Drake Doresmus Talks about ''Equals'' with Los Angeles Times

Doremus is next set to direct “Equals,” a futuristic romance he aims to shoot this year. With Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult starring, it certainly has a bigger feel. (Essentially it’s about an uber-rationalist society that’s been stripped of all romantic feeling, seemingly to its betterment, and what happens when a man starts developing emotions again.)

Of course, as he's Drake Doremus, he’s hardly doing it the conventional way either. The movie will be shot in Tokyo (Doremus wanted the futurism the city can offer) and financed not by a studio but with Indian Paintbrush, an independent company that bankrolled Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom” as well as “Like Crazy.”

“It feels more commercial to me," he said of the new project. "Maybe some people would need to do something even more commercial. But it needs to feel like me." He paused, “Like I said, life’s too short.”

THE LIMO DRIVER

“Plus we’re both dual-disorder”

When Agatha Weiss returns to Los Angeles, she makes an instant connection with the first person she encounters: her limo driver, a would-be screenwriter who chauffeurs the far more successful, and who becomes increasingly entangled in her larger-than-life drama.

Taking the role of Jerome is leading star Robert Pattinson, who wanted to work with Cronenberg again on the heels of taking the lead role in Cosmopolis (coincidentally, Pattinson played a billionaire who is a limo passenger throughout that film.)

He was one of the first cast members to sign on, which Martin Katz says helped buy the project. “Robert’s enthusiasm for Maps to the Stars is one of the things that really got us underway. Jerome is not a large role but it’s very significant in the story and his joining the cast gave us a terrific amount of momentum,” recalls the producer. “In a sense he is playing Bruce Wagner, who was himself at one time a limo driver and unemployed writer.”

Cronenberg was thrilled to reunite with Pattinson, and in such a different kind of role. “I think Rob was really happy to be part of an ensemble,” he says. “But Jerome is also a critical character, a lovely character and it was a chance for Rob to give a more naturalistic performance. I knew he would be fabulous and he was.”

Pattinson’s experience working on Cosmopolis with Cronenberg was so profound that he agreed to the role of Jerome before reading the script. But when he finally sat down to read it, he recalls, “Within two pages I was thinking wow, this is so unbelievably different and hilarious. I don't even know what people are going to make of this, but it feels dangerous. It’s sort of satirical but it’s also a ghost story and it’s also a kind of thriller. It defies genre.”

He came to see Maps To The Stars as more than just another L.A. story. “It’s really about people who lie to themselves – right up until the end,” he summarizes.

Yet within all that, Pattinson sees Jerome as the most ordinary of the film’s roster of outrageously deluded and desperate characters -- typical of a certain kind of everyday L.A. dreamer, a regular guy with a regular job who nevertheless always believes he is just one move away from becoming a major actor and writer.

“Jerome would never accept that he is just a limo driver. I think he feels he’s just waiting for his break,” Pattinson observes. “And yet, he’s seemingly the only one in this story who's not going insane -- or who isn’t a ghost. He's a fairly normal guy, which is slightly odd for me, as well.”

Working with his fellow cast members was another big draw for Pattison. Of Julianne Moore, he says: “She’s hilarious and also very sane, which is kind of ironic given who Havana Segrand is. And she shifts so subtly into character, you barely notice what she is doing. It’s kind of amazing.”

He worked most closely with Mia Wasikowska as Agatha, who comes to rely on Jerome as her sole friend in the city. “I knew Mia was going to be wonderful in this,” he says. “She’s so lovely that it was horrible for me to watch Agatha be bullied by her entire family.”

For Cronenberg, the chance to work with cast members like Pattinson and Gadon multiple times is one of the most gratifying aspects of his career. “It's really beautiful for me to see that blossoming and the evolution of actors as I work with them,” he concludes.

