Agam Kuan Patna

Agam Kuan which means 'unfathomable well' is an ancient well whose history is strongly believed to be associated with Mauryan era dating back to c. 2nd-3rd BC. It is situated near Gulzarbagh railway station in Patna City area.

The famed well has found its mention in the travelogue of two Chinese traveler who visited Pataliputra in c. 5th CE and 7th CE respectively. Their is a story that Emperor Asoka killed his 99 brothers and threw them in this well, hence the well was also known as "The Hell of Asoka". However, the historical references does not point to this aspect. In most likelihood, it was a slaughter-house for animals for the Royal Palace kitchen.

The well also find mention in the Muslim travelers details during c. 13th CE who considered it auspicious and people used to throw coins for their wishes - a tradition which has found its way till this date. The raised structure has been of recent addition to protect it.

The inside view of the well. The well is approximately 65 feet deep having perimeter of over 20 feet. The well is brick enclosed in the upper part while the lower part is secured through wooden rings. The bricks in the figure below is typical of the Mauryan times.

A hand written plate stuck in the wall of the well reads "The well of Emperor Asoka" in Hindi. The plate seems to of recent origin, however the message it convey has a long history of over two thousand years.

The Shitala Mata Temple in the same campus is also very old though exact date can not be ascertained. The chief deity at the temple is considered to ward off the effects of small pox. Many marriage are held here during the auspicious months. It is one of the most visited temples in Patna. The Agam Kuan lie just behind it. In photo 2 above, the back side of temple is visible in upper right corner.

Kamaldah Jain Temple Complex, Patna photos

Kamaldah Jain Temple Complex is the oldest Jain temple in Patna. It is situated in Gulzarbagh area of Patna City. As per one source, its history goes back to the times of Maurya ( c. Second-Third BCE). Considering the locality in which it is situated, the historical fact can not be denied abruptly. The famed 80-pillared Mauryan Hall at Kumhrar and the unfathomable Agam Kuan lie within one kilometer of the Jain temples.

Presently, there are two groups of Jain temples - one of recent origin and another of old origin, lying some 0.5 km - 1 km distance separated by Gulzarbagh railway station. The below temple is of recent origin, situated on the main road of Gulzarbagh railway station, not far from the nearby over-bridge.

It consist of a small temple dedicated to Tirthankara Neminath Ji. An office of the temple management is also present in the building. Any information can be obtained from there. The temple is opened during the evening hour normally. On the request of the admin@patnaphotogallery, the temple doors were opened in the afternoon time.

The second group of temple is situated on the other side of the railway station. It consist of two temples. The admin@patnaphotogallery found it after some wandering, despite being directed by the office staff at the new temple as locals knew little about it and the location is bit hidden. This complex is dedicated to the famous Jain sage, Sthulibhadra Swami Ji. The below photograph is taken from the platform, with both temples highlighted.

One temple is on the plain while the other is situated on a mound. The temples have been in existence for some 200 years. The below is the temple at plain, named as Shri Shresthi Sudarshan Mandir. The temple contains the holy footprints of Shresthi Sudarshan.

The temple at the mound is meditation centre named as Shri Sthulibhadra Meditation Temple( Shri Sthulibhadra Sadhna Sthal ).

A view of the temple from outside. The admin@patnaphotogallery was pleasantly surprised to find a guard posted in the temple. Considering the area which is isolated and situated in a field, the presence of guard gives a feeling of security and assurance.

Badi Patan Devi Temple

Badi Patan Devi at Patna is one of the 51 Shakti Pitha in India. It is one of the most pious temple in Patna. Thousands of devotees visit the temple during Navratri, RamNavami and other festivals. It is believed that the right thigh of Devi Sati had fallen here according to the Hindu mythology.

The temple is situated in Maharajganj area of Patna city. It is approximately 6-7 km from Gandhi Maidan. The temple is situated some half a kilometer from the main road when visiting through the Patna City main road.

Besides the main deity of Mata Sati, a number of other deities are also present in the temple. Photography is banned inside the temple.

The temple is surrounded by a number of shops from where one can buy Prasad and other things for offerings in the temple.

A visit to Badi Patan Devi is often accompanied by visit to Chhoti Patan Devi, which is situated nearly a kilometer in the Chowk area. Shitala Mata Temple or Agam Kuan is also situated at a distance of nearly a kilometer. Both are easily reachable.

Patna Planetarium (Taramandal)

Patna Planetarium or popularly known as Taramandal (Literal meaning - Collection of Stars) is one of the most popular tourist destination in Patna. It is named after the former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. It present shows on astronomical facts and other universe related aspect in order to spread the scientific awareness among the people.

It s situated near Income Tax Roundabout (IT Golamber), off the Bailey Road. Patna Museum is situated close to it in the opposite direction. The Planetarium also held educational and scientific seminars and exhibitions.

