			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A couple of weeks ago I wrote with some satisfaction about my successful conversion from Blogger to Wordpress. The new important features in Wordpress 2.6.2 are truly impressive, and the Blogger entries and comments came in without a hitch, even down to the permalink names.</p>
<p>I should have known it was too good to be true. I noticed this week that none of my recent entries were showing up in my RSS feed. Checking out the WordPress settings, I discovered that my site didn&#8217;t even have an RSS feed. Feed queries were returning a 403 error code, which means a security access violation. Trolling the WordPress message boards turned up that problems like this can only be addressed by the hosting provider, and GoDaddy doesn&#8217;t troubleshoot applications.</p>
<p>I tried exporting my blog using WordPress&#8217;s wonderful XML export utility. That went fine. The trouble was that the file exceeded the 2MB import limit. I had to scrounge up a way to change that (not a big deal, actually, involving a minor change to php.ini) and test a new install of WordPress and uploading my XML file. That went fine. Ultimately, I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling WordPress and reloading my blog. Then I had to rebuild by sidebar, change the header image and reburn my feed.</p>
<p>Long story short, this consumed a good four to six hours of time between troubleshooting and restoring. Feedburner now says I have a working RSS feed. We&#8217;ll see. I&#8217;m hoping this item shows up in it, along with the dozen or so other extries that subscribers haven&#8217;t seen over the last two weeks.</p>
<p>One of these days I&#8217;m going to hire me an IT person!</p>

<p>Between checking Marketwatch.com and commiserating with colleagues, it&#8217;s safe to say there wasn&#8217;t a lot of work getting done this week. Nervous investors flocked to the Web for some sign that the turmoil in the financial markets would soon die down.</p>
<p>With so much attention riveted on the future of the economy, this seems an ideal time for corporations to use their blogs to provide guidance and reassurance, or at least perspective, on the Wall Street meltdown. However, a quick tour of 15 prominent sites demonstrated that they were doing anything but that. Here&#8217;s a sampling:</p>
<p><strong>Kodak</strong>&#8217;s <a href="http://1000words.kodak.com/">Thousand Words</a> blog posted photos of Northern  California scenery and humpback whales off the coast of New  England.</p>
<p><strong>Accenture </strong>has a perfectly aligned blog about <a href="http://www.accenture.com/Global/Accenture_Blogs/Consultants_Blog/">Accelerating High-Performance Business</a>.  It hasn&#8217;t been updated since early July.  There&#8217;s also an Accenture blog devoted to advice from experienced consultants.  That one hasn&#8217;t been updated in two months.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.benettontalk.com/please-look-and-listen/#respond">BenettonTalk</a></strong> took on the topic with its characteristic directness and left-wing advocacy.  It pointed to several articles from people who want to revamp the US financial, transportation and participative government systems.</p>
<p><strong>Boeing</strong> is tied up with a strike, so it can perhaps be excused for not addressing bigger economic issues.  <a href="http://boeingblogs.com/randy/">Randy&#8217;s Journal</a> hasn&#8217;t.</p>
<p><strong>Wal-Mart</strong>, which is one of the most important companies in America, posted <a href="http://checkoutblog.com/default.aspx">two entries</a> since the crisis began.  One was about its campaign to reduce plastic bag waste and the other clarified its strategy on digital rights management. I suppose that&#8217;s more important that the economy in some parallel universe.</p>
<p>Factory activity hit its lowest level in seven years last month. With that as a backdrop, <strong>Chrysler</strong> chose to devote space to <a href="http://blog.chryslerllc.com/blog.do?p=home">test-driving the Dodge Challenger</a> and a new model of its gas-guzzling RAM 1500 truck. It also posted a video of Chairman Bob Nardelli talking about electrical prototypes.  We can assume everything is just great at Chrysler.</p>
<p>As the Dow fell 777 points on Monday, <strong>Delta Airlines</strong> posted an item about its <a href="http://blog.delta.com/2008/09/29/delta-sponsors-world-business-forum-in-new-york-city/">sponsorship of the World Business Forum</a> in New York City.  Describing an event that covered &#8220;leadership, innovation, the intersection of politics and business, and the challenge of change,&#8221; the blog doesn&#8217;t say one word about a mounting financial crisis that touches on all those areas.</p>
