When someone reads your blog their first reaction should not be, “Who talks like that!” If you are using the thesaurus every time you write a post and add words that you would never use if you were speaking face-to-face with a friend its time for a little lesson. Blogging is a conversation and I have some tips to help you connect with your readers on a more personal level by learning the art of conversational blogging.

Blogging and talk radio have a lot in common

On my radio show I talk to many callers each day. Blogging may seem different than doing a radio show but really its not. Callers respond, get fired up, and want to call the show and join in on the conversation. Blog readers might not hear your voice with their ears, but they get a feel for who you are by the words you use and the style you write.

When I write the opening monologue I am going to use on my radio show I read it out loud to make sure it sounds like a real conversation. When you read something on air (unless you are a 20 year professional) it sounds like you are reading. There is an art to reading something out loud and making it sound like you are not reading and if you want to be successful in radio and blogging you need to master this art.

When I write a blog post I read it out loud before I ever hit the publish button. If the post does not sound like a conversation I would have with a friend then I rewrite the post until it seems like a perfectly natural conversation. Your friends don’t want you to read the encyclopedia to them when you are talking to each other and neither do the readers of your blog. Write like you speak and you’ll find your readers responding to you like you are their best friend.

Ask questions?

Do you ask your readers questions that they feel compelled to respond to?

This is an old radio trick. I start each hour of my show with a question that has to do with what I we will be talking about that hour and it helps to get the listeners thinking about how they would answer the question. The next 15 minutes of my radio show I outline a story and add a personal story about how I relate to the story and why the story is important for them. I give the listener a feeling of why I am personally passionate about the story and then ask some additional questions of the audience about how they personally relate to the story, their insights, and to call me because I really want to hear their views and opinions on the topic we are discussing.

The last 15 to 30 minutes of the hour I take phone calls from passionate listeners. If you have done your job right as a talk radio show host or a blogger the phone lines or comment section of your blog lights up with callers and comments. Wouldn’t you like to get hundreds of comments on a story you have just posted to your blog? Do you ask your readers questions? I’d love to hear from you on your successes with asking readers questions and some of the amazing responses you have received.

A conversation is a two way street

There are very few bloggers and radio talk show hosts that can spend everyday talking without taking callers or responding to comments. Do you want your readers to feel like you are out of their league and they are wasting your time writing comments on your blog that you will never respond to? If you want readers to use some of their valuable time commenting on your blog then the conversation must be a two way street.

When a reader takes the time to comment on your blog then you respond to their comment this is a great way to get hundreds of comments and great way of making new friends online. How long would you talk to a person that ignored you, wouldn’t make eye contact, and acts like you do not exist? Chances are you would move on and find someone that is actually interested in what you have to say. Same goes for blog readers, they might read your blog, but they learn very quickly whether you are a person they would like to call a friend or whether you are a blow hard that is only interested in yourself.

Are you a conversational blogger?

How do you make your blog posts more conversational? There are many bloggers and new blogger that want to learn how to get more comments, engage their readers, and inspire them to leave comments on their blog. Tell us about some of the ways you make a conversational blog!

One of the questions I get asked most often is, “How do you make money blogging.” Now I’m not a 6 figure blogger (more like a 4 figure blogger on his way to 5 figure blogging.) but I do make a good supplemental income from my blogging activities. Most money making programs don’t make you squat if you are a new blogger or don’t have 1000s of site visitors each day. The short answer to getting started making money blogging is affiliate advertising. If you are looking for an affiliate program that can put some checks in your mailbox becoming a DIYthemes affiliate might just be a great money maker for you.

DIYthemes a great affiliate advertising opportunity

I make some money from Google AdSense, although it is definitely not my best performer. One of my best money making methods is affiliate advertising. If you are looking for affiliate ads for your site then DIYthemes might be a great fit for your blog.

What is DIYthemes

DIYthemes makes possibly the best WordPress blog themes. If you are looking for a killer theme that will get you much search engine love and high fives from blog readers the Thesis Theme for WordPress is definitely right for you.