Directed by David Michôd and based on a story written by the director himself paired with Joel Edgerton, The Rover is set in Australia a decade after the collapse of the western economy, in a context in which the mines are still active and have attracted men more desperate and dangerous and where survival is a daily struggle. The protagonist of the story is Eric, a drifter who has left everything behind and who is full of anger at the theft by a gang of his car, the only thing he had left. His only chance of finding the car is given by Rey, one of the Mebra band which was abandoned after being injured. Forced by circumstances, the two men will pair up for a trip that no one could have predicted the outcome.

Notwithstanding take place in the near future, The Rover is the intention of the authors work on the contemporary, the ability of Western economies to self-destruct because of their own greed and the inevitable change in the balance of power globally. Speaking of issues ranging from the lust for power to the destruction of the environment through the desperate attempts of man to not sink in that dysfunctional society, The Rover, however, is not a dystopian film and described the situation, that of a world pillaged and drained forces and systems quite real, plausible and possible.

As a sort of futuristic western, as a backdrop to the story is the ‘outback ’Australia, where people from all over the world come to work in the mines which supply the new world order in the hands of Asia: Australia has the same partially avoided the economic collapse in 2008 thanks to exports to China and the strength of its mining industry.

Photographed by Natasha Braier, who has opted for the Super 35 format, The Rover was shot over seven weeks (from 28 January to 16 March 2013) in the southern desert of Australia, in the chain of the Flinders Ranges. Among the various places that were the location, the most important is the town of Marree , eight hours drive from Adelaide and close to Lake Eyre. Populated by only 90 inhabitants, Marree is the last frontier of civilization before arriving in the desert and gladly hosted the crew of Michôd, providing the designer Josephine Ford homes and a small hotel.

THE MAIN CHARACTERS

The main characters of The Rover are two very different men. The first, Eric, is a violent and bitter Australian, a former soldier Misanthrope who lost his farm and his family and anti-hero, not want to regain back what was stolen from three criminals: the car with a mysterious bunch. The second, Rey, is a simple and naive American youngster, whose age does not allow him to remember the time when things were different. Like many other individuals of The Rover, Rey arrived in Australia along with his elder brother Henry to find work in the mining sector and is found to interact with Chinese, Cambodians and of course, ending with the Aussies find themselves in legal actions soon harnessed by Henry and his two friends Archie and Caleb.

Played by Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, the two men throw in pursuit of dangerous individuals, finding himself caught up in an ongoing series of action, tension, danger and plot twists. Along the way, also, find themselves having to face even the folds of their emotional confusion.

The actor Scott McNairy plays Henry, the elder brother of Rey, while the main cast of The Rover ’s David names includes Field (Archie), Tawanda Manyimo (Caleb), and Gillian Jones, Anthony Hayes and Susan Prior.”

Written by Bruce Wagner and directed by David Cronenberg, Maps to the Stars weaves the rugged beauty of Los Angeles with his gloomy and tragic-comic story of a Hollywood family whose members, struggling with the relentless ghosts of their past, show how fame, success and appreciation, carry a high cost to pay.

The result of a job [effort?] that lasted two decades, the screenplay of Maps to the Stars dates back to the early nineties and is based on the personal experience of Wagner himself, who before becoming a writer worked as a limo driver (which inspired the character played by Robert Pattinson in the film) in Hollywood and has lived close to the turbulence of an environment made up of contradictions, of glory and wickedness, ambitions and illusions, and sudden success and sensational falls. Totally changing gender [genre?] and moving away from the issues that have made him famous, with Maps of the Stars Cronenberg produces an abnormal drama which at its center stands the Weiss family: a father’s guru, a teenage son and heartthrob [fresh out of] rehab, a mother intent on maintaining a high price for her actor son, and a daughter mysteriously scarred and obsessed with trying to find their [her?] place in the family circle. Mystery intervenes into the dynamics of the Weiss family, however, as a series of appearances of non-life, ghosts, mixing memories, fleeting hopes and unmet needs, reflect the contemporary focus on topics such as death, depravity and resurrection.

Filmed in Toronto and Los Angeles, Maps to the Stars relies on the director of photography Peter Suschitzky (Cronenberg’s faithful collaborator from the days of Dead Ringers ), the production designer Carol Spier, costumes by Denise Cronenberg and music by Howard Shore.