The Planetarium held four show a day at regular internal. During holiday, a lot of people visit it. The entry fee is Rs 30 (as in Oct, 2013). Monday is off day.

The foundation stone of Indira Gandhi Science Complex (Taramandal) was laid in 1989. The work was completed in 1993 and inaugurated in the same year.

Patna Planetarium is an important place in Patna. Due to security concern, photo taking inside the building during show is not allowed. However, it does not affect the wonderful experience of watching the show. One should not miss Planetarium while visiting the city.

Maurya Lok Complex Patna

Maurya Lok is one of the most popular commercial complex in Patna. Besides housing a number of branded show rooms and restaurants, it also has several government offices and banks as well. Approximately 500 shops and around 10 government offices are situated here. It is situated near Dak Bunglow Chowk. It is also famous for the evening eateries that it offers.

A view of one part of the complex. The complex was opened way back in 1984. For the coming decades, it remained a favorite destination for Patnaites .

A lot of people visit the complex, mostly for enjoying the evening eateries. One can enjoy the local flavor like Litti-Chokha, Samosa, Jalebi, Puri-Kachowri etc. as well as other evening snacks like Pav-Bhaji, Bataa-Bhaji, Golgappe, Chowmins etc.

The complex houses shops of many kinds like clothes, computers, mobiles, handicrafts, restaurants, shoes, jewelers, photo shops etc.

The complex is spread in a big area and one may find it a bit difficult to locate a particular shop.

Litti-Chokha, a delicacy in the city. One can easily find it in the Maurya Lok Complex. Beside this, the Chowmeens of here are well known in the city.

Eco Park (Rajdhani Vatika), Patna photos

Eco Park or Rajdhani Vatika is a beautiful park situated in the very center of the city. It is situated in Punaichak area amid the hustle-bustle of the government offices. The park is maintained by the Department of Environment and Forest, Government of Bihar.

The park is divided into two section connected through an underground tunnel. It has two lakes and a canal which passes beside it. A view of the lake in one section of the park.

Aqua Zorbing in progress in the lake. Boat ride is also available in the lake. The entry ticket does not include charges for the Aqua Zorbing and Boat ride. One has to take separate ticket for it.

Buddha Smriti Park (Patna)

Buddha Smriti Park is situated near Patna Junction. The park was inaugurated in 2010 on the occasion of the 2554th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha.

The park has been constructed at the place where once Bankipore Jail stood. A part of the jail boundary has been preserved in the park.

The museum which will house the statues of Buddha in different postures. The museum was inaugurated in September 2013.

The above ticket does not include visit to the Karuna Stupa which contains the sacred relics of Buddha brought from different countries. A special ticket ( price Rs 50) has to be taken separately from the counter. A guard accompanies the visitor to the chamber which contains the relics.

World's tallest Gandhi statue in Patna photos

The World's tallest Gandhi Statue was inaugurated in 2013 at the historical Gandhi Maidan by the Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar. The statue is situated in South-West corner of the Gandhi Maidan. Its main gate is in front of St. Xavier's High School. The statue faces towards East Gandhi Maidan, or towards center of the maidan. The whole structure is placed on a raised platform, which can be reached through a number of step from all sides.

The total height of the structure is 72-feet, which includes 32-feet pedestal and 40-feet bronze statue. Gandhiji is shown holding a boy and a girl by his side. Beneath his feet is written "My life is my message" in Hindi. On the pedestal, panel have been created depicting important aspect of Gandhiji's life. Each side has a different panel.

The front panel depicts the 1942 August Kranti (Quit India Movement), in which Gandhiji has given his famous mantra of "Do or Die".

The side panel depicts the incident of Champaran Satyagrah of 1917.

The back panel shows Gandhiji sitting with Spinning Wheel (Charkha), giving example of importance of being self dependent.

The fourth panel picks the topic of Dandi March of 1930, which is an important part in the Indian struggle for freedom movement.

Patna Museum Photos

Patna Museum is one of the important treasure trove of rare artifacts in the country. It houses close to 45,000 artifacts, but due to lack of space, many are not put on exhibition. The museum was formally established in 1917 in the present building. The Museum has the proud possession of artifacts like Didarganj Yakshi (Chauri-Bearer) and the sacred relics of Lord Buddha.

The famed Didarganj Yakshi. The marvelous statue dates back to Mauryan times, approximately 2300 years back. It is one of the most remarkable statue in India.

The statue of Avalokiteshvar. This 11th century statue is another master piece of art and sculpture in the museum collection.

A section depicting the statues excavated from Nalanda. The Nalanda University was one of the world's biggest university of its time. Many rare artifacts were recovered during the excavation.

Christ Church Patna Photos

Christ Church is one of the oldest church in Patna. It was established in 1852. It is situated near North -Eastern edge of the Gandhi Maidan.

