According to The Case Management Society of America, “Professional certification is a voluntary process by which a non-governmental professional organization grants recognition to an individual who has met certain qualifications. It is a credential, which attests to the fact that the individual has demonstrated a certain level of mastery of a specific body of knowledge and skills within the relevant field of practice. Certification should not be confused with either licensing or accreditation. While each involves some type of evaluation and the awarding of some type of credential, they are quite different from one another and the terms should not be used interchangeably.”

Certifications

The Commision for Case Manager Certification gives eligible professional case managers with adequate experience an opportunity to become board-certified case managers across the spectrum of health and human services. The Commision is the voice and advocate for professional case management excellence.
The American Academy of Case Management is the nation’s high quality standard education and certification program in healthcare and nursing case management today. Their program is based on solid educational curriculums that lead current healthcare professionals to the achievement of national certification in Case Management. The ACM Certification was created by American Case Management Association in 2005, and is designed specifically for Hospital Case Management Professionals.
The certification process of American Board of Managed Care Nursing promotes excellence and professionalism in managed healthcare and recognizes individuals who demonstrate an acquired body of knowledge and expertise in managed care.

 
The Case Management Society of America has compiled a listing of credentialing entities and eligibility requirements for case management.

For new graduates:

The ANCC Nursing Case Management board certification examination is a competency-based examination that provides a valid and reliable assessment of the entry-level clinical knowledge and skills of registered nurses in the nursing case management specialty after initial RN licensure.

About the HEDIS Infographic

Many of the nurses surveyed had experience with data collection for HEDIS projects working for numerous managed care organizations around the country.

HEDIS Nurses Planning to Look for a New Job

83% of nurses with HEDIS experience noted that they planned to look for a new job this year which is 12 percentage points higher than most care management nurses. This is attributed to the fact that HEDIS nursing professionals usually take assignment work rather than full-time positions, therefore most are continuously in search of their next assignment.

HEDIS Nurses Career Resolutions and Top Motivators for Job Change

The number one career goal for the year for most HEDIS nurses was to further their education. Secondarily most HEDIS nurses are looking for more money in better paying assignments and finally HEDIS nurses are continually searching for more project work.

While those are the top career goals for HEDIS nurses there are several tother factors that would motivate a HEDIS nurse to change jobs or work for another healthcare plan on a HEDIS assignment. The number-one motivator cited by HEDIS nurses was having autonomy on the job. Nurses often work HEDIS assignments for the autonomy that comes with the project. Coming in second, HEDIS nurses are also looking to explore new opportunities in care management and many HEDIS nurses would also prefer to have more stability in their work rather than jumping from assignment to assignment.

HEDIS Nurse Career Goals vs. Other Care Management Nurses

Here’s how the career goals of HEDIS nurses stacked up against other nurses working in care management professions such as: case management, utilization review, appeals / denials, quality and risk. The biggest area of difference is the number of HEDIS nurses that plan to semi-retire and seek out project work. HEDIS nurses are also more likely than other care management nurses to search for career options that are close to home and have a flexible schedule. Another significant difference between HEDIS nurses and other care management nurses is that they are more likely to be in search of an assignment that carries employment benefits.

When searching for a new assignment most HEDIS nurses are looking for a project where they will have autonomy in their work, a chance to explore new areas of care management and stability that is hard to come by when working on a project basis.

When your health plan is working to find the right HEDIS staffing provider, it’s important to keep all of these factors in mind. Your health plan has a lot at risk in the HEDIS process and the more seasoned and happy the nurses assigned to your review, the better chances you’ll have for a successful outcome.
