Golf instructors often talk about the transition in the golf swing as that pause between completing the backswing and starting the downswing. They often suggest that slowing down the transition is one of the most important keys to hitting a good shot.

Well, I’m not qualified to comment on the technicalities of the golf swing. However, I am qualified to comment on what for me is an even more important transition in golf psychology. It’s the transition from the conscious analytical planning phase of your pre-shot routine to the unconscious instinctive phase of actually hitting the ball. Unlike the pause at the top of the backswing, the faster you can comfortably make this transition, the better and more consistently you’ll find yourself striking the ball or rolling the putt.

If you watch the top players in the world, like Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, you’ll notice that they take very little time between taking their chosen club out of the bag and hitting the ball. A recent study suggested that Tiger and Phil consistently take around 11 to 12 seconds to do this and they are very consistent with the timing. If they took any longer, they often hit a less than good shot – these guys don’t hit many downright bad shots.

So what do they do in those 11 to 12 seconds? Well, every player has his own idiosyncrasies, including re-gripping, waggling, breathing, blinking and countless other rituals. However, they all seem to :

1. take one or two practice swings to get the feel of the shot
2. they visualise playing step forward to the ball and
3. take their stance
4. align their body and clubface
5. take a final look at their target
6. finally, hit the “start button” and swing the club or putter.

What’s interesting is that they don’t seem at all rushed in fitting all that into such an apparently short time. They certainly don’t have any spare time for self doubt and that little voice in their head telling them they’re doing it all wrong! In fact, they complete the process like they’re in some sort of trance and that means that they are leaving the whole process to their unconscious golf mind, just like driving a car or riding a bike.

Now some of the players you watch on TV or out on the course take a lot longer to make this transition and the time they take is less consistent. How well did you see them play? If you watched Sergio Garcia playing golf a few years ago, you’d have often seen him take an inordinately long time to hit the ball. He had a pained expression on his face that suggested he was experiencing a lot of negative self-talk and he seemed to be wringing the life out of the club as he repeatedly re-gripped his hands. It’s no surprise that his golf was inconsistent at best and he certainly didn’t seem to be enjoying his golf.

So how do I speed up my transition from taking my club out to hitting the ball, I hear you say. Well one way is to make the whole process an instinctive or unconscious activity. Streamline your own transition process and use it every time you hit a shot on the golf course, at the driving range, on the practice putting green and in your mental golf practice. You do practice and play golf in your mind, now don’t you?

As well as all this training and practice you need all the help you can get when you get out there on the golf course so you can reach that perfect score.

Now exactly how far away is that bunker or the elusive hole? If you knew exactly how far away the pin is you would be able to select the appropriate club to hit the ball.

As usual modern technology has come to the rescue, via the invention of the Golf Rangefinder. A Golf Rangefinder will tell you exactly how far that bunker is, what driver you will need to get over the pond, the exact club you will need to chip onto the green.

Now before you rush onto the Internet and purchase one of these great gadgets you need to know a few facts so that you purchase the type of golf Rangefinder to suit your needs.

There are two models of Golf Rangefinder. Golf Laser Range Finders and GPS Range Finders and. both are very similar in accuracy.

The Golf Laser Range Finders looks a little like binoculars, you look through them and the unit then measures the distance from the ball to the pin, or bunker, or dogleg or any other hazard by use of a laser beam. You do have to have a direct line of sight as well as a steady hand.

The Golf GPS Range Finders are more complicated; a map of the golf course is required to be loaded. Then your position on the course is determined to the pin by a satellite signal, just like a Sat-Nav in your car.

The ability to use a GPS golf rangefinder depends upon the quality of the map. GPS maps may only show the distance to travel to the front, middle and back of the green and depending upon the model, may not even show hazards. Several of to-days GPS Range Finders have thousands of popular golf courses already pre-loaded and you can purchase golf course maps through a subscription process.

Steven Carson is a golfing nut. He has read book after book on how to improve your golf and purchased all the latest gadgets to help you on the golf course. Steven is captain of his local golf club and loves helping fellow members to improve their scores. To find out about his research on Golf Rangefinders go to: http://www.squidoo.com/rangefinders4U. He has listed the more popular models and is adding to the site all the time.

by Rob Jeffries

If you think about what constitutes the average golf game, you may be surprised. Yes, there are a few drives – 12-14 in any average round. There are 20-30 shots off the fairway or the rough, but then there are far more shots within 50 yards of the pin. Chip shots, flop shots, pitch shots, sand shots, and putts actually make up the majority of the shots on your scorecard.

So, the question really is why are you spending so much time, practicing on the driving range with your driver? Wouldn’t your time be much better spent with a 9-iron, a sand wedge, or your putter? Yes, but for most golfers, it isn’t as much fun.

But, if you want to really improve your overall game, you have to improve your short game and that is where golf putting tips can help. By shaving a few strokes on the green every round, you will see almost immediate drops in your overall score.

When it comes to golf putting tips, everyone has their own, but here are a few that work for me:

1. Some golfers say that you should take your time, study the putt, find a line, take a breath – but the more you think about it, the more you worry about it, the more you take away your natural skills and ability. Just find your line, step up, and knock it in.

2. Putting is one part of the game where less is more. Keep still, keep stiff, and let your shoulders do the work. Try not to involve your wrists or elbow, and definitely do not involve your hips or knees!

3. Don’t be afraid to hit it long! No putt that is short will ever go in, but a few longer ones might! Some of the best golf putting tips are like this – common sense.

Old wives tales, rumors, myths, urban legend. They all have their roots in misunderstanding, misinformation, partial truth or flat falsehood. When it comes to your golf swing this nasty nest of serpents can cause real problems. We’ll take a look at three of these myths so you can guard against getting into bad habits with your own game.

Myth # 1: Aim At Your Target – This is not so much a myth as it is confusing. Sure you want to aim at the target. The last time I checked there wasn’t any flag sticks in the parking lot. Just “what” do you aim at the target?… Clubface? Shoulders? Your body? To avoid confusion you need a few more details regarding what and where to aim given the conditions and situation. In this case the myth can cause misaligment and off-line shots.

Myth # 2: A Longer Swing Is A Faster Swing – Most golfers swing their driver faster than a 6 or 7 iron. It is a natural tendency and misconception that by cranking up the swing speed with longer clubs you will hit the ball harder and farther. You need to drive a wooden stake through th heart of this myth. Increasing the swing speed and effort to hit the ball harder usually throws off your natural tempo. You should stay in what is “your” personal rythm for each and every shot. Resist the myth.

Myth # 3: Always Play Shorter Clubs Back In your Stance – Again, a partial truth without additional details can get you into serious trouble. Positioning the ball incorrectly can cause alignment problems for a shot of a given length. With the ball too far forward tends to set up up too far left of target and with the ball to far back your shoulds can close leading to a push or a hook. It is true that you position the ball farther back for your pitching wedge than driver, BUT, for a normal shot with a level lie the ball should never be placed farther back than “center.”

Now that we have looked at three of the many myths that exist you can be on the look-out for the others. Some are partially true, but many are just plain wrong.