The wonderful view of the church. The church is not quite visible from the outside road due to large hoardings put on the road side. However, its upper part is visible from the Gandhi Maidan.

Another view of the church. This church is a beautiful example of the Gothie style architecture. The most striking feature is the high bell tower with the pointed pinnacle over the four corner.

Shaheed Pir Ali Khan Park

Shaheed Pir Ali Khan Park is a small children's park situated at the Gandhi Maidan. This park is dedicated to the martyr Pir Ali who took part in the Patna uprising during 1857 struggle for freedom. This park is situated in-front of DM's residence, or Gandhi Sangrahalaya.

Patna College is one of the most popular college of Patna University. It was established in 1863. It is the second most oldest educational institution in entire Eastern India region. Patna College campus is very beautiful, having old buildings with great architecture. On one side, it faces Ashok Rajpath and on the opposite side it borders the river Ganges.

The beautiful building called Pandit Mahamahopadhyay Ramavatar Sharma Bhasha Bhavan is situated on the left to the entry gate.

Outside view of the Ewbank Shed. During summer, student enjoy in its shed and enjoy match, if it is being played on the ground. The characteristic gallery of the Patna College campus. Painted in red from outside, it blends beautifully with the surrounding ground. It run through the campus, connecting main buildings.

Inside view of the Ewbank Shed. The shed proves very useful during hot summer days whenever one has to go through the campus. The small brick wall on the both side of shed serves as seating benches for students during their leisure times.

NIT Patna Photos

National Institute of Technology (NIT) Patna is an autonomous institute under Ministry of HRD, New Delhi. It was established in 2004 by converting erstwhile Bihar College of Engineering (BCE) into NIT.

The main building of NIT. The historical building belonged to the Bihar College of Engineering (BCE) which was upgraded to the NIT status in 2004.

Patna Science College

Patna Science College is one of the most reputed college in the City. It was formally established as an independent college in 1927. Till then it used to function as a part of the Patna College. It now comes under the jurisdiction of Patna University. It has produced several notable personalities in its history.

Department of Physics. It also houses Computer Science related branches. Its classrooms reminds of its glorious past.

The Cycle Stand in front of Physics department. The remarkable building has off-let fallen into disarray due to negligence. Even today, two identical tokens are issued for each cycle/bike- one has to hang somewhere in the cycle/bike and other need to carry with yourself. Both tokens need to be produced while taking away bicycle or bike.

A chemistry lab in the Department of Chemistry. The Chemistry department building is the largest building in the campus. It is build in 'H' shape.

The Auditorium-cum-Geological museum in the campus, beside Department of Geology building.

The wooden cupboards in the Department of Chemistry. Every student get it for keeping the Chemistry lab related apparatus.

The Vinod Kaksha ( Entertainment room), beside Administrative building. It has also fallen into disarray. There is lack of equipment and other infrastructural facilities.

P & M Mall Patna Photos

P & M mall is the first mall of the city. It was opened in 2011. It is situated in the Kurji area. The mall has many branded shops. Big Bazaar occupies a good part of the mall. It also has Cinepolis for movie watching.

Kumhrar Park Photos

Kumhrar Park is a protected place by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) where the ruins of the 80-pillared hall of Mauryan era was discovered.

A pillar is kept for demonstration purpose. The remarkable finesse of the pillar even after more than 2000 years is amazing.

The probable design of the Mauryan hall. The vertical bars in the design is the pillars, one of which is kept for viewing on the surface.

The rest of the space has been covered with sand to avoid damages due to water logging and other factors. The excavated hall lies below this space.

The Dhanavantri Arogyasala of Gupta period was also found here. A replica of the same has been erected on the excavated place.

There is also a small museum in the park where few of the artifacts recovered during the excavation are kept for display. It has many remarkable photographs taken during the excavation. Patna Science Centre

Sri Krishna Science Centre in Patna is a great place for understanding the principles of Science through various demonstrations. It hold something for all the age groups, though children enjoys the most.

View of the Science centre from outside. It is situated near South-Eastern edge of the Gandhi Maidan. It is situated in a quite lane having lush green tress on either side of the lane.

Inside view of the science centre at the ground floor. The floor is named as 'Fun Science Gallery'.There are two upper floors also. A lot of experiments are displayed here. One can learn a lot through practical experiments than mere bookish theories.

The Energy Ball demo is worth watching.

3 - D show in progress. The show is of 20-minuted duration. A spectacle is provided for seeing the 3-D effect. Print quality is good, however audio quality need some improvement.