Why should I become a DIYthemes affiliate?

Do you like money? Do you have a blog or website that you would like to find products that your readers would be interested in? DIYthemes affiliate program can put up to $54 in your pocket each time one of your visitors purchases one of their awesome themes. I don’t know about you but it takes me a while to make $54 with Google AdSense. DIYthemes has the potential of being one of your biggest if not your BIGGEST money makers on your website.

Many affiliate programs are not a good match for your website. If your visitors or readers have a WordPress blog, are thinking of changing their site to WordPress, or they are just starting out as a new blogger the DIYthemes Thesis Theme is just about the best theme they could use on their blog. By becoming a DIYthemes affiliate each time one of your readers gets one of their awesome themes you have a happy reader and a little more green in your bank account.

Find out more about the DIYThemes affiliate program here. And if you want a high-quality template that you can use to improve your blog or website immediately find out more about the Thesis theme here
.

10 passionate ways to make friends online

1. Social Media - Blogs are a great way to make friends online, but it can take a while for your comment to post and for the blog author to respond. Social Media sites such as facebook, twitter, StumbleUpon, Digg, Pownce, Plurk, and del.icio.us make it easy to connect and follow many friends at once. Social media sites are also some of the best places online to find friends that share your interests and hobbies.

I recently signed up for a twitter and Plurk account, within 48 hours of signing up and setting up my profile I had 240+ twitter followers and 68+ friends on Plurk. So in only 48 hours I meet over 280+ potential new friends using Social Media sites.

I would love to be your friend also. If you have accounts at some of the social media sites I listed above put the links to your social media sites in the comments of this post so other Passionate Bloggers can find you and become your friend. I’ll start the ball rolling, here are my social media links.

2. Email Friends - Sometimes you find a blog or a post that really gets you thinking or compels you to ask a question. Why not email the author of the site or post? You just might make a new friend.

Many of the really good blogging friends I have met online started with a simple email. Don’t be intimidated if the person you want to email seems like an online celebrity or to busy to respond to your email. You’ll never know if you could have met a really great friend unless you send that email. In fact you can drop me a line using my Contact Page and you never know we might become great friends.

3. Contact Page - If you want to make online friends they need to be able to contact you. A contact page on your website or blog allows readers and potential new friends to initiate a connection with you.

If you are use WordPress on your blog the Contact Form 7 plugin is a great way to add a contact form to your blog. If you want to see the Contact Form 7 plugin in action checkout my Contact Page and while you are there send me an email and let me know more about you and your passions.

4. Help someone - No matter what you blog about chances are you are an expert on something. Many of the readers of your website are looking for more information or might need a question answered about a topic that you can help them with. Help them. Answer their questions, offer a solution, or just get to know them more. Helping someone is one of the best ways to start a relationship with what could become a true friend.

5. Comments - We all want comments on our blogs. Comments are not a one way street. Readers to your site will stop leaving comments if it seems like you hate your readers by never joining the conversation in the comments of your blog.

Don’t become a blog shut-in and avoid leaving comments on other blogs. Most bloggers love to get new and interesting comments. Read other blogs and join in on the conversation you just might find that there are thousands of new friends just waiting to meet you after reading your comments.

6. Make them famous - If you read a great post like this one link to it. If you meet a really interesting blogger why not interview them or write a review of their site on your blog. The web is built on links. Online relationships can start with a single link. Link up to a new friend today and make them feel famous. More ways to make readers famous.

7. Let readers promote themselves - Do your readers have a great post or blog that they would like to show to the world? Let them. Write a “Promote your blog” post on your website. Ask readers to email a link to their site and/or a post they have written that they think other people might find interesting. Promote the entries on your blog.

If you have written a great post that you would like to share with the readers here at Passionate America contact me or leave a comment below with the link to your passionate post. The top entries will be featured here at Passionate Blogger.

