GFEST is upon us. Now in its fifth year, London’s LGBT arts festival will be showcasing the best in visual arts, film and performance. Expect highbrow debate, queer controversy and a good old fashioned love-in. The Gaily Mail caught up with one of this year’s artists, Paul Chisholm, to discuss price tags, exhibiting in New York and the issue of Jesus’ HIV status.

GFEST – in a nutshell, what’s it all about and how important is LGBT arts in today’s society?
GFEST is London’s only lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Arts Festival. LGBT arts are very important in society. There is still a long way to go in gaining equality both abroad and here in the UK. Art is one of the best tools for changing opinions.

GFEST is very selective in the artist it showcases. How does it feel to be involved?
Fantastic! It’s great to be able to help Gaywise FESTival (produced and organised by arts charity Wise Thoughts and the brainchild of the festival Artistic Director, Niranjan Kamatkar) to raise awareness of LGBT issues and break down people’s prejudices through art .

How would you describe your art to the Gaily Mail reader?
My work is a conundrum, it is at once pleasing to the eye, but also disturbing at the same time. Many juxtaposed colours, objects and texts proliferate out of the everyday and extraordinary materials I utilise. Touching on issues of health, life, sex, death, war, relationships, human emotions and the world as a contemporary fleeting moment, I seek for the audience to ask what is important in our lives and how we all have the power for change, even when obstacles seem insurmountable.

That’s quite a mouthful. Your work is very provocative – do you look for the shock factor?
No! My work just touches on subjects that are personal to me, all these ideas are already out there, I just visualize and re-interpret ideas to question society and our own opinions. Of course some people may find my work shocking, but that’s not what it is out to do. I set out to make people question their own beliefs and opinions.

Your art piece “Provocation” states “Jesus Had HIV”. Tell me about it.
“Provocation” is a work made in response to the words of Pastor Xola Skosana in South Africa. He made this statement to de-stigmatise those who are affected by HIV and AIDS. This work aims to bring these issues to light within the art consuming community. The work is intended to get people talking about the stigma attached to being HIV positive.

You recently exhibited in New York. How was your work received across the pond?
Very well indeed. The Americans love us British. The show was for VISUAL AIDS (a contemporary arts organisation committed to HIV prevention and AIDS awareness through visual arts projects), called Mixed Messages. It brings together both emerging talent (such as myself ) and big names including Yoko Ono and Felix Gonzalez Torres, exploring thirty years of the AIDS crisis. The show also looks like it will be travelling America next year, so if you missed it the first time round…

Which artist are you most looking forward to seeing at GFEST?
The Trope Troupe for their work “Departures” which explores the criminality of being gay across the globe. Interesting stuff.

It’s vulgar to talk about money, but what’s the price tag for your work?
It’s not vulgar to talk about money – it’s integral to society as we know it! Anywhere between £20 – £1000. However, I’m not represented by a gallery so there is still not a ‘market’ price for my work. Here’s hoping I can give up my day job one day!

Who is your biggest inspiration?
Felix Gonzalez Torres (artist) and my husband.

If the Gaily Mail were a work of art, what would it be?
It would have to be a photograph of a rainbow called “The calm after the storm”.

How do you put more than 30 years of pandemic struggle, horror and death into words? In “Mixed Messages,” over 40 artists try their hands at expressing the HIV/AIDS crisis through whatever means possible — from words scrawled on bathroom walls and ceiling ducts, to statements proclaimed in paintings, prints and sculptures, to messages stamped on door handles and floor mats. All of these methods, and more, are employed to communicate messages meant to end the silence (and death) that still persists.

The brilliance of those concise messages resides in their endless possibilities: “You do what you do/And they do what they do” (James Joyce), “So what if I did” (Lou Laurita), “Lifestyles/Ultra Sensitive” (Sam McKinniss), “Touch Me” (Yoko Ono). Each can mean one thing to the artist, another to the viewer.

The works are accompanied by neither a face nor a story, and yet are painfully intimate. Curator John Chaich focuses on a message he heard years ago from a colleague at an AIDS service organization: “AIDS is a crisis of connections.” Recalling the lasting impact of that quote, Chaich says, “The acts through which HIV is transmitted — intercourse, sharing needles and even giving birth — may be the very ways through which we find connection.” A piece by artist Paul Chisholm (“Fuck Me I Have…Love & H*I*V”) echoes this agonizing reality.

“Mixed Messages” is the most recent project by Visual AIDS — a contemporary arts organization dedicated to HIV prevention and AIDS awareness. They seek to fight AIDS by provoking a dialogue, and that’s what these artists have done. Their words are not just a cause for reflection, but a call to action.