MAIN CHARACTERS

At the center of Maps of the Stars is the character of Havana Segrand, one of the most famous Hollywood actresses, but always in the shadow of her more legendary mother Clarice Taggart, an even more famous actress who died in a fire. Interpreting Havana and Clarice, her mother, are respectively Julianne Moore and Sarah Gadon, [who are] called to forge a relationship between mother/daughter that does not even know the boundaries of death. Showing no shame, Havana is a woman who lives completely secluded in a world of fiction, since it is as if she had a family and is very angry with her mother for the way in which, according to her, she had been abused. The emotional chaos which marks Havana takes an even darker turn when her mother’s role* in an upcoming film production could be assigned to another and not to her, making her see the ghost of Clarice at inopportune moments. [*in other story reports, we learn this is the role that made her actress mother, Clarice, famous ~BuckyW]

At first glance, the Weiss family seem to live a happy life, however, looking at them closely you can see that their fame, material wealth and honors, are just a litmus test for doubts, disappointments and dangerous secrets, which come to the fore with the entrance of Agatha, the daughter who’s been away from home for a long time due to psychiatric problems as a result of a tragic accident that has left her terribly marked with scars and burns on face and hands. Brought to the stage by Mia Wasikowska, Agatha comes home and, by fate, is working alongside Havana.

The last person who wanted to see Agatha in the family [again] is the father, Sanford, a guru that acts as a psychologist on TV, offering new age platitudes and dispensing advice to the masses. Played by John Cusack, Sanford counts a number of celebrity clients – one of these is Havana Segrand- and is strongly attached to the success of the teenage son Benjie, star of a television series. With the face of Evan Bird, Benjie is trying to make the point on [resurrect?] his career after ending up in rehab because of a drug problem, but is forced to confront the ghost of his adolescent spirit. Always defending Benjie to the hilt, is his manager-mother, Cristina, played by Olivia Williams.

Returning to Los Angeles, Agatha develops a solid friendship with Jerome, her limo driver. Played by Robert Pattinson, Jerome is an aspiring writer who keeps working as a driver and is the only character in the story who is not touched by madness or by a ghost.

The Playlist : Summer Movie Preview: 40 Most Anticipated Films

The temperatures are rising, the coats are going into storage, and the TV spots are getting more prevalent. That's right, it's almost time for summer movie season again. The months of May through August are traditionally the biggest in the multiplex calendar, though the lines have become increasingly blurred in recent years—if "Noah" and "Divergent" didn't kick off blockbuster season, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" certainly did, and that was three weeks ago.

Even so, things are different from the first weekend of May onwards, with at least one blockbuster hitting every week until mid August or so. So, with the release of season opener "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" approaching (which we've already seen, and it's fair to say we're not fans of), we thought we'd help you sort the wheat from the chaff by putting together the 40 films we're most looking forward to over the next few months.

It's an egalitarian mix of blockbusters and indies, united only by the fact that we're looking forward to them, or in some cases have already seen them.

1. "The Rover"

Cast: Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson, Scoot McNairy

Synopsis: In a war-torn future beset by financial collapse, a man trudges across the Australian desert to locate his stolen car and secure the mysterious cargo found inside.

Why It’s Worth Seeing: This is the first film for director David Michôd since his riveting debut “Animal Kingdom.” It’s been described as an existential western, and sees him reteam with Guy Pearce, with heartthrob Robert Pattinson and character actor favorite Scoot McNairy also on board. Michôd's debut captured the sweeping scope of early Michael Mann mixed with Werner Herzog’s anthropological analysis of human behavior, crafting a debut that was both terrifying and utterly unforgettable. While he’s taking things in a vaguely sci-fi direction here, Michôd has promised that this will be a relatively grounded affair, a crime picture in the outback that could be indicative of a contemporary mashup of “Wake In Fright” (with the idea of an outsider stranded in the outback) and “Mad Max” (with its emphasis on vehicular action). It's still under wraps beyond some impressive trailers, but more than anything else, we're hopeful that a Midnight Screening premiere at Cannes bodes for this being something truly impressive. We're tantalizingly close to finding out.