8. Reward friendship - Do you have some extraordinary commentors on your blog? Why not reward them for their contributions by featuring a link to their site on your blog? The Top Commentators plugin for WordPress is a great way to reward your commentors and make great friends.

9. Be personal - We could all just read Wikipedia or mainstream media websites all day long, but the reason most blog readers spend so much time surfing for great blogs is the personal nature of blogs.

When I first started surfing the internet I read many major news websites each day. Those sites always seem to be missing the human being in their stories. I soon learned of blogs and spent most of my time reading and devouring every interesting blog I could find. I sent an email to a blogger that I regularly read and we soon became close friends. A few weeks later because of the advice I received and the love of reading blogs I started my first blog Passionate America. I now have at least 10 blogs and write on many more.

The personal style of blogging inspired me to start a blog of my own and before I knew it, when people asked me what I did for fun my first answer became, “BLOGGING!”

Don’t be afraid to add a personal story in your posts. It helps readers connect with you on a more personal level than any mega corporation website can. And guess what, your personality might just inspire a new friend to drop you a line.

10. Guest Posting - Most of the blogs you read could really use some fresh inspired content and you just might be the person that can help them publish their next great post. If you read a blog on a topic that you have something to say about send the blog owner an email and offer to guest post. The blog owner gets a great post by you and you get to connect with their readers that respond to your guest post. Its a Win-Win situation.

You can also ask for guest posters for your blog. I’ll show you how its done. If you would like to write a guest post here at Passionate Blogger send me an email via my Contact Page with a link to your website and explain the post you would like to write. If it sounds like a great fit, your post could be seen here on the pages of Passionate Blogger. Also you might be interested in me guest posting on your site. See how easy that is. I’ll bet I meet some really interesting people.

Make friends! Leave your social media profile links in the comments and add some new friends to your network.

Simple, write more quality content. Seriously sometimes it takes more than writing quality content to resurrect a dead or dying blog. Take Passionate Blogger as an example. I have not posted on this site for quite a while. Short answer as to why: Family issues. Now that I am in the process of clearing that hurdle the next item on my list is resurrecting my dying blogs.

First things first, a lot has changed since I stopped blogging. WordPress has had several new version releases. Their are tons of emails, comments, and spam to go through and moderate. So I’ll spend sometime this week upgrading everything and giving my blogs some small makeovers.

Second most if not all of my site traffic has disappeared (and who can blame them.) I plan to start using the Blog Points System Excel Spreadsheet again to keep myself on track. It will take time to regain traffic losses on the sites, but I’m ready for the challenge.

Next I am reexamining my life so that my problems will not overwhelm me again. I have to retrain myself on how to be happy again. I am also in the process of some major lifestyle changes that will include raising my income by going outside my home to find a job. My blogging income is a nice bonus, however it does not allow me yet to pay all of my bills and travel as often as I would like.

This is a good start and I have plenty of things on my plate over the next few months. Thanks for returning to Passionate Blogger and I hope you’ll return more and more as I resurrect this blog.

You might have said to yourself, what is Alexa Rank and why should I give a crap? Well I’m here to tell you, if you want more people to read your blog and someday make money blogging, then its time to suck it up and learn about Alexa Rank.

If you have been reading the Give And Receive Series you might have noticed a running theme. It is better to give than receive and in the end your giving will be rewarded. This giving idea fits so perfectly with Alex Rank that you will be blown away with how easy it is to give your way to a higher Alexa Rank. Strap on your passionate helmet as we dive head on into the wonderful world of Alexa with 2 easy steps.

But Alexa Rank Is For Webmasters And Tech Geeks

If you have read anything about Alexa in the past you have most certainly run across the naysayers.

While not necessarily a naysayer DoshDosh has a perfect example of what you might read about Alexa on other websites.

…many have indicated that Alexa is a vastly inaccurate method of measuring a website’s reach, traffic and potential. I don’t disagree.

