• Receive pay based revenue generated from page views
• Receive $1 for each article approved as local content. (Minimum of 2 articles to maximum of 5 per week)
• A week is Sunday to Saturday
• Articles should be 200-400 words

Local article suggestions

• Articles that highlight people, places, businesses, and events
• Stories about people of local and/or national interest that are from your local area

Tip!  Although very easy to write, unfortunately you will not get local incentive pay for recipe articles.

To see if your articles were approved as local, you have to go to My Content. Click on an article and then click on Edit Article. Scroll to the bottom of the article and look for Review Status. Below is a screenshot of what an approved local article would show.

So for November 2011, I wrote 10 articles.

10 articles – 1 declined for local = 9 approved local articles x $1 incentive pay = $9

I earned $7.88 for page views earnings, so my total payment should be $16.88 for November.

However, my Paypal payment was $14.89. I’m still not sure why it’s lower.

I’m not exactly clear on what I am getting paid. I get so many emails each week about suggestions for what to write and how certain topics may be eligible for more money. They have a forum for my region where I can get even more suggestions. For example, if I write 2 articles per week that are approved as local articles, I get $5.00 plus my regular earnings generated from ads. However, you don’t get a confirmation when you’ve been approved for the $5.00. When you look up your earnings, you only see what you’re earning from the ads. So I was surprised when I got an email stating that I had a Paypal payment from them for $14.89!

November Examiner Earnings

Most of what I’ve read online is that you won’t earn anything from Examiner and it’s only good for building traffic to your personal website or portfolio. However, I wrote 10 articles in November that were a minimum of 250 words. One of them was a recipe and most of the others were about charity events in my local city. I wrote articles that were time sensitive for my city. They will likely come up in search engines in November 2012. For November, my ad earnings were $7.88. Although I haven’t written anything this month, I have earned $0.57 from ad revenue on these articles. Because my total November payment is $14.89, my assumption is that I received 2 $5.00 bonuses for writing local content and then a fee was subtracted for issuing the payment. However, it doesn’t state that they subtract a processing fee for payments. I got some kind of incentive pay. Anyway, I was happy because I wasn’t expecting to meet the $10 minimum payout this month!

Examiner just announced that they have a partnership with CBS Local Digital Media. This means that select stories written by Examiner.com contributors will be featured on CBS websites. So things such as “Best of” guides and “Top Spots” lists will be popular feature items.

It’s important to note that you should work on indexing each page of your site. Rather than using links to just yoursite.com, use links to a page

yoursite.com/page.

1. Social bookmarking

• Submit your pages to Digg.com and Reddit.com
• Update Facebook and Twitter with a link to your pages. In addition to getting indexed quicker, your followers may view your pages.

2. Submitting articles

• Write articles about the content of your pages and include a link to the page you want indexed.
• Use sites such as Squidoo.com, Infobarrel.com, and Hubpages.com.

3. Internal linking

• Update old pages with links to your new pages using anchor text. Anchor text includes the keywords that you are targeting.

4. Pinging your website

• Pinging is a method of alerting search engines that you have new content. One site I recommend is pingomatic.com.

5. Comment on authority blogs

• Leave comments on the top sites in your niche. You can do a Google search on your keywords and leave valuable comments on these blogs.
• Look for sites that have a “Most recent comments” list on the sidebar. Your link in the sidebar will show up on each page on the website.

6. Updating content regularly

• Update your site frequently with good content. Your site is less likely to be crawled the longer you go without adding content. Even if you update old posts, this is better than nothing.

Alexa is one of the ways that sites are ranked. Your goal is to be as close to #1 as possible. Alexa has a toolbar that tracks millions of sites that users visit. By downloading the toolbar, you can help increase the ranking of sites you enjoy visiting. The more visitors and comments you get from Alexa toolbar users, the better your Alexa ranking will become.

You can download the Alexa toolbar and then participate in Alexa blog hops to lower your ranking. One site that I enjoy that hosts a weekly Alexa blog hop is A Helicopter Mom.

Important: When you install the toolbar and visit sites, make sure the entire site loads 100% and then visit a second page and wait for it to load.

As an experiment, I’m going to document my Alexa ranking over the next few months to show how the blog hop impacts my rankings. As of December 22, 2011, here are the Alexa rankings of this site and another niche site I own. The niche site currently has 50 incoming links and is 5 weeks old.