Release Date: June 13th.

This photograph is our first publicity shot from the film LIFE that i am currently shooting in Canada and USA. It is the story of James Dean and photographer Dennis Stock, set in early 1955. In the back of the car sits Jimmy as played by Dane DeHaan and in the passenger seat is Dennis, played by Robert Pattinson. Both guys are fantastic and are giving the film very good energy despite the very harsh winter we encountered in Canada.

A few years ago Australian director David Michôd made waves with his gritty drama Animal Kingdom, about a young man caught up in the middle of his criminal family. Not only did that film go on to critical acclaim, but it even made an appearance at the Oscars when Jacki Weaver was nominated for Best Supporting Actress (Meliaa Leo won for The Fighter). Now Michôd is back with another film, The Rover, and it looks like it may be one of the most gripping films of the year.

Starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, The Rover is a twist on your standard postapocalyptic story. It's not set in some zombie- or virus-stricken world, it just takes place a decade after society as we know it has collapsed. It then follows a nomadic man (Pearce) who is seeking revenge on a gang of thieves who stole his car, and to get that revenge he's willing to team up with one of their own (Pattinson).

As you can see from the below trailer, The Rover looks like a beautifully photographed, intense tale of one man who decides to say screw it all and chase down the men who took the one thing he had left. And if you're the type who instantly dismisses Pattinson because of his Twilight days, this is further evidence as to why he shouldn't simply be ignored.

The Rover will be playing at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. It opens in New York and L.A. on June 13, and then expands across America on June 20.

Cinema Blend

"Things fall apart," promises the newest trailer for David Michod’s The Rover, a gritty crime thriller in the same vein as the director’s gripping Animal Kingdom. And with this new tease comes the big(ger) news that The Rover has officially been selected for the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, scheduled for May.

The trailer was shared via A24’s official YouTube page.

Michod sets The Rover is a post-apocalyptic society, where the normal rules of civilization have faded. It calls to mind the mise-en-scene of his native Aussie "brother" George Miller, and every time I see a car speeding along a desolate highway in the above Rover clip, it makes me think we’re going to see "Mad" Max join the fray.

Instead, we get Guy Pearce, playing a loner who is associated with an abandoned drifter (Robert Pattinson) after the man is left to die by his brother. The two embark on a mission to… well, we’re not l00% sure yet, but here’s the synopsis A24 shared with us: THE ROVER, David Michod's highly anticipated follow-up to ANIMAL KINGDOM, is set in a world 10 years following the collapse of society. The rule of the law has disintegrated and life is cheap. The film follows hardened loner Eric (Pearce) as he travels the desolate towns and roads of the outback. When a gang of thieves steals his car they leave behind a wounded Rey (Pattinson) in their wake. Forcing Rey to help track the gang, Eric will go to any lengths to take back the one thing that still matters to him. Michod also wrote the film based on a story he conceived with Joel Edgerton."

The shot of Pearce failing to look up as a car crashes outside his window gives me shivers, for some reason. There’s something so disconnected about it.

The Film Stage

To go along with its announcement as part of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival line-up, A24 Films have now dropped the full-length trailer for David Michod‘s Animal Kingdom follow-up The Rover. Set in the near-future, the “existential western” teams Guy Pearce with Robert Pattinson as they trek through the Australian desert to hunt down a gang of criminals who have stolen their car.

Considering this one is part of the Midnight Screenings section at Cannes, we imagine things will be getting fairly dark and that sort of dread is on full display here. Check out the trailer, Australian poster, and U.S. character one-sheets below for the project also starring Scoot McNairy, Anthony Hayes, Gillian Jones, Susan Prior, Nash Edgerton, David Field and Jamie Fallon.

The Playlist

Fear The Man With Nothing Left To Lose. So goes the tagline of David Michod's "The Rover" starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, and with the film now headed to Cannes, A24 has dropped a new trailer and a couple of posters for the thriller. And yes, it looks pretty damn good.