Alexa is a silly way to measure web traffic but unfortunately, in an imperfect world Alexa is still heavily used by webmasters and ad networks when measuring the value of advertising on your website.

(from their post - 20 Quick Ways to Increase Your Alexa Rank)

I do not disagree with DoshDosh’s take on Alexa. Alexa Rank is not the most perfect way of ranking a website, however if you choose to ignore Alexa you might as well be saying, “I don’t really want to improve my blog and I’d rather have a traditional job instead of improving my online efforts to eventually make a living online!”

If you only have a blog so that you can write posts that 10-50 people will read and think making some money while you practice your passion for blogging is not for you then stop reading now. I truly believe you can find a happy middle ground where you can make money blogging and give your readers content that is not just a sales pitch. Alexa fits into this happy middle ground.

What is Traffic Rank? (in 160 words or less)

From the Alexa website:

The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach). As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis. The main Alexa traffic rank is based on the geometric mean of these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users). The three-month change is determined by comparing the site’s current rank with its rank from three months ago. For example, on July 1, the three-month change would show the difference between the rank based on traffic during the first quarter of the year and the rank based on traffic during the second quarter.

Alexa Makes Giving Easy With The Alexa Toolbar

The Alexa Toolbar makes giving so easy once you have installed it you give each website you visit a vote that helps them get a better Alex Rank (including your website.)

Here is what the Alexa Toolbar looks like for the 2 most popular web-browsers.

Alexa Toolbar for Firefox sneak preview

Alexa Toolbar for Internet Explorer sneak preview

If you still want more information about the Alexa Toolbar take the quick tours at their website.

Alexa Toolbar (Sparky) for Firefox Quick Tour

Alexa Toolbar for Internet Explorer Quick Tour

Step 1 - Installing The Alexa Toolbar

Now we come to the super easy first step installing the Alexa Toolbar. Click on the picture below, follow the instructions, and install the toolbar.

Now that you have the toolbar installed you are already giving. How is that possible?

Automatic Giving With The Alexa Toolbar

From the Alexa website.

Making a better Internet

Alexa could not exist without the participation of the Alexa Toolbar community. Each member of the community, in addition to getting a useful tool, is giving back. Simply by using the Firefox and IE toolbars each member contributes valuable information about the web, how it is used, what is important and what is not. This information is returned to the community as Related Links, Traffic Rankings and more.

The toolbar helps increase the Alexa Rank for each site you visit (including your site.) As your rank grows you will notice an increase in site visitors. Some first time readers come to your site see a low Alexa Ranking and then quickly hit the back button, I’m sure you don’t judge a website by its stats unfortunately all blog readers are not as great as the readers here at Passionate Blogger. Also Advertisers use ranking sites like Alexa to determine how much they are willing to pay for an ad on your site.

One more step and your site will be setup to receive Alexa love.

Step 2 - Update Your Site Information On Alexa

Goto http://www.alexa.com/data/details/contact_info? you’ll see a page like this:

Enter your website URL and you will be taken to a page where you can enter information about your website that helps to personalize your Alexa listing. You can enter as much or as little information here as you would like. I don’t know if I would suggest entering your phone number or home address. Now hit the coutinue button at the bottom of that page and you are ready to claim your site.

Alexa wants to know that you are the actual owner of the site and it gives you 3 options to prove it.

Option 1

Enter an e-mail address where Alexa can contact you. This option will only work if you have an email address that ends with you website address. Like this @yoursite.com (yoursite would be the name of your site)

For most people this option will not work, if not move on to the next option.

Option 2

Place a file called info.txt on the root of your site

You may place an info.txt file containing your contact info in the root of your site for Alexa to fetch.

Right-click the link to the file: info.txt. that Alexa gives you and save it to your computer. Do not edit the file!

Copy the info.txt file from your computer to the root of your site. (you will have ftp this file to your website’s server. If your site is on blogspot you will not be able to do this. Move on to option 3)

Verify that the info.txt file is there with your browser. (Go to http://www.yoursite.com/info.txt.)