Beginning in early May, works or messages of any kind sent in the body of an email or as an attachment to anything@driftstation.org were printed and hung, up through the end of the opening reception. 652 emails, totaling over 2,500 pages were printed and installed.

mailto: argues for a curatorial practice akin to chaos theory or aleatoric musical composition – that the initiation of a specific but open structure creates unexpected and diverse results. As the digital files (up until this point infinitely malleable and scalable) reach the printer, they are made manifest as fixed, physical objects; when hung on the gallery wall they each represent a small document in a curatorial process divorced from the geographically-focused perfection of the unique art object.

Paul Chisholm work for the Alella project takes the iconic image “ I LOVE NY “ created by Milton Glaser and he re-appropriates the image to give a gift to the small Catalan village of Alella.

The Logo has been copied millions of times not just for NY but also for Cities and Towns across the World. This time however the work has been subverted for the Alella community. Not only using the Catalan flag but also the image of the “ little wing “ The Icon for Alella.

This work explores issues of identity both collectivley as a village and the singularity of each individuals identity within the community of Alella. Who will wear these t- shirts ? Normally it would be a tourist who has visited the place and Loved it ! However this work asks the people of Alella to try on a T-shirt which identifies them to the home they live ; Alella.

" Provocation is a work made in response to the words of Pastor Xola Skosana In South Africa. He made this statement to de-stigmatise those who are affected by HIV and AIDS, This work aims to bring these issues to light within the Art consuming community. Jesus did indeed suffer for our existence and he also loves each and every one of us despite our status.

The Artists views on religion are; that it has a strong influence upon many cultures and communities and it can bring forth strong feelings and debates despite ones belief. The artist himself is non-religious and believes that there may or may not have been some fictitious man called Jesus, However the power to Provocate using Religious symbology, text or references has the power to make humanity consider the way it treats each other. Which is one of the over riding intentions of this young Artist.

Andreas Serrano created " Piss christ " a photograph of Jesus on the cross in Urine, and in 1998" Serrano told the alternative culture magazine Les Inrockuptibles that it was not anti-Christian. "The idea was more to humanise the figure of Christ. My goal in the end is to make beautiful objects from unorthodox materials," he said at the time. "But I was a bit naïve. I didn't expect such reactions. I was surprised by the hatred that it caused." ( Reference Art Info ) and the same goes for Paul Chisholm's work his intentions are not to offend but to humanise the stigma involved by being HIV positive. However this statement and Art work will offend in a world where peoples religious views and opinions cause more hatred and suffering than any other agenda.

Religion is a subject which is as prevalent in contemporary Art as it was in the past, but with one great step removed artists no longer rely on the church for their Bread and butter, artists are free to make statements which can incite change in both society and the Religious communities. HIV is not a virus that should be stigmatised it should be a virus which is understood to affect or infect us all.

Male Art Comes Into Its Own

Fifty years ago this book, 100 Artists of the Male Figure, may have been considered an outrage or an affront. Few artists were working figuratively and fewer still were concentrating on men. Thirty years ago, this book might have been dismissed as a “gay” thing or a “guy” thing, as something relating to “coming out” or grandstanding. Thankfully those days are over.
Today, the most remarkable aspect of the book is not that it is only about men, but that it has tremendous range, expertise and emotion, even with the narrow focus. But maybe the focus is not so narrow. Men, after all, number about half of the 7 billion people on the planet, why shouldn't they have an art book (or many art books) celebrating themselves?
Furthermore, speaking as a heterosexual woman of a certain age, I frankly have to admit that I enjoy looking at men! As the founder and publisher of the nude art calendar contest, Barebrush.com, I have often heard the complaint from women as well as men, “There are not enough men in the calendar! Where are the men?”

Thus it was with great anticipation and delight that I leafed through the pages of this book, reading the artists' statements and enjoying the art. To my surprise I found some old friends. I discovered also many new artists to respect and admire. Lovers of figurative art will find the range, depth, skill and sentiments of these 100 artists very satisfying. Some of the artists are straight, some gay, and some are not saying. A handful of the artists are women.

The difficulty of writing about this book is inherent in the very range of the works. There are elaborate scenes from mythology – most of them expressing at least a hint of a modern twist which makes them unmistakably art of our times. There are studies of form and color in oil, watercolor, drawings and sculpture. There are cubist, outsider, ash can, abstract and surreal figures.
The curator, E. Gibbons, prefaces the work admirably, explaining how the range of the content, representing various approaches, styles and emotions is designed to increase the reader's interest and satisfaction. The introduction by Grady Harp sets the male figure in its historical context, from the Kuros figures of ancient Greece, through Roman, medieval, Renaissance and modern depictions. Then each artist has a say: a two-page spread with a head shot, self-portrait or signature image, accompanied by text and, of course, the artist's images. Artists' contact information is also included in the book.