Already showcasing his skill at capturing men pushed to the brink in "Animal Kingdom," Michod's latest takes it even further. Set ten years after the collapse of society, with the rule of law now tossed out the window, the story kicks off when Rey (Pattinson) is carjacked and left for dead, only to fall into an partnership with loner Eric (Pearce), who helps him track the down the gang of thieves. And the story, conceived by Michod and Joel Edgerton, looks like one packed with a grim sense of place and a palpable atmosphere of a post-apocalyptic world.

And oh yeah, the song in the trailer? That's Sol Seppy's "Enter One" which you can listen to in full below. "The Rover opens in New York and L.A. on June 13th and expands nationwide on June 20th.

Fear the man with nothing left to lose. Wow - this is indeed a must watch. After being announced as part of the Official Selection at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival earlier this morning, A24 Films has launched the full theatrical trailer for David Michôd's The Rover, a post-apocalyptic western thriller starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson. We featured the first riveting teaser in late January, but this time they show even more of the story without giving away anything, and damn, it looks incredible. From the emotion in Pearce's eyes, to the bleakness of the world, this is one of my most anticipated to see this summer.

10 years following the collapse of society, a loner tracks the gang who stole his car from a desolate town in the Australian outback with the forced assistance of a wounded guy left behind in the wake of the theft. Australian filmmaker David Michôd (Animal Kingdom) writes and directs The Rover, with a story credited to Joel Edgerton & Michôd. The film is described as an existential western following people from all corners of the world who have come out to the desert to scrape out an existence. Director David Michôd's breakout hit is one of the finest films of the past decade and anything he now does, we will be inevitably excited about. It also helps that a rather fantastic new trailer has just dropped for his follow-up film.

The Rover is a gritty post-apocalyptic thriller that stars Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson and it's just been announced as part of the Cannes line-up this year. The new trailer gives us a look at what we can expect and, like Animal Kingdom, we're not expecting a happy ending...

Screen Rush

Today, we’re back with the full trailer and news that, yes, it still looks great. So good, in fact, that it’s an official selection of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

Just announced, ‘The Rover’ will premiere at Cannes this year, which sadly most of us won’t be able to make. The good news is that we have the brand new trailer for you right here, along with two new posters for the film. Here’s a quick refresher course if this is the first you’re hearing of all this:

Also, it’s another impressive right turn from Pattinson, who continues to show he can do solid work that doesn’t involve playing an angsty vampire.

After its debut next month at Cannes, ‘The Rover’ opens in New York and Los Angeles on June 13 and nationwide on June 20.

The Film Stage

A few days before the first wave of Cannes competition titles are announced, here’s our initial look at one surefire example and, no less, one of our most-anticipated 2014 titles: Maps to the Stars, in which David Cronenberg makes a Cosmopolis reunion with Robert Pattinson and Sarah Gadon — in addition to teaming with directorial newcomers Mia Wasikowska, Julianne Moore, John Cusack, and Olivia Williams — for an examination of Hollywood culture, the treatment of child stars having long been noted as a key component of Bruce Wagner‘s screenplay.

This first preview — almost more in line with a sales piece than some official glimpse — offers a closer look at some of the plot machinations, what’s on display possibly working (early as this guess is) in some harmony with A History of Violence. All else looks and feels like a late Cronenberg picture — the return of cinematographer Peter Suschitzky ought to play some part in as much — and for yours truly, who considers the aforementioned 2012 picture among his greatest, a continuation (or “evolution,” as is probably more fitting) is one of many signs which point to one of 2014′s most essential pictures. David Cronenberg is back, and this time he's taking on his most terrifying, mind-altering subject yet: Hollywood families. Yep, the filmmaker who has spent a career shaking us up with various types of body horror, is continuing his exploration into the psyche, following up the Freudian "A Dangerous Method" and the chatty "Cosmopolis" with "Maps To The Stars."