Around Gandhi Maidan

Gandhi Maidan is the center of the City. It is a big circular ground surrounded by a busy road and lot of important buildings like RBI, SBI, Red Cross, Police Headquarter, Udhyog Bhavan, Gandhi Sangrahalaya, St. Xavier, DM's residence, Sri Krishna Memorial Hall etc. The world's tallest bronzes statue of Mahatma Gandhi is also located in Gandhi Maidan. It is the venue of all important fairs, political rallies, major government functions like Republic Day etc. in the city.

Kargil Chowk. It was built after the Kargil war. The names of the martyrs are engraved here.

The Mona Multiplex. The earlier Mona Cinema went under renovation and is now known as Mona Multiplex. It is a popular place among the youngsters, especially the college going student of the Patna University.

The Regent Cinema in the Gandhi Maidan. It has also gone under renovation last year (2013).

The famed book market of Gandhi Maidan. It is here where you can find any kind of books, especially related to competitive examinations - original books, xeroxed books, pirated books, second-hand books etc. The price depends on one's bargaining skills.

Patna Zoo Photos

Patna Zoo, i.e. Sanjay Gandhi Botanical Garden is one of the most popular visiting place in Patna. It receives the highest number of visitors in the City. It is situated off the Bailey road. It is spread in an area of 153 acres. It is one of the largest zoo in the country. It boasts of a rich collection of flora and fauna.

The lake in the middle. One can enjoy boating on a pleasant day. However, during weekend or holiday, one may find getting boating tickets difficult. Boats are leased on hourly and half-hourly basis.

Patna zoo boasts of large number of animals and birds. It has one-horned rhinoceros, hippopotamuses, lions, tigers, giraffes, Zebras, elephants, leopards, crocodiles, variety of monkeys, birds, snakes etc.

Rhinos are kept at a distance. One has to cover a distance before they can see these majestic animals.

The Toy Train - takes a round of the Zoo at regular interval. It has a small station from where it starts. It has five compartments. Its route covers a good part of the zoo. It passes by most of the important enclosure in the zoo. It has also some halts, but it does not stop there.

Gainda (Rhinoceros) Halt - but the train does not stop here !!!

Entrance to Macchli Ghar (Fish Aquarium). It is situated in the middle of the lake. Separate ticket is applicable for it.

Golghar photos

Golghar, the beehive-shaped structure is one of the most recognizable landmark of Patna. One can enjoy witnessing the more than 300-years old historical monument, experience the thrill of ascending and descending on the winding staircase and seeing the wonderful view of the Ganges and the City from the top.

Gandhi Sangrahalaya

Gandhi Sangrahalaya is a Gandhian museum which highlights the work of Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Though not so popular among the visiting destination, one should try to spend some time in this quiet place, understanding the life of the Mahatma.

View from the entrance gate. The Sangrahalaya is situated in the North-West Corner of the Gandhi Maidan. One can easily reach here from any part of the city.

Unity in diversity - a sculpture inside the campus. The campus is dotted with a number of such sculpture which gives message on the number of themes.

Homage to Mahatma.

Albert Einstein - " Generations to come it may be will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this Earth " .
There are many boards containing homage to the Mahatma by different personalities.

Bapu sculpture inside the museum. The museum has many photographs giving details of Mahatma Gandhi's life. A sample piece of Gandhi's room is also on display.

Another sculpture of Mahatma inside the campus. Perhaps it is denoting the Gandhiji's experiment with truth.

Mahavir Mandir is a famous temple in Patna, dedicated to Lord Hanuman. It attracts huge devotees during festival times.

M V Ganga Vihar - The Floating Restaurant

A visit to Ganga Vihar can be a very refreshing moment. Taking a trip in the Ganges and watching the ghats and banks of Patna on a lovely evening can be very memorable.

The Bhagirathi Vihar at Ganga Ghat, behind NIT, from where the journey starts. Bhagirathi Vihar is the name of a restaurant at the Gandhi Ghat.

The ticket to the journey. The Floating Restaurant is managed by Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC). The ticket price is Rs 100 (as in 2011) per person. The average time duration if the tripis 45 minutes.

The inside view of the Floating restaurant M V Ganga Vihar. The open deck is situated one floor above which can be accessed through a narrow stair case. The deck provide a beautiful view of the city and the river Ganges. A small shop provides some light snacks during the normal trips.

A plaque in remembrance of the father of the nation at Gandhi Ghat. There are many things in Patna associated with Gandhi like Gandhi Maidan, Gandhi Sangrahalaya, Mahatma Gandhi Setu, Gandhi Ghat etc.

Wonderful view from the boat. The vast expanses of Ganga at Patna can mesmerize anyone during the monsoon period. Throughout the year, water level remains good in the river. The vast expanses of sand in the middle of the river, called Diara is becoming a favorite destinations for the revelers on New Year day.

Passing below the Mahatma Gandhi Setu. It is one of the largest bridges over river in India. It connects Patna with Hazipur on the other side f river Ganges. Its length is approximately 5.5 km.
