Spicing Up Life with Bon Chon Chicken: A Feature and Review in One Blog Post

It has been months since I last attended a blog event due to my busy work schedule, but when I heard that there is going to be a Bon Chon event for bloggers, I didn't hesitate and confirmed my attendance with Azrael (Thanks again, Az!).

I have read a lot about Bon Chon Chicken over the internet and I would never let this opportunity pass without even trying it. The event went smoothly well as food bloggers gathered at Bon Chon Chicken-Ayala Triangle Garden, Makati. Mr. Scott Tan, owner of Bon Chon Philippines, was also there to welcome us.

It was indeed a delightful event, as Bon Chon filled our tummies with great food and our hearts with great pleasure. They served us with their bestsellers, and I can say they didn't disappointed me. Without further ado, here's my take of the food they presented:

Ginger Tofu Salad

The vegetables in the Ginger Tofu Salad was fresh and all so crunchy you would never say "no" for an answer. You can easily mix and shake the veggies, tofu, fried wanton wrapper (stripped) and the sesame sauce altogether because it comes in a covered container. Pour the sauce cautiously because too much of it would give you a salty dish. This is one of my favorites because of the crunchy fried wanton wrapper!

Crispy Calamari

I am not much of a squid person, so I won't claim the Crispy Calamari as my favorite. But in all fairness, it tasted awesomely good—crispy when hot and not too salty. The creamy, cheesy dip adds flavor to it, too.

Dory Fish Taco

The Dory Fish Taco was also a hit. I loved it. I think it was my first time to eat Dory (or as far as I remember). The fish was tender and meaty. The vegetables, like that in the green tofu salad, were fresh and crunchy and best paired with the cream toppings. However, I think it lacked the super spicy feel. Hot sauce, please!

Rice Beef Bulgogi

Bulgogi was okay. It was a combination of sweet, salty, and spicy flavors, and I liked it—especially with rice. This is so perfect for lunch! I wish Bon Chon opens a branch near our office. Would it be possible, Bon Chon? *beautiful eyes to Mr. Tan*

Okay, this is my most favorite part: FRIED CHICKEN!!! Seriously, Bon Chon Chicken is the best chicken I've tried so far. The chicken was perfectly marinated and deep fried. It was totally spicy but still tolerable for the senses. It is the kind of dish that I would not get bored of eating. I can even finish all twelve in one sitting, even without rice. Two thumbs up! I'll surely come back to Bon Chon!

Why I Dislike Dunkin' Donuts' Sansribav

I thought that Dunkin' Donuts' Sansribav would taste like real sansrival but all I felt was nothing but sugar, a little textured and rough. My expectation has not been met.

With a Big Dunk bavarian donut, only topped with over sweet white icing and some toasted coco sprinkles and nuts, I think it is overpriced for P45.

Dole® Bananas to Start Every Day Full of Happiness and Love

I am not much of a banana eater. I'd rather choose oranges or apples or grapes. But now that I am taking the challenge of No-Rice Policy to lose some weight, I have to replace rice and other carbo-filled food with a supplement that is rich in vitamins and minerals—take note that a serving of a 100-gram banana has 23 grams of carbohydrates. Hearing about bananas as among the qualifiers, I put it on top of my list.

Aside from carbohydrates, banana is also a good source of potassium, iron, calcium, phosphorus, vitamins a, b (thiamine), and c. I have also known that bananas are rich in protein, which is converted to serotonin—a hormone that is known to improve your mood and make you feel happy. Now, tell me, aren't bananas a great package? I won't be having a hard time losing weight any more because I am learning to love my banana and—of course, it is better shared with the ones you love so dearly.

If you're sick and tired of the usual dishes you prepare for your family picnic. There are many options that you can take. If you often serve American dishes, why not try dishes that are very popular in other countries. Lumpiang Shanghai is one of the most popular dishes in the Philippines made with ground pork or beef, carrots, onion, and spices. Although it's a fried dish, you can always make it healthy with the use of canola or vegetable oil - rich in omega 3, and vegetable fillings. Meat products such as pork or beef are the main ingredient of this Filipino dish. Here are some of the important reminders before you buy meat product in commercial and public markets.

How to Pick Fresh Meat

You might have heard some news about meat products being subject for inspection because of known diseases such as the 'foot and mouth' disease. With this thing in mind, you can never be too careless in choosing meat products to serve for your family. Although fresh meat is guaranteed in known markets, it's still important that you know how to pick one.

- The storage life of meat is short. By looking at the sell-by date, you'll have an idea of how fresh the meat is. If you're going to buy meat in vacuum-packed cuts, expect a longer sale period. Pork and beef have shorter sale period - 1 day for beef and 3- 5 days for pork.
- The coloring is also important in determining the freshness of the meat. Fresh ground beef is red on the outside with a purple shade on the inside. Pork is usually pale in color.
- The last thing you must do is to press the meat firmly. It should spring right back if it's really fresh.

