The Sovereign Grace Church Home School Coop is getting ready for its annual "Year End Event" on Sunday night, May 3rd. Approximately 400 family members and friends attend this event to celebrate God's faithfulness through the school year. They could use 12 willing people to help serve food and clean up from 5:00-9:00 p.m. If you could serve at this event, please contact Susan Jorde at sjorde@sovgracefairfax.org by April 24th. They would be so grateful for your help.

IFC - Evangelism Training

Heidi Jensen (President of IFC and member of SGC) let me know about this evangelism training seminar being hosted by Cru and I thought you'd be interested. From Heidi:

I wanted to let you know that on Monday the 23, Cru is going to be hosting a small seminar on how to present the Gospel to our Muslim friends. It will be from 7-9 in SUB I room B, and the speaker is someone from Barnabas Aid (barnabasaid.org <http://barnabasaid.org> ) which is an organization that focuses on helping the persecuted church in the middle east.

I'm sure it will be helpful for anyone who can attend.

A Declaration of Autonomy

Our Introducing God topic for Tuesday night (2/24) is A Declaration of Autonomy. We'll be focusing on Genesis 3 and how man rebelled against God. We had a good discussion last week with the students who came and I'd encourage you to bring someone on Tuesday at 6:00 in Room E (JC third floor).

I was thinking this morning along the lines of Ephesians 3:8 "that though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ..." What a glorious privilege we have to share the gospel with friends!

God, Us and the Meaning of Life

That's our topic for tonight! We'll be looking specifically at what the Bible says from selected passages in Genesis 1-2 about God, Us and the Meaning of Life.

Come on out and bring a friend, and encourage everyone to bring lots of questions. This format is specifically designed to be a non-threatening, casual, yet purposeful time for people to interact with the basic truths of Christianity. We have a great time when there are differing viewpoints discussed!

Introducing God - Organizational Meeting on Saturday

FYI - I want to let you know that on Saturday morning (10:30 am), February 14 (tomorrow), I'm having a meeting at the church office for anyone interested in being involved with the leadership, organization, and/or administration of the Introducing God classes we're holding on Tuesday nights on campus. Everyone who is interested is welcome to attend and no RSVP required - just be here at 10:30.

Also, I realize there's a GMU basketball game at 12 noon, so we'll be done by 11:30 to make sure everyone has time to get to the game if they're going.

Paul's Ambition

A little encouragement from the Apostle Paul this morning from Romans 15:20:

"...and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else's foundation, but as it it written, 'Those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand.'"

A few questions to consider today: 1)What is your ambition today? 2) Does it include sharing the gospel with those who have "never been told of him" or "those who have never heard"?

Through prayer, I'm sure the Lord can/will lead you to talk with your friends who have never been told the gospel? Next Tuesday night at 6:00 in the JC we'll be having our next Introducing God class. Free pizza and soda! Come join us.

Change of Plans - Meeting on Wednesday

Change of plans - I originally said we would meet tomorrow night (Tuesday) but because of the inauguration, we've decided to move the meeting to Wednesday night at the JC at 6:00 p.m. Please meet at the information kiosk on the main level. I'll order some pizza and then we can find some seats to talk. I know this is late-breaking-news so please let people know who you think might be interested in attending.

Introducing God

Great news! We received word from the University that we have a room in the JC from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday nights beginning on Februray 10. Now that we have a place to meet we need to have a meeting to talk about the material we're going to cover (it's called Introducing God) and about inviting people to attend. I'd like to meet on Tuesday, January 20 (first day back for classes!) at 6:00 in the JC (more details to come).

Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered, o offspring of Abraham, his servant, children of Jacob, his chosen ones!

Miracles???

Last week one of our guests at the GMU campus Alpha said he’d like to know more about miracles, and he wanted to know if we knew about any miracles that we could talk about this Tuesday night. A few thoughts: 1) people who are interested in learning about Christianity ask great questions, and 2) the questions they ask provoke me to study more so I can be prepared “in season and out of season” to provide helpful responses.

I am blessed each Tuesday night to be on campus with our students and their friends talking about the good news of Jesus Christ. If you haven’t been attending, it’s not too late to bring a friend that you’ve been reaching out to. We are meeting tomorrow night (Lecture Hall 2 at 6:00 - pizza and drinks provided).

We know from God’s Word (1 Pe. 1:1) that we are “elect exiles” which means that our true citizenship is in heaven. As such, when we think about how to engage our world we must think about our citizenship here on earth through the lens of our citizenship in heaven. By actively participating in the world God has placed us in (i.e. voting), we express our love for God and our neighbors by promoting God’s moral agenda.

Some suggestions:
1. Pray - Prayer is a humble expression of our dependence on God.
2. Prepare - Take some time to be an educated voter.
3. Prioritize - Ask yourself which issues are most important from God’s perspective.
4. Plan - Determine to set aside time to go vote.
5. Participate - Go vote tomorrow.
6. Praise - No matter the outcome tomorrow, God is sovereignly in control of all things.

Alpha - Tuesday Night

Bring your friends! We’ll provide pizza and drinks for dinner and then have a Q&A time to talk about whatever the students would like to talk about. The students who have been attending seem to really like asking questions so we’re adjusting our format a bit to leave time for this kind of dialogue. Personally, I think this is going to be a lot of fun because the format will resemble my Thursday morning coop classes and the lunches I had on campus with the guys over the past couple of years.

We meet in Lecture Hall 2 from 6:00 to 7:00 tomorrow night (Tuesday). Come check it out and bring a friend (or two or five). VH

Caregroup This Week

We pray you had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday weekend. This week our CareGroup schedule looks a little different so please note these changes:

GUYS: Please meet at the church on THURSDAY October 16^th at 7:00. Please bring $3.00 each to help cover the cost of pizza. Vince will be joining us for the evening to lead in discussion similar to his past lunch meetings at GMU. Please bring questions, anythingâ€™s game!

LADIES: Please meet at the church on FRIDAY October 17^th at 4:00. We will be carpooling early up to Gaithersburg to avoid traffic and grabbing dinner there before the ladies meeting at 7:00. If you are unable to meet at 4:00 then we can have a later group meet at 5:30 to carpool up and join us at Covenant Life Church. Please RSVP with Bethany to let her know which carpool group you plan to join.

Membership Commitment

Quick Reminder: If you’re a member of the church, we’d like to get your signed copy of the Membership Commitment turned in by the end of August. Extra copies are available at the Welcome Center and there will be copies on the stage after the meeting. I know that some of you still have questions about the document so I’d like to encourage you to please meet with one of the pastors either after the Sunday meeting or set up a time to come in and see us. We consider it a blessing and a privilege to serve the Lord with you.