One last step! Once you have verified that the file is there, tell Alexa to fetch it by clicking on the fetch link that they give you:

If you cannot complete this step for some reason let me know and I will try to walk you through it. If you have a blogspot blog you will not be able to upload the file to the root of your website. Don’t worry there is a way for you blogspot bloggers to update your information.

Option 3

Open Directory

Alexa displays site names and descriptions from the Open Directory. If you would like us to display a site name or description for your site, please go to the Open Directory, find the appropriate category for your site, and click the “suggest URL” link at the top of the page. (We highly recommend reading their submission guidelines first.) Once Open Directory updates their data, your changes will be reflected in all Alexa services when we next receive a periodic update from them.

I highly suggest every blog owner submit their site to the Open Directory. This adds another link to your website and helps readers and search engines better find your site.

Go About Your Blogging Life

That is all you really need to do to start giving and receiving Alexa love. Growing your Alexa Rank will take time, however you should start seeing an improvement fairly quickly.

In a little over a month my Alexa Rank here at Passionate Blogger went from nonexistent to 385,159 (as of August 29th, 2007.) That is an incredibly quick climb for a new blog. I owe it all to the regular readers that have been kind enough to give Passionate Blogger a vote each time they visit by simply having the Alexa Toolbar installed on their browser.

In the next installment of the give and receive series we will focus on links.

If a teacher was grading your blog what grade would it get? Would you like to get an A+? WebsiteGrader.com will check your blog and give you advice and tips on how to get a great grade for your website. Best of all, it is FREE!

Find out how WebsiteGrader helped me and how it can help your website.

WebsiteGrader.com - Get The Popularity Of Your Blog Graded For FREE!

Here is what J. Robinson of SiteFever.com has to say about Website Grader,

WebsiteGrader will calculate your blog’s popularity in relation to other similar blogs in your niche and give you some great tips on how to improve its popularity and search engine ranking. It’s a really neat tool to keep handy.

J’s words got me curious so I went over and checked WebsiteGrader out. Below is the first grade Passionate Blogger got.

Passionate Blogger scored an 80. I scrolled down the handy list of tips that WebsiteGrader provides with your free report trying to find out how to improve my grade.

WebsiteGrader’s suggestions for Passionate Blogger:

High Number Of Meta Keywords - We would suggest keeping the keywords to 10 or less. Currently, this site has 29 keywords in the meta-data.

I was wondering if I was using to many meta keywords in the header of this blog and this report convinced me. I quickly edited the header.php file for this blog and reduced the 29 keywords down to only 9.

Domain Expires Within A Year - We would suggest renewing this domain with your registrar. Google and other search engines may penalize websites with domains that are set to expire soon. The reason for this is that many spam sites are often registered for short periods of time. Most registrars support paying upfront for several years and the cost is usually only about $10-$20 per year, so it is generally worth it.

I was not aware that your site might be penalized for not registering your domain name for more than a year. I’ll have to take care of this problem sometime next month when I have more room in my budget.

Permanent Redirect Not Found - Search engines often regard www.passionateblogger.com and passionateblogger.com as two different websites unless you take specific measures to signal to them that they are the same site.

The best way to handle this situation is to setup what is known as a permanent redirect (or a “301″ redirect) from one of these sites to the other. This way, any links that are pointing to the secondary site benefit the primary site, from an SEO perspective.

I knew this tip but I had forgot to do it here at Passionate Blogger. I did a Google search for redirect plugins for WordPess and found the Permalink Redirect WordPress Plugin. I installed the plugin and now anytime someone visits Passionate Blogger and does not use the www. in the address they are redirected to http://www.passionateblogger.com/

More than one H1 tag found - More than one primary heading tags (H1 tags) have been found on the page. Though this is not a critical issue, it is unusual for a web page to contain more than one heading tag. We suggest having a single primary heading per page.