<p>Give <strong>General Motors</strong> credit for trying to be topical.  Its September 29 entry presented Chairman Rick Wagoner <a href="http://fastlane.gmblogs.com/archives/2008/09/the_case_for_gm_-_rick_wagoner_part_2.html">making a case for government loans to automakers</a> to meet more stringent fuel economy standards.  At least that&#8217;s newsworthy.</p>
<p><strong>Johnson &amp; Johnson</strong> <a href="http://jnjbtw.com/">talked about a visit to BlogWorld</a> and a dinner honoring two esteemed scientists.</p>
<p><strong>Bill Marriott</strong>, who is one of the few CEOs who blogs, commented proudly on <a href="http://www.blogs.marriott.com/">Marriott&#8217;s selection to a list of best places to launch a career</a> and more soberly on a hotel bombing in Pakistan.  Not a word about the outlook for the travel sector.</p>
<p><strong>PriceWaterhouseCoopers</strong> has an article by David Phillips about <a href="http://pwc.blogs.com/corporatereporting/2008/09/do-people-under.html">the shortcomings of regulatory reports</a>.  Of all the corporate blogs I checked, this was the only one that addressed the market turmoil directly.</p>
<p><strong>Sony</strong> wrote about <a href="http://news.sel.sony.com/electronicsblog/?p=173#more-173">a charity it supports</a> and the long-term viability of the Blu-Ray disc format.</p>
<p><strong>Southwest Airlines</strong> talked about <a href="http://www.blogsouthwest.com/blogsw">a new approach to speeding up lines</a> at airport security and also a pilot&#8217;s experience during a particularly rough landing in Austin.  In 13 entries since September 17, there is only one passing reference to &#8220;the current mess on Wall Street.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Toyota</strong> was happy to report that <a href="http://blog.toyota.com/2008/10/on-coming-back.html">48% of Lexus owners are repeat customers</a>.  It also boasted about two new crossover vehicles as well as its ongoing work on hybrids.  I guess the US economic crisis is a domestic matter.</p>
<p><strong>Wells Fargo</strong> says its <a href="http://blog.wellsfargo.com/GuidedByHistory/">Guided by History</a> blog &#8220;allows our archivists and historians to provide a rich online experience that bridges events in the past and with an outlook on the future.&#8221; You&#8217;d think this would be a great time to look at past economic meltdowns for context the current turmoil. You would be wrong. Instead, the entry posted the day after the Dow&#8217;s record drop is a travel video.</p>
<p>My point isn&#8217;t to ridicule these companies as much as it is to demonstrate how far we still have to go in achieving the culture of openness that new media enables.  Here was an opportunity for some of America&#8217;s most respected corporations to offer guidance and thought leadership to frightened consumers.  Instead, most have chosen to serve up the same old happy-talk mush they&#8217;ve delivered for years.  That&#8217;s their right, but that isn&#8217;t leadership.</p>
<p>These are historic times that offer businesses the chance to break through the noise and do something daring and different. So far, corporate America has fumbled the opportunity. Perhaps, as the economic picture becomes clearer, some will start talking with their customers instead of marketing at them. That would be a welcome development. I&#8217;ll keep an eye out for you.</p>

I quickly checked a sampling of prominent corporate blogs. <a href="http://blog.chryslerllc.com/blog.do?p=home">Chrysler</a>, <a href="http://blog.chryslerllc.com/blog.do?p=home">Marriott</a>, <a href="http://csr.blogs.mcdonalds.com/">McDonald’s</a>, <a href="http://blog.wholefoodsmarket.com/">Whole Foods</a>, <a href="http://www.accenture.com/Global/Accenture_Blogs/default.htm">Accenture</a>, <a href="http://boeingblogs.com/randy/">Boeing</a>, <a href="http://checkoutblog.com/default.aspx">Wal-Mart</a> and <a href="http://www.blogsouthwest.com/blogsw">Southwest Airlines</a> have yet to say a word about the economic crisis. They&#8217;re all still focused on cheery good news. What are they thinking? Cheers to <a href="http://fastlane.gmblogs.com/">General Motors</a> and <a href="http://pwc.blogs.com/corporatereporting/2008/09/building-public.html">PriceWaterhouseCoopers</a> for at least attempting to lend some of their perspective to the conversation. Whether you agree with them or not, they&#8217;re talking.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Let&#8217;s hope the other guys are too busy listening at the moment to make time to state their own views. We certainly could use their perspective on how THEY plan to react to market turmoil. Why are their so strangely silent?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I’ve recently counseled some clients who have been struggling with blogger negativity.   Their experiences offer lessons in how to deal with this common problem.</p>
