but stress and mental concentration are also very important in each of those sessions (if you can say in a way imposed with good sense by Toni Nadal). Besides we felt the insistence due to the spirit of competitiveness when players try to improve more and more and devote much energy in order to tackle or try to afford all the costs they must pay in order to reach the sole purpose of winning more matches than the year before.

All this effort (spiritual, mental, emotional and physical) is what I tried to keep in the afternoon sessions when I was alone with Nacho, Agus, Pedro, Pablo or Andoni, or when Toni Nadal did not call us. I put too much effort in order to determine the pattern of play that should characterize each of them and align personal values in order to go as far as possible in their careers as players.

I look back now and I remember those happy and joyful memories and I enjoy to refresh my memory and I look back to how the year 2007 started. It happened with Pedro Clar beating inconceivable (meaning very good) players such as Santi Ventura in a tournament in Calvià. On the other hand, Nacho Coll in Menorca in January 2008 also won very good matches against Viloca, Dimitrov and lost to Carlos Poch in three tough sets, but he beat him the following week at Cala Millor. Andoni Vivanco in January 2009 won his first Future coming from the qualifiers and won the final against Dustin Brown by 5/7 7/6 7/6. What an infernal match that was.

All of this is what I try to do every day of December, Passion Talent Group’s first pre-season. I try to lay a solid foundation in order to maintain the intensity and concentration at each meeting, negotiation or preparation of a draft agreement while thinking at any point in how to overcome this and work for it with a clear objective: to help players achieve their sporting dreams.

I would like to finish the post today with a saying "prosperity makes friends and adversity proofs it". What I am most proud of this pre-season is that, despite the adversities there always are in these difficult situations in which we always try to overcome and to start viewing the truth, friendship among ourselves and to tennis remains intact. All of them are friends of tennis, their aspiration, despite being a difficult dream we are good friends and I am sure that we still have very good memories of these great pre-seasons.
