You need to decide for yourself where you spend most of your time entertaining. If in the summer you are on the patio, then that is where your wet bar should be. If you entertain in your lounge, then you can have it just off the living area, tucked away in the side, remembering to keep space for bar stools too.

And, don’t limit yourself to a set style of bar counter. It’s up to you and you can go beyond the popular L shaped bar style. Maybe you prefer oval – it’s all up to your tastes and the organizational space of your room.

The counter should be a good height of at least 42″ so that guests can stand around the bar as many people do. Also your working area should be at least 36″ tall and 24″ deep. Don’t conform to the regular bar style with flimsy bar stools – look for something more elegant with a back so that it’s more comfortable for your guests to site on.

This means that you will want your glasses and drinks under the counter in the wet bar cabinet and not behind you. When we first bought a 5 seater wooden bar set for our patio we neglected to seal it. We were amazed at how quickly the patio chairs and table deteriorated. Between the elements of strong sunshine, rain and humidity, we had to throw away the now old looking and broken furniture. In retrospect we should have sealed the furniture when we first brought it home. Had we done that, the patio set might have lasted a good few years.

Secondly you need to consider practicality. Do you want to be able to store the patio set away in winter or when not in use?

Wooden bar stools are really stylish and a great choice but not always practical in terms of standing up to weather. Sunshine and wind causes mold, rotting and weakening of the furniture. Many furniture outlets claim their wooden furniture is sealed and it probably is, but only with a very light coat of varnish.

Depending on how exposed your patio is, you should think about sealing any furniture that is outside to make it last longer. If you are interested in buying wooden bar stools the popular types of materials used are teak, treated pine and cedar. Cedar is known to have good waterproofing abilities so if rain is a factor then look for cedar bar stools. Teak is more expensive but also very strong. Pine is more plain looking.

The most expensive material for outdoor furniture is metal. Metal patio furniture might be strong but weather eventually causes corrosion. Once again sealing the metal would be a wise idea. Cast aluminum and wrought iron are two of the tougher and more durable types.