The first international trailer for the film has dropped today, providing a peek at what Cronenberg and new bromantic partner Robert Pattinson are cooking up next. Co-starring John Cusack, Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Olivia Williams and Sarah Gadon, the Bruce Wagner-penned movie is vicious look at a twisted Hollywood dynasty, telling the story of the Weiss family, of whom each member seems to have their own variety of fucked up problems. And that's just the start.

One of our 100 Most Anticipated Films Of 2014 and a film likely to appear at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, the R-rated film (for violence, sex, nudity and drugs) will be distributed by eOne in the U.S.

Collider

The first Maps to the Stars trailer has been released. The film follows an archetypical Hollywood dynasty including a writer of self-help manuals, his wife who manages the career of their 13-year-old son, and their daughter, who was recently released from a sanatorium where she was treated for criminal pyromania. The plot also includes Havana, an actress who wants to remake a movie that starred her now-deceased mother. I’m not quite sure what to make of the footage in this promo trailer, and that’s part of what makes me so excited for this movie. The other part is that this is a new David Cronenberg movie, and I’m eager to see anything he does.

The film stars John Cusack, Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Robert Pattinson, Olivia Williams, and Sarah Gadon.

Robert Pattinson has re-teamed with his "Cosmopolis" director David Cronenberg, and you can get your first look at the result now.

Mia Wasikowska appears to be playing a variation on her character from Park Chan-wook's "Stoker" in the international trailer for "Maps to the Stars," a Hollywood-set thriller in which Julianne Moore plays an actress named Havana Segrand whose new personal assistant (Wasikowska's Agatha Weiss) just so happens to be a pyromaniac recently released from a psychiatric hospital.

Did I mention that John Cusack plays Agatha's dad and that Carrie Fisher plays herself? And that Pattinson's character is an aspiring actor named Jerome Fontana? Yes, this is promising.

We Got This Covered

Following up on A Dangerous Method, a Freudian analysis of human sexuality, and Cosmopolis, a dark satire of the Occupy movement, noted provocateur David Cronenberg is set to continue reaching the darkest corners of our collective psyches with his next film, Maps to the Stars.

The director’s involvement alone was enough to put this project (about the twisted members of a modern Hollywood dynasty) on my radar, but now that the first trailer has dropped, I can say for certain that people are going to be talking about Maps to the Stars all throughout the year.

The footage surely begs a lot of questions, but for a first preview, it does hint at a lot of really interesting plot points (by all appearances, it’s more of a sales trailer for festivals than anything else). There’s limo sex, truly twisted family dynamics, hidden pasts, a pyromaniac and the looming threat of some serious bloodletting.

Maps to the Stars re-teams Cronenberg with his Cosmopolis stars, Robert Pattinson and Sarah Gadon, but the film features a vast array of highly talented actors who haven’t worked with the legendary director before. Maps to the Stars‘s cast also includes John Cusack, Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska and Olivia Williams.

Cronenberg’s projects are always worth a look regardless of their subject matter, but the cast attached to this film, as well as the promise of a stinging deconstruction of Hollywood culture by screenwriter Bruce Wagner, have me eagerly anticipating it.

Maps to the Stars will probably see a theatrical release later this year, courtesy of eOne International.

It’s a good day when you get to see footage from one of your most anticipated films of the year, and this Maps to the Stars trailer is our first look at real footage from David Cronenberg‘s new movie. The film stars Mia Wasikoska as a young woman who bears a visible external scar, and probably some pretty serious internal damage as well. She turns up in Hollywood and scores a job as personal assistant to an actress played by Julianne Moore, but we soon learn that the girl has more on her mind than just doing her job well. Check out the trailer below for hints of much stranger stuff to follow.

Update: A second trailer has been released. It is even less safe for work than the first, but it is also actually a proper trailer rather than a sales reel. Both are embedded below.

Just a note about this first trailer. It’s more like a sales trailer than a theatrical ad, so it goes into a lot of detail. Those wary of seeing too much might want to stop after the first minute, and certainly after a minute and a half, when the editing starts to get more intense. There’s also a bit of language that makes this unsafe for work (for some).