Lumpiang Shanghai Recipe

Now that you already have fresh meat (ground pork or beef), you can proceed on preparing the other ingredients for the recipe. These ingredients easily found in the market and you won't have to worry about looking for one.

Ingedients:

Vegetable or canola oil
2 pounds ground pork or beef
4 crushed garlic cloves
1 cup of onion (chopped)
1 cup of green onions (chopped)
1 cup of carrots (minced)
1 cup of sliced cabbage (preferably thin)
2 teaspoon(s) of salt
2 teaspoon(s) of garlic powder
2 teaspoon(s) of ground pepper
2 teaspoon(s) of soy sauce
Lumpia wrappers

Procedure:

- Put a large skillet or wok over high temperature and pour in 2 tablespoon(s) of vegetable or canola oil. Cook the ground pork or beef by stirring frequently until you can't see any pink coloring.
- Once you're finished with the meat, you can set is aside and drain the grease from the cooking pan.
- With a thin layer of oil coating, cook the garlic and onion for 2 - 3 minutes.
- Now you can sauté the meat with the garlic and onion. Add the carrots, green onions, and cabbage.
- Season it with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and soy sauce. Once you achieve your preferred taste, remove it from heat and set aside until it's cool enough.
- Prepare the lumpia wrappers by pealing it off from each other. It's quite a challenge so you might to apply some water on the edges to make it easy for you to peal.
- With a lumpia wrapper placed on a smooth surface, put 3 tablespoons of cooked pork and vegetable filling on the wrapper, creating a 1-inch width line that ends near the wrappers edges.
- Fold the sides along the length of the filling, tuck in both ends and roll it neatly.
- You must keep the roll tight. Seal the edge of the lumpia wrapper by moistening it with water. Once you're done with filling the wrappers, it's time for your to cover the rolls with plastic to retain its moisture.
- Heat the large pan over medium heat. Pour in the vegetable or canola oil about 1-inch depth. Fry the lumpia rolls for 2 - 3 minutes until it turns golden brown.
- After frying, you can let the lumpia rest in an oil absorbing paper or tissue. Serve while it's warm!

Jollibee 39ers Sweet and Sour Meatballs, Fast Five Movie Screening, and Teleserv's Bloggers Event

Before Nice and I proceeded to the cinema for the bloggers' event hosted by Teleserv, we had our early dinner first at Jollibee just across Telus where I work. We could dine in some other restaurants but Nice was craving for Jollibee Chickenjoy so it was her call. It was a good thing I was able to order my favorite Jollibee 39ers, too.

When I heard that Phil Younghusband will be at the Kenny Rogers' Bloggers Night tonight, I did not think twice and immediately confirmed my attendance to the event. I am neither a fan of football, The Azkals nor the Philyounghusband brothers, I would still die if I wouldn't take this opportunity to see them in person. I've always loved Kenny Rogers Roasters since the very beginning, especially my longtime favorite Classic Healthy Plate. Now they are offering another deliciously healthy dish, the Kenny's Hainanese Chicken.

Say hi to Hainanese Chicken! It is tender chicken gently poached, served with chili, ginger, and sweet soy sauces, and a cup of flavorful rice made with chicken stock and topped with toasted garlic. It also comes with a bowl of hot soup.

So how was the Hainanese Chicken? I say, the chicken meat is juicy to the bones, the saltiness is just right--not too much. It is like you're eating chicken tinola, less the soup. Well, actually, the soup is in a separate bowl, though. One thing I noticed is that if you use only one of the sauces, it is some kind of boring to the taste; but if you apply the three sauces, one at a time, alternately, you will savor the taste of satisfaction, enjoying poached chicken in three different ways.

Kenny Rogers, being known for its healthily delicious products, also offers frozen yogurt, which comes with toppings of fruits, brownie, and graham bits. It's a healthy way of having desserts, after a meaty, savory chicken meal.

Doughnut Break @ Country Style in La Casarita

Before going to a blog event yesterday, my Superfriend and I stopped over at Country Style in La Casarita, San Miguel, Manila. We had a piece of doughnut each while waiting for Edwin to pick us up. Here's my plate.

John Bamboo Sate House: A Taste of Indonesia Cuisine at the Heart of Nuvali

It was my first time in Nuvali, Sta. Rosa, Laguna. I heard a lot of good things about this place: fresh air, nature trails, koi pond, and good food. I never thought I would be here last Saturday. Thanks to my good friend, Alex Dizon, for bringing me along to experience Nuvali.

It was also my first time at John Bamboo Sate House by Red Crab. It caters Indonesian cuisine, which Chef Peter Ayson tries to introduce to Filipinos. The photos say it all: yummy, unique, and filling. But if you are going to ask me what I loved the most, it would be the oxtail soup, the fried duck, the fried noodles, and the sauteed fermented soybeans with kangkong. And not to forget the ice-cold passion fruit juice.

