More Staffordshire firms are needed for a pioneering apprenticeship programme creating much-needed employment for young people, and helping businesses make the most of social media marketing.

Interested companies are invited to find out more on Friday, January 27, at the Roman Way Hotel in Cannock.

SSC Learning from Hednesford and Passionate Media, based in Bridgtown, have joined forces to offer the apprenticeship scheme which is about to begin its second programme of trainees.

Training specialists SSC Learning are now looking for local businesses interested in taking on an apprentice to handle their digital marketing. Throughout their apprenticeship, the young people will receive training and support from media specialists, Passionate Media.

The first round of eleven apprentices, who are aged 16-19, were taken on in September, and are already achieving great results for their employers. Each of their places cost around £2,500 to £4,500, and are funded by the Government’s Skills Funding Agency.

The apprentices and their employers, along with representatives from SSC and Passionate Media are holding a presentation to businesses on January 13, to help show interested firms just how much can be gained by taking on an apprentice.

The second programme, which commenced in early January, has 15 new apprentices now seeking employers, six of whom are aged between 19 and 24.

“We didn't want to continue excluding keen 20-somethings, just because the funding is linked to age – the older apprentices have so much to offer,” explained Ian Shephard, managing co-director of SSC.

“We decided instead to raise the group size, which would allow us to accommodate a third of the group as 19 to 24-year-olds. We think this will be of even greater benefit to employers, as we feel the older candidates will bring a maturity to the group dynamic, and lead the way in terms of their attitude to studying and business.”

Mr Shephard explained that news of the success of the first group of apprentices is already proving a help in recruiting young people for future programmes, and hopes there will be a similar effect on businesses, once they have seen what can be achieved.

“We're finding that apprentices are being referred to us by the Young Peoples’ Service, and by one another. Word-of-mouth is starting to build, and we are confident the same will apply amongst employers as the momentum of the programme starts to build,” he said.

“We are now actively seeking more South Staffordshire employers to become involved, and again, are confident once they have spoken to our apprentices, and to employers who are now reaping the rewards of having become part of the programme, that we are going to see a huge rise in demand from firms wanting to take on apprentices of their own.”

Firms interested in finding out more about the social media marketing apprenticeships are invited along to the presentation on Friday January 27th, which is being held at the Roman Way Hotel on the A5, from 12.00 noon. The presentation, which will include testimonials from existing apprentices, and their employers, will begin at 12.30 pm and will be followed by a complimentary buffet. All of the new apprentices will be present, and hoping to speak to prospective employers, along with their trainers.

An innovative Midlands artist offering customers a ‘home-made’ Christmas has been making the most of the opportunity given to her when she won a rent-free shop at Birmingham’s The Square shopping centre.

Craftsperson Cassandra Jovic from Moseley says the credit crunch, and shoppers’ desire to give something truly unique this year has given her business, Crunched Gifts, a huge boost.

She was given the chance to cash in on the festive period after winning a competition earlier in the year, run by the Square shopping centre, to run a pop-up shop in the city centre location, rent-free until Christmas.

Cassandra and jeweller, Will Cutler, from Yoxall in Staffordshire, who runs F7 Jewellery, won over judges with their vision, passion and commitment, and have been sharing a unit in The Square since November.

The 26-year-old gave up a job with the City Council to pursue a more creative career, and believes the current climate is just right for crafts to make a serious comeback, as her success with the pop-up shop has proven.

“With Christmas coming, everyone’s feeling "crunched" and buying presents with little money is harder than ever,” she said.

“People have really been going for the idea of making their own gifts, and our craft packs have been really popular,” she said.

“As well as helping save money, giving a hand-made present is also extra special because love has gone into its creation, and as many of my items are recycled or vintage, they are much more environmentally-friendly too.”

Cassandra stocks a weird and wonderful range of goods, including knitted scarves and beanie hats, vintage cake stands, baking biscuits, customisable handbags and tea pot lamps.

The self-taught artist also runs workshops, to help show people how enjoyable and practical craft-making is, from knitting to card-making and paper crafts, and is writing a blog about the whole experience.

“My craft workshops have also been really popular, for people of all ages, and knitting particularly is in vogue. I’ve had lots of interest in my introduction to knitting classes.

“I think people are trying to be a bit more thrifty this Christmas. Also, programmes like Kirsty Allsop’s Homemade Britain are encouraging people to do something a bit more unique and imaginative, which has been great for me.

“The majority of the products in my shop are created using everyday products in unusual ways and where possible I use vintage and recycled products,” she explained.

As well as sharing a unit in the Square Shopping Centre until Christmas, the fledgling retailers have also been receiving mentoring from established shopkeepers and support from the centre’s management team.

The centre launched the competition earlier this year to help give an aspiring retailer a step up the career ladder with a pop-up shop, at a time when cash flow and budgets are tighter than ever.

Will, aged 22, who studied Metalwork and jewellery at Sheffield Hallam university, graduating in 2010, said the jewellery market is extremely hard to break into for new graduates, unless employed by a large company.

His love of making things stems from helping his grandfather, an automotive engineer, and he is using his opportunity to help other craftspeople too.

