Street Construction Continues

Construction on neighborhood streets continues along South Louisville and Knoxville Avenues.

The paving and drainage work is progressing and new concrete has been poured on some sections. A good deal of the work near 47th Place has been completed, which has reduced a bottleneck at one of the neighborhood's busiest entry points.

This is the third and final phase of the street improvement projects in the Patrick Henry area.

Heard about the recent changes to Tulsa's curbside recycling program?
Did you check the City website for more details and find nothing?
Yeah, me too.

The official page on curbside recycling has conflicting information and my searches turned up nothing. Buried deep within the bowels of cityoftulsa.org there is a lonely little news release detailing the new policy on cardboard, metal and phone books.

New District Boundaries Unite Neighborhood

New 2011 boundaries for Tulsa City Council Districts, approved in June, will place all of the Patrick Henry Neighborhood within District 9. The new boundaries were suggested by city commissioners and based on public comments.

Previously the boundary placed the southern third of our neighborhood in District 7. Now the entire square mile- Harvard to Yale and 41st to 51st- is within District 9.

Precinct boundaries have not changed, although they will this December.

New City Council District Map and Locator

City Council primaries will be held September 13, and the Tulsa municipal elections are scheduled for November 8.

Candidates for the City Council District 9 Republican primary will be G. T. Bynum, Robert Dale Pinney and Kimberlee Flake Whiteman. Facing the winner in the general election will be Democrat Mike Batman.

As usual they will be providing a map with a list of all the garage sales in our neighborhood, posting a classified in the Tulsa World and putting up signs. Currently the City website devoted to street projects doesn't appear to be accurate. Hopefully they will update these maps soon, but in the meantime...

Have you bumped along Louisville lately?
I was beginning to wonder if the snow and ice were actually making that bumpy road smoother.

Back in August 2009 the Tulsa Public Works held a meeting to discuss street construction in the southern half of Patrick Henry. Those projects were scheduled to begin Summer 2010. But to date only preperatory utility work appears to have been performed.

Another meeting was planned for February 1st, but cancelled due to the Snowpocalypse. The new date is February 16, 2011 at the library near 31st and Harvard.

Snopocallypse

I know many of you are REALLY getting tired of being stuck inside and some of you are running out of supplies. With this last round of snow and more to come I thought I would offer to take anyone who is unable to get to the store a ride. I would prefer to take two or three people at once so I would like to try to coordinate the trips. Please call my cell 688-7775 to set up a ride. Steve put out the same offer on Facebook so I'm going to include in this :-)

I also have a few names and numbers for snow removal. If you know of someone who would like to be added to this list please let me know. Also please, please, please, remember this is a first call first serve basis. It also takes considerably more time to clear a drive and walks with the amount of snow we have had so be patient.

Harvard Closed for Removal of Skelly Drive Bridge

Today crews closed off Harvard Avenue to begin removal of the I-44 bridge sections.

The concrete bridges, built in 1956, are putting up a fight- but ODOT plans to have Harvard open to traffic by Monday.

Elections were held at the Neighborhood Association Meeting last night. The results were as follows:

Precinct 85 Polling Place Moved

Neighbors who usually vote at the Trade Winds Motel (voters in precinct 85) will be voting at the Elks Lodge this election. The temporary change is due to all the construction on I-44.

The Elk's Lodge is located at 5335 S. Harvard Avenue.

Can We Calm Our Traffic?

Since the widening of I-44 closed off most southern routes in and out of Patrick Henry, we've seen an overall increase in traffic. Additional traffic through our neighborhood has a lot of people talking about speeders. Or more precisely- how to slow them down!

Traffic engineers use the term "traffic calming" to describe devices or methods used to slow down drivers through congested areas and neighborhoods. One of the latest approaches has been the installation of speed humps. These are a longer and more gradual versions of the more abrupt speed bump. The idea is a vehicle traveling at the prescribed speed will pass over a speed hump with little or no disruption.

Speed humps are controversial. Some people hate them, others love the idea. What do you think?

Louisville Construction

Last week crews began work on gas lines in preparartion for a repaving job along South Louisville. The work involved trenching across the street and digging deep holes on each side.

Some of this caused problems in the 4700 block. The temporary patch used to fill the trench sunk and caused a pretty nasty bump. Residents tried to block the area with tree branches, and are still waiting for crews to arrive and smooth it over.