Several of these artists are known personally to me: John Woodrow Kelley, for his slim, American figures, sublimely at home in Greek mythology; Tai Lin, whose solid oil portraits and simple compositions display both strength and sensitivity; Michael Newberry, whose inventive genius translates common myths into fresh, surprising and delightful new images. All three of these artists have work in the Barebrush Nudes of the Month calendars. The fourth artist, Jordan Mejias, who monitors the open studio sessions at Spring Studio in New York City, is a master of watercolor, creating solid form with a splash of pure, confident abandon. His figures have the vitality of the natural flow of water, tamed by a sure hand and a masterful eye.

There are also several artists new to me whose work caught my eye. Some of the images are clothed, including the very remarkable and disturbing Jesus is Nailed to the Cross by New York artist Doug Blanchard.
For humor, composition and pizazz, I loveThigh of Relief by Campbell Paxton of Ohio.
For pure physicality of form, my copy of the book obeys my silent command and falls open automatically atAnonymous by Chris Lopez of Florida.
And finally, the artist whose work most seems to capture my feeling of what is needed to be an artist today: Sunday Morning Sam by Steve Cronkite (Connecticut) shows the artist's primary focus on reality, but with the strength, confidence, and a certain brutalized bravado to express the truth. If I could paint like that, I'd be a happy lady.

That I mention these artists does not mean that those whose work goes unmentioned are less worthy. After almost five years of running the Barebrush website with guest curators for the online calendar contest, I often point out that selection into any particular calendar is usually more about the curator than the artist.

I am sure that the reader will find his or her own personal favorites and delights. The curator, E. Gibbons, is planning more books devoted to the art of the male figure. As the first of a possible series, it is a worthy beginning.

What?

The Artists' Lottery Syndicate is a forty-strong collective of UK based artists who are joining forces to play The National Lottery over the course of a year, with the hope of hitting the jackpot. The Syndicate will run from 1 July 2010 - 1 July 2011.

Why?

As a reaction to the recession and its knock-on effect on arts funding, the Artists' Lottery Syndicate is a speculative new scheme for acquiring funds for artists. By utilising the element of 'luck', which plays such a central role in an artist's career, the Syndicate aims to explore the prevalent 'winner-takes-all' market of the arts, described by Hans Abbing in his book Why Are Artists Poor?

As well as these cynical undertones, playing on the 'lucky break' aspirations of many artists, the Syndicate also has a collective spirit. Inspired by the definition of a 'syndicate' as a group of people 'joining forces', working together for a common goal, it aims to be a social coming-together of a group of aspirational artists supporting each other into the new 'age of austerity'.

Just imagine if we won! Forty artists in press shots; smiling, holding a giant cheque and spraying champagne in the air! Would that not be the greatest artwork ever made?

On friday night we had our opening of stairway to... at the untitled bcn gallery in Barcelona Spain. The show was a great night with lots people consuming massive amounts of Cava and sixty Mc Donalds burgers !

McDonalds bags dance inside a white picket fence, our childlike inner emotion wants to tell us these things are alive, a fantasy land of childhood dreams, but our rational self tells us there is something inside making these inanimate objects move. At once playful and banal these bags are full of life, full of the joys of play. Unyet there is also something rather sinister about them. A sense of repulsion pervades in the viewers eye. Is it the fear of the unknown?

McDonalds is the vehicle for exploring our relationships between the familiar and the other. Of the world we know and the world as it may become. Of life’s animate characters, its silent seconds and of life’s whimsical; bitter sweet beauty.

The artists of Metafora's International Workshop 2011 invite you to their second exhibition at Untitled BCN.

The International Workshop is Metafora's main activity and brings together artists at various stages in their careers from all over the globe.

Stairway to... is a refreshing exhibition of totally new work from this diverse group as they push their creativity in new directions and draw inspiration from their experiences as resident foreigners in the capital of the Catalan region.

The show takes this experience of a year long immersion in the capital's culture as its umbrella theme and showcases work which connects with the quotidian life of the city as well as collectively asking 'now that we are here, where are we going to?'

Somehow new life and aesthetic harmony has been given to objects through a process of artistic appropriation and transformation. Stairway to... is a very warm exhibition which nonetheless has dark corners; wood features heavily as a material whether that be in Michelle Frederick's perfectly finished 'staircase' piece, in Meulemans and Fox's wooden sculptures, Jessica Axelrad's 'totem' by or in the romantic and haunting installation work of Kirsty Fenton. Themes of 'Dreams', 'Identity' and 'Home' run strongly through the show for example in the work of Lottie Heffer who gives us a beautiful installation about direction and indecision using the simple symbol of a door or Guerang Choi who explores the ephemeral nature of youth through self-portraiture. Savannah Pope also presents us with painting, bringing fin de siecle decadence right up to date in bold gold and glitter. Life in a consumer society is also reflected in works by Paul Chisholm and Jeni Cumming and Alexia Medici who take 'waste' objects and imbue them with aesthetic and conceptual value.
