Less tile print and more motif driven. Simple mandala and medallion shapes as all over prints and placed. Slightly more geometric than seasons passed. The focus is more on the singular motif that creates a pattern rather than multiple pieces that are mirrored and reflected. Neutral color influenced by natural elements like sand and cement.

DYE EFFECTS

Tied, iced, pigment, dipped dyed is a printing technique that is becoming a staple for Summer. For SS19, it was showing in more non-casual styles. For SS20, there is a continuation of that on a more brighter and bolder way. Unusual color combinations and experimentations in layouts. Slightly less shibori and indigo that seasons passed. These dye effects are still casual friendly and can be dressed up on high end pieces as well. A nod to the artisanal and organic techniques are showing up on synthetic fabrics with organic cottons and luxe silks. Color is a mixed combination of colors that naturally bleed and blend into each other.

NOVELTY PLAIDS

Painted, abstract, clean - this is everything but the traditional yarn dye patterns. Plaids are showing up in a big way in general. Starting to see the painted plaid feeling new again. It has a slightly softer, organic hand to it. Graphic clean plaids, more like lines of color on top of each other rather than having the colors cross and appear cross-dyed or a blend of each other. Vibrant colorations with a lot of white.

FIXED GEOS

At first glance this print idea has a 60’s vibe to it. Does feel retro with a subtle modern twist. For SS20, geos are a little more rigid and repetitive than what we’ve been seeing. Graphic and linear. The shapes within the geos are slightly softer though. It’s very nuanced - but makes a huge difference from looking too nostalgic. Color is bold & clean, grounded in black & white.

ROSE FLORALS

Romantic roses in all renderings - vintage, painted, illustrative versions - in all scales. We haven’t really been seeing the rose as its own motif as a trend in a few seasons. This go around, the rose is the highlight. Less cabbage rose, more of the Rosa “Mr. Lincoln” hybrid tea rose is showing up. Color is traditional, red, pinks & the shades in between paired back to a slightly off shade saturated color like a punchy green or acid yellow.

PREPPY PRINT MIX

While this may be a lifestyle for some rather than a trend, traditional preppy styling and print mixing is emerging in a big way. Simple dots with stripes, classic plaids and oxfords in home and in apparel. What feels new for SS20 is that this preppy styling isn’t as territorial as it once was. We are seeing Southern preppy style mixed with Northern and a European twist. While this may confuse the purists, as a trend it makes sense as another element of the mixing, mash-ups and layering. Color is bright, classic and vibrant.

Layered Sheers

A little more sheer than the translucent semi-sheers of Spring 19. What’s nice about these layered sheers idea is that it’s not just for solid fabric. Consider using this technique with pattern development and techniques such as burn outs or 3-dimensional layered pigments or flocking on sheers. Because of the nature of the fabric, color is not bright or saturated. The color gets picked up by its surroundings and can look different from each angle or each end user.

BORDER PRINTS

Coming off of all the scarf prints of FW 19, border prints are the next evolution for 2020. Seen as actual large scale bottom borders and as multiple border sections pieced together. Motifs can be anything. A mix of florals, geos, paisleys and anything in between. Still has a sense of a print mix, just a little more deliberate that seasons past. Also, traditionally this style of print has had more of a boho appeal, we’re seeing for 2020 as more controlled and precise line quality and layout. Hence, fitting in with the Refined Optimism macro trend. Color is clean and bright grounded back to shades of white and black.

Festival Embellishment

Raves, Burning Man, Coachella and most other music festivals started as an underground scene for some. At one point it was a part of a dual life that festival goers or ravers kept secret. Today it has become a mainstream part of life. Loud and proud. A chance for people to gather, connect and express themselves. What was once a sub-culture is now somewhat of a social standard of being over the top. Naturally, adornment and embellishments are too. Color is vibrant, iridescent and visually stimulating.

Terrazzo Geo

Inspired by terrazzo floors, which has bits and pieces of marble, glass, rocks & other textures bound by concrete. This print idea is more of a spaced out organic geo rather than a literal interpretation. All sizes. Starting to see color emerge as a muted bright mixed back to concrete neutrals. Similar to a weathered floor that has some bright spots and dull spots.

Fairytale Fair Isle

This knitted classic is showing up in a new way. Not quite as preppy as seasons past. This go around the fair isle has a slight rebellious & forward aesthetic. These patterns may feel a bit more nostalgic to a different era while feeling modern & youthful in styling. Seeing this as more of an actual knit pattern rather than printed. Both cut & sew & fully fashioned. For Fall / Winter 19, there is an exploration of technique, stitch width, pattern & placement. There is more of a mash-up of shapes in these fair isles - some Nordic, Scottish & even Aztec influence all in one pattern. Staying with the tradition of 5 colors or less, these fair isles have more quirky color combinations instead of muted neutrals.