A near certainty for Cannes 2014, "Maps to the Stars," David Cronenberg's follow up to his divisive "Cosmopolis" once again teams the director with Robert Pattinson, this time alongside a dreamy ensemble including Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, John Cusack, Olivia Williams and Carrie Fisher (as herself!).

Said to be a "vicious look at a twisted Hollywood dynasty" and a takedown of the industry altogether, "Maps" sure looks juicy. It's already been rated by the MPAA with an "R," which is clearly no surprise given Cronenberg's history.

Exciting news for David Cronenberg fans: The Canadian auteur is back with a new film called Maps to the Stars. The film was written by novelist and screenwriter Bruce Wagner, who’s not exactly a fan of Hollywood. According to Wikipedia, it’s a satire/drama, but looking at this first trailer it seems a lot darker than that. Cronenberg’s last two films (A Dangerous Method and Cosmopolis) have been incredibly dialogue-heavy, but this looks like it could be a return to old school Cronenberg. I mean it’s not going to be body-horror, but it could be a thriller.

Looking at this trailer it reminded me a little bit of David Lynch’s Mulholland Dr., which is a fascinating film about film and the industry. I love movies set in Hollywood, there’s a built-in tone and feel that is slightly uncomfortable, but also addicting. There’s almost a nightmarish quality to it. Hollywood is supposed to be where dreams are created, but these types of movies sort of revert that and turn it on its head building a “contradicting” atmosphere that somehow just seems wrong (for lack of a better term).

According to Screen Rant, it’s about “the plight of two former child-stars, while commenting on the entertainment industry’s relationship with western civilization as a whole”. It’s a low-budget film ($15 million), but it stars some pretty great actors like: Mia Wasikowska, Julianne Moore, John Cusack, Olivia Williams, Sarah Gadon and Robert Pattinson. More than anything I really like the mood of this first trailer. The film will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May and hopefully be available for everyone else very soon as well.

I’m a big fan of that cast. Mia Wasikowska is slowly, but surely becoming one of my favorite actresses. Julianne Moore is great, obviously and it’s also good to see John Cusack in something that looks good for a change. Robert Pattinson, I mean if you still have any doubts about him as an actor: Watch Cosmopolis. He is amazing in that one. Even though Cronenberg’s last two films weren’t exactly home runs, before that he directed Eastern Promises, which remains one of my favorites of his. Anyone else looking forward to this?

Mia Wasikowska is having a very cool 2014, with outstanding roles in "The Double" and "Only Lovers Left Alive." The cherry on top might be David Cronenberg's latest film, "Maps to the Stars," where she plays a mysterious woman named Agatha Weiss.

The very NSFW trailer for "Maps to the Stars," which is still in post-production, gives us a glimpse of the uglier side of Los Angeles. A glamorous actress named Havana Segrand (Julianne Moore) is fuming after being passed over for a major role and shares some rather colorful details about how the starlet got ahead in Hollywood. Jerome (Robert Pattinson) is a sexy young limo driver who assures Havana she's still hot in the most obvious way you could imagine. The appearance of Agatha (Wasikowska) in Havana's life alarms Havana's hands-on therapist Dr. Stafford Weiss (John Cusack), who seems especially concerned when he learns the young woman has burn scars. And then there's the super-rich former child star who seems rather ... troubled. There are more details about the plot floating around online, but that's no fun!

This is Cronenberg's second collaboration with Robert Pattinson, whom he cast in 2012's "Cosmopolis" as a ridiculous wealthy jerk who's riding through Manhattan in a limo. If we're keeping count -- and obviously we are -- "Maps to the Stars" marks Pattinson's second foray into onscreen vehicular copulation; unlike "Cosmopolis," he will probably not be getting a prostate exam in this aforementioned car. Cronenberg also directed the far superior "Crash," which was based on J.G. Ballard's book about people who perv out on car crashes. We're sensing a theme.