<p>Anyone who embarks upon a social media campaign risks opening him- or herself to attack. Even the most noble causes can run afoul of extremists. In the vast majority of cases, these problems can be contained with sufficient planning. The trick is not to get caught flat-footed by criticism you didn’t expect. In fact, when managed professionally, negativity can actually enhance your image by demonstrating that you’ve thought through the issues in detail.</p>
<p>Negativity can usually be anticipated and blunted if you deploy a few basic tactics:</p>
<p><strong> Anticipate. </strong>Before launching a blog or public forum, know what you’re getting into. If you have critics, they will use the opportunity to air their gripes. Even if you don’t think you have critics, you should be prepared for them to emerge from unexpected places.</p>
<p>One client chose to blog about his adventures exploring new geographies. He was proud of his efforts and so was completely blindsided when environmentalists began attacking him. Had he thought through his topic more thoroughly, he might have anticipated such criticism.</p>
<p>Most businesses are poorly prepared to anticipate criticism because they only see the good in what they do. Here’s where an outside perspective may help. Come up with all reasonable arguments against your story and prepare a defense for each. It may be worth hiring a domain expert or journalist to help poke holes in your case.</p>
<p><strong> Keep calm.</strong> The knee-jerk reaction to criticism is usually “How dare they!”, but reacting defensively rarely works. Critics are inclined to be blunt when they think they’re shouting into an empty well, but they’re more civil when confronting a real person. Use their anger to reinforce your rationality. Count to 100 before responding, maybe take a walk around the block and then consider if there is any validity to the critic’s comments. Conceding that someone has a point &#8212; even if you don’t plan to do anything about it &#8212; is the fastest way to disarm him. Simply saying that you heard his comments will go miles toward soothing his anger.</p>
<p>If you really want to confound a critic, look up his phone number online (this usually isn’t difficult). Even if you end up leaving a voicemail, the mere act of personalizing an anonymous interaction often heads off a confrontation.</p>
<p><strong> Don’t censor.</strong> One client got so flustered by unanticipated negativity that he began deleting critical comments. NEVER DO THIS. Censorship won’t silence your critics; it will only send them to other forums you don’t control. It’s okay to edit obscene or inappropriate remarks, but don’t delete them just because you don’t like what they say. Once you have created a public forum, you must live with the consequences.</p>
<p>A little criticism actually isn’t a bad thing. It makes you look more credible. Respond to adversaries using the tactics outlined above, but don’t use your power to silence them. It will backfire on you.</p>
<p><strong> Address issues, not people.</strong> Your most vociferous critics may stoop to character assassination to dramatize their case. Don’t go there. Address issues, but leave the name-calling to the amateurs.</p>
<p>You also don’t have to speak directly to your critics. If people are harping on one issue, post information that addresses several critics. DuPont did this a few years ago when rumors popped up that Teflon caused cancer. DuPont didn’t address its critics directly but instead set up a website to tell the truth about Teflon. By refuting the rumors with scientific evidence, the company quickly put the issue to bed. Bloggers helped out by linking to DuPont’s informational website. The company never got down in the muck with its detractors, but effectively dispatched the rumors with facts.</p>
<p>If you employ these four tactics, you’ll be able to cope with nearly every challenge to your credibility, even the unanticipated ones.</p>

<p>This week Paul and David discuss some of the strategies that serial entrepreneur Jason Calacanis mentions in <a href="https://my.binhost.com/lists/private/jason/2008-August/000014.html" target="_blank">his subscriber-only mailing list</a> (note: our recording is mistaken about where to find it) about PR strategies that have resonated with him. As he says in his post:</p>
<p>&#8220;You don&#8217;t need a PR firm, you don&#8217;t need an in-house PR person and you don&#8217;t need to spend ANY money to get amazing PR. You don&#8217;t need to be connected, and you don&#8217;t need to be a &#8216;name brand.&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>He talks about how you can be the brand, and be totally involved in what your company is doing. And always pick up the dinner check. They also talk about others who have succeeded in garnering positive press for little dough. <h3>Social secrets of David Nour</h3>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: Courier New;"><a href="http://mediablather.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/nour_1.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-124" title="David Nour" src="http://mediablather.wordpress.com/files/2008/09/nour_1.jpg" alt="" width="196" height="294" /></a></span></p>