“It’s very difficult to become an established designer/maker, which is why I started working on F7 properly a few months ago – it’s a new service for up and coming or graduate designer/makers in the jewellery and silver-smithing industry, and hopefully in the future, will include other crafts too,” he explained.

“We plan to help designers by offering them three ways to market their products – online retail, events, and concession stands in retail and luxury outlets.

“Winning this opportunity for a pop-up shop in Birmingham has helped me so much – as well as raising much-needed capital to get my company started properly, I wanted to see if a pop-up shop would be suitable to sell jewellery – I think I’ve proven that it is.”

Yvonne Moulton, manager at The Square said she had been overwhelmed by the enterprise and imagination of the two winners, and feels they’ve added a special edge to shopping at The Square this Christmas.

“We held the competition to help get some fresh, innovative new businesses off the ground at a particularly tough time for retailers,” she said.

“Will’s business not only offers some unique and imaginative new products to our customers, but is also about helping other young artists boost their careers, which is wonderfully enterprising.

“We loved the idea of Cassandra’s shop, and are delighted it’s doing so well at this time of year, offering some fabulous present ideas. Her products are witty, unique and thoughtful - both winners have been wonderful additions to our retailers.”

The city centre hotel is hoping their support will help prolong the unbeaten run of Rawcliffe FC’s under-19 football team and keep them at the top of the table.

The Park Inn by Radisson York has provided the team with training tops, and is allowing the 15-strong squad to train free-of-charge at the hotel’s impressive gym facilities on a Saturday.

The team, which currently tops the York Mitchell Sports Under-19 Football League, hopes to work on their stamina, using the cardio equipment at the Innaction gym at the hotel in North Street, York.

Assistant manager, Graham Ward, whose wife, son and mother all work at the Park Inn, said the sponsorship has given the team a great boost, in a season when they are already flying high.

“We’re really grateful to the Park Inn - getting this kind of support really gives everyone a bit more encouragement to work harder and make sure we continue our success” he said.

“The training tops will be essential as the weather gets colder, as will the chance to use the gym to help us build on our fitness.”

Carol Ward, who is marketing co-ordinator at the Park Inn, said the hotel is pleased to be able to contribute to the success of Rawcliffe under-19s, and all the staff are throwing their support behind the team.

“We’re delighted to be involved in such a great community club as Rawcliffe, and as a company, are keen to support local community organisations and events as much as we can.

“We all wish the under-19s all the best, and hope our support will help them continue to build on their successful start to the season.”

Each year, the Minster Lions take Santa and his sleigh along to the event, to hand out sweets to the youngsters and help collect money to fund their charity work.

Staff from the Park Inn by Radisson – already a is a big supporter of the organisation, providing free meeting rooms for the Lions each month to help them organise their fundraising activities – hopes to offer more encouragement helping the Lions' collection.

The hotel in North Street has already had a visit from the sleigh back in August, as Minster members prepared for the host of events they attend throughout November and December to raise funds to help a wide range of organisations and individuals across York.

St Nicholas Fayre is always a highlight of the festive calendar in York, as the city comes alive with traders clad in Victorian costumes, carol singers, and wonderful Christmas aromas, sights and sounds. It attracts many thousands of visitors, making it one of the biggest events for the Lions’ collectors.

“I know the city is swamped with tourists and residents alike over the Fayre weekend, which is great news for the Lions, as Santa and his sleigh are always a huge attraction,” said Carol Ward, marketing co-ordinator at the Park Inn by Radisson.

“As we see it, the more hands they have helping, the more money they are able to collect, so we are happy to pitch in.

“We’re sending along staff during the hours around lunchtime, which are the busiest times, and we really hope we can help them raise even more money than in previous years.”

Hotel staff will join the Minster Lions collectors on Saturday, November 26, from around 11am, as the crowds start to pour through Kings Square.

Last year, sleigh appearances during November and December raised more than £4,000. Minster Lions president Alec Williamson is confident they will do as well this year, and said he was grateful for the extra help at such a busy time.

“The Fayre is one of the highlights of the year, and gives our Christmas collection a real boost, so we are delighted that staff from the Park Inn have offered to lend a hand,” he said.

Onkar Sunner, who owns OSS Car Sales Ltd in Wednesfield Road, said though only 39, a serious bout of appendicitis left him thinking about how he would cope if he had a life-threatening illness, and his thoughts turned to Compton Hospice.

“Thankfully, I have never had to use them, but after being ill myself, it really made me think about what’s important to me, and how I can do more to help others,” he said.

Mr Sunner is offering a new car scrappage scheme, and has pledged to give Compton Hospice a donation for every car he scraps.

“I don’t care what condition the car is in – I will come and pick them up if they’re not driveable, and I will give a donation to Compton for every car I pick up and scrap,” he said.

“The higher the value I get for the car, the more I will be able to donate, so I hope that by offering a service to others, we can help generate some money for Compton, to allow them to offer help to people who really need it.”

Anyone with an old car to scrap is asked to call Mr Sunner on 07725 428283 to arrange to drop-off the vehicle, or have it collected if needed.