Seriously, "Maps to the Stars" looks fantastic. It doesn't have a US release date at the moment, but chances are good that it will premiere at Cannes to plenty of cheers and jeers. Because that's just how the Cannes audience rolls.

Cronenberg has been a frequent visitor to the Croisette since Crash made the competition in 1996. Maps To The Stars – written by Bruce Wagner, screenwriter and author of the eccentric Oliver Stone-producer mini-series Wild Palms – promises to be the kind of fractured genre riff that has characterised the director's recent work (notably A History Of Violence), dealing with a dysfunctional Hollywood family. Evan Bird, playing a troubled former child star, heads up an impressive cast that includes Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska and Robert Pattinson.

David Michôd, who made a big splash with his debut, Animal Kingdom, has been tucked away in the Midnight Screening strand, which suggests that his latest film, ostensibly another crime drama, might not quite be what it seems. Though you wouldn't know it from the trailer, The Rover is actually sci-fi variant set in a post-apocalyptic world, this time starring Guy Pearce as the title character, who teams up with Robert Pattinson to track down the gang that stole from him.

Dane DeHaan Talks about "Life" with Independent

Dane DeHaan has revealed that he made no attempt to become friends with Robert Pattinson before they started filming Life.

The Amazing Spider-Man actor stars alongside the Twilight heartthrob in Anton Corbijn's drama, focusing on the friendship between Life photographer Dennis Stock (Pattinson) and Hollywood icon James Dean (De Haan).

"It's an interesting relationship that they have. They do become close in the film, and they do become friends, but they're not friends from the start," he said.

"So what we did is we didn't try to make any sort of friendship beforehand. We got there and that's when our friendship started. So as it was happening on screen, it was also happening in real life."

The 28-year-old said they bonded on set, adding: " He's a really nice guy. He's totally chill and he's fun to hang out with, and he's fun to be on set with. We had a great time."

Sir Ben Kingsley and Joel Edgerton also star in Life, which wrapped shooting on April 1.

"We just finished a week and a half ago," Dane said.

Life, which is now in post-production, is expected to be released later this year.

Bill Pullman and Tony Hale have been tapped to round out the cast of American Ultra, the action comedy that Lionsgate shelled out $7M for in March. Production begins today in New Orleans on the pic, which stars Jesse Eisenberg as Mike, a stoner slacker whose secret past as a highly-trained sleeper agent upturns his small-town life with girlfriend Phoebe (Kristen Stewart) as he’s thrust into a covert government operation. Project X‘s Nima Nourizadeh is directing from a script by Max Landis (Chronicle) with Topher Grace, John Leguizamo, and Walton Goggins also co-starring. The PalmStar, Likely Story, and Circle of Confusion co-production is produced by Anthony Bregman, Kevin Frakes, Raj Brinder Singh, David Alpert, and Britton Rizzio. Ray Angelic is exec producing with Lionsgate’s Jason Constantine and Eda Kowan overseeing. FilmNation is repping international sales. Pullman is at ICM. Hale is repped by UTA.

Production is set to begin today in New Orleans on the Lionsgate action comedy film American Ultra. Directed by Nima Nourizadeh (Project X) and written by Max Landis (Chronicle), the film stars Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Topher Grace, Tony Hale, John Leguizamo, Bill Pullman and Walton Goggins.

American Ultra is a fast-paced action comedy about Mike (Eisenberg), a seemingly hapless and unmotivated stoner whose small-town life with his live-in girlfriend, Phoebe (Stewart), is suddenly turned upside down. Unbeknownst to him, Mike is actually a highly trained, lethal sleeper agent. In the blink of an eye, as his secret past comes back to haunt him, Mike is thrust into the middle of a deadly government operation and is forced to summon his inner action-hero in order to survive.

A PalmStar/Likely Story/Circle of Confusion production, the film is produced by Anthony Bregman, Kevin Frakes, Raj Brinder Singh, David Alpert and Britton Rizzio, with Ray Angelic as executive producer. Jason Constantine, President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions and Eda Kowan, SVP of Acquisitions, will oversee the project on behalf of Lionsgate.
