K-5 Drumming

During the month of September, most classes were drumming. Through drumming, we are able to learn about and experience many different elements of music, such as tempo, dynamics, texture, beat and rhythm to name a few. We also have the added benefits of learning classroom expectations and procedures. In addition, students learn to listen and work together in ways they may not have experienced before. For instance, when the bass drums first play in the video below, they aren't quite together. They depend on the part that comes in right after them to know when to play. As soon as the second part comes in, they instantly improve. All of the parts in this piece of music have to do that in one way or another. In order to keep playing your part, you have to listen to all of the people who are playing something completely different. We can't stop listening, because then our different parts won't work together and will sound like a big jumbled mess. Students have been given different tools to help them through this. Toward the end of the video, you will hear the shekeres (rattles) come in. Soon after, you will hear them chanting words that match their part. Each part has it's own set of words that can be used to get a player back on track. We also watch each other. Sometimes seeing someone playing the part is just as helpful as hearing it. Playing in a large group with multiple parts like this requires more than just hearing, it requires listening with your brain.

2nd Grade Dynamics

This week, students in 2nd grade have been learning about dynamics. In the following video, you will see an activity where students use their bodies to follow the soft and loud in the piece of music. The voice overs are of students explaining what they were doing and what they learned.

The first week back was short, but great. I am so excited to get to know all of your kids again this year. The concert schedule has already been set, so please take a moment note concert dates that are applicable to your family. Also, if you have a child in Fran Rafalski's class or Ruth Hurwitz's class, he/she will also be joining in his/her grade level concert.

Happy New Year!

The music room has been very busy and we are very excited to show you what we have been doing this year! I hope you all plan to attend your children’s concerts. They have worked really hard this year and are looking forward to sharing what they have learned with you. Below you will find the concert schedule. If you wish to know more about what each grade level is working on, please visit Pattengill Elementary Music. Here you will find concert information, samples of student work, and explanations of what we have been, and will be working on throughout the school year.

Concert Information

Thank you for planning to come to your child's concert! Students should arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled concert time and sit in their assigned spots. They should sit where they normally would in class (front row in front), except on risers. All concerts take place in the Pattengill gym. Students should wear a brightly colored shirt and dark pants. See you there!

Hello Penguins!

Students at Pattengill are currently working on a variety things. Young 5's and kindergarten are currently focusing on keeping a steady beat. We have been listening to a lot of great songs that help us do this in many ways. Most recently, we have been using bean bags to keep the beat by picking them up, dropping them, and tossing them back and forth VERY GENTLY.

In the spirit of fall, the 3rd graders have been focusing on how music makes us feel (affect). For now we are working mostly with scary music, but will expand to other feelings later in the year. We begin by listening to music that society would deem "spooky" such as the theme to The Twilight Zone and Jaws. We then try to pinpoint what the musicians do to make it scary. Through this exploration, we cover many elements (tempo, dynamics, rhythm, etc...) of music in a very meaningful way. Students then get to create their own scary music in small groups.

4th grade is currently reviewing what they learned about notation last year by playing the keyboards. This is also in preparation for their continued recorder unit later this year. They will be starting a unit on texture before the end of the month, which has to do with the different layers (instruments, voice parts) of music.

Several grade levels (1st, 2nd, and 5th) are working on songwriting. This project differs depending on the grade level, but the students choose a topic, write lyrics and create the melody for every song. I usually come up with several piano parts for them to choose from. We then practice, record the songs and compile them into a school CD! It is hard work, but a lot of fun. Students have to combine their knowledge of music with writing skills and end up with a wonderful finished product! One group just finished adding their melody today, which you can find below!

This month, most of the classes here at Pattengill have been working on African drumming. We use a variety of instruments such as tubanos, double bells, cowbells, and shekeres. We will add more instruments as we progress through the year. Through drumming we are able to focus on steady beat, rhythm, and our own roles when playing in a group. Though we will continue to use drums throughout the year, focusing on them right now establishes a great foundation for how to take care of classroom instruments and the rules for using them.

After drumming, most classes will begin songwriting. These are the songs that will be on our school CD at the end of the year. If you did not get a chance to order a CD last year, you may do so at the link below. Also, this year I have started a blog to keep you up to date on what we are doing in the music room throughout the year. This is also a place where you can contact me, find forms that you may need, and students may even request songs to do in music class! There is also a page that shows some of the instruments that the music class has been able to purchase through donations along with short explanations. On behalf of the entire school, thank you very much for all of these instruments! We could not have them without you!

Welcome back students! I hope everyone had a great summer and am looking forward to another great year with all of you! School CDs from the 2011-2012 school year are still available. If you would like to purchase one, bring $2 in an envelope to the music room with your name and your teacher's name on it. This year, we will be working on many different things in music class. I will be posting some of your compositions on this blog as well as class songs.

One of the things that we will be focusing on this year is what composers are trying to say through their music. What can they say? How do they say things without words? In that spirit, what do you think this picture is trying to say?
