Twitter recently suspended the account of Guy Adams, a British newspaper reporter for The Independent, after he posted complaints about NBC’s tape-delayed Olympics coverage. His posts included the e-mail address of Gary Zenkel, the head of NBC Olympics. The problem was that Twitters explicit policy states that it does not monitor the tweets of its users. BUT, NBC and twitter are bedfellows regarding social media coverage of the London games.

What has been a terrible PR debacle for Twitter and NBC has been a bonus for the reporter, now infamous for being outed by Twitter.

Mr. Adams said he had about 4,500 followers before he was kicked off Twitter. By Tuesday night, after Twitter reinstated his account, he had 16,300 followers.

Here’s another story about the mess and the implications worth checking out from the New York Times.

This interesting story in the Miami Herald discusses the daily ritual in my household. We can go on line and read/watch who has captured the gold and get real time standings, or we can WAIT for the long, drawn out NBC TV presentation of what they edit and want to show us complete with commercial interruption. I generally do both.

This is excerpted from an interesting article I came across this morning and I agree that the e-mail experience needs upgrading.

“… despite huge increases in the volume of email we deal with in the last eight years, little has been done to improve the core experience. Yes, Google launched Priority Inbox. It’s supposed to help you figure out the important mail; for me, it’s been largely useless. Scanning through my inbox, very little of what Google has marked important really is.

Google’s other major moves with Gmail have largely been about trying to exploit its huge number of mail users into whatever lame social product Google is trying to bootstrap. (Remember Buzz?)

But better email tools could improve productivity for everyone. In the current version of Outlook mail, there isn’t enough innovation to get me to switch. But the existence of a new and credible player who wants to win may drive much-needed innovation in email. Here are some core things that would get me to switch by delivering value, not by tricking people like Facebook tried to do:”

Andrew and I were having one of those random “technology” conversations this morning in the office. I marvel as I watch the Olympics and how technology is able to determine the difference between Gold and Silver medalists down to a 100th of a second and wonder if the silver medalists before this technology came along are scratching their heads wondering if they really won years ago? Andrew was thinking about technology in regard to how quickly we discard it and move on to the next greatest thing. His robotics team was searching for a serial to USB port connector. Who makes those anymore? I had one in a drawer unopened! Our attention turned to a trailer for the new Bourne Legacy movie coming out in just a few days. (Can’t wait) Then I stumbled upon this story and the findings of two very enterprising medical students at the Defcon Hacker Conference. They believe “that the day is not so distant when we will be able to “mod” our organic bodies with inorganic mechanical and electronic materials that enhance our augment our basic abilities. They refer to the coming era of human augmentation as “transhumanism.”

Whoa!

Every once in a while you run into a really good idea on the web, a Social Media Will. Yes, a will as in what to do after you die. This all comes home to me since my 100 year old father died this past January. I am an only child do everything was my responsibility, but my father had carefully set everything up so I had to make very few decisions. Since he grew up not using computers, social media was not a big concern. His death did start my thoughts to think of what might happen if I died. I know I have work to do on this because my will is very old and doesn’t reflect my current situation. Additionally, I had never thought about what might happen to things like my Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn,7 email accounts, several passworded computers and many Blogs if I died. As I think of it the idea just overwhelms me.

I certainly do not want these things to be a burden to my children. Additionally, I have some concern about how someone (not authorized) might use this information. I am not a wealthy person and I do not have a well-known reputation and in many was I am rather average. Imagine he problem for famous people! Most of us aren’t famous but some may have greater media exposure than others. What is to be done?

It turns out that someone in the US Government has thought about this and has written about it in their USA.gov Blog. The article in full is How and Why You Should Write a Social Media Will. In short there are recommendations about appointing an executor for your Social Media. That executor would have access to your Death Certificate and information about your Social Media accounts, including passwords. Passwords change frequently so up to date information would be advisable. A document that is signed and notarized appointing the executor for Social Media might be advisable. That way the executor could go to media site representatives with that document and your death certificate to gain access if passwords were changed or lost. This all sounds a bit like creating a Social Media Will and I think that is the idea. The Social Media Will would additionally contain instructions about the disposition of your Media profiles and other information.

My father’s generation had few if any worries about Social Media Legacy, but my generation clearly does. As the “Baby Boomer” generation cycles through this will become a greater concern. I grew up in a time when there were few computer devices. Today they are all pervasive and there seems to be no end in sight. Social Media Wills are essential now and will continue to be a part of life planning. I suggest that you start your Social Media Will sooner than later.

Your employees are spending more and more time on their mobile devices and social media websites. So can you make use of these tools in your employee wellness program?

According to U.S.-based incentaHEALTH, you not only can you should.

The health technology company surveyed more than 2,000 participants in its own wellness programs and asked them about the role social media plays in managing their wellness.

It found that 80% of respondents are looking at text messages on a daily basis, and 91% of respondents are on Facebook—statistics the company is now using to shape its offerings. The company says it has implemented a “push” model that delivers wellness information to employees via social media and mobile access, such as daily text message coaching and a Brag to Facebook feature.

Social science is the study of society and human behaviors. As an umbrella term, we should think about social media and mobile behavior as it’s related to psychology, anthropology, communication, economics, human geography, et al. After all, everything comes down to people.

Unfortunately in new media, we tend to put technology ahead of people. Think about your current social media, mobile, or web strategy for a moment. Do you even know who you’re trying to reach? Do you know what customers or stakeholders expect or the challenges they face? Are you familiar with how they connect and communicate and why? Lastly, do you understand the journey they take to make decisions?