Ever had your house re-roofed?

We thought we had a nightmare when the original tar-and-gravel roof was removed to put down shingles. These folks are really having a new roof put on!

This is one of the model homes located on 41st Street between Sandusky and Pittsburgh. It's obviously undergoing some extensive renovations.

I can't wait to see the finished product!

Yale Cleaners at Harvard Square

No, it's not the latest trend in higher education.

The most recent developments at 41st and Harvard include plans for a new Yale Cleaners location. The owners would like to invite anyone that's interested to a short presentation on Thursday, July 22, 2010 at 6:30 PM. It will be held at the Memorial Baptist Church, 2800 South Yale Avenue in Tulsa.

This will be a public forum where residents can learn more and ask questions about the proposed project.

Town Hall meeting set for Feb 16, 2010

District 9 City Councilor G. T. Bynum will be hosting a town hall meeting Tuesday, February 16 at 6:00 PM to discuss the newly-released draft of Tulsa's comprehensive plan (dubbed "PlaniTulsa").

The meeting will be held at the Church of the Madalene (22nd & Harvard) in the Parish Hall.

This is the first time our City's comprehensive plan (which guides our decisions on land use, transportation, economic development and more) has been revised in over 30 years. City planning staff will be on hand to go over the plan with you and discuss your thoughts on the draft.

Says Councilor Bynum, "The final plan must be approved by the City Council, so it is very important to me that I hear what you think about it! I hope to see you there."

I-44 Work Continues

Construction will begin January 11, 2009 on I-44 between Yale Avenue and 41st Street, according to an article in the Tulsa World. Expect delays if traveling east of the neighborhood next week.

This widening project is not part of the major widening project between Riverside and Yale.

Billboard Variance Sought on Skelly Drive

Lamar Outdoor Advertising has been seeking a variance that would allow them to construct a billboard on Skelly Drive just east of Harvard.

The proposed site is at approximately 3400 East Skelly Drive, just east of the Trade Winds East hotel where the "castle" hotel used to be. Although the site in question is an empty lot, the variance is required because the billboard would be within 70 feet of a residential area.

An opinion poll was circulated last month via email and at the last Patrick Henry Neighborhood Association meeting. The poll asked residents what they thought about granting such a variance. So far the overwhelming response has been in opposition to allowing a billboard to be built.

Steve Summers and Toni Graber have attended numerous hearings on behalf of the neighborhood. They told me the feeling among Patrick Henry residents is that granting on variance on Skelly Drive will open the door for more billboards to follow. Skelly Drive between Yale and Harvard has been heavily cleared for the I-44 expansion. Neighbors are concerned about a "billboard farm" being created along the southern edge of Patrick Henry. The added light pollution a billboard would create is also a concern.

Last week the developers offered example images of billboard designs. The billboard in question would not be digital- but would be lighted. We have invited them to our next neighborhood meeting to offer more details on this project.

Neighborhood Clean Up Week-End

Saturday, October 17th and Sunday, October 18th

The Fall Free Landfill Days for Tulsans are scheduled for the above weekend.

The neighborhood association applied for dumpsters from the City of Tulsa but were turned down because we had them in the Spring.

If there is anyone with access to a/some dumpsters they could donate for this weekend please let us know. We also will need volunteers to help pick up trash from neighborhood curb-sides from those who are physically unable to get to the landfill. We also need volunteers with trucks and/or trailers.

Please contact Toni Graber if you are able to volunteer in any capacity.

Neighborhood Meeting with Crime and Safety

This meeting will include two guest speakers, Lori Fulbright from Channel 6 speaking on safety and Shannon Gibbons from Volunteers in Police Service.

Lori Fulbright is best known as the crime beat reporter and 5:00 o'clock news co-anchor for KOTV. She is a very exciting and informative speaker and the subjects she will be covering should be of interest to all ages.

Shannon Gibbons will speak briefly about becoming a volunteer for the City of Tulsa's Police Department in a clerical type of position. She is coordinator of the Volunteers in Police Service which began in 1986.

This coincides with the City of Tulsa Block Parties and we have applied for the Police and Fire departments to come and give demonstrations for the kids. Councilor Bynum has also been invited to attend. The Neighborhood Association will again supply the hamburgers, hot dogs and pop.
