New England Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss doesn't "feel wanted" by the Patriots and hasn't received a long term extension from the team.

New England Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss, who has kept silent for most of training camp, expressed some frustration Monday afternoon about not having a contract beyond this season.

“When you have done so much and put so much work in, it kind of feels like I am not wanted,” Moss told CBSSports.com. “I am taking that in stride and playing my final year out and whatever the future holds is what it holds, but it is kind of a bad feeling — feeling not wanted. It is not like my production has gone down. I am speaking from an individual standpoint. I don’t know about Tom (Brady’s) or whoever else’s contract.

“I am a little older and understand the nature of the business — the older you get the more your skills supposedly diminish, but I think I am getting wiser in how to use my physical skills. That’s the frustrating part when you put so much heart and desire into things and feel like you are not wanted.”

Moss, 33, is entering the final year of a three-year contract and will earn $6.4 million this season. Last season, Moss caught 83 passes for 1,246 yards and 13 touchdowns. Moss is not the only Patriot with contract concerns heading into the 2010 season. Quarterback Tom Brady is entering the final year of his contract, while Pro Bowl offensive lineman Logan Mankins is currently locked in a contract dispute that will likely drag out into the season with a lengthy holdout. Moss has been a key contributor for the Patriots since joining the team during the 2007 off season. Moss saved his career with his record breaking season and attitude on and off the field that season after being viewed as a disgruntled selfish player in Oakland.

Moss made similar comments to the Boston Globe in February during the off season. “I don’t think they are going to extend my contract here.”

“You know the Patriots don’t really pay, so when I got my second contract from them that was a blessing in disguise. I understand the business. I don’t think they’re going to re-sign me back. I’m not mad. I’m not bitter. It’s just the way things are in this NFL, so like I said after this year I’ll be looking for a new team. I think so.”

Highlights from New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick's 10:30 a.m. press conference.

The New England Patriots are working hard at Gillette Stadium preparing for their Week 1 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, and here are the highlights from head coach Bill Belichick’s 10:30 a.m. press conference this morning, as provided by ESPN Boston.com’s Mike Reiss:

Coaches introduce game-plan Sunday; preparations increase today. Belichick opened by talking about the Bengals, saying he introduced the players to Bengals-specific information Sunday, but will really increase the workload on Cincinnati today. Belichick talked about all the information and unknowns that goes in to planning for the opener.

Getting a feel for new safety Jarrad Page. “He’s played in the league, we played against him, he’s been a productive player. I’m glad we got him. I think he’ll be a good addition to the group. I think he’ll help us. It looks like he’s been able to do some different things in the past and we’ll see how all that fits in with us.”

Explaining the Derrick Burgess cut. “We had to reduce our roster and we kept the players that are best for our team going forward. That’s pretty much what it comes down to. Derrick came in, worked hard, got off to a late start this year, we just went with different players.”

Would he consider a Jets-like move to reach out to Logan Mankins? When it comes to Mankins’ contract standoff, Belichick was asked if he would consider doing something similar to Jets coach Rex Ryan, who flew to meet with Revis as part of courting him to return to New York. “I’m really not familiar with all that. I don’t know what everybody else does,” Belichick said. “I’m going to coach the team, do the best I can for our team here. That’s what I’ll do.”

Shawn Crable healthy after passing physical. Belichick said Crable, who was one of four announced signings on the practice squad, will be on the field today after passing his physical. “Shawn hasn’t had a whole lot of opportunity to play since he’s been here,” Belichick said. “As he gets a little more experience and plays more, we’ll see how he does.”

ESPN analyst Herm Edwards gave newly acquired Patriots safety Jarrod Page a glowing review in an interview with the Boston Herald.

So what exactly did the Patriots bring in Saturday when they acquired safety Jarrod Page from Kansas City for a conditional draft pick?

The Boston Herald spoke to ESPN analyst Herm Edwards, who coached the Patriots newly acquired safety in Kansas City from 2006-2008. It was Edwards who drafted Page in the seventh round in 2006, then proceeded to start him as a rookie.

“They’re getting a very smart football player, and Bill likes smart players,” Edwards said. ”He’s got great instincts. He can play in the box. He can cover tight ends. But his ball skills are what really make him stand out a little bit ahead of a lot of other guys. He’s got great anticipation. He’s just a really good football player. I really liked him.”

Page, a 6-foot, 225-pounder out of UCLA, may be asked to fill the void left by veteran safety Brandon McGowan who was placed on injured reserve this week. McGowan’s role in certain packages on defense for New England was to mainly cover the tight end and support the run.

“You can put him out in space where he can cover a tight end. He’s done that,” said Edwards. “He can also play in the box. But when you can get him to just react to the football and just play the ball, that’s what he does best. He can really play the football. He’s got good hands.”

The 25 year old Page was in search of a new home this past offseason after refusing to sign his restricted free agent tender offer from Kansas City. Hopefully a change of scenery will be exactly what Page needs to become an impact defender at the safety position once again. Paige has excellent size for his position, and much like McGowan is big enough where he is almost like having an extra linebacker on the field.