Executive Chef Peter Ayson is right when he said that restaurants should not be intimidating. In other words, food hubs like this should be a venue for relaxation and satisfaction. It should be a place where customers can feel at-home, enjoy the food, and bond with loved ones. That's what John Bamboo offers to the public: good ambience, good service, and more importantly, good food. That's what I experienced upon visiting them. I hope they will continue the tradition.

Secret Spells in the Republic of Cavite's Finest Delicacies

I have been to Republic of Cavite (ROC) Restaurant twice already, both at a food bloggers' event organized and hosted by Town's Delight the Caterer. And if there are reasons to look forward to coming back here, it would be their originally-Caviteño dishes, that are all titillating to the senses.

Cavite Express

Cavite Express is also known as Ginataang Langka but is a twisted version that uses only kalumbahin or a variety of coconut that produces a sweet and sumptuous taste of coconut milk. It is made healthier because ROC uses halaan (clams) and popular native tinapa from Salinas, Cavite.

Sinanglay na Pla-Pla

Sinanglay is known as a Bicol dish, where pla-pla, a kind of fish, is filleted, wrapped in pechay, and simmered in coconut milk. Again, kalumbahin, and another Caviteño ingredient, labong or bamboo sprout, are used in this recipe.

Sinampalukang Inihaw na Manok (Grilled Chicken Sinampalukan)

Because sinampalukan is such an underrated Filipino dish, ROC made a variation to make it more delightful and enticing. Unlike the traditional sinampalukan, a soup-based dish with vegetables, the chicken is marinated in a secret sampaloc (tamarind) sauce and grilled to perfection. It is best served with sampaloc vinegar to enhance its flavor.

Crispy Binagoongang Baboy

Unlike the usual binagoongan, this one is essentially what we call "lechon kawali," served with grilled eggplant and topped with bagoong or shrimp paste. The crisp and crunch of deep-fried pork turned into a saucy dish is definitely one of the best things ROC can offer.

Kilawing Puso ng Saging

The Banana Heart Vinaigrette with Mussels tastes a lot more like Ginataang Langka, but with fresh tahong, one of Cavite's main seafood products. It has a spicy kick that awakens the sleeping soul in you.

Chicken Barbeque with Peanut Sauce

ROC made this chicken barbecue something that will please everyone's taste buds. With its creamy and not-so-sweet peanut sauce, not only the adults would love it, but also the kids who always crave for luscious, syrupy dishes.

Crispy Dinuguan

Just like the Crispy Binagoongan, the pork is deep-fried until brown and crispy. When served, the crispy meat, along with the chicharong baboy, is separated from the cooked and thickened pork blood-based soup. Long, green pepper is mixed with the sauce to remove the stench of blood.

And last but not the list, my all-time favorite:

Lihim ni Lola

An original recipe of the catering company's matriarch, this is purple rice pudding, a smoother version of puto bumbong shaped like inverted puto or kutsinta. The secret is—shall we spill the beans?—let's just say there's something hidden inside that belongs to Lolo, and it's for Lola's eyes only. And so the picture above spoils the thrill.

Who can resist these temptations? Hungry or not, you will definitely say no to the secret spells in the Republic of Cavite's finest delicacies.

Desserts That Took My Breath Away Last Saturday

My trip to Paradizoo Theme and Residence Inn Tagaytay was indeed one of the moments that took my breath away. No, I didn’t get the chance to Zipline. Not that I have fear of heights; I just felt more like to be my group's official photographer rather than being extreme that day. It was breath-taking simply because I was closer to nature, I was with awesome friends, and I was given SWEETS!

Kissing is like drinking salted water. You drink, and your thirst increases. --Chinese Proverb ♥You'll get the same effect with Mendez, Cavite's hot pure chocolate drink. Once you've emptied a cup, you'll see yourself craving for more.

Chicken Moroccan @ Les Caraibes Beach Resort: A Taste of Good Life

Yobs and I celebrated our first anniversary at Les Caraibes Beach Resort in Laiya, San Juan, Batangas last February 22 and 23. He ordered Beef Caldereta (P195), while I had Chicken Moroccan, (P250). Setting aside the beef caldereta, let us talk about my Carribean-inspired dinner.

The meat was tender and juicy it must have been marinated a day before. I loved the generous amount of onions, tomatoes, and herbs sauteed with it. A side dish of buttered, cubed tomatoes and eggplants was also in the platter to balance the meaty goodness of the main course. Topped with a slice of orange, a couple of tortillas, and some basil, my Chicken Moroccan was made more enticing to the senses.

Chicken Moroccan is best partnered with fresh watermelon shake (P120/glass)

Speaking of quantity, the meal was really filling. Quality wise, it was truly satisfying. Chicken Moroccan is indeed a taste of good life. Great job, Chef (whoever you are)!!!