<p>This week Paul and David talk to David Nour from Atlanta. He is a champion of using social networks for business purposes, both in terms of using the tools to extend his own networks and also to enhance the connections within corporate types.</p>
<p>David met David at the annual National Speakers Association conference last month and learned a lot of great tips in how to get the most out of LinkedIn and Facebook. He spends about an hour daily updating his profiles and connecting with his networks, and in the process has been able to consult to some of the world&#8217;s largest corporations. He says you need to understand what you are trying to accomplish at the outset, and also that these are early versions of the services and have limited functionality (LinkedIn&#8217;s Groups is a prime example of that). To be a great social networker, you need both producers and consumers to be active on each network.</p>
<p>He is also a prolific speaker, executive coach and the author of a new book called <a href="http://relationshipeconomics.net/NourBook.html" target="_blank">Relationship Economics: the art and science of social networks</a> that will be out in stores in a few weeks.</p>

Not <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/chuckhester">Chuck Hester</a>. A veteran of technology public relations going back to the days of print, Hester has become a disciple of the business networking service <a href="http://www.linkedin.com">LinkedIn</a>. He uses LinkedIn to organize meetings and group dinners during his frequent travels and to maintain a list of hundreds of business contacts. When he wants to meet someone, he often starts with LinkedIn Answers or a query to his network. The strategy has drawn media attention and made Hester a master connector in tech media. And that&#8217;s paying off for his employer, e-mail service firm <a href="http://www.icontact.com">iContact</a>. Chuck Hester shares some secrets of effective LinkedIn use in this interview.</p>

They include top editors, marketers, regulators and technologists. While there&#8217;s no single conclusion to this long and varied discussion, the group agrees that marketers&#8217; focus is shifting away from content and toward audience. Publishers who attract the right audience - in whatever medium - will win.</p>
<p>Technology enables those audiences to be smaller and more focused than in the past. There is nearly unlimited opportunity to define and attract these new groups online. As a result, the group agrees that it&#8217;s a great time to be a publishing entrepremeur. They point to sites like <a id="oagq" title="Dopplr" href="http://www.dopplr.com/">Dopplr</a> and <a id="h7hl" title="yappr" href="http://www.yappr.com/welcome/MainLangChooser.action?redirmain=true">yappr</a> as examples of new Web 2.0 ventures that creatively combine member contributions in ways that amplify the value of the group. This community publishing model has explosive potential, they believe.</p>
<div style="text-align: left;">An example of this is <a id="wz72" title="Mint" href="http://www.mint.com/">Mint</a> , a site that tracks personal spending and compares it to that of other members. A couple of the panelists think this is a great example of a new form of publishing in which the value is derived from the collective. &#8220;I now have the tools to figure out whether you really are giving me a better deal, because if you try to give me a worse deal, the Mint analysis tools are going to show I&#8217;m actually paying a higher percentage rate,&#8221; says Esther Dyson. &#8220;So it&#8217;s going to force vendors to offer better deals.&#8221;This kind of innovation almost necessarily comes from entrepreneurs and small businesses, not from large companies, panelists agree. &#8220;<span class="articleText"><span class="diigoHighlight a id_df2d2be90b5f1e94cac9984d34e7aed8 type_0">It is almost impossible to change human behavior. And when someone drives to the top of the big company&#8230;it&#8217;s very hard for them to incorporate new ideas,&#8221; says Brian Napack, president of Macmillan. </span></span></div>
<p>Much of the discussion centers on the future of newspapers. While there&#8217;s no consensus on where the business is going. everyone agrees that the economics of mass distribution are becoming irrelevant. &#8220;<span class="articleText">A newspaper is going to kind of bifurcate into, on the one hand, a magazine with pictures, perhaps, and then something online where the news is actually up to date, and where you get news that&#8217;s tailored for you,&#8221; Dyson says. &#8220;</span><span class="articleText">I want to know what&#8217;s happening in my own neighborhood. I want to know which of my friends broke up and that belongs online, because the economics of mass distribution doesn&#8217;t make sense.&#8221;</span></p>