Head coach Bill Belichick has been looking for a prototypical Rodney Harrison clone for years now, remember the Tank Williams experiment a couple years ago? In this past April’s NFL Draft, Taylor Mays seemed like a perfect fit for this defense, but the Patriots passed on the USC product who fell from a consensus top 15 pick a year earlier to a mid-second round selection with San Francisco. Hopefully, Belichick has found the safety he can mold into the imposing presence Harrison used to be for this defense in the late stages of his career. Only time will tell whether or not this acquisition pays off for New England.

The New England Patriots announced today that they have waived second-year inside linebacker Tyrone McKenzie.

McKenzie, a 2009 third-round draft pick out of South Florida, was listed behind rookie Brandon Spikes and third-year player Gary Guyton on the depth chart at the spot next to Jerod Mayo. Undrafted rookie free agent Dane Fletcher now takes McKenzie’s spot on the depth chart. This is just another footnote in a series of puzzling moves by the Patriots over the past two days.

Given McKenzie’s draft status and the fact that he was coming off a torn ACL that cost him all of his rookie season, his release is a big surprise. McKenzie had a strong preseason and survived the final cuts yesterday. McKenzie is eligible for the Patriots practice squad if he clears waviers.

In addition to McKenzie’s release, the club verified the acquisitions of Jarrad Page and linebacker Tracy White in separate trades, as well as the fact they were awarded tackle Steve Maneri off waivers from Houston. One final note, wide receiver Darnell Jenkins has cleared waviers and will be signed to the Patriots practice squad.

The New England Patriots have signed outside linebacker Shawn Crable to their practice squad, agent Ralph Cindrich said on Twitter.

Crable, a third-round draft choice of the Patriots in 2008, was waived by the team prior to the start of training camp after failing his physical and had not been picked up by another club. Crable has been injury plagued throughout his young career, but has always looked physically like he could have a major impact in the Patriots system. Its nice to see Crable get a second chance with the Patriots organization.

A number of Boston media outlets are reporting that undrafted rookie free agent Sergio Brown has reportedly cleared waviers and will be signed by the New England Patriots to their practice squad. Brown, a safety from Notre Dame was a special teams standout in the preseason, but was wavied by the Patriots as one of their final cuts yesterday. This is good news for the future of the Patriots special teams, which took a hit yesterday with the release of veteran special teams aces Sam Aiken, Pierre Woods, and Eric Alexander.

According to ESPN Boston.com's Mike Reiss, the New England Patriots have claimed offensive tackle Steve Maneri off waviers from the Houston Texans.

ESPN Boston.com’s Mike Reiss is reporting that the New England Patriots have claimed offensive tackle Steve Maneri off waviers from the Houston Texans, according to his agent Ed Wasielewski’s Twitter.

Maneri (6-7, 290) is a rookie out of Temple who played tight end in college. NFL teams had been interested in him as a tight end and tackle in the pre-draft process.

After going undrafted, Maneri elected to sign with the Texans because he wanted to play tackle. He lined up primarily at left tackle in the preseason.

This marks the second straight year that the Patriots have gone the waiver route to claim a tackle, as Mark LeVoir was claimed from the Rams in 2009. In claiming Maneri, the Patriots will have to make a corresponding roster move to stay within the NFL’s 53-man roster limits.

The New England Patriots have signed offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger to their practice squad today. Rookie offensive lineman Ted Larsen was claimed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Patriots made a flurry of moves yesterday, including releasing twenty players from the active roster. One of those players who was waived, second-year center/guard Rich Ohrnberger, has cleared waivers and will return to the Patriots as a member of their eight man practice squad. Another player who was a practice squad candidate, rookie offensive lineman Ted Larsen, was claimed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers off waviers.

The team’s 2009 fourth-round pick started the preseason finale against the Giants at right guard and was credited by Bill Belichick for doing a “good, solid job” against top competition. Ohrnberger’s return adds more depth at guard, where the Patriots are extremely thin with Logan Mankins not reporting to camp and Nick Kaczur sidelined after back surgery.

Larsen was a sixth round draft choice of the Patriots this year, but failed to make the final roster after an up-and-down preseason. If Larsen had cleared waviers he would likely have been brought back on the practice squad. Larsen is just another example of the risk teams take when they expose a player to waviers.

The New England Patriots announced today that safety Brandon McGowan's season is over because of a chest injury.

In yet another tough blow for the Patriots secondary, the team placed veteran safety Brandon McGowan on season-ending injured reserve with a chest injury.

McGowan, a six-year veteran, was not projected to start, but would have been used in a variety of substitution packages as well as special teams for the Patriots this season. McGowan’s injury likely led the team to trade for Kansas City safety Jarrad Page, who will occupy not only his roster spot, but McGowan’s role as well in 2010.

With the loss of McGowan and cornerback Leigh Bodden (torn rotator cuff) to season-ending injured reserve, the Patriots depth in an extremely young secondary is being tested before the season even begins.