Rai Rai Ken's Kantonmen Heats Up a Drizzling Night

I always have the heart for noodle soups. Thanks to Rai Rai Ken, the No. 1 Japanese restaurant in the Philippines today, for offering a wide variety of ramen noodles to choose from. For tonight, I had Kantonmen. It is ramen with mixed vegetables and mixed seafoods and pork in (shoyu) soy sauce-based soup.

Kantonmen was perfect in that drizzling night. Its hot soup warmed my hungry stomach and the ingredients filled it, too. I loved both the mixture of vegetables and seafoods; it, therefore, satisfied my taste buds. It was not too spicy, unlike Tantanmen and Garlic Chili, and not too flavorful, unlike Chasyu and Seafood Hotpot. Nevertheless, they are equally good, depending on your day's craving. For me, this one, the Kantonmen, fairly matched the gloomy mode of the moment.

Goodfellas Steaks and Burgers: The Godfather's Treat for Everyone

Gambino Family, Gotti's Cheese, Frenchy, Pat and Geno's Sandwich, Caesar Salad, Margherita Burger, Potato Chips, Michael's Prime, Goodfellas House Steak, Santino's, Jimmy Two Times, Flamingo Wings, Sammy "The Bull" Gravano, Pollo "Chicken" Rackettes, and WiseGuy Burger.

At first, you'll think I am talking about movie characters or what. Actually, yes. Kind of. This is what Goodfellas Steaks and Burgers is all about: good food with names derived from mafia movies. I really had fun doing the name game with co-bloggers, memorizing all the names from the menu and pointing each out for a spoonful reward of such.

Thanks to Annesy del Mundo for inviting us, bloggers to have dinner at Goodfellas Steaks and Burgers in Kamuning, Quezon City. It was a weeknight but I had no regrets going to the event. I really had one of the most satisfying dinners in my entire food blogging existence. No stir.

Here's a glimpse of what we shared together.

Flamingo Wings: otherwise known as the chili buffalo wings (P220 solo; P395 to share).

Jimmy Two Times: two-way porkchop served with mixed vegetables and rice pilaf or mashed potato (P295).

Gambino Family: shrimp salpicao (P425 to share). Just like what I said a hundred times, shrimp is one of my weakness so what's the fuss? Never mind the diet.

Gotti's Cheese: Mozarella sticks served with tomato salsa dip (P365 to share). I can say that it's better than my Monte Cristo.

Pat and Geno's Sandwich: famous Philadelphia Angus cheese steak sandwich (P220 solo; P275 combo)

Margherita Burger: 100 grammer charbroiled burger, roasted tomato, mozzarella, basil, and cheese sauce (P220 solo; P275 combo).

WiseGuy Burger: 200 grammer honey-cured bacon cheese burger (P295 solo; P345 combo).

Frenchy: steak fries (P120 to share). Just plain and salted, to prolly balance the taste of steak.

Potato Chips (P120 solo). Just like the Frenchy, it's plain and salted, obviously for the same purpose as the former.

Caesar Salad (P275). Meat, meat, and meat could be sickening, so here's a plate of fresh vegetables to neutralize the meaty sense.

And now, the great part is the Steak Part. I am more of a carnivore so meat really makes me weak to the bones.

Michael's Prime: 12-14 ounces U.S. CAB Prime Rib (P995)

Goodfellas House Steak: 8-10 ounces Angus House Steak (P345)

And for my order, I had Santino's. It's a 10-12 U.S. CAB Ribeye for only P975. As I shared it with colleagues, I found out that it is meat is more tender than Michael's Prime, and compared to Goodfellas House Steak, it's tastier. Because of their Santino's, I'll always come back at Goodfellas!

They also offer meals for lunch, just like what Annesy made us try:

Sammy "The Bull" Gravano: sautéed Salchicha Hungaro topped off with mashed potato or Pilaf Rice & buttered vegetables (P185). The sausages are tender, juicy, and meaty with a perfect chili flavor;

and Pollo "Chicken" Rackettes: barbeque-marinated Chicken Quarter served w/ side salad, mashed potato or pilaf rice & buttered vegetables (P185). It is perfect for those who want some protein-fiber-carbo loading to boost the day up.

My Ocean Surf Experience at Marriot Cafe

Last January 14, bloggers dove into an entire buffet spread of ocean treasures prepared by Marriot's Cafe. It was totally a feast of the finest seafood and meat choices, of which I had an extravagant gastronomic experience.

And to make you salivate, here are some photos which I took during the event.

Even Chef demonstrated and cooked for us, one of his specialties, "Nilasing na Hipon." Although I didn't try it because the shrimp is still moving--and it's part of the show--my co-bloggers said it was good. Next time, I'll try it, too.