Ok I am guilty of—sometimes—using more than one h1 tag on the same page. I did not make a change to this advice yet. I will do more research and see if I really agree with only using one h1 tag per page before I make this change.

After the changes I ran another WebsiteGrader report to see how these changes had effected my blog’s grade. Below is my 2nd grade for Passionate Blogger.

Wow, I went from a grade of 80 to a grade of 87! My site will score much higher once it gets a little older and Google finally gives Passionate Blogger a Page Rank.

What grade does your blog get?

My other blog Passionate America got a grade of 97. Passionate America gets a higher grade because it has been around longer, has higher stats, and has a Page Rank of 5.

What is your blog’s grade?

If you would like to quickly improve your blog so that it can be the best that it can be goto WebsiteGrader.com and get your free report.

How did your blog score? And what was its score after making the changes WebsiteGrader suggested?

J. Robinson at SiteFever.com took the blog addiction test at Mingle2.com and discovered he is 80% addicted to blogging. In his post, Are You Addicted To Blogging? he says,

If someone could answer their questions honestly and be more addicted to blogging than me, I’d like to know about it!

I’m always up for a challenge so I took the blogging addiction test.

I scored a 97%!!! Does anyone know the number for a really good addiction counselor (Priscilla are you available?) Seems like I need to put down the laptop and spend some time at the pool. I’m going to Washington D.C. on September 15th to live blog the GOE 3 event. Maybe I should spend some time exercising, finding another hobby, and tanning my pasty white skin?

Time for you to take the blog addiction test. Leave a comment and let everyone know your score. If we can find a few more people that are as addicted as me we might be able to negotiate a group rate.

(update) Thanks to Meghna who emailed me and told me that I had spelled addiction wrong in the title of this post.

Virtual Blog Dissection

Does your blog look a little plain? Is it hard to tell your blog from the thousands of other blogs that look just like yours? Ever wondered what your blog could look like with a few changes to the layout and design? Well wonder no more!

Get A FREE Virtual Blog Dissection?

I am giving away 5 FREE Virtual Blog Dissections. If you would like to get a FREE virtual blog dissection (or want to nominate another blog) leave a comment on this post (make sure to include your name and blog URL.)

Once there are at least 10 entries I’ll run a poll and the readers of Passionate Blogger (that would be you) will get to vote to select the top 5.

Oh I almost forgot, you are probably wondering what a virtual blog dissection is. Well it just happens that I have just finished a blog dissection of Big Mike’s new blog. Check it out…

What Is A Virtual Blog Dissection?

My brother Big Mike just started a new blog he calls Plaidiphilia (cool name) and it looks a little plain. For a blog about the love of plaid, where is all the plaid? This will not stand and will probably anger the plaid gods, so there is only one thing to do, Plaidiphilia needs a virtual blog dissection.

Plaidiphilia Before

Plaidiphilia After

What do you think?

Now that is Plaidlicious!

The best thing about a virtual blog dissection is that I didn’t really change his blog at all. See for yourself, Plaidiphilia. All I did was take a screenshot of his blog and change the look of the screenshot with my image editing software.

Big Mike can compare the two screenshots, decide what he likes, and then he can make the changes he wants to make to his blog. He could even sweet talk me and I might be able to work his blog redesign into my busy schedule (hehe.)

Update: Big Mike liked the virtual blog dissection so much he let me do the real thing to his blog. Here is the all new Plaidiphilia.

Do You Want A FREE Virtual Blog Dissection?

You can nominate your blog or another blog by leaving a comment. <strike>15</strike> 10 entries will be selected for the poll and then we will vote on the top 5 blogs in need of a virtual blog dissection.

Update #2: These are the entries I have so far:

Ramkarthik @ Blogging Tune

Jerad Kaliher @ Bust A Change

Patricia @ Spiritual Journey Of A Lightworker

Laurie @ Midlife Perspective

I have decided to go with 10 entries instead of 15.