As you know, over here at Passionate Media, we love to tell you about amazing people who have raised money for charity and we are delighted to report that a Rugeley estate agent took to his bike and cycled 140km to help raise £1,500 for a charity which had cared for one of his staff during a serious illness.

Jason Dibble, partner at Chase Independent, trained for more than six months in preparation for the Prostate Cancer Charity Tour Ride 2011, which took him all around Staffordshire on a single day.

The 40-year-old was spurred on by the care his sales negotiator, Mike Kelly, had received courtesy of the charity, when he fell ill with prostate cancer almost three years ago.

Mr Kelly, now aged 63, underwent radical prostectomy surgery at North Staffordshire Hospital, followed by a course of radiation treatment. He is now in remission, receiving annual check-ups to chart his progress.

Mr Dibble, who runs the business with wife, Michele, said he had been in awe of the treatment and care Mike received, for a disease which affects so many men, and which can be so devastating if not caught in time.

“I turned 40 in February and wanted to do something to mark it that would test me, but help do some good too,” he explained.

“Mike undoubtedly went through hell with cancer, but thanks to the Prostate Cancer Charity, he got through it, and thankfully, has his life back. I want to thank staff, customers, family and friends who have all been so generous and supportive, and helped me raise so much.”

Mr Kelly, who lives in Hixon with his wife, Janet, has worked at Chase Independent for four years.

“The support I received from the team at Chase Independent was amazing and I can’t express how grateful I am for that help, which didn’t just get me through this, but Janet too,” he said.

A keen actor before his illness, Mr Kelly has appeared in a number of programmes as an extra, and is now looking forward to resuming his acting again.

“I’m thrilled Jason helped raise so much money. These events provide funds that really do help to save lives, and just raising awareness of this disease, and warning men to get checked out, is a huge boost to the charity,” he added.

A young singer from Great Wyrley is dreaming
of hitting the big time after making it through to the regional finals of a
national talent competition.

Holly Evans, from Fairoaks Drive, will be performing at the the NEC on October 29 in a live showcase, after getting
through the audition rounds of Open Mic UK 2011.

The former Great Wyrley High School
pupil will be hoping to win a place in the national final of the competition,
which is looking for the UK’s best singers, rappers and vocalists, from all
genres.

If successful, Holly could be heading
to the 02 in London and the chance to grab a breakthrough recording contract.

Holly will be performing live
alongside the best talent in the area, in front of hundreds of audience members
and a professional judging panel.

Chris Grayston, head of Future Music,
said thousands of hopefuls had entered the competition nationally, and a very
high standard has already been set.

“We are searching for an act whose
live performance will impress an audience, industry judges and A&R associates,
and who has the potential to become a professional recording artist,” he said.

“The standard was high last year and
this year looks set to be even better.”

Holly, who made it through to the Boot
Camp stage of the last series of X-Factor, will be competing in the 17-22 age
category.

There's over £50, 000 in prizes up for
grabs this year and the overall winner of Open Mic UK2011 will be offered a
recording contract, with up to £30, 000 investment, and the chance to tour the
UK.

By Terri-Anne Whitehouse

A new fun project tapping into kids' creativity is helping ease a humanitarian crisis in East Africa.

The project is called Kids Draw for East Africa and organisers are calling on parents to donate paintings and drawings by their (primary school age) children, to be auctioned online to willing grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends. They're hoping to raise £2,000 in six weeks.

One of the brains behind the imaginative scheme, Charlotte Hillenbrand, said: "The kids can draw absolutely anything, we're not being prescriptive about subject etc. -- much more fun to see what they come up with. But what we really need now is drawings and paintings from kids that their parents are happy to see auctioned online. Hopefully the parents will also encourage their relatives to bid!"

I spent time looking at the pictures today and thought it was a great way of getting children involved with such an important charity.

Did you know every six minutes a child dies of starvation in East Africa? Can you believe that? Every six minutes. It’s hard to even grasp the thought that that’s even happening in today’s world, and more than 12 million people are at risk.

50/50 for those of you who don’t know, is like a digital Live Aid- pulling together fundraising on the internet to raise money for the famine crisis in East Africa.

They started six weeks ago with the aim of launching 50 web based fundraising projects in just 50 days ready by the UN’s World Food Day on Sunday 16 October to raise an incredible £1 million for Unicef’s famine aid, but now it’s about spreading the word to help and donate. So they need all the help they can get to reach their goal and save the children in Africa from this terrible event that’s going on. We can help, we can change the future for the families in need.

50/50 are very proud to be partnering with Unicef as their official Aid Collection partner. All of the money you donate to a 50/50 project goes direct to Unicef. In East Africa Unicef is currently delivering life-saving support in health and nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene and child protection, and your money or help will go a massive way in protecting and saving these families. Nobody deserves to be in pain like this.

50/50 was first hatched by Good for Nothing and Made by Many about six weeks ago. A tweet to Good for Nothing from Virgin Unite started the ball rolling, a few Skype conversations, followed by some emails and a couple of beers later resulted in a crowd sourced call for ideas, a hack weekend and several late nights and weekends juggling in between paid/client work.
